Reasons For Quitting: A Comparison Of Part-Time And Full-Time Employees, James R. Salter, Lawrence H. Peters, Ellen F. Jackofsky Jan 1982

Reasons For Quitting: A Comparison Of Part-Time And Full-Time Employees, James R. Salter, Lawrence H. Peters, Ellen F. Jackofsky

Historical Working Papers

Based on the construct of "partial inclusion", it was hypothesized that the turnover of full-time employees would be best explained by job-related reasons and that of part-time employees by non job-related reasons. To test these hypotheses, data were collected from 1558 part-time and 640 full-time persons who voluntarily quit their jobs. With the exception of three items dealing with work schedules, the results tended to support the hypotheses. These results were discussed with regard to the management of turnover within full-time and part-time employee groups and the importance of continued research aimed at identifying company controllable factors whih influence the …

Job Turnover Versus Company Turnover: Reassessment Of The March And Simon Participation Model, Ellen F. Jackofsky, Lawrence H. Peters Jan 1982

Job Turnover Versus Company Turnover: Reassessment Of The March And Simon Participation Model, Ellen F. Jackofsky, Lawrence H. Peters

Historical Working Papers

This study is designed to test the proposition that both intraorganizational and inter-organizational mobility, as opposed to interorganizational mobility alone, may be a more appropriate criterion for testing conceptual propositions regarding the prediction of turnover. To this end, the March and Simon (1958) participation model was tested utilizing two different dependent measures, job turnover and organizational turnover, among a sample of 290 retail sales employees. Measures of job satisfaction and the expectation of finding alternatives were administered and eight months later turnover data were collected. Using moderated regression, it was found that with the criterion, job turnover, the ease x …

Optimal Sequential Selection Based On Relative Ranks With Renewable Call Options, John S. Rose Jan 1982

Optimal Sequential Selection Based On Relative Ranks With Renewable Call Options, John S. Rose

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Sequential sampling problems may be affected significantly by the presence of sampling costs and the ability to recall historical observations. In the context of the classical secretary problem, we incorporate these two notions into the decision maker's action set, thereby creating a stopped decision process. Whenever a desirable applicant appears, we may consider purchasing an option to recall it subsequently. The problem is solved for the best-choice criterion, reduced or discounted by the option costs incurred.

In-Store Marketing Will Sell More Brewers Beer Than Relying On Media Pull Strategy Alone, Ron Muchnick Jan 1982

In-Store Marketing Will Sell More Brewers Beer Than Relying On Media Pull Strategy Alone, Ron Muchnick

Theses

The subject discussed in this paper is the value of using in-store marketing techniques to sell more Brewers beer than would be sold by relying solely on additional advertising. This additional advertising would in effect create what is termed media pull in motivating the consumer to buy more Brewers beer. The effectiveness of additional media support was compared to a sales promotion with reseller merchandising and display effort. This comparison was made by conducting two field experiments.

The methodology used was conducting two price promotions on Brewers twelve-packs. Both sample display stores as well as non-displaying control stores were selected …

Theories Of Management: A Manual For Managers, Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger Jan 1982

Theories Of Management: A Manual For Managers, Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger

Theses

Terrie Hearns Schwerdtfeger’s thesis, Theories of Management: A Manual for Managers, serves as a practical guide aimed primarily at preparing individuals for roles in middle management, especially within healthcare institutions. The manual is structured around three central areas: managing oneself, managing subordinates, and managing the organization. Schwerdtfeger argues that successful management depends on mastering all three, as they are interrelated and in constant flux due to evolving business and societal demands. Drawing from both classical and contemporary theories, including those of Taylor, Herzberg, Vroom, and Maslow, the work addresses core concepts such as motivation, job enrichment, decision-making, organizational communication, …

Teaching Evaluation: A Survey Of Alumni Perceptions, N. Fayne Edwards, Robert Wesley Phillips

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Few issues in academia raise as many conflicting opinions among the various constituencies of a university as does the subject of student evaluations. Faculty members either welcome student evaluations, live with them, or condemn them. Administrators may view them as a panacea, discount them as meaningless, or view them as one of many inputs necessary to judge the "worthiness" of an individual faculty member. Students believe they have the right to evaluate the faculty but they question how much reliance is placed on their views by the faculty and administration.

An Idiographic Approach To Organizational Behavior Research: The Use Of Single Case Experimental Designs And Direct Measures, Fred Luthans, Tim R.V. Davis Jan 1982

An Idiographic Approach To Organizational Behavior Research: The Use Of Single Case Experimental Designs And Direct Measures, Fred Luthans, Tim R.V. Davis

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The underlying assumptions of the dominant nomothetic (group-centered, standardized, and controlled environmental contexts, and quantitative methodologies) and idiographic (individual-centered, naturalistic environmental contexts, and qualitative methodologies) research perspectives are examined. An interactive theoretic (i.e., real people interacting in real organizations) for organizational behavior is suggested-a theoretic assumption that lends itself to an idiographic approach. Intensive single- case experimental designs and direct observational measures are proposed as a potentially powerful methodology for idiographic research of organizational behavior.

Trust Differences Between Blacks And Whites In An Organizational Setting, Dow Scott Jan 1982

Trust Differences Between Blacks And Whites In An Organizational Setting, Dow Scott

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

As increased numbers of blacks enter jobs from which they were formerly excluded, concerns about whether they can perform the work and interact successfully with peers, subordinates, and superiors have been expressed. This study examines a large organization that has been racially mixed through top management for over ten years. The author identifies and examines trust differences between black and white exempt employees (supervisors, managers and professionals) toward superiors, peers, and top management.

A Human Resource Planning Approach For Reducing The Cost Of Absenteeism, Dow Scott Jan 1982

A Human Resource Planning Approach For Reducing The Cost Of Absenteeism, Dow Scott

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Although absenteeism rates can be reduced significantly in most organizations, it must be recognized that absenteeism is a legitimate employee benefit and will occur at some level despite control efforts. The author proposes that a human resource planning approach can substantially reduce the cost of absenteeism by staffing for predicted levels of absenteeism. There are three preconditions for such an approach: (1) absenteeism measures must be developed and attendance data collected: (2) the probability that jobs will be vacant must be calculated; and (3) a cost analysis for alternative strategies of filling job vacancies must be completed. Diagnostic instruments are …
