The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

JOHN W. MURPHY describes the discontents and contentions of postmodernism in assessing the world of today, be it science, religion, or other institutions in society, and suggests modernism's emphasis on order may exact a higher price than the imprecision of postmodernism. Currently Associate Professor of Sociology at Arkansas State University, Murphy has, in addition to numerous articles, published The Social Philosophy of Martin Buber, The Underside of High-tech, and Technology and Human Productivity.

Americans should celebrate their Constitution's two-hundredth anniversary by considering changes in the fundamental law, not simply by congratulating themselves on its longevity …

Preference Tests Of Ramp Designs For Young Pigs, P. A. Phillips, B. K. Thompson, D. Fraser

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

Preference experiments were used to identify features of ramp design that influence the voluntary use of ramps by young pigs. In seven experiments, groups of pigs, aged 7-8 wk, were given free access to four different ramps simultaneously. The animals' behavior was monitored to identify the amount of time spent on the ramps and the number of pigs that failed to use specific designs. Slope, in the range of 20-32° from the horizontal, had a major influence on the pigs' behavior, with the shallower slopes attracting more use than steep ones. Pigs preferred ramps with angle-iron cleats (cross-laid on the …

Attitudes And The Risk-Return Paradox: Prospect Theory Explanations, Avi Fiegenbaum, Howard Thomas Mar 1988

Attitudes And The Risk-Return Paradox: Prospect Theory Explanations, Avi Fiegenbaum, Howard Thomas

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study attempted to explain Bowman's risk-return paradox in terms of recent research in behavioral decision theory and prospect theory. The research emphasized the role of reference, or target, return levels in analyzing risky choices. For returns below target, a large majority of individuals appear to be risk seeking; for returns above target, a large majority appear to be risk averse. Using extensive COMPUSTAT-based data on U.S. firms, we consistently found a negative risk-return association for firms having returns below target levels and a positive association for firms with returns above target. These results support the basic propositions of prospect …

The Structure Of Opportunity: Network Configuration And Career Mobility, Terri A. Scandura Phd Jan 1988

The Structure Of Opportunity: Network Configuration And Career Mobility, Terri A. Scandura Phd

Management Faculty Articles and Papers

Within organizations, managers are constantly choosing with whom they will begin, continue or cease to interact (Fischer, 1977; Kaplan, 1984). Organizations have been defined as "fish nets" of interrelated offices, and can be viewed as social groupings with relatively stable patterns of interaction over time (Katz and Kahn, 1978; Weick, 1969). If such a model of organizing is to move beyond this metaphor, coherent frameworks, and accompanying methods of analysis capable of capturing these emergent processes are necessary. The social network perspective was proposed by Tichy, Tushman and Fombrun (1979) and has guided data collection and analysis on emergent network …

The Determinants Of Blood Donation Behavior In A Changing Environment, Kathleen A. Krentler, Mary L. Joyce Jan 1988

The Determinants Of Blood Donation Behavior In A Changing Environment, Kathleen A. Krentler, Mary L. Joyce

Institute for Nonprofit Organization Management

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

Past research into donation-related behaviors has focused primarily on monetary giving. This study looks into blood donation behavior and attempts to analyze its determinants in the current environment, with AIDS awareness and its links to the nation's blood supply at an all-time high.

Previous research on the determinants of blood donation behavior has indicated that noneconomic factors weighed heavily in a person's decision to donate blood. Altruism has frequently been cited as the primary motive for giving. Additional research has found fear to be a major inhibitor.

As public awareness of AIDS and its association with blood and …

Scottish Enlightenment And The Development Of Accounting, Michael J. Mepham Jan 1988

Scottish Enlightenment And The Development Of Accounting, Michael J. Mepham

Accounting Historians Journal

This article outlines the lives and background of the main writers who were active in the 18th century period of 'scottish Ascendancy' in accounting texts. The impressive publications produced by this group are detailed and the question of why this phenomenon should have occurred in Scotland is considered. It is suggested that the Scottish Ascendancy in accounting texts can be considered as part of the achievements of the Scottish Enlightenment and as complementary to the more renowned works in economics, law and philosophy, which are generally recognized as an important component of that movement.

Assessing Intended Employee Behavior In Exit Interviews: Attitudinal And Status Effects, Robert A. Giacalone, Ron A. Dibattista, David Duhon Jan 1988

Assessing Intended Employee Behavior In Exit Interviews: Attitudinal And Status Effects, Robert A. Giacalone, Ron A. Dibattista, David Duhon

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

In order to assess the effects that attitudes toward particular aspects of work life and status (management vs . non-management) might have on the intended willingness to discuss issues during exit interviews, managerial and non-managerial workers were asked to evaluate their attitudes toward particular aspects of work life, as well as their willingness to discuss these issues during an exit interview. Results showed that status alone did not affect willingness to discuss issues, but that attitudes and status had an interactive effect on willingness.

A Performance Model For Staff Auditors In An Internal Audit Environment, Joseph M. Larkin, James A. Schweikart

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

Understanding individual traits associated with successful performance in internal auditing is needed to enhance efficiency in personnel policies affecting staffing, career development and retention of auditors. This study attempted to ascertain salient characteristics of individuals which may be associated with successful performance, by examining traits of successful and less successful auditors of a large manufacturing firm. The results show that individual levels of job satisfaction and motivation are most closely associated with performance. The results also show that other variables may have the potential to be associated with performance.

Trends In The Evolution Of Scholarly Accounting Thought: A Quantitative Examination, Miklos A. Vasarhelyi, Da Hsein Bao, Joel Berk

Accounting Historians Journal

Contemporary Accounting Research (CAR) has expanded substantially in scope over the past two decades. This paper provides an overview of these trends using both quantitative techniques from statistics and exploratory data analysis (EDA). Articles in CAR are classified into taxonomies and the literature tracked over 22 years. Analysis focuses on four taxonomies: foundation discipline, school of thought, research method and mode of reasoning. The paper first examines journals vis-a-vis article publication frequency and dominant taxonomies. Secondly, three assertions concerning the relative posture of the Journal of Accounting Research and the literature are examined. Next the context of the literature is …
