Decision Support Systems Process Tracing Using Hypermedia, Robert P. Minch Jan 1991

Decision Support Systems Process Tracing Using Hypermedia, Robert P. Minch

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Two main alternative approaches to analyzing decision processes--implicit input/output inference models and explicit tracing of observable decision process manifestations-are reviewed with emphasis on explicit tracing methods. An emerging technology, hypermedia, is then examined as to how it may facilitate the process tracing method of decision making analysis. Examples are presented of mappings between hypermedia computer/user interface functions (such as mouse movements and mouse clicks) and underlying decision process functions. Issues of data quality, breadth of application, and implementation cost are discussed. Hypermedia process tracing is compared with other process tracing methods, including monitoring of eye movements, verbal protocols, and non …

Tracing The Evolution Of Research In The Accounting Review Through Its Leading Authors: The 1946-1965 Period, Robert James Fleming, Samuel P. Graci, Joel E. Thompson Jan 1991

Tracing The Evolution Of Research In The Accounting Review Through Its Leading Authors: The 1946-1965 Period, Robert James Fleming, Samuel P. Graci, Joel E. Thompson

Accounting Historians Journal

n order to better understand the development of accounting research, this paper examines the work of the leading authors of The Accounting Review (Leading Authors) during 1946-1965. An earlier study [Fleming, Graci and Thompson, 1990] concluded that the work of the Leading Authors during the 1926-1945 period was characterized by a practical orientation. The Accounting Review in many respects remained a practically oriented journal during 1946-1965. However, changes are evident that were contributing factors in the evolution of The Accounting Review into its current quantitative/empirical orientation.

Maintaining Accounting As The Paramount Interest In Accounting Research: Re-Examining The Contributions Of D.R. Scott, Mark A. Covaleski, Mark William Dirsmith

Accounting Historians Journal

Cushing's [1989] recent analysis of Kuhn's [1970] characterization of the state of crisis within a discipline's research agenda suggests that the accounting discipline is showing symptoms of such a crisis. In this paper, D.R. Scott's [1931] classical work The Cultural Significance of Accounts is developed in terms of it being one of the earlier and more significant efforts to recognize a pending crisis within the accounting research arena. Scott's work is defined as not only being a precursor to identifying the crisis in accounting research, but also as providing a meaningful basis for addressing the significant issues embedded within the …

Exploratory Study Of Early Empiricism In U.S. Accounting Literature, Dale A. Buckmaster, Kok-Foo Theang Jan 1991

Exploratory Study Of Early Empiricism In U.S. Accounting Literature, Dale A. Buckmaster, Kok-Foo Theang

Accounting Historians Journal

Little or nothing is said of empiricism in U.S. accounting literature during the first half of the twentieth century in accounting history literature. The objectives of this study are threefold: (1) to determine if an empirical accounting literature existed prior to 1950; (2) to determine if pre-1950 empiricism was extensive enough and substantive enough to have influenced the development of accounting thought; and (3) to compare pre-1950 empirical work with contemporary academic research. It is concluded that empirics were common prior to 1950 from examining a sample (approximately forty percent) of volumes (clusters) of The Accounting Review, The Journal of …

Leadership-Making Applies Equally Well To Sponsors, Competence Networks, And Teammates, George Graen, Mary Uhl-Bien Jan 1991

Leadership-Making Applies Equally Well To Sponsors, Competence Networks, And Teammates, George Graen, Mary Uhl-Bien

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Teams are rapidly becoming the management technique of choice in American industry (Fortune, 1990). Spurred on by the pervasive and often dramatic success of Japanese management in America at places like NUMMI in Freemont, California, Honda, in Marysville, Ohio, NISSAN in Smyrna, Tennessee, MAZAK, in Florence, Kentucky, DENSO in Battle Creek, Michigan, and J.V.C. in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, team organizations are being implemented in large (General Electric and General Motors) and small American companies. Our study of Japanese transplants in the U.S. (Graen & Wakabayashi, 1990) suggests that several hybrid versions of Japanese team organizations work most effectively with American employees. …

A Structural Model And Test Of The Antecedents And Outcomes Of Organizational And Professional Commitment, Mary Ann Evans Jan 1991

A Structural Model And Test Of The Antecedents And Outcomes Of Organizational And Professional Commitment, Mary Ann Evans

Dissertations and Theses

The major purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between commitment to one's profession and commitment to one's employer and the role this relationship plays in predicting satisfaction, performance and turnover. In order to accomplish this purpose the antecedents and outcomes of the commitments were modeled and tested using covariance structural modeling techniques. The data source was the 1990 Kaiser Permanente, Northwest Region Employee Survey. The study included a wide range of occupations. The literature is ambiguous about the definition and measurement of professional and organizational commitment. Professional commitment is characterized either as a unidimensional or multidimensional construct …

Strategic Competitiveness In The 1990s: Challenges And Opportunities For U.S. Executives, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, Jeffrey S. Harrison Jan 1991

Strategic Competitiveness In The 1990s: Challenges And Opportunities For U.S. Executives, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

U.S. firms face a major global competitiveness challenge. Although the problems relate, in part, to differences in the economic structure, history and cultural differences between the U.S. and foreign rivals, these factors may not explain as much of the variance in competitiveness as they did in the past. Competitiveness problems are also linked to a number of strategic factors under the control of managers. Among them are the absorption of managerial energy in mergers and acquisitions, increasing levels of debt, increasing firm size, greater firm diversification, lack of investment in human capital and inappropriate corporate culture.

In response to these …

Are Acquisitions A Poison Pill For Innovation?, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, R. Duane Ireland, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

The recent wave of acquisition activity may be damaging the innovative capabilities of American firms, thus making them less competitive in the global marketplace. In fact, acquisitions often serve as a substitute for innovation, which may cause further neglect of internal research and development (R&D) programs. Additionally, acquisitions often lead to increases in leverage, diversification, and absorb significant amounts of executive time, which may lead to reduced managerial commitment to innovation.

In this article, evidence is presented suggesting that acquisition activity may result in reductions in R&D inputs and outputs. On average, the 191 firms in the sample reduced their …

Similarities And Differences In The Adult Learner: A Comparison Of Student Perceptions Motivations And Needs By Age Cohort, Joan Elizabeth Patten Jan 1991

Similarities And Differences In The Adult Learner: A Comparison Of Student Perceptions Motivations And Needs By Age Cohort, Joan Elizabeth Patten

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

The majority of literature dealing with the adult learner concept revolves around teaching methodologies or learning capabilities. While there is some literature on motivation in adult learners, the general assumption is that all those over the age of 25 are similarly motivated and share common perceptions.

To determine whether student perceptions, motivations and needs could be distinguished by age categories, survey results of 936 students at Sinclair Community College were categorized within 4 age cohorts. Results indicate that: 1) both traditionally-aged students as well as non-traditional students share some common perceptions; and 2) cohorts within the non-traditional student population may …
