Accounting History And Empirical Research, Barbara Dubis Merino, Alan G. Mayper
Accounting History And Empirical Research, Barbara Dubis Merino, Alan G. Mayper
Accounting Historians Journal
This paper examines historical methodology and suggests ways accounting history may be made more relevant to contemporary accounting researchers. First there is a brief discussion of the "traditional" accounting history method, the documentary model, and an examination of history methodologies that offer alternatives modes of inquiry. This includes the pattern model and rhetorical analysis. This discussion is brief and focused on only issues examined in subsequent discussion of the empirical research. The discussion of the empirical research, including behavioral research, focuses on three issues: retrodiction, with examples concerning securities legislation; belief transference, with examples concerning the demand for auditing; and …

End User Computing: A Critique Of The Empirical Literature, C. Steven Hunt, Ilyoo Hong
Journal of International Information Management
This manuscript is an attempt to provide the reader with synopses of relevant research pertaining to the EUC literature. References included in [this paper for review address some of the most germane topics in IT management. With the recently increasing recognition that end users are a major player in the acquisition, use, and management of computer resources in business organizations, a host of researchers have examined diverse changes that have occurred in the computing environment in order to explore various issues associated with enduser computing (EUC). This paper suggests that past EUC research has extensively examined the effects of MIS …
Effects Of Dogmatism On Computer Literacy*, Floyd J. Brock, Chatles E. Paddock, Wayne E. Thomsen
Effects Of Dogmatism On Computer Literacy*, Floyd J. Brock, Chatles E. Paddock, Wayne E. Thomsen
Journal of International Information Management
Dogmatism and other individual characteristics affect the level of computer literacy (information fundamentals) reached in the introductory courses in Management Information Systems (MIS), perhaps as much as the investment education institution have made in software and hardware. This paper reports on the results of a questionnaire on computer literacy, dogmatism, and KolVs Learning Styles Inventory (KLSI) given to 80 students at the end of an introductory MIS course. Differences in the literacy and learning styles were analyzed from the perspective of dogmatism. The results indicated thai the scores in dogmatism inversely matched the scores in computer literacy. The effects of …

Promises, Pitfalls, And Paradox: Cognitive Elements In The Implementation Of New Technology, Terri L. Griffith, Gregory B. Northcraft
Promises, Pitfalls, And Paradox: Cognitive Elements In The Implementation Of New Technology, Terri L. Griffith, Gregory B. Northcraft
Management & Entrepreneurship
Offers a model of new technology implementation (NTI) that elaborates the role of cognitions, specifically user and implementer frames in NTI. The model reveals the paradox of value (PV) and the paradox of experience (PE). The PV occurs when the divergence between user frames (the balanced information that users need) and implementer frames (the unbalanced information that implementers provide) creates negative surprises for users when they experience a new technology. The PE is that these negative surprises need not be costly and may be key components of successful implementation. The key proposition is that the pitfall of unbalanced implementation frames …

Global Social Security: How The Rules Are Changing In Certain Countries, Robert J. Myers
Global Social Security: How The Rules Are Changing In Certain Countries, Robert J. Myers
Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)
Social security programs (i.e., national pension systems) differ widely between countries. This is only natural, and desirable, because of varying social and economic conditions and philosophies. This paper discusses some of the general worldwide trends, such as the equal treatment of men and women, increases in the normal retirement age, projection of future costs, and the different philosophies of social security. Some of the interesting and unique changes recently made in selected countries-Canada, Chile, Eastern European countries, Germany, Japan, People's Republic of China, Saudi Arabia, Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, United Kingdom, and United States-are described.

Recruiting Sources And Posthire Outcomes For Job Applicants And New Hires: A Test Of Two Hypotheses, Chuck R. Williams, Chalmer E. Labig, Thomas H. Stone
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
This study, unlike most recruitment source research, tested for and ruled out the contaminating effects of prescreening and self-selection bias by examining applicants and new hires for nursing positions (S. L. Rynes and A. E. Barber, 1990). Consistent with the predictions of A. Rees (1966) and J. C. Ullman (1966), recruitment sources reached differently qualified applicants in terms of nursing experience and education which, in turn, were valid predictors of subsequent nurse performance. In a similar manner, recruitment sources produced sharply different levels of prehire knowledge, which was inversely related to voluntary turnover after 1 yr. However, contrary to both …
Effective Communication In The Intranational Workplace: Models For Public Sector Managers And Theorists, John F. Kikoski
Effective Communication In The Intranational Workplace: Models For Public Sector Managers And Theorists, John F. Kikoski
Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications
This article discusses theoretical models for effective interpersonal communication in the intranational workplace for public sector managers in the U.S. Effective communication is complete when the message has been understood. A message has been understood when it has been both clearly sent and received. Effective communication is a requisite to every step in the organizational process--from the mutual recognition and understanding of a topic or problem that triggered the communication in the first place to its final resolution. The second classical model of interpersonal communication was published by David Berlo. Berlo elaborated upon the Shannon-Weaver model. He recognized that interpersonal …

The plan is presented in six basic steps: 1) understand the corporate mission and objectives, 2) analyze the situation and environment, 3) determine the goals and objectives, 4) develop the marketing strategies to achieve the desired goals, 5) design an action plan to …
Diffusion Of Total Quality Management: An Organizational Self-Production Perspective, Baizhong Zhao
Diffusion Of Total Quality Management: An Organizational Self-Production Perspective, Baizhong Zhao
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
American industries are in the process of a quality revolution. Most companies are busy implementing Total Quality Management (TQM) programs. However, the experience of both Japanese and American companies indicates that successful TQM implementation depends on an understanding of implementation processes, which itself relies on an understanding of organizational self-organizing, for it is through this process that TQM gets diffused and becomes a core component of an organization's culture. Self-organizing is a so-called process-oriented approach, based on theory from cybernetics (Ashby, 1962; Steier & Smith, 1985; von Foerster, 1960), dissipative structure theory (Prigogine & Stengers, 1984), and chaos theory (Gleick, …

Mentoring Relationships In The Real Estate Industry: A Descriptive Analysis, Angela Jacqueline Sweeney
Masters Theses
Mentoring is an old phenomenon which dates back to ancient Greece. It has recently gained the attention of researchers in organizational and business settings. The study examines mentoring relationships in the real estate industry. The purpose of this study was to identify whether mentoring takes place in a particular occupation, specifically real estate, and to further investigate the functions and qualities of the mentoring relationships. Sixty-three questionnaires were distributed to local real estate agents. Twenty-seven were returned yielding a response rate of 42%. Six follow-up interviews were conducted to compliment the quantitative data from the questionnaire. Results indicated that 80% …

Theses
This thesis will focus on the study of telemarketing management and the need for a telemarketing management guide. A reference manual will be developed to help a supervisor understand the skills needed to be an effective supervisor. This manual will also be a reference to help the supervisor evaluate their skills and give them the information needed to increase their skills as well as develop new skills.
Telemarketing Supervisor training usually consists of how to give evaluations and explaining company goals. Supervisors are not usually given an overview of the proactive humanistic skills needed; communication, interpersonal leadership, etc. The humanistic, …

The Influence Of Cohesive Groups On The Ethical Behavior Of Public Employees: An Analysis Of An Urban University, Patricia Bellin Strait
The Influence Of Cohesive Groups On The Ethical Behavior Of Public Employees: An Analysis Of An Urban University, Patricia Bellin Strait
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management
Ethics problems permeate all aspects of public agencies. This is especially true in urban areas where public workers have frequent interactions with large numbers of civilians. The results of unethical behavior often have very tangible effects with perhaps the most serious consequences being the deterioration of public services and the destruction of public trust.
This dissertation explores Milton Fisk's Group Ethics Theory which states that ethical behavior varies according to cohesive group membership. In order to investigate Fisk's theory, an ex post facto study was performed within a single urban university. The primary independent variable was group membership. Data was …
