The Midwest Quarterly; Vol. 34 No. 3, Arthur Scherr, Alfred Cismaru, George W. Shields, William M. Bueler, Wade Sikorski, Earl Lee, Jeanne Murray Walker, Midwest Quarterly Editors

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

In Candide, argues ARTHUR SCHERR, Voltaire's women are intelligent, resourceful, and erotic individuals, quite the equal of males, if not infrequently their superiors. Having taught history and English at Bernard Baruch College and Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York, as well as the New York City high schools, Scherr is a self-styled "Renaissance person" who has published articles in a number of scholarly journals.

Human memory is a curious thing: it remembers what it wants to remember and forgets what it is inconvenient to remember or simply refuses to believe a contrary fact. So it is …

Cross-Cultural Issues In The Management Of German-Owned Business Subsidiaries In Hampton Roads, Teja Ulrich Apr 1993

Cross-Cultural Issues In The Management Of German-Owned Business Subsidiaries In Hampton Roads, Teja Ulrich

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

'Culture' can be described as patterns of thinking, feeling and acting that distinguish one cultural group from another. Cultural diversity is therefore likely to introduce variety to organizations in which individuals from different national backgrounds are working together. Although this variety bears the potential for an improvement of the cognitive development in the organizations, managers of multicultural business organizations tend to perceive cultural diversity as a disadvantage. This thesis attempts to identify the impact of cultural differences between Germans and Americans on organizations in which German managers work with American employees. German managers of eight business subsidiaries in the Hampton …

Managerial Roles And Entrepreneurship In Non-Profit Urban Arts Agencies In Virginia, Beth Joan Novitch Rossheim Apr 1993

Managerial Roles And Entrepreneurship In Non-Profit Urban Arts Agencies In Virginia, Beth Joan Novitch Rossheim

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

The future of the arts in Virginia depends on knowing how arts agencies are functioning and surviving at a time of resource decline. What roles do managers play in administering agencies? What business and management skills do managers use to maintain an agency and to relate to the community? How do managers handle cutbacks? Does entrepreneurship create more viable arts agencies?

Bivariate data analysis separated managers into four role groups: entrepreneur, administrator, artist, and caretaker, according to their perceived degree of programmatic creativity and documented access to organizational resources. Managerial role types were compared with management behaviors to discern significant …

A Preliminary Study Of A Job Analytic Inventory Derived From A Behavioral Consistency Method For Assessing Intrinsic Motivation, William John Banis Apr 1993

A Preliminary Study Of A Job Analytic Inventory Derived From A Behavioral Consistency Method For Assessing Intrinsic Motivation, William John Banis

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

The research question for this study asked if the Job Specifications Inventory (JSI) had acceptable internal reliability and an ability to differentiate among occupational groups. The JSI was designed to have subject matter experts rate the importance of skill, content, context, relationship and work focus requirements of jobs or occupations. The JSI used a taxonomy of 268 behavioral elements derived from the content analyses of satisfying achievements reported by a large, diverse clientele. A clinical-type behavioral consistency method was used to extract performance dimensions from clients' achievements to build the taxonomy. The achievement-based taxonomy was seen as potentially enhancing productivity …

Job Attribute Preferences Of The Workforce In Polish High Technology Enterprises, Florian Michael Sisavic Mar 1993

Job Attribute Preferences Of The Workforce In Polish High Technology Enterprises, Florian Michael Sisavic

Dissertations and Theses

A key precept in work place motivation theory is that management knows what job attributes are valued by the employee. Management can benefit by asking employees what they want from their work experience (i.e., job attribute preferences), rather than assume they know. This is particularly important to Polish high technology companies that are in transition to a free-market economy and to Polish workers who must be appropriately motivated to compete globally.

This study attempts to better understand the job attribute preferences of Polish managers and workers, the potential gaps between Polish managers' perception of their workers' preferences (system), and how …

Order Matters, And Thus So Does Timing: Graphical Clocks And Process Synchronicity, F. Gregory Hayden Mar 1993

Order Matters, And Thus So Does Timing: Graphical Clocks And Process Synchronicity, F. Gregory Hayden

College of Business: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this paper is, first, to review definitions of time; second, to discuss particular dimensions of time; and third, to relate those dimensions to graphical clocks. The value of such clocks for network analysis will be discussed.' The clocks for the integration of system networks will be computerized matrices and concomitant digraphs (graphical clocks). Such networks can be used to provide a standardized system clock to determine timeliness. This places events into a common system, which is timed by sequenced events. The coordination of broadly recurring sets of meaningful events characterizes synchronicity. Thus, timeliness is defined by system …

Teaching Big Brother To Be A Team Player: Computer Monitoring And Quality, Terri L. Griffith Feb 1993

Teaching Big Brother To Be A Team Player: Computer Monitoring And Quality, Terri L. Griffith

Management & Entrepreneurship

Computer monitoring should not be seen as a way of gathering information about workers, per se, but rather as one part of a production and quality strategy that provides needed information to a diverse team of workers. In its most powerful and effective form. computer monitoring is the use of computers to collect. process, and provide feedback information about work with the intent of improving performance and developing employees. Unfortunately, computer monitoring has also been used to punish employees. Here, a study of a successful computer monitoring system at Hughes Aircraft Company is described. The study shows that computer monitoring …

Explaining The Effects Of Powerless Language Use On The Evaluative Listening Process: A Theory Of Implicit Prototypes, Larry Vinson, Craig E. Johnson, Michael Z. Hackman Jan 1993

Explaining The Effects Of Powerless Language Use On The Evaluative Listening Process: A Theory Of Implicit Prototypes, Larry Vinson, Craig E. Johnson, Michael Z. Hackman

Faculty Publications - College of Business

This study examined the effects of forewarning arid discounting messages on the evaluational consequences of powerless language use. The specific forewarning message contained information on types of powerless language (including hesitations) and their effects. The general forewarning message excluded mention of hesitations. The discounting message cautioned against making trait attributions based on powerless language behaviors. In Experiment #1, listeners exposed to the specific and general forewarning messages gave lower competence ratings to the lecturer and were less likely to recommend that he be hired as an instructor. The discounting message did not moderate negative evaluations of the lecturer. In Experiment …

Factors Determining The Behavior And Effectiveness Of Personal Decision Support Systems Users: An Examination Of Fishbein's Model, Jack Teh, L. A. Digman Jan 1993

Factors Determining The Behavior And Effectiveness Of Personal Decision Support Systems Users: An Examination Of Fishbein's Model, Jack Teh, L. A. Digman

Journal of International Information Management

Personal computing, and the microcomputer which support it, are referred to as Personal Decision Support Systems (PDSS) (Lehman, 1985). Empirical studies regarding personal computing have been of the general field study type, primarily examining trends and/or establishing the basic concept of personal computing. This research builds and empirically tests a research model that conceptualizes some "impact" variables which are internal to the user, as intervening in the relationship between the "situational" or external variables identified by previous MIS research and system success (utilization, decision performance, and satisfaction). This study employs a framework, based on Fishbein and Ajzen's intention-behavior model (1975), …

A Group Decision Support System For The Asian Pacific Rim, Milan Aiken, Chi Hwang, Joseph Paolillo, Daeryong Kim, Long-Chuan Lu Jan 1993

A Group Decision Support System For The Asian Pacific Rim, Milan Aiken, Chi Hwang, Joseph Paolillo, Daeryong Kim, Long-Chuan Lu

Journal of International Information Management

The vast majority of research on Group Decision Support Systems (GDSSs) has been conducted on American groups using English. However, other nationalities using other languages may also benefit from this new technology. The GDSS developed at the University of Mississippi supports over a dozen languages including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Russian, and Malay which are particularly relevant to organizations on the Asian Pacific rim. Three pilot studies of Japanese, Chinese, and Malaysian students using the GDSS demonstrate that these groups can benefit from the technology.

Strict Liability For Sellers Of Used Products: A Conceptual Rationale And Current Status, Karl Boedecker, Fred W. Morgan

Economics, Law, and International Business

Marketers of used products face uncertainty in the legal environment because of the inconsistent ways their offerings are treated with respect to strict product liability. The authors analyze the conceptual underpinnings of strict liability to assess its applicability to used goods. Then they examine litigated cases to present an overview of current judicial treatment of defective used products. Finally, they discuss policy issues related to used products in the context of both the law and marketing.

Revolution In Financial Reporting Theory : A Kuhnian Interpretation, Tom Mouck Jan 1993

Revolution In Financial Reporting Theory : A Kuhnian Interpretation, Tom Mouck

Accounting Historians Journal

A Kuhnian perspective is used to explain the transition in financial reporting theory from an economic income perspective to an informational perspective (a transition that Beaver refers to as a revolution), and to examine the subsequent development of the latter. The demise of the economic income perspective (represented by the normative a priorists) is attributed to the lack of a paradigm which could serve to identify research problems and provide methodological guidance. The success of the informational paradigm, on the other hand, is attributed to the fact that it was, in essence, a sub-paradigm of the broader and well-established market …
