The Social Work Docuverse, Roger A. Lohmann May 1996

The Social Work Docuverse, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The impact of electronic technology on social work has not been fundamental or transformative in any way comparable to the impact upon a variety of other professions and disciplines. A major potential impact of electronic systems for communications-based knowledge systems like social work lies in the area of textual processing systems which are only beginning to come to the fore. This article concentrates on one such set of technology -- hypermedia -- which already makes possible the construction and delivery of a social work docuverse which contains an electronic knowledge base of the field. Actual realization of such a web …

Data were gathered through in-depth interviews. The interviews were conducted over a one year period in the county of Hidalgo, Texas. This study identified two processes used by women in managing work and family. Age and the timing of life events were found to have the greatest influence on the process of managing work and family responsibilities among the studied women. Ethnicity, contrary to existing explanatory models, was not …

Teacher Training Programs In Economics: Past, Present, And Future, Michael K. Salemi, Phillip Saunders, William Walstad May 1996

Teacher Training Programs In Economics: Past, Present, And Future, Michael K. Salemi, Phillip Saunders, William Walstad

College of Business: Faculty Publications

There has been, of late, renewed interest in and criticism of the quality of undergraduate instruction (Lewis B. Mayhew et al., 1990). Colleges and universities have responded by placing more emphasis on teaching, and faculty are under increasing pressure to improve their teaching performance. Economics departments are particularly concerned about enrollment trends and recognize that effective teaching stimulates student interest and willingness to major in a subject (John J. Siegfried et al., 1991).

It is not surprising that there is room for improvement in college teaching. Graduate programs emphasize development of advanced knowledge and research skills. Few provide teacher education. …

The Relationships Among Leadership Behaviors Of Leaders In Training Organizations, Training Methods, And Organization Profitability, Joseph D. Keith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Business organizations are decreasing funding for training. The problem investigated in this study was to determine if there was a relationship among the leadership behavior of training leaders, the use of newer methods of training, and organizational profitability. A sample of 57 organizations from the Fortune 500 was surveyed to determine leadership behavior and the use of newer methods of training. The Leadership Practices Inventory was used to measure leadership and the Affective Communication Test was used to measure charisma. Profitability data were obtained from the literature. Return on assets, return on equity, the Moody's Corporate Bond Rating, and the …

Graduate Theses

Ninety-one individuals (52 males) and (39 females) read 13 scenarios depicting various sexual harassment incidents. Participants were asked to determine the seriousness of the harassment in each scenario, choose the type of grievance procedure they would prefer, and then rate how likely they would recommend each consequence in regards.to the harassment. Participants were also asked to complete a Sexual Harassment Attitude Questionnaire that measured "tolerance" towards sexual harassment. Age, Product Nutrition, And Label Format Effects On Consumer Perceptions And Product Evaluations, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews Apr 1996

Age, Product Nutrition, And Label Format Effects On Consumer Perceptions And Product Evaluations, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

Nutrition label format effects across different levels of product nutrition value and groups of younger (under 58 years; average 46 years) and older consumers (58 years or more; average 70 years) are examined using a 3 × 2 × 2 experimental design. Age interacts with nutrition level in affecting nutrition evaluation measures with older consumers displaying smaller differences in nutrition attitude and purchase likelihood for a low versus a high nutrition value product. Older consumers also perceive all labels as more difficult to understand. Consumer performance on judgment tasks vary across label formats and nutrition value manipulations. Implications for consumer …

Toward Understanding Team Leadership: The Empirical Development Of A Team Leadership Classification System, Brian J. Ruggeberg Apr 1996

Toward Understanding Team Leadership: The Empirical Development Of A Team Leadership Classification System, Brian J. Ruggeberg

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop a classification system of team leadership through the empirical process of numerical classification. Although the value and importance of leadership have been recognized in the team literature, few empirical studies have been conducted to understand the phenomenon of team leadership. A thorough review of the relevant literature was conducted to identify the various behaviors, functions, traits, and KSAOs associated with team leadership. This information was then used to select and construct data collection instruments for the classification process.

Two separate studies were conducted to achieve the overall goal of developing a team …

The Effect Of An Integrated Library Computer System On Job Characteristics In Public Libraries, Richard J. Harris Apr 1996

The Effect Of An Integrated Library Computer System On Job Characteristics In Public Libraries, Richard J. Harris

Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Management

This study investigated the effects of computerization with an integrated library system (ILS) on job characteristics in public libraries.

Two different but complementary research design components were used. One component consisted of a case study of the Norfolk (Virginia) Public Library, where an ILS was implemented between 1988 and 1995. The case study relied on data from interviews, archival sources, and questionnaires. The other component was a mail survey of public library workers across Virginia.

Case study interview data was analyzed by coding. Time series analysis was used to examine trends in budget and staffing. Pattern matching logic was used …

PHILIP K. JASON presents the sounds of the war in Vietnam through the literature that conflict engendered and in doing so makes this experience all the more real and devastating. Professor of English at the United States Naval Academy, Jason's publications include work in two collections of poetry; the Creative Writer's Handbook (Prentice-Hall); the career study of Anais Nin and Her Critics (Camden House); and two books relevant to the topic here, Fourteen Landing Zones: Approaches to Vietnam War Literature (University of Iowa Press) and The Vietnam War in Literature: An Annotated Bibliography of Criticism (Salem Press). Extreme Response Style, Irvine Clarke Iii Apr 1996

Extreme Response Style, Irvine Clarke Iii

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The objective of this research was to understand the effect of culture on Extreme Response Style (ERS) for cross-cultural marketing efforts employing Likert type scales. Growth in quantitative cross-cultural marketing research has brought alternative methodological considerations, like ERS, to the forefront of attention, since, traditional inferential statistics used in group comparisons become confounded by this systematic bias. Marketers comparing groups with differing degrees of response style may incorrectly make claims based on observed differences that are strictly attributable to cultural ERS. Therefore, the specific objective of this dissertation was to relate ERS to culture, Likert response formats and to demonstrate …

Causal Models Of Work-Family Conflict From Family And Organizational Perspectives, Lyse Guttau Wells Apr 1996

Causal Models Of Work-Family Conflict From Family And Organizational Perspectives, Lyse Guttau Wells

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

More women are entering the workforce and the number of dual career couples has increased and will probably continue to do so. As women's tasks and responsibilities outside of the home have increased, those within the home have not diminished resulting in higher work-family conflict (Greenglass, Pantony, & Burke, 1988). This research examined a woman's work-family conflict from both work and family perspectives. Two models were described and tested. One model included individual and family antecedents and consequences of work-family conflict. The antecedents included sex-role attitudes, role salience, and perfectionism in the wife. The consequences were quality of family life …

Cognitive Elements In The Implementation Of New Technology: Can Less Information Provide More Benefits?, Terri L. Griffith, Gregory B. Northcraft

Management & Entrepreneurship

This paper explores the major mechanisms within the Griffith and Northcraft (1993) cognitive model. This model offers a fine-grained view of how user and implementer understandings influence implementation success. While broader implementation models suggest structural and process strategies for increasing the likelihood of implementation success, this model describes user and implementer understanding and can be used to design appropriate implementation strategies.
