Outbound Mileage, Vijay Padaki, M R Venkatesh

IIMB Management Review

The Indian experience with Outbound Programmes has clearly been a mixed one. With the initial euphoria passing over, managements are beginning to wonder if management development is getting to be more and more like branded potato chips - puffed up and pricey but the same old stuff inside. Indeed there is every possibility of the Outbound Programme going the way of all other bandwagons: into the clearance sale shelves of the management supermarket. Padaki and Venkatesh attempt to demystify Outbound Programmes (OP) and provide guidelines to organisations contemplating OP, on how to prepare for a worthwhile OP experience, what to look for …

The Practitioner From Within: Revisiting The Virtues, Frances Grodzinsky Mar 1999

The Practitioner From Within: Revisiting The Virtues, Frances Grodzinsky

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

Traditionally the study of computer ethics involves taking students who are not philosophically trained, exposing them to action-guiding theories, presenting them with the codes of ethics of several companies and professional organizations and asking them to make ethical decisions in scenario-based cases. This approach is deliberately action-based and focuses on doing. "What would you do?" is the traditional question we ask our students. While this pedagogical methodology forces them to examine situations and argue from a particular point of view, it does little to influence their character. They see the utilitarian or deontologist as someone other than themselves. There seems …

Consumer Decision Making As A Basis For Destination Selection: An Empirical Study Of German Tourists In Ireland, Ann Conway Feb 1999

Consumer Decision Making As A Basis For Destination Selection: An Empirical Study Of German Tourists In Ireland, Ann Conway

Masters

The primary objective of this research was to explore the criteria that came into ply when a tourist judges one area over another. It examined the relative importance of tourist attributes in contributing to the attractiveness of a travel destination. This research is a study of over 1,000 German tourists to Ireland, having purchased and experienced the tourism product. Extensive review of consumer behaviour literature on theorists such as Schiffman and Kanuk (19940, Engel et al (1995), Lewis (1984 and 1987), Mowen (1995) and Loudon and Della Bitta (1993) laid a basis for research into tourism literature. This resulted in …

Self-Construal Orientation: Validation Of An Instrument And A Study Of The Relationship To Leadership Communication Style, Craig E. Johnson

Faculty Publications - College of Business

The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to test rigorously the measurement equivalence of the Independent and Interdependent Self-Construal Scales (Gudykunst et al., 1994) across three cultural groups and for males and females, and (b) to determine the comparative amount of varianc,e in self-perceived leadership communication style that can be predicted by self-construal orientation, culture, and biological sex. College students from the United States (n = 224), New Zealand (n = 218), and the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan (n = 228) responded to the self-construal scales and the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (Hemphill & Coons, 1957). Gender Differences In Mentoring In Australia: Mentor Functions And Outcomes, Terri A. Scandura Phd, Ethlyn A. Williams Jan 1999

Gender Differences In Mentoring In Australia: Mentor Functions And Outcomes, Terri A. Scandura Phd, Ethlyn A. Williams

Management Faculty Articles and Papers

The issue of gender differences in mentoring remains controversial since some studies find gender differences and many do not. Perhaps the context of the mentoring relationship provides an explanation of why gender affects mentoring in some studies. Since most studies of mentoring to date have employed U.S, samples, the question of whether gender differences may emerge in studies of menta ring in non-U.S. samples needs investigation. The present study will examine the role of gender, mentoring functions and the interactive effects of gender and mentoring in relation to career expectations, job satisfaction and organizational commitment in a sample of N=156 …

The impacts of EC for the information service industry are discussed and a hierarchy fuzzy multicriteria decision-making (Fuzzy MCDM) method for …

An Exploration Of Differences In Judgements Of Computer Ethical Behavior By Sex, Education, Age, And Other Demographic Factors, Margaret Anne Pierce, John W. Henry Jan 1999

An Exploration Of Differences In Judgements Of Computer Ethical Behavior By Sex, Education, Age, And Other Demographic Factors, Margaret Anne Pierce, John W. Henry

Journal of International Information Management

When faced with an ambiguous ethical situation related to information technology (IT), the individual's course of action is influenced by personal experiences, consideration of what co-workers would do in the same situation, and an expectation of what the company would sanction. In this article, the approval/disapproval ratings of over three-hundred Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) members concerning the actions taken in a series of IT ethical scenarios are evaluated. Respondents expressed their personal opinion, as well as their perception of their co-workers' opinion, and their understanding of the company s opinion of the actions relating to IT described in …

Using Distribution Costs In Decision Making At The Dennison Manufacturing Company, 1909 To 1949, Gloria Vollmers Jan 1999

Using Distribution Costs In Decision Making At The Dennison Manufacturing Company, 1909 To 1949, Gloria Vollmers

Accounting Historians Journal

Early in the 20th century, predating most academic and practitioner literature, Dennison Manufacturing's top management recognized that certain kinds of distribution costs, normally treated as part of general overhead and allocated based on prime costs, were highly relevant for product-costing and pricing decisions. They pulled as many identifiable direct costs of distribution as possible out of the general overhead pool and assigned them to the appropriate product lines as extra information for the managers of those lines. However, these off-book assignments of costs were not fully understood and caused misunderstandings for many years. New archival evidence allows us to see …

The Effects Of Computer Self-Efficacy And Outcome Expectancy On End-User Job Control And Stress, John W. Henry, Robert W. Stone Jan 1999

The Effects Of Computer Self-Efficacy And Outcome Expectancy On End-User Job Control And Stress, John W. Henry, Robert W. Stone

Journal of International Information Management

This article examines the effects of computer self-efficacy and outcome expectancy on the end-user's sense of felt stress as mediated by job control. A nationwide survey of information technology end-users provided the sample. The results show that computer self-efficacy directly impacts personal and job related outcome expectancies and that computer self-efficacy and job related outcome expectancies directly affect job control. Job control is shown to mediate the impacts of computer self-efficacy and job related expectancies on stress. The results are discussed and implications for information technology managers are presented.
