An Assessment Of Effective Fund-Raising Policies Used At Private, Church-Related Undergraduate Colleges, Albin H. Grohar Jan 1989

An Assessment Of Effective Fund-Raising Policies Used At Private, Church-Related Undergraduate Colleges, Albin H. Grohar

Dissertations

Problem. Much of what is known concerning fund-raising policies and practices at colleges in the United States is anecdotal. Few empirical studies have focused on any aspect of fund raising. No known empirical study has identified those fund-raising policies that might help church-related colleges to be more effective in generating gift income from private philanthropy. The purpose of this study was to bring to light those fund-raising policies that may be associated with effective fund-raising programs at church-related colleges.

Method. Typically, fund-raising productivity is associated with total funds raised. An alternative way of assessing fund-raising effectiveness is to compare what …

The Importance Of Management Philosophy To The Success Of Pay-For-Knowledge Systems: An Empirical Test, Timothy P. Schweizer Aug 1988

The Importance Of Management Philosophy To The Success Of Pay-For-Knowledge Systems: An Empirical Test, Timothy P. Schweizer

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, pay-for-knowledge compensation systems have received serious attention from practitioners and organizational researchers. Some have hypothesized that the specific mechanics of pay-for-knowledge systems are critical to success while others have suggested that contextual factors determine whether or not these systems will be successful. Empirical research has not been very supportive of these hypotheses, however.

Another hypothesis is that management philosophy is important to the success of pay-for-knowledge systems. The purpose of this study is to test this hypothesis by addressing three questions: 1) Are the components that make up management philosophy related to the successes experienced by companies …

A Study Of White-Collar Clerical Productivity : Composition, Issues And Implications For Human Resource Planning, Sheila Devereaux May 1987

A Study Of White-Collar Clerical Productivity : Composition, Issues And Implications For Human Resource Planning, Sheila Devereaux

Theses

During the past decade, there has been a growing concern and focus over declining American productivity. Declining productivity requires long-range thinking, and fundamental changes on the part of government, labor and management.

One of the major contributors identified is the labor force. What has gone unmeasured for years is the white-collar clerical workforce. The service sector has become the most dominant area where clerical workers have increased, consequently, productivity issues have become a top priority.

Management must assess the implications of losses in turnover, absenteeism, performance lag, and morale that affects bottom-line profits. Management is under pressure to develop action …

High Tech Transition And The Organization, Chetan H. Shah May 1987

High Tech Transition And The Organization, Chetan H. Shah

Theses

The future outlook of any corporation depends upon the resourcefulness of those who manage the planning and operating functions of the business. Time and accuracy are two critical criteria in effective managerial reports for decision making. The electronic computer is a welcome addition into the industry. While its applications to payroll, accounting, sales, and inventory have been extensive, computing has nevertheless been criticized. This study concentrates on determining the impact computing has had on the managers and especially on the people working in the organization from clerks to the top level management.

While an investigation of the existing literature was …

An Evaluation Of The Orientation And Training Programs Of A Fast Food Franchise, Cheryl M. Donahey Jan 1987

An Evaluation Of The Orientation And Training Programs Of A Fast Food Franchise, Cheryl M. Donahey

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Very few attempts have been made to adequately evaluate training programs. The research reported here is an attempt to evaluate the effects of the revised orientation and training programs of a fast food franchise. Subjects consisted of 676 hourly employees of a Central Florida fast food franchise who completed questionnaires soliciting measures of the following perceptions: managements' consideration and structure levels and the effectiveness of the revised orientation and training programs. Modest support was found for the prediction that the revised programs would increase the employees' perception of managements' consideration. No evidence was found to support the hypotheses that employees …

Selecting A Strategy For Determining Information Requirements, Mohammed H. Omar Jan 1987

Selecting A Strategy For Determining Information Requirements, Mohammed H. Omar

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

There is and continues to be an awareness in society that accurate and timely information is a vital resource of any organization, and that an effective management information system is a means of providing the needed information. In an answer to the question: why do organizations process information? Daft [6] presents two answers. Organizations process information to reduce uncertainty and equivocality. As information increases, uncertainty decreases. In situations where organizations are faced with a high degree of uncertainty, a large number of questions has to be asked and more information needs to be acquired to learn the answers. The assumption …

A Justification For Implementing A Monetary Incentive Plan For All Salaried Employees, Peter N. Pastore Jr. Mar 1986

A Justification For Implementing A Monetary Incentive Plan For All Salaried Employees, Peter N. Pastore Jr.

Master's Theses

The current organizational status of the hunan resource has undergone significant changes. Recent technological advances and increased global competition are causing a shift from labor intensive to capital intensive production in the industrialized nations, with an accompanying emphasis on product quality. Concomitantly, (1) the quality of the machinery depends on the hunan variable in the producing company; and (2) while machines can be sped up to increase the quantity produced, the calibration of that equipment, for example, is left up to the human factor. Since these technological advances are projected to continue, more and more emphasis will be placed on …

Blau's Theory Of Structural Differentiation Revisited: A Theory Of Structural Change Or Scale?, John B. Cullen, Kenneth S. Anderson, Douglas D. Blaker Jan 1986

Blau's Theory Of Structural Differentiation Revisited: A Theory Of Structural Change Or Scale?, John B. Cullen, Kenneth S. Anderson, Douglas D. Blaker

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The major objective of this study was to determine if Blau's (1970) theory of structural differentiation better captures differences in scale between organizations or structural changes within organizations. Data gathered on 134 Ph.D.-granting universities over nine years permitted us to compare results of within-organizations tests of Blau's theory those from both cross-sectional and longitudinal between-organization tests. The findings suggest that the theory's power lies in explaining structural differences between organizations rather than in explaining structural change.

An Exploratory Study Of Organizational Trust & Its Multiple Dimensions: A Case Study Of General Motors, Kerry Hart Dec 1985

An Exploratory Study Of Organizational Trust & Its Multiple Dimensions: A Case Study Of General Motors, Kerry Hart

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Over 1700 employees of the General Motors Corporation defined trust and described personal work experiences that affected their trust toward the organization. These employee comments were factor analyzed to determine the dimensions of organizational trust. An instrument was developed from employee comments to measure the level of trust in a GM location. With the level of trust quantified, the demographic effects on trust and the relationship between trust and management's communication effectiveness were investigated.

This approach provided new knowledge of trust in an industrial environment. Three dimensions of organizational trust were identified: Openness/Congruity, Shared Values, and Autonomy/Feedback. Age, length of …

The Impact Of Microcomputers On Engineering And Technical Management Functions, Salvatore Savino

Theses

The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of managers as to the effect of computers on management functions.

Manager perceptions were determined by using a ratio scale of value ranging between 0 and 100. Findings are based on questionnaire responses of 121 top, middle, and lower managers in 120 firms in the United States.

Several hypotheses were examined in the study relative to (1) perceived computer impact on management levels, (2) perceived computer impact on the traditional functions of management, (3) perceived computer impact on levels and functions of management (interaction).

Support was provided for hypothesis of …

Development Of New Products Involving Various Uncertainties For Success, Manuel J. Senra May 1985

Development Of New Products Involving Various Uncertainties For Success, Manuel J. Senra

Theses

The development of new products is a very important task for any company, since the survival of most of the companies depends on their ability to introduce new products on the market. This is not, by all means, an easy task; it is seen from the large number of unsuccessful new products reported.

It is been proved that out of every ten products which emerge from Research and Development(R & D), only two become successes. For reasons like the one mentioned and because larger and larger funds are allocated to R & D, it is a very important task to …

Organization Structure And Financial Market Performance: A Preliminary Test, Richard A. Bettis, Andrew Chen Jan 1985

Organization Structure And Financial Market Performance: A Preliminary Test, Richard A. Bettis, Andrew Chen

Historical Working Papers

Firms in the petroleum industry adopting a multidivisional structure arestudied to observe the impact of structural change on financial performance. The outcome did not clearly show divisional structure to be a determining factor in performance. There is some suggestion that this may have a great deal to do with the vertical integration inherent in the petroleum industry.
