Successor Employers' Obligations Under The National Labor Relations Act, Ting-Wang Lu May 1991

Successor Employers' Obligations Under The National Labor Relations Act, Ting-Wang Lu

Theses

A wave of business acquisitions is currently sweeping the American corporate scene. Companies are purchasing both unionized and non-unionized businesses at a dizzying pace.

Not surprisingly, after years of confrontational contract renewals, management and 10 unions at the New York Daily News are jockeying for position in talks over agreements that expire on March 30, 1990. Throughout the long negotiation process then the strike began on October 25, 1990. End with Robert Maxwell, the British press baron, signing an agreement on his purchase of the Daily News on March 14, 1991. Obviously, this question of successor employers' obligations is one …

Interpreting And Responding To Strategic Issues: The Impact Of National Culture, Susan C. Schneider, Arnoud De Meyer May 1991

Interpreting And Responding To Strategic Issues: The Impact Of National Culture, Susan C. Schneider, Arnoud De Meyer

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Perceptions of environmental uncertainty and organizational control influence strategic behavior. As national culture influences these perceptions we expect to find cultural differences in interpretation and response to strategic issues. Given a case describing an issue concerning deregulation of the U.S. banking industry, managers completed questionnaires rating interpretations and responses to that issue. National culture was found to influence interpretation and responses. In particular, Latin European managers when compared with other managers were more likely to interpret the issue as a crisis and as a threat. Latin Europeans were also more likely to recommend proactive behavior. This study indicates that different …

Maintaining Accounting As The Paramount Interest In Accounting Research: Re-Examining The Contributions Of D.R. Scott, Mark A. Covaleski, Mark William Dirsmith

Accounting Historians Journal

Cushing's [1989] recent analysis of Kuhn's [1970] characterization of the state of crisis within a discipline's research agenda suggests that the accounting discipline is showing symptoms of such a crisis. In this paper, D.R. Scott's [1931] classical work The Cultural Significance of Accounts is developed in terms of it being one of the earlier and more significant efforts to recognize a pending crisis within the accounting research arena. Scott's work is defined as not only being a precursor to identifying the crisis in accounting research, but also as providing a meaningful basis for addressing the significant issues embedded within the …

Strategic Competitiveness In The 1990s: Challenges And Opportunities For U.S. Executives, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, Jeffrey S. Harrison Jan 1991

Strategic Competitiveness In The 1990s: Challenges And Opportunities For U.S. Executives, Michael A. Hitt, Robert E. Hoskisson, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Management Faculty Publications

U.S. firms face a major global competitiveness challenge. Although the problems relate, in part, to differences in the economic structure, history and cultural differences between the U.S. and foreign rivals, these factors may not explain as much of the variance in competitiveness as they did in the past. Competitiveness problems are also linked to a number of strategic factors under the control of managers. Among them are the absorption of managerial energy in mergers and acquisitions, increasing levels of debt, increasing firm size, greater firm diversification, lack of investment in human capital and inappropriate corporate culture.

In response to these …

This Project Completion Report (PCR) has been written to meet the project monitoring requirements of AIDAB.

Because the ACNARP Project was part of a larger joint WB/IFAD project known as the National Agricultural Research Project (NARP), a summary of ACNARP and its progress and achievements, cannot be divorced from NARP. The report should therefore be read within the context that ACNARP alone has not been responsible for all the developments and achievements listed. Achievements in relation to some of the project objectives have been the result of Thai inputs, often with advice from ACNARP, rather than being able to be …

Foreword, Rosabeth Moss Kanter Mar 1990

Foreword, Rosabeth Moss Kanter

New England Journal of Public Policy

Two significant facts are apparent from reading this volume. First, the authors are themselves examples of women overcoming barriers, breaking into formerly all-male domains, succeeding against the odds, and exercising economic, political, and educational leadership — on behalf of other women as well as on behalf of the institutions they serve. Thus their own lives are eloquent rebuke to anyone who still thinks that women cannot manage effectively in any realm, or that women must always take second place to men, or that family responsibilities make women less serious about public responsibilities, or that women fail to help one another; …

The Cim Journey : The Allen-Bradley Pilot Cim Cell In Twinsburg, Ohio, Henry C. Co, A. Dale Flowers Mar 1990

The Cim Journey : The Allen-Bradley Pilot Cim Cell In Twinsburg, Ohio, Henry C. Co, A. Dale Flowers

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The Allen-Bradley (A-B) Twinsburg plant assembles printed circuit boards (PCB's) for four geographically remote engineering departments. Each engineering department uses different CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) systems to meet application-specific design requirements. The journey to CIM began at the same time as A-B's decision to implement surface-mount technology (SMT) to increase product function while maintaining product size. CIM allowed Allen-Bradley to leverage its investment in SMT by integrating the assembly cell with the design databases of the four operating divisions.

Job satisfaction questionnaires were distributed both before and after the six month implementation period. Data analysis revealed significant differences between the two groups. The …

A Retail Branch Profitability Measurement Model For The Thrift Industry, Rex L. Smith Iii Jan 1990

A Retail Branch Profitability Measurement Model For The Thrift Industry, Rex L. Smith Iii

Master's Theses

Deregulation of the financial services industry has created a need for management to adapt a different approach to operations. Drastic regulatory and environmental changes have forced thrifts and banks to concentrate on increasing efficiency and core profitability from the retail branch network. Once considered to be highly bureaucratic, financial institutions are trimming back off ice review and focusing on a more decentralized leaner operation. Expensive mergers and large conglomerate financial powerhouses have created a need for increased management controls and reasonable methods of measuring the true profitability of the individual business units within a financial services company.
