Vocal Response To Pain In Piglets, Daniel M. Weary, Leah A. Braithwaite, David Fraser Mar 1998

Vocal Response To Pain In Piglets, Daniel M. Weary, Leah A. Braithwaite, David Fraser

Farm Animal Welfare Collection

Three experiments were performed attempting to establish the validity of vocal measures as an indicator of the immediate response to pain in domestic piglets. Vocalisations were measured while piglets were subjected to the routine farm practice of castration without anaesthetic, or restrained identically but not castrated (i.e., sham-castrated). In Experiment 1 we measured how calling changed during the different stages of the procedure, and in Experiments 2 and 3 we measured the effect of different restraint techniques. Piglets that were castrated produced significantly more high frequency calls ( >1000 Hz) than sham castrates in all three experiments. In Experiment 1, …

Externalities From Roaming Livestock: Explaining The Demise Of The Open Range, Terence J. Centner, Ronald C. Griffin Jan 1998

Externalities From Roaming Livestock: Explaining The Demise Of The Open Range, Terence J. Centner, Ronald C. Griffin

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Fence-in laws in most states require ranchers to pay for fences to keep their livestock from trespassing onto others' property. Some states, or jurisdictions within states, have a fence-out rule that requires ranchers' neighbors to pay for fences to keep livestock out. Both rules are Pareto optimal. Using a potential Pareto criterion, we show that a preference for fence-out in some areas may end as conditions change, such as increased nonranching land uses. Changed conditions may have legal consequences. Specific fence-out and fence cost-sharing provisions may be potentially Pareto inefficient and may be challenged for being unconstitutional under the due …

Constraints As Opportunities, Umesh Rajamani

Lila Poonawalla, CMD of Tetra Pak India, a company that is in the forefront of packaging and promoting liquid food in the country, speaks about the challenges of marketing packaged liquid food - the immense possibilities, the constraints - ranging from a vacillating government policy to the conservatism of the Indian consumer - the need for constant innovation and Tetra Pak's firm belief in growing their business in tandem with their customers'.

A Frailty Model For Projection Of Human Mortality Improvements, Shaun S. Wang, Robert L. Brown Jan 1998

A Frailty Model For Projection Of Human Mortality Improvements, Shaun S. Wang, Robert L. Brown

Journal of Actuarial Practice (1993–2006)

Based on the everyday observations that individual human beings vary significantly in their capacity to combat death, we adopt a so-called frailty model of human mortality. This frailty model assumes that each individual in a given population is endowed with his or her own frailty index, r, which remains constant for life. In addition, we assume that the individual's force of mortality (hazard rate function) at age x, Ux(r), satisfies Ux(r) = rUx where Ux is the population's base force of mortality at age x. Given the probability distribution of the frailty index among the newborns in the population, an …

An Evaluation Of The Causes Of Urban Poverty In America: A Cross Section Analysis, Juan Loredo Jan 1998

An Evaluation Of The Causes Of Urban Poverty In America: A Cross Section Analysis, Juan Loredo

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

In this study, I analyze and evaluate the determinants of poverty rate differentials among 77 urban centers in the United States, as described by Isabel Sawhill (1988). The regression results show that demographic changes, education, welfare programs, unemployment rates, per capita income and income inequality are the most important factors that have a strong statistical link to urban poverty rates. Based on my analysis, the crime rate is not a statistically significant determinant of the rate of poverty among American families.

To Develop And Implement A Quality Assurance System Based On Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (Haccp) To A Cook-Freeze Operation: Research Project, Denisa Baca

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this study was to identify and develop a suitable quality assurance system based on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), which was implemented to the ‘cook-freeze' operation, currently employed at Healthcarc Foods. In addition, the quality assurance system was implemented as a systematic approach to food quality, and as a means of ensuring food safety. The samples, which consisted of all the chicken dishes, were used in the development of the HACCP plans comprising of flowcharts and HACCP control charts. The Effects Of Nutrition Package Claims, Nutrition Facts Panels, And Motivation To Process Nutrition Information On Consumer Product Evaluations, Scott B. Keller, Mike Landry, Jeanne Olson, Anne M. Velliquette, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews Oct 1997

The Effects Of Nutrition Package Claims, Nutrition Facts Panels, And Motivation To Process Nutrition Information On Consumer Product Evaluations, Scott B. Keller, Mike Landry, Jeanne Olson, Anne M. Velliquette, Scot Burton, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In a laboratory experiment using a between-subjects design, the authors examine the effects on nutrition and product evaluations of nutrition claims made (e.g., "99% fat free; " "low in calories") on a product package, product nutrition value levels, and enduring motivation to process nutrition information. Enduring motivation is shown to moderate the effects of product nutrition value on consumer evaluations. Also, nutrition claims interact with product nutrition value in affecting consumer perceptions of manufacturer credibility. Given the availability of nutrient levels in the Nutrition Facts panel on the back of the mock package, nutrition claims on the front of the …

Economic and Financial Review

The economic growth process of a country is determined by a number of factors among which is technological change. Increased output/performance permitted by this goes a long way in alleviating poverty. Rapid and sustained economic growth utilizing a new industrial strategy calls for proficient use of the natural advantages of modern infrastructures which further serves as a poverty-reducing strategy. The author states that the most credible option by which the poor can receive a fair share of the benefits of development is by subjecting the economy to the full discipline and rigours of market forces for a poverty-reducing growth. Measurement Issues In Poverty, A. Englama, A. Bamidele Sep 1997

Measurement Issues In Poverty, A. Englama, A. Bamidele

Economic and Financial Review

The paper defines poverty as certain disabilities such as the inability to participate with dignity in society. It also demonstrates that in measuring poverty, emphasis should not be mainly on income or consumption, hut that cognizance should be taken of social, economic and basic infrastructures as well as environmental factors. The paper farther mentions some inherent problems in measuring poverty such as conceptual and data problems. Once these problems are overcome, a simple head count could provide an insight into poverty measurement. J11e depth and severity of poverty can be determined by the P-Index which captures the number of the …
