Direct Selling By Urban Farmers: Constraints In Value Creation, Albert C. Manyengawana Jan 2005

Direct Selling By Urban Farmers: Constraints In Value Creation, Albert C. Manyengawana

Masters Culminating Experiences (1993-2011)

According to Heimlich (1989), one of the leading development economists who has published several articles on small and urban farming, there are two major forms of urban farms namely backyard gardens and community gardens. These may, further be classified into recreational, adaptive, and traditional farms. Urban farms emerged as a direct response to beautify the landscape, provide food security and serve as an additional income source. Over time, changes in the farming sector allowed farmers to adopt direct marketing initiatives, circumventing the intermediaries in the distribution chain. These tactics of selling directly to consumers included farmers’ markets, road-side sales, and …

Market-Orientation And The Multi-Factor Productivity Of Cherokee Indian Farmers Before Removal, Matthew T. Gregg Jan 2005

Market-Orientation And The Multi-Factor Productivity Of Cherokee Indian Farmers Before Removal, Matthew T. Gregg

Business Faculty Publications

The efficiency of Cherokee Indian agriculture before removal has been debated since the early nineteenth century, yet no study has employed quantitative methods to estimate the multifactor productivity of these farmers. For this investigation I employed a unique census collected in 1835 to estimate Cherokee household-level technical efficiency and scale elasticities to determine which group (classified in terms of economic and racial characteristics) within this diverse Nation achieved the highest farm productivity. The analysis reveals that among non-slaveholding Cherokee!r--the majority of Cherokee households in the Southeast--market-oriented units that were unrelated to any particular household racial composition achieved the highest …

A Guide To The Management & Operation Of A Chinese Restaurant In The United States, Wen-Chiung Huang Jan 2005

A Guide To The Management & Operation Of A Chinese Restaurant In The United States, Wen-Chiung Huang

Theses

Before writing this thesis, the reason I choose for the issue of management and operation of Chinese restaurant is not because so much mass communication was related. It is the idea of the restaurant business how it to be created by using media or people's words of mouth. It is difficult to start a new business in the foreign country. Restaurant business does the same. In the early a late age of immigration, people realized only work hard can made a better life for themselves and their next generation. They started have their own business, created job opportunity even contributed …

Marketing Locally Produced Foods: Consumer And Farmer Opinions In Washington County, Nebraska, Mindi L. Schneider, Charles A. Francis

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Local food system potentials were studied in Washington County, Nebraska, United States. As a departure from most studies of locally based systems, farmers were surveyed in addition to consumers for potential participation. Data about the current food system and opinions and preferences for local production, marketing, and purchasing of food were collected using self-administered mail questionnaires. The response rate was 35% for the farmer survey and 37% for the consumer survey. Results indicated that, on the farming side of the food system, conventional corn and soybean production and marketing predominated in Washington County, and farmer interest in producing for local …

A Framework For Describing And Classifying Multicriteria Portfolio Selection Problems: An Object-Oriented Approach, Heinz Roland Weistroffer, Charles H. Smith Jan 2005

A Framework For Describing And Classifying Multicriteria Portfolio Selection Problems: An Object-Oriented Approach, Heinz Roland Weistroffer, Charles H. Smith

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Many decisions require not a single solution alternative, but a set or portfolio of alternatives. For example, a business generally produces not a single product, but a portfolio of products, and a project is tackled not by a single individual, but by a team of individuals. Unfortunately, the portfolio selection problem has been largely neglected in the literature. Though many specific problem environments have been discussed using heuristic, ad hoc methods, no general methodology or theory has been developed. This paper proposes an object-oriented framework to provide a theoretical foundation for future research on the portfolio selection problem.

Student Performance In Upper - Division Business Core Courses : Using Control Variables To Determine The Effect Of Class Size, Donna A. Driscoll, Paul J. Lazarony, Janna Arney, Earl J. Weiss Jan 2005

Student Performance In Upper - Division Business Core Courses : Using Control Variables To Determine The Effect Of Class Size, Donna A. Driscoll, Paul J. Lazarony, Janna Arney, Earl J. Weiss

Management Faculty Publications

Although the effect of class size upon student performance has been the focus of numerous studies, the results have been extremely mixed, including positive effects, no effects, and negative effects. The authors of this study believe that this lack of consensus could be due, at least in part, to the shortage of control variables employed in previous studies. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the addition of four control variables (course being taught, length of class period, instructor, and student ability level) to the analysis would be helpful in isolating the effect, if any, of class size …

Evolving Food Marketing Systems In Recovering Economies: Some Lessons From Croatia’S Gavrilović And Emerging ‘Oldies-But-Goodies’, Clifford J. Shultz, Biljana Crnjak-Karanović, Sanda Renko

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

A well-functioning food marketing system contributes greatly to domestic socio-economic development and global connectivity during periods of recovery and/or transition. Gavrilović, an established and historically successful company, i.e., an “Oldie-but-Goody,” is a case study in survival and adaptation; ultimately perhaps a model for other food marketing companies that must overcome rigorous geographical, social, political and economic challenges. This paper discusses food marketing systems and their development, provides a brief overview of Croatia’s food marketing system, and shares some lessons and best practices from Gavrilović.

Masculinity In The Making: Men’S Increased Consumption Of Strength Training, Roger Sherlock, Olivia Freeman, Andrew Dunne Jan 2005

Masculinity In The Making: Men’S Increased Consumption Of Strength Training, Roger Sherlock, Olivia Freeman, Andrew Dunne

Conference papers

This paper explores the relationship between the body, masculinity and the consumption of body-focussed activities. It examines the meaning and importance of strength training for men. Strength training is of interest because its increase in popularity is occurring at a particular point in time when a growing number of men are experiencing insecurities over their masculine identities as a result of recent socioeconomic changes. This paper proposes that men today are facing a dilemma in terms of masculine identity. This dilemma hinges on the growing objectification of the male body in the media and its cultural messages regarding masculinity.

Impact Of Microfinance Programs On Children's Education: Do The Gender Of The Borrower And The Delivery Model Matter?, Nathalie Holvoet Dec 2004

Impact Of Microfinance Programs On Children's Education: Do The Gender Of The Borrower And The Delivery Model Matter?, Nathalie Holvoet

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

This article highlights the effects particular features of microfinance programs have on childhood education. Using data from a South India household survey, the article examines how microfinance impacts schooling and literacy, how credit enters the household, and who brings it in. Regression results show that, in the case of direct bank-borrower credit delivery, it does not matter whether credit enters the household through the mother or the father. However, large differences occur when mothers obtain credit through women's groups. Analysis indicates that combined financial and social-group intermediation leads to higher educational inputs and outputs, mainly for girls. Individual interviewis with …

Comparison Of Pakistani Economy With Asean Economies, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2004

Comparison Of Pakistani Economy With Asean Economies, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

It is now widely accepted that the Asian economies have done extremely well in terms of economic growth and poverty reduction during the last three to four decades or so despite the crisis of 1997. Three decades ago, China was among the World’s poorest countries with 80 percent of the population having incomes less than US$1 per day and only a third of all adults able to read or write. By 2000 the proportion of the poor (income less than US$1 per day) had declined to around 16 percent. Korea and Pakistan had identical per capita incomes of $100 in …

Relating Diet, Demographics And Lifestyle To Increasing U.S. Obesity Rates, Christiane Schroeter Nov 2004

Relating Diet, Demographics And Lifestyle To Increasing U.S. Obesity Rates, Christiane Schroeter

Agribusiness

Changes in the American lifestyle are putting more individuals at risk due to the declining quality of their diets. In the last 20 years, the readily available high-fat foods (e.g., "fast foods") combined with the decreased caloric requirements due to lower physical activity levels is assumed to be the major factor in the sharp rise in the prevalence of obesity. The typical away-from-home meal is less healthy than food at home, since it tends to contain more total fat and saturated fat, less calcium, fiber, and iron, and fewer servings of fruits and vegetables. Furthermore, due to the super-sizing trend …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 8 - The Nutritional Management Of Barramundi, Brett Glencross Oct 2004

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 8 - The Nutritional Management Of Barramundi, Brett Glencross

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

Barramundi nutrition research has been undertaken since 1988. Since that time the requirements for most nutrients, energy demand, ingredient utilisation and the effects of nutrition on flesh quality aspects have all been examined to varying extents.

Optimal protein content of diets has been shown to vary with diet energy density and also the size of fish which are being fed. Most studies have suggested a protein requirement from 45% to 55%. For small fish a protein to energy ratio of 25 to 30 g/MJ is suggested. Limited work has been done on fish larger than 500 g. The 10 essential …

Adherence Of Prime-Time Television Advertising Disclosures To The “Clear And Conspicuous" Standard: 1990 Vs. 2002, Mariea Grubbs Hoy, J. Craig Andrews Oct 2004

Adherence Of Prime-Time Television Advertising Disclosures To The “Clear And Conspicuous" Standard: 1990 Vs. 2002, Mariea Grubbs Hoy, J. Craig Andrews

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

In 1990, one-fourth of all national television commercials contained disclosures, yet none of the disclosures adhered to all of the Federal Trade Commission's "clear and conspicuous" standard (CCS). As a result of marketplace changes and a 2001 Federal Trade Commission and National Advertising Division joint workshop, the authors anticipate an increase in the number of disclosures and greater adherence to the CCS. The authors find a significant increase in disclosure incidence; however, adherence declines or remains unchanged for most individual guidelines. Finally, the authors provide public policy implications and offer suggestions to increase adherence to the CCS.

End-Of-Life Decision-Making Through Advanced Directives And Pallative Care, Beth Lada Morse Sep 2004

End-Of-Life Decision-Making Through Advanced Directives And Pallative Care, Beth Lada Morse

Student Scholarship

There are many socio-cultural and economic factors that shape discussions about treatment options for terminally ill patients. These factors include access to life prolonging medical options, societal priorities regarding the allocation of limited health care resources, cost constraints of payers and societal consensus that patient autonomy underpins life-sustaining treatment decisions. The focus of this study is primarily directed to issues of end-of-life care decisions as they relate to advance directives (AD) and palliative care. It is argued that when death is expected or foreseeable, that advance care planning has value for the individual, family, organization and community. It is debatable …
