Strategic Planning In Small Nonprofit Behavioral Health Organizations, Amanda Machamer Becker
Strategic Planning In Small Nonprofit Behavioral Health Organizations, Amanda Machamer Becker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Rural communities in the United States depend on small community-based nonprofits to provide access to food, nutrition, transportation, and other social determinants of health. Despite this essential role, some leaders of small nonprofits forgo participating in strategic planning because they believe that the process can be time consuming and expensive. Strategic planning may help organizations of any size to be organized, mission focused, outcome based, and successful. The strategic planning process helps to identify which outcomes demonstrate effectiveness and increase program sustainability. The purpose of this study was to explore the ways that strategic planning may assist small rural community-based …
Strategies For Catalyzing Clinicians’ Support Of Telemedicine Programs In Rural Communities, Jonathan Liwag
Strategies For Catalyzing Clinicians’ Support Of Telemedicine Programs In Rural Communities, Jonathan Liwag
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Clinicians’ failure to accept contemporary technology has been a critical barrier to telemedicine program adoption. Staff technical challenges and resistance to change can affect technology return on investment, which concerns telemedicine program leaders. Grounded in Davis’s technology acceptance model, the purpose of this qualitative, descriptive single case study was to explore strategies used by program leaders in the Marianas Islands who successfully gained clinicians’ acceptance of contemporary technology. The participants were 5 program leaders recommended by their institution because of their leadership role and telemedicine technologies experience. Data were collected from 4 face-to-face and 1 audio teleconference interview with the …

Increasing healthcare costs need to be contained in order to maintain equality of access to care for all EU citizens. A cross-disciplinary consortium of experts was supported by the EU FP7 research programme, to produce a roadmap on cost containment, while maintaining or improving the quality of healthcare. The roadmap comprises two drivers: person-centred care and health promotion; five critical enablers also need to be addressed: information technology, quality measures, infrastructure, incentive systems, and contracting strategies.
Willingness-To-Pay For Halal And Branded Poultry In Northern Mozambique, Alison J. Creasey, L. Lanier Nalley
Willingness-To-Pay For Halal And Branded Poultry In Northern Mozambique, Alison J. Creasey, L. Lanier Nalley
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
While price typically drives consumers’ food-purchasing decisions in low-income countries, religious attributes associated with food production and corporate branding could influence buying patterns. In Mozambique, more than 46% of people were living below the poverty line of ($0.31 USD) per day in 2018. That being said, in the Nampula Province (the location of this study), which is the second poorest province in the country, over 25% of the population is Muslim and may be willing-to-pay (WTP) a premium for Halal meat products to uphold Islamic beliefs. Like many parts of sub-Saharan Africa, poultry is the fastest-growing source of protein. Since …

Two Essays On Food Environment, Nutrition, And Food Insecurity, Suliman Abdulaziz Almojel
Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics
A healthy food environment is fundamental to good health. It contributes to the reduction of obesity and the development of healthy eating habits. In spite of this, many people in the United States (US) have been hypnotized to become obese due to the current food environment. Recently, the US has consistently ranked high in the world in terms of obesity. The rising rate is symptomatic of consuming unhealthy diets. Besides, the double-edged crisis of the US food environment and obesity poses a major threat to food security and public health. Therefore, studying the US food environment is important to sustain …

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe United States has a 20% average overall turnover rate, requiring employers to absorb the additional costs related to employee turnover, which can exceed 300% of each departed employee’s annual salary. Human resource leaders who lack strategies to retain veterans as employees experience increased turnover and replacement costs. Grounded in person organization fit theory and human capital theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore the strategies leaders in human resource departments use to retain United States veterans. The participants included three human resources leaders in Washington who developed successful retention strategies for veterans. Data were …
Factory To Table: A Philosophic Analysis Of The Justice Or Lack Thereof Of Agricultural Markets, Will Carter
Factory To Table: A Philosophic Analysis Of The Justice Or Lack Thereof Of Agricultural Markets, Will Carter
CMC Senior Theses
How food is produced has dramatic consequences on how we live, our world’s justice, and the future of our planet. In a world increasingly driven by neoliberalism, agricultural markets have been incentivized to industrialize, globalize, and consolidate. This has resulted in the global dominance of a new type of agriculture, industrial agriculture, driven by the market logic of lowering costs and raising profits. Industrial agriculture has undoubtedly generated the profound benefit of cheaper, more plentiful food in much of the world. These favorable innovations lead many scholars to argue that free markets produce the most just and efficient arrangements for …

Understanding food choice is critical to be able to address the rise in obesity rates around the globe. In this paper, we examine the relationship between measured (BMI, using self-reported height and weight) and perceived weight status with the number of calories ordered in a controlled online food choice exercise. A total of 1044 participants completed an online food choice exercise in which they selected ingredients for a sandwich from five categories: meat/protein, cheese, spread/dressing, bread, and vegetables. We examine the number of calories ordered by participants and use linear regression to study the relationship of BMI category relative to …

Adoption Factors Of The Internet Of Things In Quality Management Of The Thai Food Processing Supply Chain: Manufacturing Perspectives, Pakorn Opasvitayarux
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The introduction of quality management Internet of things (QM IoT) can help food supply chain members to enhance real-time visibility, quality, safety, and efficiency of products and processes. Current literature indicates three main research gaps, including lack of studies in QM IoT in food supply chain, vagueness of integrative adoption of new technology framework, and deficient research covered both adoption attitude and intention in the same model. This study proposed an analysis model based on the technological-organizational-environmental (TOE) framework, reinforced by the collaborative structure to capture the importance of supply chain network, and used the partial least square-structural equation modeling …

Understanding The Nature Of Non-Profit Incubators With Other Sector Incubators In The Founding Of Social Change Organisations By Social Entrepreneurs, Jesus N. Valero, Marina Saitgalina, Rachel A. Black
School of Public Service Faculty Publications
Incubators have been studied extensively in the private sector, such as those that engage in technological innovation or growing small businesses. The scholarship has not sufficiently explored the efforts of incubators in the nonprofit sector that help create programs supporting, mentoring, and cultivating social entrepreneurs. There are numerous documented cases of nonprofit organizations establishing initiatives that help motivated entrepreneurs achieve social change; but research is lagging in developing a systematic understanding of these effort’s impact, and the factors associated with the success of nonprofit initiatives that support social entrepreneurs. This paper seeks to understand the nature of nonprofit organizations that …

Fixing Esg: Are Mandatory Esg Disclosures The Solution To Misleading Ratings?, Javier El-Hage
Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law
This Note provides an overview of the debate around the current state of ESG disclosure practices, and the perceived need for the SEC to establish a system of mandatory ESG disclosures. Part I explores the inherent difficulty of defining ESG, the problematic nature of quantifying and measuring ESG factors, and the tools currently being used by market-leading ratings firms and investment vehicles. In particular, this part addresses the inconsistencies of ESG self-reporting, the influence of this practice on the ensuing ratings, and the potential for investors to be misled as a result.
Part II of the Note explores the possible …

This paper examines nonprofits' capacity for responding to simultaneous hurricane-pandemic threat, addressing: (1) strategies nonprofits use to deliver services during the COVID-19 pandemic, and (2) how natural hazards may affect nonprofit roles in emergency service delivery during a pandemic. Data come from a survey of New Orleans-based nonprofits demonstrating effects of pandemic on local nonprofit service delivery, and workshops with U.S. coastal community stakeholders exploring expectations for nonprofit roles in emergency operations nationwide. Nonprofits have applied resilient strategies including virtual operations, staff reductions, and funding diversification, but vulnerabilities remain. Findings guide a research agenda for building nonprofit and community resilience.

We begin by arguing that the often used algorithm for the discovery and use of disease risk factors, stepwise logistic regression, is unstable. We then argue that there are other algorithms available that are much more stable and reliable (e.g. the lasso and gradient boosting). We then propose a protocol for the discovery and use of risk factors using lasso or boosting variable selection. We then illustrate the use of the protocol with a set of prostate cancer data and show that it recovers known risk factors. Finally, we use the protocol to identify new and important SNP based risk …
Effects Of States’ Laws On Youth Physical Activity Participation And Obesity Prevalence, Chae Young Chang
Effects Of States’ Laws On Youth Physical Activity Participation And Obesity Prevalence, Chae Young Chang
Midwest Social Sciences Journal
The alarming prevalence of obesity and lack of physical activity among adolescents led to immediate policy action to address these concerns. Accordingly, many states introduced and enacted their own legislation to encourage physical activity in schools. Few studies have explored the effectiveness of the new legislation, however, especially at the state level. To answer the fundamental question of whether policy is effective and to describe the varying effects of state obesity policies, this study analyzed the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System from 2007 to 2017. Using the difference-in-differences method, this study found that legislative efforts to encourage physical activity had …
Foundations Of Publicly Subsidized Sport Stadiums: The Case Of U.S. Bank Stadium, Tanner P. Jerome
Foundations Of Publicly Subsidized Sport Stadiums: The Case Of U.S. Bank Stadium, Tanner P. Jerome
Health and Nutritional Sciences Graduate Students Plan B Capstone Projects
This study aims to address the common considerations concerning publicly subsidized sport stadiums. To provide an in-depth illustration into this process, a case study narrative of the Minnesota Vikings’ journey to receiving a public subsidization totaling $498 million for the construction of the U.S. Bank Stadium is presented. As sport stadiums seemingly incorporate more luxurious amenities each year, it is not uncommon to see the price tag for a professional stadium to surpass a billion dollars. Given this colossal cost, it has become difficult for private investments to finance an entire stadium alone. Therefore, combining the private financing of a …

Both regulatory agencies and nonprofit organizations seek to understand how different tactics and appeals contained in food and public health advertisements might influence the food intake of an increasingly dieting-concerned population. This article addresses this important issue by examining how consumers who are concerned with their diets react to rich images of unhealthy food consumption. Results of two experiments show that exposure to food advertisements containing unhealthy food consumption imagery reduces food intake among consumers chronically concerned with dieting, whereas a third experiment shows a similar decrease in intended consumption when a public health advertisement portrays the consumption of unhealthy …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Despite the benefits of diets containing fresh fruits and vegetables such as a lower risk of heart disease, very few Americans, especially low-income individuals, consume enough to meet the recommended amounts. For our Honor’s Project our team focused on the Ohio based SNAP-EBT food share program Produce Perks. To do so we studied two sets of data to our answer our research questions; ‘Has COVID-19 further impacted low-income individuals’ fruit and vegetable consumption’, How is the Produce Perks program impacted low-income consumers’, and “How can this program be better marketed to include more low-income individuals. Through our research we were …
