Addressing Grand Challenges Through The Bottom-Up Marketing Approach: Lessons From Subsistence Marketplaces And Marketplace Literacy, Madhubalan Viswanathan, Arun Sreekumar, Srinivas Sridharan, Gaurav R. Sinha
Marketing & Business Law Faculty Works
We present a bottom-up marketing approach as a pathway to addressing the grand challenge of poverty and inequality for the marketing discipline. We derive this approach from the research stream on radically different contexts of subsistence marketplaces. Research on subsistence marketplaces has typically explored micro-level phenomena but also traversed upward and explained aggregate phenomena at higher levels. We present a conceptual framework to encapsulate general and granular elements of the bottom-up marketing approach. Study 1 demonstrates general elements of the framework through a retrospective examination of the global diffusion of a marketplace literacy program. Study 2 demonstrates the more granular …

Local Ceos And Voluntary Disclosure: Evidence From Non-Gaap Earnings, Jiwoo Seo, Adam Esplin, Yun Ke, Kari Olsen
Hunt Institute Working Paper Series
In the U.S. CEO labor market, firms are more likely to hire local CEOs than non-local CEOs. We explore the consequences of this hiring practice on voluntary disclosure of firm financial information in the non-GAAP earnings setting. Using a sample of S&P 1500 firms from 2003 to 2020, we show that firms led by local CEOs are less likely to provide non-GAAP earnings than those led by non-local CEOs. This result holds across a battery of robustness tests, including a placebo test, adopting different matching procedures, an instrumental variable approach, various regression specifications, and alternative samples using CEO turnover events. …

The Heterogeneous Effects Of Cannabis Dispensaries On Crime: The Importance Of Foot Traffic, Thomas Lebesmuehlbacher, Justin Roush, Rhet A. Smith
Hunt Institute Working Paper Series
This paper pairs exact dispensary locations with city block level crime data to study the impact of medical cannabis dispensaries on crime in the state of Florida from 2016-2019. Leveraging a Florida state law that requires broadly uniform security provisions across dispensaries, we capture important dispensary heterogeneity by incorporating customer volume and local non-dispensary foot traffic with smartphone geopositional data. We use not-yet-operational dispensary locations as a control group and a geo-spatial difference-in-differences framework and find reductions in larceny, vehicle burglary, and motor vehicle theft following the opening of high-volume dispensaries. We fail to find evidence of similar deterrent effects …

To address this gap, this study uses an augmented gravity model to evaluate the factors that have influenced catfish and trout imports into the United States. The analysis was conducted using the Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimator to address issues of heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation, and zero trade flows. The results highlight the importance of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and exchange rates in …

Without context, it is easy to interpret rural America as a dying, outdated part of the country, but the reality is far more complex. A research study was conducted that surveyed 400 actively enrolled college students from schools in 19 American states on three things: 1) …
