The Adolescent Development Of Small Business Owners’ Entrepreneurial Mindset, Fern Arredondo Jan 2026

The Adolescent Development Of Small Business Owners’ Entrepreneurial Mindset, Fern Arredondo

Dissertations

Purpose: The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe how small business owners in Southern California interpret experiences before age 20 that influenced the development of the eight domains of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) Entrepreneurial Mindset Index (EMI). This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach to explore how adult small business owners reflect upon and interpret experiences before age 20 that influenced the development of their entrepreneurial mindset. By examining the influence of pre-adulthood on these owners, the study aimed to deepen the understanding of how early experiences shape entrepreneurial mindsets and contribute to long-term entrepreneurial success. …

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of executives in a healthcare organization regarding internal talent development and integration with organizational strategy. The purpose of the study addressed the problem statement by examining the meaning executives ascribed to internal talent development as it relates to organizational strategy and the fostering of human capital. The problem addressed in this study was that internal talent development is often inadequately embedded in organizational strategies, limiting organizational competitiveness and long-term performance. The study sought to address the research question How do executives in a healthcare organization exploring the …

Advancing Ethical Innovation In Human–Ai Collaboration: Trust And Legitimacy In Technology-Mediated Teams, Sanket Ramchandra Patole Jan 2026

Advancing Ethical Innovation In Human–Ai Collaboration: Trust And Legitimacy In Technology-Mediated Teams, Sanket Ramchandra Patole

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

Human Resource Development (HRD) confronts a central paradox in the digital age. The technologies designed to broaden access to learning and collaboration often reproduce the same social hierarchies that HRD seeks to challenge. Artificial intelligence (AI), digital collaboration platforms, and algorithmic management are widespread features of organizational life. Yet these systems do not generate inclusive outcomes for all workers. Women of Color (WoC), situated at the intersection of racialized, gendered, and technological structures, experience digital transformation as both possibility and constraint. They encounter opaque decision systems, diminished authority in virtual teams, and digitally-mediated microaggressions, while also developing new capacities for …

Artificial Intelligence Adoption In The Workplace. An Exploration Of Augmentation, Oyinkansola O. Sodiya Jan 2026

Artificial Intelligence Adoption In The Workplace. An Exploration Of Augmentation, Oyinkansola O. Sodiya

Management Dissertations

As collaborative work with artificial intelligence (AI augmentation) gains interest, it is crucial to investigate factors that affect how employees perceive and use AI tools at work. Drawing on task-technology fit and technology adoption theories, this dissertation examines the ways in which task dimensions, organizational contexts, and individual differences affect the perceived usefulness of working with AI tools. This dissertation demonstrates that task-technology fit is fundamental. Employees in jobs with high information processing demands are likely to positively perceive the usefulness of AI augmentation relative to employees in jobs with high interpersonal demands. Employees with more proactive personalities perceive greater …

Signals Of Value: A Comparative Analysis Of Sde And Ebitda In Predicting Microbusiness Sale Price, Joseph E. Turley Jan 2026

Signals Of Value: A Comparative Analysis Of Sde And Ebitda In Predicting Microbusiness Sale Price, Joseph E. Turley

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This dissertation compares the predictive accuracy and stability of Seller’s Discretionary Earnings (SDE) and Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA) in explaining realized sale prices of microbusinesses. Microbusinesses, defined as firms with fewer than ten employees and annual revenue below $2.5 million, face persistent valuation challenges due to information asymmetry, owner dependence, and informal financial reporting. The study analyzes 5,499 completed U.S. transactions from the DealStats database (2014–2024) after applying microbusiness criteria and outlier trimming. Predictive accuracy is measured by absolute percentage error between actual sale prices and prices implied by each metric. Findings show that SDE-based predictions …

Meeting Battery Electric Vehicle Demand With A Focus On Throughput Capacity Across The Transport Nodes In The Upstream Cobalt Supply Chain, Nicholas J. Visconti Jan 2026

Meeting Battery Electric Vehicle Demand With A Focus On Throughput Capacity Across The Transport Nodes In The Upstream Cobalt Supply Chain, Nicholas J. Visconti

Dissertations

This study assesses whether cobalt transport capacity in sub-Saharan Africa is sufficient to support projected battery electric vehicle (BEV) demand under the Paris Accord. Using open-source data from ArcGIS, the Highway Capacity Manual, and the World Bank, the analysis applies a simplified linear programming approach to estimate the maximum throughput of the primary transport corridor connecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the Port of Durban. The model identifies significant constraints along the Rutenga-to-Beitbridge segment, reducing network capacity to an estimated 42,494 tons of ore per day. When converted to refined cobalt, this capacity falls well short of the …

Design Principles For Customer-Engaging Digital Service Systems: An Action Research Study, Keng Leng Siau, Xiaofeng Chen, Xin Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Digital services represent a business approach employed by organizations to operate in the digital environment. However, systematic development guidelines for developing quality digital service systems are lacking in the literature. The authors identified four general challenges for developing and implementing customer-engaging digital service systems (CEDSS). By employing the method of canonical action research in a digital service system project, they derived 10 design principles for developing high-quality CEDSS. They empirically evaluated the design principles in the development project and through follow-up focus group sessions. The design principles provide applicable and actionable guidelines for the development of CEDSS.

Does Auditor Quality Enhance Csr Disclosure?, Jimmy Lee, Chee Yeow Lim, Gerald J. Lobo, Yanping Xu Jan 2026

Does Auditor Quality Enhance Csr Disclosure?, Jimmy Lee, Chee Yeow Lim, Gerald J. Lobo, Yanping Xu

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We investigate the relation between auditor quality and client firms’ corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure. Using an international sample of firms from 36 countries over the period 2009–2018 and a measure of the extent of CSR disclosure from Bloomberg, we find strong evidence that client firms with higher quality auditors provide more CSR disclosure. In cross-sectional analyses, we show that the relation between auditor quality and CSR disclosure is accentuated when the information environment is poorer and when the financial reporting environment and the legal institutions are weaker. Lastly, we document that firms with higher quality auditors also exhibit better …

The Role Of Extra-/Co-Curricular Activities And Work On Law Graduates’ Initial Employment Outcomes, Denise Jackson, Craig Cameron Jan 2026

The Role Of Extra-/Co-Curricular Activities And Work On Law Graduates’ Initial Employment Outcomes, Denise Jackson, Craig Cameron

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Developing student employability is a strategic priority for higher education institutions and is often measured by transition to initial employment. Extra-/co-curricular activities, in addition to in-curriculum programs, can develop different aspects of student employability, supporting students in securing and transitioning to work post-graduation. This study examines the perspectives of 7000 graduates of Australian law degrees on their engagement in, and the value gained from, extra-/co-curricular, employability-building activities and paid employment during their studies between 2020 and 2023. The results indicated declining overall participation in extra-/co-curricular activities over the four-year period, and relatively greater engagement among female, younger, international and/or students …

Sociocultural Outsidership In Entrepreneurship: Rethinking The Double-Edged Role In Marginalisation, Robert J. Pidduck, Susana C. Santos, Eric W. Liguori, Reginald Tucker, Alexander Newman Jan 2026

Sociocultural Outsidership In Entrepreneurship: Rethinking The Double-Edged Role In Marginalisation, Robert J. Pidduck, Susana C. Santos, Eric W. Liguori, Reginald Tucker, Alexander Newman

Management Faculty Publications

This editorial introduces the special issue on marginalisation and entrepreneurship. While entrepreneurship research has long examined the impact of economic deprivation and structural barriers, far less attention has been given to sociocultural elements of outsidership – such as status incongruence, class-based identity conflict or cultural misalignment, among other related facets. We bring these dynamics to the fore, offering a conceptually rich yet ideologically neutral lens through which to understand how outsider dynamics can shape entrepreneurial cognition, legitimacy and venture development. Further, by synthesising emerging work across fragmented literatures, we propose a research agenda that explores sociocultural outsidership not only as …

Corporate Disclosure Meets Natural Language Processing: Topic Modeling, Disclosure Strategy, And Audit Implications, Wanxin Yu Jan 2026

Corporate Disclosure Meets Natural Language Processing: Topic Modeling, Disclosure Strategy, And Audit Implications, Wanxin Yu

2026

Corporate disclosures serve as a critical channel for firms to communicate their financial performance, strategic initiatives, and firm-specific risks. In recent years, rapid advances in natural language processing (NLP) have provided powerful new tools for extracting insights from the growing volume and complexity of corporate disclosures. This dissertation consists of three studies that explore how advanced textual analysis can reveal deeper insights into corporate disclosures, managerial behavior, and auditor practices.

The first paper (co-authored) develops a topic-based approach to measuring the substantive content of risk factor disclosures. Using an embedding-based topic modeling framework, we identify 30 interpretable risk topics and …

Heritage In Digital Literary Discourse: An Analytical Approach To Fawaz Al-Laboun's Tweets, Zuhir Hassan Saeed Alamri Jan 2026

Heritage In Digital Literary Discourse: An Analytical Approach To Fawaz Al-Laboun's Tweets, Zuhir Hassan Saeed Alamri

University of Tabuk Journal for Humanities and Social Sciences

This study examines heritage in digital literary discourse through an analytical approach to the tweets of Fawaz Al-Laboun, within a contemporary narrative context shaped by the digital sphere, where narrative forms intersect with creative expression. The study traces transformations in the presence of heritage within the digital environment and explores the potential of short-form narration when employed to generate poetic, cultural, and rhetorical meanings on social media platforms, particularly X. The study relies on the analysis of six selected digital news texts drawn from Al-Laboun's posts. These texts were chosen based on their connection to cultural memory and narrative structure, …

Pillpetz: A Smarter Way To Encourage Medication Adherence In Children, John H. Begley Jan 2026

Pillpetz: A Smarter Way To Encourage Medication Adherence In Children, John H. Begley

CMC Senior Theses

Medication adherence is usually framed as a problem of patient behavior, but this thesis argues that it is equally a problem of design. Children who take daily medication face barriers that adults often do not: developing executive function, dependence on caregivers, shifting school and home routines, privacy concerns, and stigma around being perceived as different. The standard prescription bottle, by contrast, was designed primarily for dispensing efficiency, safety, and accidental ingestion prevention—not for sustained daily use by a developing child.

This thesis proposes PillPetz, a smart pill case and digital companion that uses routine, play, dose confirmation, and caregiver-connected support …

Ceo Linguistic Stress And Abnormal Stock Returns Evidence From S&P 500 Earnings Conference Calls, Yiqi Sun Jan 2026

Ceo Linguistic Stress And Abnormal Stock Returns Evidence From S&P 500 Earnings Conference Calls, Yiqi Sun

CMC Senior Theses

Stress is pervasive among corporate executives, yet its effect on firms' future abnormal return remains largely unexplored. This paper examines whether CEO's Linguistic stress exhibited during earnings conference calls predicts future abnormal stock returns. I provided a Large Language Model (Claude Sonnet 4.6) psychology-backed prompts to analyze CEO stress from linguistic patterns in 7491 earnings call transcripts from 470 companies in the S&P 500 during 2020-2024. I found three main results. First, the CEO linguistic stress is negatively and significantly associated with the immediate market reaction, with a one-unit increase in stress score associated with a 0.9% decrease in the …

Eurovision As A Platform For Cultural Diplomacy In Times Of Conflict, Lucy Meza Jan 2026

Eurovision As A Platform For Cultural Diplomacy In Times Of Conflict, Lucy Meza

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis examines how states utilize the Eurovision Song Contest as a platform for soft power, focusing on the conditions under which cultural performance translates into reputational gains. Drawing on Joseph Nye’s concept of soft power, Biasioli’s theory of songwashing, Zamorano’s typology of cultural diplomacy, Anholt’s competitive identity framework, and Feklyunina’s analysis of identity and narrative, it argues that Eurovision’s effectiveness as a soft power platform is fundamentally contingent on the alignment between a state’s cultural narrative and dominant international perceptions of its legitimacy. Through a qualitative comparative case study approach, the thesis examines two nations whose Eurovision participation during …

Collective Labour Dispute Resolution In Vietnam: The Evolution Of Rules And Institutions And Workers’ Strategic Deployment Of State Regulation, Trang T.K. Tran Jan 2026

Collective Labour Dispute Resolution In Vietnam: The Evolution Of Rules And Institutions And Workers’ Strategic Deployment Of State Regulation, Trang T.K. Tran

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

While Vietnam has established a legal system for labour disputes that largely mirrors those in developed countries, empirical evidence reveals these formal mechanisms are rarely, if ever, used to resolve collective disputes. The persistent failures of the formal mechanisms have, paradoxically, created an environment where workers and trade unions have developed innovative, informal strategies to leverage the state’s legal framework. Workers in Vietnam mobilize around the very existence of labour laws to exert pressure on employers and state institutions to intervene on their behalf, even if not directly following each labour laws’ procedure. This strategic deployment of state regulation, often …

Transnational Labour Law And Governance: Advancing Workers’ Rights In Global Value Chains, Judy Fudge, Guy Mundlak Jan 2026

Transnational Labour Law And Governance: Advancing Workers’ Rights In Global Value Chains, Judy Fudge, Guy Mundlak

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

TRANSNATIONAL LABOUR GOVERNANCE is a multiscalar assemblage of agents, institutions, instruments, and legal concepts that has emerged to address the governance gap caused by the mismatch between the global nature of production and the territorial format of labour law (Blackett & Trebilcock, 2015; Hepple, 2005; Kolben, 2011; Mundlak, 2024). This special issue investigates some of the key components in this assemblage and identifies features that make a transnational labour law approach distinctive. In this introduction to the special issue, we begin in Section II by describing the governance gap and its impact on the wages and working conditions of supply …

The Problem Of Digital Trade Regulation: Silences Regarding Labour And Their Potential Disruption By A Sustainability Agenda, Tonia Novitz Jan 2026

The Problem Of Digital Trade Regulation: Silences Regarding Labour And Their Potential Disruption By A Sustainability Agenda, Tonia Novitz

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

The growing impact of digital trade on work in global supply chains is readily detectable but there are curious regulatory silences on labour-related issues. The key problem identified in digital trade law is national obstruction to the free flow of data needed to promote online ordering and delivery of goods and services. In comparison, the concerns of those whose work is constitutive of digital trade, such as platform workers, are largely overlooked. Arguably, provisions often found in trade agreements relating to digital privacy and the effects of algorithmic management could be utilised by those at work. However, there remain uncertainties …

An Exploration Of Knowledge-Sharing Behaviour Within A Community-Based Service Provider: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Paul Mcmanus Jan 2026

An Exploration Of Knowledge-Sharing Behaviour Within A Community-Based Service Provider: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis, Paul Mcmanus

Doctoral

This qualitative research examines the knowledge-sharing (KS) behaviour of employees within a non-profit organisation (NPO) based in Dublin, Ireland. This NPO is a community-based service provider that supports people with disabilities and their families. It operates under the aegis of the Health Service Executive (HSE). The ability of employees to share knowledge is fundamental to the sustained care of society’s most vulnerable. Research on employees’ KS behaviour remains underrepresented within the non-profit sector. This gap in knowledge aligns with the NPO’s view that its KS environment requires improvement. In response to the literature review, a developed taxonomy conceptualises the organisation …

Supply Chain Bargaining And Worker Voice: Reflections On The Bangladesh Accord And The Dindigul Agreement, Marlese Von Broembsen Jan 2026

Supply Chain Bargaining And Worker Voice: Reflections On The Bangladesh Accord And The Dindigul Agreement, Marlese Von Broembsen

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

Both private governance and transnational labour law scholars are concerned with the participation of supply chain workers in “enforceable brand agreements.” Much of the private governance literature is concerned with improving workers’ participation in the negotiation and implementation of enforceable brand agreements. Some transnational labour law scholars are concerned with whether transnational labour law should depart from prescripts typical of national labour law — which generally recognises trade unions as the only legitimate representatives of workers — to recognise civil society organisations as bargaining agents. This article analyses the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Building Safety and the Dindigul Agreement …

Corporatism For The Informal Economy: Democratising The Potential Of The Mathadi Tripartite Board Model, Shelley Marshall, Hila Shamir, Babu P. Remesh, Anjali Sharma Jan 2026

Corporatism For The Informal Economy: Democratising The Potential Of The Mathadi Tripartite Board Model, Shelley Marshall, Hila Shamir, Babu P. Remesh, Anjali Sharma

Comparative Labor Law & Policy Journal

This article examines the Mathadi Boards in Pune, India, as a pioneering example of corporatist regulation adapted to the informal economy. These tripartite institutions — comprising workers, employers, and the state — negotiate legally binding agreements on wages and working conditions for informal labourers, offering social protections and formalization without relying on traditional employment contracts. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and interviews, the study explores the Boards’ structure, governance, and impact, highlighting their potential as scalable models for informal labour regulation globally. It also identifies challenges related to representation, enforcement, and social exclusion, offering insights into how corporatist frameworks can be …

The Role Of Silence In Symbolic Management, W. Chad Carlos, Ben W. Lewis Jan 2026

The Role Of Silence In Symbolic Management, W. Chad Carlos, Ben W. Lewis

Faculty Publications

Symbolic management research examines how organizations shape external evaluations by making symbolic claims. A central concept in this literature is decoupling, which distinguishes symbolic claims from their substantive implementation. This work is grounded in the assumption that symbolic visibility is generally beneficial, leading organizations to make symbolic claims regardless of practice. Yet a growing set of cases challenge this assumption by documenting an inverse pattern in which organizations substantively implement practices while remaining symbolically silent. This absence of symbolic claims runs counter to prevailing theoretical expectations regarding the reputational value of symbolic action. In this paper, we address this theoretical …

Gambling Away Stability: Sports Betting’S Impact On Vulnerable H, Scott R. Baker, Justin Balthrop, Mark J. Johnson, Jason Kotter, Kevin Pisciotta Jan 2026

Gambling Away Stability: Sports Betting’S Impact On Vulnerable H, Scott R. Baker, Justin Balthrop, Mark J. Johnson, Jason Kotter, Kevin Pisciotta

Faculty Publications

We estimate the causal effect of online sports betting on households’ investment, spending, and debt management decisions using household transaction data and a staggered difference-in-differences framework. Following legalization, sports betting spreads quickly, with both the number of participants and frequency of bets increasing over time. This increase does not displace other gambling or consumption but significantly reduces savings, as risky bets crowd out positive expected value investments. These effects concentrate among frequent bettors and low-savings households. Our findings highlight the potential adverse effects of online sports betting on vulnerable households.

Leadership Training Outcomes In Predoctoral Dental Education: A Narrative Review, Ayato Shigihara Ba, D4, Beatriz Bezerra Dds, Phd, Facd, Ficd, Shelia Yaghmai Dds, Mph, Facd, Marc Hayashi Dmd, Mba, Facd, Ficd, Fpfa

Journal of the American College of Dentists

Dentists are increasingly expected to serve as leaders within clinical teams, healthcare systems, organized dentistry, and their communities. Despite this expectation, leadership training remains inconsistent in predoctoral dental education. National data suggest that only 24% of practicing dentists feel adequately prepared for leadership roles in practice through their dental education, with even fewer reporting preparedness at broader organizational or systemic levels. Although CODA Standards 2-19 and 2-20 require demonstrated leadership competency, implementation across dental schools remains highly variable. A narrative literature review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, and institutional reports to identify implemented leadership education initiatives in US dental …

The Ethics Of Dental Insurance Submission And Adjudication, Robert Rosenthal Dds Jan 2026

The Ethics Of Dental Insurance Submission And Adjudication, Robert Rosenthal Dds

Journal of the American College of Dentists

Dental insurance claims sit at the intersection of professional ethics, contract administration, and regulatory oversight. This article argues that claim submission and payer adjudication should be treated as ethical practices grounded in truthfulness, fair use of shared resources, and respect for patient autonomy. Common failure modes range from misunderstandings of benefit provisions to intentional misrepresentations of diagnosis, procedure coding, dates of service, or supporting narratives. Because payer communications and attachments become part of the claim file, inaccuracies may create downstream harm, including patient financial confusion, audit exposure, recoupment, network consequences, and professional discipline. This article offers practical guidance to help …

Crisis Communication In The Influencer Era: A Crisis Response Analysis Of Poppi And Alani Nu, Meredith E. Staley Jan 2026

Crisis Communication In The Influencer Era: A Crisis Response Analysis Of Poppi And Alani Nu, Meredith E. Staley

Honors College Theses

As social media continues to reshape modern public relations practice, beverage brands like Alani Nu and Poppi offer relevant examples of influencer-driven communication and crisis response. This honors thesis compares and contrasts these brands following two major crises: Poppi’s influencer vending machine campaign and the health concerns and backlash surrounding Alani Nu’s energy drinks. Despite the well-known prevalence of these brands, there is little scholarly research examining their crisis communication strategies. Guided by Situational Crisis Communication Theory, this study uses a combination of social and news media content analysis to evaluate how each brand responded to its respective crisis. Each …

Artificial Intelligence And Consumer Well-Being: A Cross Domain Systemic Review, Setar Lytle, Mahesh Gopinath

Marketing Faculty Publications

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly embedded in everyday consumption, yet evidence on its longer-term implications for consumer eudaimonic well-being remains dispersed across disciplines and application contexts. This review integrates that literature to clarify the domains, theoretical explanations, and conditions through which AI shapes consumer well-being. Following PRISMA and SPAR-4-SLR procedures, we reviewed research published from January 2010 to January 2026. From 6058 records, 480 studies across psychology, business, and human-technology interaction met the inclusion criteria. The evidence is organised through psychological, social, and technological perspectives and identifies six interconnected domains: mental health, cognitive development, physical health, personal growth, autonomy and …

Beauty Isn't Always Better: How Salesperson Attractiveness Affects Consumers' Approach Behaviors, Veronica L. Thomas, Stephanie M. Mangus, Dora E. Bock Jan 2026

Beauty Isn't Always Better: How Salesperson Attractiveness Affects Consumers' Approach Behaviors, Veronica L. Thomas, Stephanie M. Mangus, Dora E. Bock

Marketing Faculty Publications

This research examines how a consumer's committed romantic relationship influences their decision to approach an attractive salesperson in a retail environment. To date, the majority of research espouses the benefits of salesperson attractiveness in enhancing consumers' perceptions of the salesperson and the represented retailer. This is problematic because it creates a managerial bias toward attractive salespeople and, as we propose, provides an incomplete view of the effect of salesperson attractiveness on consumers' behavior. Drawing on the interpersonal relationship literature on commitment, we propose that consumers in committed relationships activate relationship-maintenance motives that override the beauty bias when a salesperson's attractiveness …

Ideational Behavior And Occupational Identity Achievement: A Study Of Emerging Adult College Students Preceding Entry Into The Fouth Industrial Revolution Workforce, Carrington M. Faulk, Michael F. Kosloski, Philip Reed Jan 2026

Ideational Behavior And Occupational Identity Achievement: A Study Of Emerging Adult College Students Preceding Entry Into The Fouth Industrial Revolution Workforce, Carrington M. Faulk, Michael F. Kosloski, Philip Reed

Marketing Faculty Publications

As emerging adults transition into the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) workforce, it is essential to understand the factors that predict successful occupational identity achievement, as automation will impact human occupational identity crises. This descriptive cross-sectional study employed a correlational design to determine the degree to which ideational behavior predicts occupational identity achievement prior to entry into the 4IR workforce. Using a sample of 166 emerging adult college students from a Mid-Atlantic, diverse, four-year university, data were collected using Runco's Ideational Behavior Scale (RIBS) and Melgosa's Occupational Identity Achievement subscale (OIA). Results showed that ideational behavior significantly predicted occupational identity achievement …
