Pesticide Regulation And The Farm Worker, R. Craig Loveless Apr 1975

Pesticide Regulation And The Farm Worker, R. Craig Loveless

IUSTITIA

It has long been recognized that many pesticide products offer a potential hazard, which if unregulated, may result in injury or death. The development of highly toxic pesticides during the last decade has created a need for stricter regulation of pesticide use in the agricultural community. Specifically, the farm worker of today is in need of legislative protection from exposure to deadly chemical agents now being used to control pests and disease in the fields and orchards. Regulating the handling and use of these dangerous pesticides is but one way to protect the farmer, the farm worker, and the environment. …

A Rate/Cost Analysis Of Nebraska Meat Trucking Activities With Livestock Trucking Cost Comparisons, Dale G. Anderson, Wayne W. Budt Mar 1975

A Rate/Cost Analysis Of Nebraska Meat Trucking Activities With Livestock Trucking Cost Comparisons, Dale G. Anderson, Wayne W. Budt

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

This study was designed to measure costs of long-distance shipment of meat by motor carrier. Costs were compared with published rates for meat shipments by truck, rail and trailer-on-flatcar (TOFC). Finally, meat trucking costs were compared with costs of trucking meat-equivalent amounts of livestock. Results of the study provide a partial basis for evaluating the economic merits of expanded livestock production activities in grain-surplus Great Plains locations. Such an expansion might aid in the economic development of the region and ease the chronic problem of rail freight-car supply. Proposals ranging from extension of present regulation to cover livestock trucking to …

It Is Up To Us: Arnold J. Toynbee, Vahe Baladouni

Accounting Historians Journal

Professor Arnold J. Toynbee, one of the most outstanding intellectual figures of our time, died in October at the age of eighty-six. His vast erudition, accompanied with astonishing industry and magnificent style, made him a prolific writer on numerous and disparate subjects--ranging from works on the Armenian genocide of 1915 to his well-known twelve-volume work, A Study of History. Alongside his scholarly achievements, Toynbee worked for his government during both World Wars and was a member of the British delegation to the Paris peace conferences in 1919 and 1945.

Social Stress And Welfare Problems In Agricultural Animals, D. G. M. Wood-Gush, I. J. H. Duncan, D. Fraser Jan 1975

Social Stress And Welfare Problems In Agricultural Animals, D. G. M. Wood-Gush, I. J. H. Duncan, D. Fraser

Farm Animal Welfare Collection

Disruptions of an animal's social behaviour can, in some respects at least, mimic the effects of such classical stressors as infection and exposure to low temperatures. For example, Barnett (1958) found enlarged adrenals among wild rats which were subjected to attack by other rats in the laboratory. However, the experience of being attacked was not necessary for this physiological response, as the aggressors showed much the same changes as the victims. In fact Archer (1969) reported heightened adrenocortical activity among individually caged mice simply as a result of their being housed next to other mice, without actual physical contact. If …

A Market Analysis For The Cleveland Zoological Park, Hamilton Emmons, Burton V. Dean, Thomas S. Nunnikhoven, D.R. Rossiter, Raghavendra N. Rao, Cornelis A. De Kluyver, B. Richmond

Research Reports from the Department of Operations

The Cleveland Zoological Park has experienced, over the past decade, a general trend toward increasing deficits and decreasing attendance (see Appendix A). The Zoo is a nonprofit organization, rendering services to the community in such areas as education, conservation, community enhancement, and cultural enrichment. Through the Metropolitan Park Board, it receives an annual subsidy of $300,000. In spite of this subsidy and a significant increase in donated funds, coupled with repeated admission and parking fee increases, even the most frugal management has been unable to make income meet expenses. Certainly, nothing has been left over for capital investments in new …

Economies Of Size, Volume And Diversification In Retail Grain And Farm Supply Businesses, D. G. Anderson, D. L. Helgeson

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

This study revealed substantial cost savings could accrue to grain and farm supply businesses from plants of larger size. Given sufficient competitive pressures, farmers and consumers might benefit as well from these savings. A continuation of the present trend toward larger, more diverse firms seems likely. Existing firms of sub-optimum size and product structures will probably remain in operation until they are depreciated out. Relatively modest savings from diversified structures make any rapid trend toward one-stop centers unlikely.

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

in this issue. . .

THIS APRIL 1974 issue of THE MIDWEST QUARTERLY testifies to our continued interest in a wide range of topics having in common a meaningful relation to contemporary thought. One and all, our authors speak in a contemporary voice and to contemporary concerns, whether they demythicize the Southern "aristocrat," discuss the politics of modem Austria or of our own country, argue for the preeminence of contemporary black poet Robert Hayden, spring to the defense of Hamlin Hill's iconoclastic study of a national literary idol, or in a manner reminiscent of the Geneva "Critics of Consciousness," define …
