Agenda: Western Water Law In Transition, University Of Colorado Boulder. Natural Resources Law Center

Western Water Law in Transition (Summer Conference, June 3-5)

Conference organizers and/or faculty included University of Colorado School of Law professors James N. Corbridge, Jr., Lawrence J. MacDonnell, Richard B. Collins, David H. Getches and Charles F. Wilkinson.

The prior appropriation doctrine has governed the allocation and use of water in the western United States since the 1850s. The shifting nature of water demand is bringing about changes in the traditional legal system. This conference will consider the fundamental principles of the prior appropriation doctrine together with the important new developments in the law now underway throughout the West.

The Animal Slave Trade: Brutality On The Road To Research

Close Up Reports

The HSUS is working on several fronts to stop the exploitation of our nation's pets. In January, we were instrumental in establishing a coalition to abolish pound seizure-the practice of relinquishing pound and shelter animals for research purposes. Consisting of 11 of the country's leading animal welfare organizations, The National Coalition to Protect Our Pets will be working with local groups to outlaw pound seizure on a state-by-state basis. HSUS investigators will continue to trace the road to research, and we'll be taking legal action against both dealers and research centers whenever necessary. In our effort tore- r duce the …

Case Study Of Installing A Research Project Cost Accounting System, Marjorie Rolfsmeyer

Theses

The thesis, Case Study of Installing a Research Project Cost Accounting System by Marjorie Rolfsmeyer, explores the development and implementation of a computerized cost accounting system for research and development (R&D) projects within the Health Care Division of a major corporation. The author identifies the unique challenges of research cost accounting, which differs from traditional manufacturing cost systems due to its unpredictable nature and project-specific expenditures.

The study outlines the purpose of a project cost accounting system, emphasizing its role in budgeting, financial tracking, and managerial decision-making. It discusses how cost control mechanisms, including detailed expense reporting, job numbering, and …

Documentation Of Whole-Farm Model For The Eastern Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Ross S. Kingwell, David J. Pannell, David. A. Morrison Mar 1985

Documentation Of Whole-Farm Model For The Eastern Wheatbelt Of Western Australia, Ross S. Kingwell, David J. Pannell, David. A. Morrison

Grain and other field crops published reports

The Eastern Wheatbelt Model (EwM) is a hypothetical farm model, intended to be representative of farms in the eastern wheatbelt region. It is a model of an 'average' farm in an 'average' season. Nevertheless it is possible to substitute the resource mix of a 'real' farm for the •average' and to substitute various types of season for the 'average'.

Assumptions of 'average' farm resources and •average' season are based on opinions by WADA researchers and advisers. For the EWM, researchers and advisers at Merredin prescribed average resources for an eastern wheatbelt farm receiving a 300 mm average rainfall including 210 …

Cruel Cosmetic Testing Could Be Stopped Today If Consumers Demanded It! Feb 1985

Cruel Cosmetic Testing Could Be Stopped Today If Consumers Demanded It!

Close Up Reports

The HSUS is launching an all-out offensive to bring an end to the terror and torture endured by millions of animals used in product-safety tests for cosmetics. In recent years, pressure from the animal-welfare community has prompted cosmetic companies to begin developing more humane methods of testing their products. Despite what appears to be progress, findings of a new HSUS study indicate that non-animal alternatives for testing cosmetics may never be implemented on an industry-wide basis unless consumers take action now.

Keeping Up With Technological Change, Karlis V. Kopans Jan 1985

Keeping Up With Technological Change, Karlis V. Kopans

Theses

Advances in technology over the past fifty (50) years have changed virtually everything that touches our lives today to some degree. However, in the last five years or so, these innovations have been combined into products and systems which have visibly begun to change society as we have known it in the past.

Only in recent years, have the affects of technological change or innovation on society begun to be examined. While a fair amount of literature has been published to date on specific areas of technological change, few publications have been produced which provide a general overview of the …

Conceptual Program For Development Of A Biblically Themed Recreation Attraction In Arbuckle Mountains, Oklahoma, Harrison Price Company

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

Jerry Hagee and his associates (members of his family) had long had a deep seated ambition to build a biblically themed park that would become a landmark destination for the tourist visitor in general and the millions of evangelical Christians in the country, particularly in the South. The family operated a successful, free enclosure, safari type zoo attraction and visitor center at its park in the Arbuckle Mountains on Interstate Highway 35, midway between Oklahoma City and Dallas/Fort Worth. This site was large and expandable and considered as the primary location for the contemplated project. The proposed project was a …

The Demographic Transition And Population Policy In Egypt: An Integrated Methodology At The Household Level, Allen C. Kelley, Robert M. Schmidt Jan 1985

The Demographic Transition And Population Policy In Egypt: An Integrated Methodology At The Household Level, Allen C. Kelley, Robert M. Schmidt

Robins School of Business White Paper Series, 1980-2022

This paper examines household-level fertility research within the broader contexts of the demographic transition and public policy. The framework chosen for this examination is the Easterlin/Crimmins (1982, 1985) model which we modify and apply to a sample of rural Egyptian households. The remainder of this section describes the value of that model in analyzing the demographic transition and in formulating public policy. Section 2 provides a summary of the theory, 3 a critical discussion of the empirical model and its application to rural Egypt, and 4 the results.

Accounting In Ancient Times, Ernest Stevelinck Jan 1985

Accounting In Ancient Times, Ernest Stevelinck

Accounting Historians Journal

Studies by French scholars of ancient Egyptian and Babylonian records purport to describe accounting methods in use over two thousand years ago. The number of documents translated and analyzed is too small to justify such generalizations. The interpretations of the records is doubtful, due to the very different economic environment in which they were created. In any case, there is little of interest to the present-day accountant in the study of primitive and obsolete accounting practices.

Accounting On The Old Plantation: A Study Of The Financial Records Of An Ante-Bellum Louisiana Sugar Planter, Joseph R. Razek Jan 1985

Accounting On The Old Plantation: A Study Of The Financial Records Of An Ante-Bellum Louisiana Sugar Planter, Joseph R. Razek

Accounting Historians Journal

Very little information exists on the accounting methods and procedures of the great cotton and sugar plantations in the Southeastern United States during the period preceding the Civil War. Fortunately, one sugar planter, William J. Minor of Natchez, Mississippi and Houma, Louisiana, maintained a detailed set of records, among which are two ledgers. From these we learn that a hybrid accounting system, using elements of cash and accrual and single and double-entry bookkeeping, was in use. While such a system might seem strange today, it appears to have served its purpose in its particular operating environment.

The Attainment Of Humane Housing For Farm Livestock, D.G.M. Wood-Gush Jan 1985

The Attainment Of Humane Housing For Farm Livestock, D.G.M. Wood-Gush

Agribusiness Collection

In discussing animal welfare it is very easy for the discussion to become bogged down by misunderstandings. Commonly the first misunderstanding arises over the definition of animal welfare. In the content of this article we will take it for granted that any definition includes the physical well-being of the animal as well as ensuring that the animal can fulfill much of its genetically controlled behavioral repertoire. The second misunderstanding arises when the political and scientific assessments of the subject are meshed together. In a scientific assessment, the aim should be to examine welfare problems strictly from what we know about …

Cardiac Arrest Stunning Of Livestock And Poultry, Temple Grandin Jan 1985

Cardiac Arrest Stunning Of Livestock And Poultry, Temple Grandin

Agribusiness Collection

A stunning method that will reliably render an animal insensible to pain and sensation prior to hoisting and bleeding is essential to prevent suffering. Cardiac arrest stunning is more effective than conventional electric stunning. In cardiac arrest stunning, an electric current is passed through both the brain and the heart to produce permanent insensibility. Since the animal is killed by the electricity it cannot revive during hoisting, bleeding, or slaughtering procedures. In contrast, conventional electrical stunning induces reversible insensibility for a short period of time.
