Shaq: The Latest Impact Player, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

They are called impact players. The kind of player who can come into a league and make an immediate impact on a team, and even on a league. They are few and far between. The Orlando Magic has one. At 7'1" and around 300 pounds he is what Al McGuire termed an aircraft carrier, and Dick Vitale calls a space eater. Either description will do. He is Shaquille O'Neal. The Shaq.

Sow Preference For Farrowing-Crate Width, P. A. Phillips, David Fraser, B. K. Thompson Dec 1992

Sow Preference For Farrowing-Crate Width, P. A. Phillips, David Fraser, B. K. Thompson

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

A preference-testing apparatus was designed to provide sows with continuous access to three farrowing crates of different widths. The crates radiated from a central hub area sufficiently large for sows to enter or leave any crate freely. In exp. 1, nine sows were offered crates of 450-, 600- and 750-mm width at standing height. In exp. 2, 12 sows were offered widths of 450, 750 and 1200 mm, the largest being of sufficient width for the sow to turn around. Video recording was used to determine sow position from 3 d before to 6 d after farrowing. In exp. 1, …

The Role Of Banks In Promoting The Growth Of Corporate Financing In Nigeria., K. M. Obitayo

Bullion

Capital formation whether financed from internal or external sources, requires the mobilization of economic surpluses. For investment to increase, there must be a growing surplus over and above current consumption that can be channelled into productive uses. The different ways of accumulating capital entail different institutional arrangements. The objective of this paper is to discuss the role of banks in promoting the growth of corporate financing in Nigeria. The rest of the paper is structured into three major parts. Part 1 outlines the evolution of the Nigerian banking system. Part II examines the role of banks in fostering the growth …

Integrated Diagnostic Expert System Model (Idesm): A Model For The Conversion Of Fault Isolation Procedures Into An Integrated Diagnostic Expert System, Robert J. Lacey, Glen D. Steemson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop a model to convert existing hardcopy maintenance manual fault isolation procedures into electronic format and to partially automate the fault isolation process. A comprehensive model was developed which comprised four major components: user interface, expert system submodel, hypermedia submodel, and a submodel integration shell. Using this model, the F 15E nose landing gear fault isolation procedures were transformed into a rule based expert system. An existing hypermedia information base was expanded and subsequently integrated with the expert system to form the prototype application. The prototype was evaluated by engineering and maintenance personnel …

In Search Of Ancient Auditors, Harold C. Smolinski, Delbert William Chumley, Donald E. Bennett

Accounting Historians Notebook

Auditing is one of the most ancient of all professions. Early civilizations apparently learned to audit almost as soon as they learned to write. Many of the oldest examples of writing are records of possessions, such as livestock, grain, or wine. There is evidence that at least some of these first accounting records were audited. We will examine evidence of auditing in the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Our examination will be limited to the lands located around the Mediterranean Sea for it is here that the origin of auditing in Western world can be found. We …

An Analysis Of Joint Ventures Between The United States And The Commonwealth Of Independent States, Brian P. Davis, Daniel L. Demott

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop insights for those who wish to engage in joint ventures with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Most Western countries are seeking to take advantage of the natural resources and untapped consumer market in the CIS. Consequently, companies wanting to engage in commercial endeavors will need current information on the different financial, cultural, organizational, and logistical issues that are peculiar to the CIS. This …

The city of Buffalo, New York is situated at the heart of the nation's largest tract of undeveloped urban waterfront, some 90 miles of shoreline, extending along Lake Erie, the Niagara River, and the Buffalo River in Erie County. This invaluable natural resource, much of which had been abandoned for several decades and virtually cut off from public access and enjoyment for more than 160 years, had become the focus of a comprehensive planning program designed to restore its deserved prominence in the economic and recreational life of the city. Charged with implementing waterfront rejuvenation is Horizons Waterfront Commission, established …

Estimating The Effectiveness Of Extension Information Systems Using Farm Trical And Subjective Probabilities, Wayne H. Howard, Robert W. Blake, Thomas O. Knight, Richard C. Shumway, Michael A. Tomaszewski Jun 1992

Estimating The Effectiveness Of Extension Information Systems Using Farm Trical And Subjective Probabilities, Wayne H. Howard, Robert W. Blake, Thomas O. Knight, Richard C. Shumway, Michael A. Tomaszewski

Agribusiness

A method of combining survey data and Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) records to achieve low cost farm trials is presented. Farm trials and surveys of current practices and production responses are useful to identify yield gaps between expectations predicted from experimental findings and actual field results. Different management schemes can be ranked using subjective probabilities and stochastic dominance to enhance successful implementation of research findings and to increase the feedback between researchers, extension workers, and producers. A survey of current masitis control practices and expected milk yield response is the example. Combining survey results with DHIA records allowed estimating …

Packer Integration Into Hog Production: Current Status And Likely Impacts Of Increased Vertical Control On Hog Prices And Quantities, Azzeddine M. Azzam, Allen C. Wellman

Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station: Historical Research Bulletins

In a survey conducted three years ago by the staff of Pork '88, it was found that some of the major players in the pork industry, like Smithfield foods, for example, have either integrated into hog production or have all the requirements for vertical integration in place. The move toward internalizing the exchange process in the hog/pork sector through vertical integration has raised several questions ranging from its impact on prices and quantities to its impact on individual hog producers. This report is a first step toward studying these issues. Its specific objectives are a) to provide some insights into …
