Displaying Group Cohesiveness: Humour And Laughter In The Public Lectures Of Management Gurus, David Greatbatch, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As perhaps the highest profile group of management speakers in the world, so-called management gurus use their appearances on the international management lecture circuit todisseminate their ideas and to build their personal reputations with audiences of managers. This article examines the use of humour by management gurus during these public performances. Focusing on video recordings of lectures conducted by four leading management gurus (Tom Peters, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, Peter Senge and Gary Hamel), the article explicates the verbal and nonverbal practices that the gurus use when they evoke audience laughter. The Effect Of Web Interface Features On Consumer Online Shopping Intentions, Jeffrey Sam Siekpe Dec 2003

The Effect Of Web Interface Features On Consumer Online Shopping Intentions, Jeffrey Sam Siekpe

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Amid the storm of hype over Internet adoption, it is observed that during the past years, organizations have taken considerable interest in eagerly acquiring computer hardware and software to implement electronic commerce (e-commerce) applications mostly to the detriment of human aspects of the information technology (IT) solutions (Freemantle, 2002; Lockwood & Lamp, 2000). Various Internet technologies, mostly the Web, have been implemented to offer online goods and services. Many credible estimates suggest that Internet buying and selling will account for close to $2 trillion of annual economic activity by 2004 (Citrin et al., 2003; Fry, 2000). While the promise of …

The Problem Of Unwanted Pets: A Case Study In How Institutions “Think” About Clients’ Needs, Leslie Irvine Nov 2003

The Problem Of Unwanted Pets: A Case Study In How Institutions “Think” About Clients’ Needs, Leslie Irvine

Pets Collection

The research on organizational framing and the metaphor of institutional “thinking” highlight the ways that social problems organizations shape the ameliorative services they deliver. Social problems work then perpetuates representations of problems that may not match the conditions clients face. This study extends social problems literature to argue that organizations sometimes “think” differently about the problems they intend to solve than do persons involved with these problems in everyday life. Using ethnographic research and interviews, this article contrasts the way in which animal sheltering, as an institution, frames the problem of unwanted animals with how the public interprets that problem. …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 6 - Assessment Of The Nutritional Variability Of Lupins As An Aquaculture Feed Ingredient, Brett Glencross, John Curnow, Wayne Hawkins

Fisheries Research Reports

The nutritional value of the kernel meals of three species of lupin (Lupinus albus, L. angustifolius and L. luteus) was compared against each other and a reference ingredient of solvent extracted soybean meal, when fed to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Each lupin kernel meal was included in test diets at 300 g/kg and also at a greater level, representing 50% of the total protein content in the diet. The digestibility of protein of all lupin kernel meals was better than for the soybean meal. The highest protein digestibility was that from L. luteus kernel meal at 30% inclusion (100%), which …

Partnerships Of Nonprofit Organizations And Business For The Development Of Community Social Welfare Activities: The American Experience, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Partnerships between traditionally non-profit social services (the theme of the conference), funded by various donative arrangements and subsidized by government contracts, and any type of commercial business ventures are still relative rare in the mainstream of U.S. social work today. We can identify three distinct positions on the question among scholars in the U.S. today: A general management perspective found in business schools, a public affairs perspective found in schools of public administration, and two perspectives among social workers. The vast majority of those social work have undoubtedly never heard of this issue. Yet, a very small portion of social …

Feminine Context Of Prehistoric Notation Systems, David Oldroyd Oct 2003

Feminine Context Of Prehistoric Notation Systems, David Oldroyd

Accounting Historians Notebook

A radical school of modern feminism exists which believes in the existence of a time in prehistory, before the male take-over, when society was universally matriarchal, and women enjoyed a more central role in society than men. The idea of an ancient matriarchy first gained ground in the 19th century amongst evolutionary theorists, such as Engels. He linked the oppression of women to the rise of the state, which he said had resulted in the separation of private and public domains, the activities of women being relegated to the private service of their husbands (Leacock, 1978, p. 255; Siverblatt, 1991, …

Business Faculty Opinions Of Teaching Methods And Resources, Gundars Kaupins, Malcolm Coco Oct 2003

Business Faculty Opinions Of Teaching Methods And Resources, Gundars Kaupins, Malcolm Coco

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

About two hundred and eighty business professors compared seventeen teaching methods and resources based on four objectives. Interactive, hands-on teaching methods such as internships were rated first and less interactive teaching resources such as radio were rated last. Web courses that included more interaction such as chats were rated higher than Web courses with audio, typed lectures, and videos. However, all four types of Web courses investigated were rated in the bottom half of the teaching methods and resources. Results correspond to major principles of andragogy theory.

Organizational Preparation For Terrorist Attack, Alan Wallace, Vernon Harper

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

In the event of a terrorist attack causing mass casualties or nuclear, biological, or chemical contamination, emergency responders easily can be overwhelmed by demands for their services. Advance planning by organizations with the advice of emergency responders to safeguard people from becoming victims, to care for victims before emergency responders arrive, and to render assistance to emergency responders once they arrive is critical to mitigating damage.

Integrating Network Attached Mass Storage Systems Into Educational Networks: An Initial Examination Of Performance And Security Issues, Dennis Guster, James E. Weber, Charles Hall

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

As colleges and universities digitalize record storage, classroom support and administrative processes, data storage needs are increasing dramatically. Institutions of higher education are turning to mass storage systems to fill these needs. NAS (network attachedstorage) is often selected over alternatives for cost, scalability and ease of administration reasons. This paper reports the results of an initial study assessing security concerns, performance characteristics, ease of installation, configuration, upgradeability, and use by end users, in an academic installation of network attached storage.

Direct Marketing Of Agroforestry Products, Stefanie Aschmann Sep 2003

Direct Marketing Of Agroforestry Products, Stefanie Aschmann

Agroforestry Notes (USDA-NAC)

Agroforestry can enhance cash flow on many farms through the production of high-value forest products. The greatest challenge, however, is often marketing rather than production. Unlike commodity crops that have a readily available, but relatively uncompromising, market; the market for some agroforestry products is not always apparent. Landowners may need to take an active role in marketing to reap the benefits of their production. Producer goals, resources, and products, as well as local customer needs and habits usually dictate marketing strategies. This Note describes several different direct marketing strategies that might be used to market agroforestry products. Many variations on …

Interpreting Bids From A Vickrey Auction When There Are Public Good Attributes, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein

Agribusiness

This paper provides a model that allows for interpreting bids in a Vickrey auction when the good has public good attributes. It also examines information obtained from a Vickrey auction, which collected consumer’s willingness-to-pay for pork products that had embedded environmental attributes, and applies the new interpretation to the bids.

A Tale Of Two Premiums—Examining Bids From A Multiple Round Vickrey Auction With Differing Information Sets, Sean P. Hurley, James B. Kliebenstein

Agribusiness

Two definitions of willingness-to-pay derived from a Vickrey auction with multi-product and multiple rounds with different information sets are examined. These definitions are examined in the context of valuing pork products with embedded environmental attributes and we show how information can have adverse effects on a base product of comparison.

Dairy Policy And Price Volatility, Charles F. Nicholson, Thomas Fiddaman Jul 2003

Dairy Policy And Price Volatility, Charles F. Nicholson, Thomas Fiddaman

Agribusiness

The US dairy industry is shaped by a patchwork of regulations accumulated over a long history of intervention to achieve various, sometimes conflicting, policy goals. Price supports have long been a central feature of dairy markets, but were largely withdrawn beginning in 1988. Since that time, there has been a dramatic increase in the variability of farm milk and milk product prices. The origins and desirability of volatility has been the subject of much debate; unfortunately models in existence to date have shed little light on the question due to their adoption of essentially non-dynamic methods. This article introduces a …

Model State Land Use Legislation For New England, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service Jul 2003

Model State Land Use Legislation For New England, New England Environmental Finance Center, Muskie School Of Public Service

Legislation

Sprawl is neither the ordained nor the inevitable outcome upon the New England landscape. A coordinated response to sprawl by the public and private sectors is possible, and could dramatically improve land use patterns and reduce the cost of local government. For the New England states, such a response would include, among other elements, legislation to eliminate existing gaps in the land use laws of each state – gaps that presently encourage or sanction sprawling development. It would also include incentives for municipalities to think beyond their borders and to act with greater efficiency and effect. It is the purpose …
