The Long Haul: Risks Associated With Livestock Transport, Michael Greger
The Long Haul: Risks Associated With Livestock Transport, Michael Greger
Agribusiness Collection
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations describes live animal transport as “ideally suited for spreading disease,” given that animals may originate from different herds or flocks and are “confined together for long periods in a poorly ventilated stressful environment.” Given the associated “serious animal and public health problems,” the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe has called for the replacement of the long-distance transportation of live animals for slaughter as much as possible to a “carcass-only trade.”
In the United States, more than 50 million live cattle, sheep, and pigs and an unknown number of the more …
Technology And Social Anxieties, Attitudes And Behavioral Intentions Of Singaporeans Towards Using Self-Service Technology (Sst), Mukesh Kumar
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The interactions between customers and service organizations, known as service encounters, have generally been between front-liner and consumers. Gradually however, these encounters are changing with the introduction of self-service facilities that are quickly replacing service staff. The use of self-service technology has seen an incredible amount of growth globally over the last few years. Self-service technologies are currently being used in more diverse ways for new services than once thought possible. The expenditure on self-service kiosks is expected to rise by 88% and the dollar value of transactions taking place through self-service technology should exceed 1.3 trillion by 2007 (Avery, …

The Muslim world population survey conducted in 2005 found that Islam is the fastest growing religion on earth, both through birth and adoption. There were 2 billion Muslims scatted around 148 countries and the figures are rising each day. It is estimated that by 2010, the Muslim population will exceed 3 billion (Evans, 2005). The recorded growth rate for Muslim population is as follows: the Europe Muslim population of around 25 million increased at a rate of 140% over the past 10 years, America’s by 25%, Australia’s by 250% and Asia’s increased by 12% over the same period. The healthy …
Discovery: An Incremental Revolution, Rebecca Minnillo
Discovery: An Incremental Revolution, Rebecca Minnillo
Student Scholarship
Theorists such as Simon (1973), Popper (1959) and Kuhn (1962) have commented on the tendency to view scientific discovery as a "revolution" with a focus on an end result. In history, we "date" scientific discoveries as if they were events instead of the final outcome of a lengthy experimentation process. But, as Kuhn (1962:7) observed nearly a half-century ago, scientific revolution is, in fact, a "process rarely completed by a single man and never overnight". Rather, discovery most often occurs as a result of collaboration and interaction between researchers over protracted periods of time. Surprisingly, there is a paucity of …

Appreciative Inquiry-Based Intervention: A Network View Of Organizational Renewal, Thomas H. Carlson
Appreciative Inquiry-Based Intervention: A Network View Of Organizational Renewal, Thomas H. Carlson
Student Scholarship
This paper describes the design, conduct and outcomes of an Appreciative Inquiry-based intervention. The subject group was a newly formed unit of a health care organization. The unit was formed by merging elements of two preexisting groups, and was guided by inexperienced managers. Previous interaction between those groups had been characterized by distrust and competition. Appreciative Inquiry provided the foundation for the intervention. Members of the unit galvanized around identified strengths, shared values and beliefs, shared perspectives, and a positive vision of their future; the normative-relational aspect of the intervention. On that foundation, members of the unit developed generative skills …

A Unified Interdisciplinary Theory Of Open Source Culture And Entertainment, Jerald Hughes, Karl Reiner Lang, Eric K. Clemons, Robert J. Kauffman
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Digital technologies are profoundly transforming the production and consumption of culture and entertainment products. The emerging digital re-mix culture is an open source approach where content products in the arts and entertainment industries are increasingly rearranged, manipulated, and extended in the process of creating new works. This article offers a unified description of the tools and techniques that led to the development of the open source culture and that enable the processes which promote re-use of previously recorded materials. It then lays out the incentives and forces that either promote or inhibit the development, distribution, and consumption of modified cultural …

Mixed farming systems are defined by Sere and Steinfeld (1996) as those in which more than 10% of the dry matter fed to livestock comes from crop by-products or stubble, and more than 10% of the value of production comes from non-livestock farming activities. More simply, they are systems where livestock rearing and crop cultivation are, to a greater or lesser extent, integrated components of one farming system. The more integrated systems are characterized by interdependency between crop and livestock activity, optimizing circulation of locally available nutrients. The less integrated systems are those in which crop and livestock activities make …

The Economic Impact Of The Stanislaus County Food Processing Industry And The Food Processing By-Products Use Program, Jay E. Noel, Sean P. Hurley, Jessica Bylsma
Agribusiness
In the late 1970’s, Stanislaus County recognized that there existed a potential issue with the disposal of food processing by-products. The concern at the time was that the disposal of the by-products could be handled in a more efficient manner that could benefit all interested stakeholders. In 1978, the county took a proactive stance on the issue and brought together a group of producers, UC extension representatives, management from local food processors, and other interested stakeholders to discuss better ways of handling the by-products that came from processing agricultural products. As a result of these discussions, Stanislaus County developed the …

Enterprise Factors Contributing To The Success Of Malaysian Biotechnology Smes: A Grounded Theory Approach, Saridan Abu Bakar, Mohamed Sulaiman, Intan Osman
The South East Asian Journal of Management
While numerous empirical studies have been conducted in Western countries on biotechnology enterprises, little empirical research has been done in Malaysia especially in respect to the factors that contribute to the success of biotechnology small and medium enterprises (SMEs). In view of this, a study was undertaken recently in Malaysia to address this gap in the existing body of biotechnology knowledge. Using a grounded theory approach, this qualitative study managed to develop a conceptual framework that sheds useful information on the enterprise factors that significantly impact the success of Malaysian biotechnology SMEs. Specifically, this study found that organizational structure, innovation …

Identifying Strategies That Encourage Resolve To Exhibit Moral Courage, Jeff Barnes, David Christensen, David Rees
Identifying Strategies That Encourage Resolve To Exhibit Moral Courage, Jeff Barnes, David Christensen, David Rees
Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology
Recent highly-publicized business scandals involving accounting ethical failures have encouraged research and recommendations to teach business ethics throughout the business curriculum. Research studies provide evidence that increasing moral sensitivity and judgment is possible over short periods of moral instruction, however, having higher moral sensitivity and judgment does not guarantee that moral courage will be displayed under duress. This study identifies personal moral courage intention strategies to support morally courageous acts.

Agribusiness
The invention of agriculture that occurred around 10,000 years ago heralded a shift from nomadic hunting and gathering to more managed forms of food, feed and fibre production. The domestication of crops initially involved the saving of seed from one season for planting in subsequent years. Later, farmers purposefully selected crop varieties and so in practice began matching and, by repeated selection over many years, adapting crop genetics to the environment in which the crop was grown. From its inception, enhancing G x E (i.e., gene by environment) interactions was an intrinsic, if not defining, feature of agriculture.

Developing A Managerial Plan To Guide The Planning Process For Charity Events, Nicole Molina
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this paper was to develop a managerial plan to guide the planning process for charity events. A guideline was developed, tested and refined based on a case study of the Prostate Cancer Foundation charity held in October, 2007 at Wynn Las Vegas. A strategy arose from an adaptation of the standard business plans outlined by the Small Business Administration. The resulting business plan, detailed event checklist and timeline will be a guiding tool when planning other charity events.

Impact Of Culture On International Business Negotiation: A Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Taiwan, Hong Kong, And Mainland China, Jung-Tsung Tu
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Each year international business amounts to more than $1 trillion U.S. dollars (WTO, 2005). Both foreign investment and international trade are growing substantially, causing increasing interdependence of national economies as well as furthering the globalization of companies. Presently, Greater China's economy holds an increasingly large influence on the world. Despite the enthusiasm for increased economic exchange, many people have found that cultural differences have hindered their ability to efficiently conduct business due to their lack of understanding of the cultural differences among Chinese citizens living in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China. People engaged in the negotiations of agreements in …
Marketing As Constructive Engagement, Clifford J. Shultz
Marketing As Constructive Engagement, Clifford J. Shultz
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
The purpose of this essay is to provoke a more comprehensive, historically accurate, and meaningful definition of marketing. Toward that outcome, the author introduces a framework for marketing that argues for constructive engagement with a complex, conflicted, and increasingly interdependent world in which marketing can and should play an important role. The framework offers a new synthesis commensurate with ideals generally espoused in macromarketing. An illustration based on longitudinal study of Vietnam is shared, with implications for current global affairs and with new directions for meaningful marketing research and practice.

Forecasting In Rapidly Changing Environments: An Application To The Us Motion Picture Industry, Anirban Mukherjee, Kadiyali Vrinda
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Markets with rapidly changing environments provide forecasting challenges because of fewer similarities between past and future outcomes. In this paper, we provide a methodology that enables forecasting with relatively short histories. The application is to the U.S. motion picture industry where we forecast revenues in theatrical, sales (DVD and VHS), and rental channels. Using short market histories of similar products, we account for (1) observed and unobserved movie-specific characteristics, (2) seasonality of demand, (3) competition within and across multiple distribution channels (4) market expansion, substitution and complementarity between movies inside and across distribution channels. We extend the multiplicative competitive interaction …

Livestock keeping is critical for many of the poor in the developing world, often contributing to multiple livelihood objectives and offering pathways out of poverty. Livestock keeping also affects an indispensable asset of the poor, their human capital, through its impact on their own nutrition and health. This paper outlines the linkages between livestock keeping and the physical well-being of the poor, and examines a number of commonly held beliefs that misrepresent livestock development issues related to these linkages. These beliefs limit the scope of intervention programs to promote livestock and limit their potential contribution to poverty reduction. Recognition of …

A Benefit Transfer Approach To The Estimation Of Agro-Ecosystems Services Benefits: A Case Study Of Kern County, California, Eivis Quenani-Petrela, Jay E. Noel, Thomas Mastin
Agribusiness
Agro-ecosystem functions support not only the production of food and fiber but a variety of non-market goods and services that are socially valuable. Examples of those non-market goods and services include aesthetic experiences, wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration, and recreation to name a few. There is a growing awareness of the importance that provision of these non-market goods and services has to the long-run sustainability of agriculture in general and California agriculture in particular. This awareness has led to an increasing interest in the estimation of the economic value of agro-ecosystem functions non-market goods and services. This increased awareness can be …

Sources Of Wood And Wood Residues For Energy Production In Indiana, Isaac Slaven, Eva Haviarova, Klein Ileleji
Faculty Research & Creative Activity
As energy prices rise and there is a push for energy to be produced from renewable resources, the contribution of Indiana’s corn and soybean industry often overshadows the impact that wood residues can have in response to these demands. Reports show that the wood products industry is the largest, by paid wages, of any agricultural industry in Indiana and employs 47,000 Hoosiers (Biocrossroads 2005). In fact, Indiana has more than 4.5 million acres of forest land (USDA FS, FIA 2005) compared to about 12.3 million acres of crop land (NASS 2006). In addition to the millions of acres of forestland, …
