Value Added Fed And Feeder Cattle Practices: Are They Paying?, Elliott James Dennis Feb 2020

Value Added Fed And Feeder Cattle Practices: Are They Paying?, Elliott James Dennis

Extension Farm and Ranch Management News

Summary

Some value added management programs clearly pay more than others and some do not pay at all. However, just like with a breeding or forage management strategy where not every year the cow gets bred back or the grass has sufficient protein, a value added program strategies premiums vary year to year. Switching the way cattle are managed and raised, handled, and fed requires planning and an understanding of labor and management capabilities. Not every cattle producer could or even should switch management practices an animal health protocol – even if premiums do exist. Thus, careful planning and consideration …

Superstition, Conspicuous Spending, And Housing Market: Evidence From Singapore, Jia He, Haoming Liu, Tien Foo Sing, Changcheng Song, Wei-Kang Wong Feb 2020

Superstition, Conspicuous Spending, And Housing Market: Evidence From Singapore, Jia He, Haoming Liu, Tien Foo Sing, Changcheng Song, Wei-Kang Wong

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We study the effect of superstition and conspicuous spending motives on housing demand and price in Singapore. We find that buyers pay less for homes with unlucky addresses and more for homes with lucky addresses. There were fewer housing transactions on inauspicious days of the lunar calendar when people are advised to avoid making major economic decisions. This suggests that superstitious belief still affects economic activities. The demand for lucky addresses is also weaker on these inauspicious days, suggesting that superstitious belief indeed affects the demand for lucky addresses. Moreover, the price premium for a lucky address is significantly higher …

An Empirically Supported Taxonomy Of Misinformation, Mark Chong, Murphy Choy

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Fake news, which includes both disinformation and misinformation, has been a challenge for many countries in the last few years. Disinformation has been present in modern history as part of the tool kit of PSYOPS for the military. Likewise, misinformation has been part of human history for a long time. Hoaxes, rumors, and urban legends—all of which can be classified as differing types of misinformation, although they are not commonly addressed as such—have been exploited by adversarial organizations for their own benefit. This study will propose a comprehensive taxonomy to tackle fake news, disinformation, and misinformation and assess the level …

Situational Judgment Tests For Selection: Traditional Versus Construct-Driven Approaches, Paul A. Tiffin, Lewis W. Paton, Deborah O'Mara, Carolyn Maccann, Jonas W. B. Lang, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Context: Historically, situational judgement tests (SJTs) have been widely used for personnel selection. Their use in medical selection in Europe is growing, with plans for further expansion into North America and Australasia, in an attempt to measure and select on ‘non-academic’ personal attributes. However, there is a lack of clarity regarding what such tests actually measure and how they should be designed, scored and implemented within the medical and health education selection process. In particular, the theoretical basis from which such tests are developed will determine the scoring options available, influencing their psychometric properties and, ultimately, their validity. Methods: The …

Specifically, this research focused on the self-regulatory elements of (i) goal setting, (ii) limiting beliefs, (iii) habit …

Pearls, People, And Power : Pearling And Indian Ocean Worlds, Pedro Machado, Steve Mullins, Joseph Christensen

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Pearls, People, and Power is the first book to examine the trade, distribution, production, and consumption of pearls and mother-of-pearl in the global Indian Ocean over more than five centuries. While scholars have long recognized the importance of pearling to the social, cultural, and economic practices of both coastal and inland areas, the overwhelming majority have confined themselves to highly localized or at best regional studies of the pearl trade. By contrast, this book stresses how pearling and the exchange in pearl shell were interconnected processes that brought the ports, islands, and coasts into close relation with one another, creating …

Post-Brexit Implications On Irish Freight Transport And Logistics Sector, Amr Mahfouz, John Crowe, Rishi Choudhary, Jennifer Floody, Aly Owida Dr, Declan Allan

Technical Reports/Case Studies

The study quantifies the impact that new custom checks and Agri/SPS inspection procedures could have on agri-food supply chains. It is possible that these checks will be introduced at both EU27 and UK ports. The analysis shows the potential risks to the Irish agri-food supply chain. These risks are explained through a range of non-tariff barriers and Ireland/EU transport connectivity scenarios. There is potential for disruption in the long-established transportation routes between Ireland, the UK and Continental European markets. Direct shipping routes (i.e. links directly between Ireland and the EU26) have therefore been considered in this case. This consideration comes …

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Increasingly, criminal justice practitioners have been called on to help solve breaches in cyber security. However, while the demand for criminal justice participation in cyber investigations increases daily, most universities are lagging in their educational and training opportunities for students entering the criminal justice fields. This article discusses the need to incorporate courses discussing the Dark Web in criminal justice. A review of existing cyber-criminal justice programs in Texas and nationally suggests that most community colleges and 4-year universities have yet to develop courses/programs in understanding and investigating the Dark Web on the internet. The Dark Web serves as the …

Biodynamic Preparations: A Dilemma To Use, Shwetazalavadiya Shwetazalavadiya, Anwarulhaq Payalmakavana

International Review of Business and Economics

Biodynamics is an agricultural management system based on degradation of food produced through farming practices that increasingly relied on additions of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides. Biodynamics were thought to be one of the first alternative approaches to modern agriculture as one of three alternative or ‘‘organic’’ agricultural methodologies. Biodynamic preparations influences organic life on earth through cosmic and terrestrial forces that would stimulate vitalizing and harmonizing processes in the soil. Some preparations are made by packing cow manure or silica, respectively, into cow horns and burying them for a number of months before use. It was believed that cow horns, …

Leveraging Economic Growth: A Swot Analysis, Sudhanva V. Char

International Review of Business and Economics

India accounted for 30 percent or more of World GDP a little over a thousand years ago, a level no other country has attained anytime in history. Then came China’s rise, and the pillages and plunders of invaders who literally raided India. The European colonizers came soon thereafter, continuing the loot of India more systematically. Today China has made up for lost growth and has emerged as the second largest economy in the world. India, under a democratic political framework with some devious and corrupt political actors, is struggling to make progress. The last five years has witnessed much nationalistic …

Improve Yield And Quality Of Senile Orchard With Rejuvenation And Nutrient Management, Kiran S. Jotava

International Review of Business and Economics

Day by day newer technologies are under implementation and become popular among the orchardists. Decades ago orchard establishment was made by varying spacing and different source of planting materials of either sexual or asexual methods. Factors Influencing Consumers’ Expected Food Waste, Kara R. Grant, R. Karina Gallardo, Jill J. Mccluskey Jan 2020

Factors Influencing Consumers’ Expected Food Waste, Kara R. Grant, R. Karina Gallardo, Jill J. Mccluskey

Faculty Publications - College of Business

This study analyzes the factors influencing consumers’ self-reported expected food waste when preparing a meal at home versus buying the meal already prepared. Results show that far-off expiration dates are expected to generate less food waste—particularly for fresh produce used in larger quantities and chicken. The Ready to Heat meal generated the lowest expected food waste. Convenient meal alternatives have the potential to reduce organic food waste, aside from any potential packaging waste, by facilitating the handling of products in transit, improving logistics, and reducing organic food waste.
