The Distribution And Utilization Of Agave In The American Southwest, Alvin Russell Grove Jul 1937

The Distribution And Utilization Of Agave In The American Southwest, Alvin Russell Grove

Biology ETDs

It is the purpose of this thesis to show in a comparative way the importance of Agave sp. for food, drink, fiber, etc., among various tribes comprising the American Southwest.

The problem is important from ethnological and ethnobiological standpoints. Through a study of man's attempt to utilize for food, etc., articles which grew at hand, one can better understand him. The methods of plant utilization show the effect of the environment on the man as well as his attempts to adjust himself to it or adjust the environment to himself. The problem, in addition, is an ecological one, showing the …

A Study Of The Relation Of Temperature To Antibody Formation In Cold-Blooded Animals, Earl C. Mcdaniel Jun 1937

A Study Of The Relation Of Temperature To Antibody Formation In Cold-Blooded Animals, Earl C. Mcdaniel

Biology ETDs

It is an established fact that when warm-blooded animals are inoculated with foreign protein, in a great many instances they become immune, due to the formation of antibodies specific for the protein injected. In warm-blooded animals the body temperature is constant. The question naturally arises as to what the situation would be with regard to antibody formation in a cold-blooded animal where body temperature is not constant; also what part, if any, the temperature of the body would have to do with the antibody formation.

In a careful review of the literature practically nothing could be found in having direct …

Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of Drosophila Melanogaster And The Bar Duplication In The Heterozygous Fly, Gertrude H. Tromp Jun 1937

Salivary Gland Chromosomes Of Drosophila Melanogaster And The Bar Duplication In The Heterozygous Fly, Gertrude H. Tromp

Bachelors’ Theses

in view or the fact that salivary gland chromosomes are being so thoroughly studied at the present time, it is interesting to notice that as early as 1881 Balbiani reported the chromosomes in the Chironomus fly. He interpreted the "bands" which are of such importance to the cytologists today, as disks of chromatic material. The achromatic material he called "zwischensubstanz" or as it is now termed the matrix. Leydig (1883) also worked with the Chironomus fly. He thought that the "bands" were similar to muscle fiber striation. Carnoy (1884) believed the chromosomes were hollow cylinders and the chromatin arranged to …

The Effects Of X-Rays Upon The Roots Of Zea Mays, Bernard Louis Wolfe

Bachelors’ Theses

Since. the discovery of X-rays by Rontgen in 1895, the majority of published papers dealing with the influence of these rays on plant life have considered their general effects on physiological processes including rate of seed germination and growth, respiration, and movements. A large number of investigators have worked on the morphological and cytological aspects while comparatively few workers have been interested in the histological effects of the stimulated tissues. The purpose of this thesis is to show the histological, morphological, and cytological effects of X-rays upon the root tips or the Zea Mays as well as the effects these …

The Flora Of The Tasco Lake Region, Sheridan County, Kansas, Raymond W. Darland

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

It has been customary in writing theses dealing with taxonomic problems to collect data from an entire county. Having had occasion to collect botanical specimens from the Tasco Lake for work in biology at the Sheridan High School, the wealth of plant life to be found here became apparent. The area ranges from xerophytic forms on the uplands to the hydrophytic forms in the lake and marshes. Many of the latter have never been reported from Western Kansas. Collections in preserving fluid were made of the water forms found and specimens of the landforms were mounted on regulation-sized sheets properly …

A Study Of Some Phases Of The Gametophyte Of Preissia Commutata Nees, Marion Steuber

Bachelors’ Theses

The beginnings of the exact knowledge of the Hepaticae dates from the work of Hofmeister, who in 1350 to 1362 published important investigations on them. He discovered the egg cell in the archegonium, traced the sperm to the surface of the egg and showed that it was fertilized by the sperm.

Spermatogenesis Of The Albino Rat (Nus Norvegicus Albus), Norman A. Frankenstein May 1936

Spermatogenesis Of The Albino Rat (Nus Norvegicus Albus), Norman A. Frankenstein

Bachelors’ Theses

This thesis deals with the inquiry opened by the fundamental discovery that the gamete nuclei, and hence, the two parents from which they are respectively derived, con tribute each a haploid or single group of chromosomes to the fertilized egg. Each act of fertilization doubles the gametic number of chromosomes; yet the number of characteristic of the species remains constant from generation to generation. Somewhere in the life cycle, accordingly, the diploid or somatic number must be reduced by one-half to the haploid or gametic number. The first explanation was that reduction took place by some process of degeneration or …

Histological Study Of The Structure Of The Testis Of Rana Pipiens, John L. Friedl

Bachelors’ Theses

All the living organisms, be they plant or animal, act as a unit which implies that the various anatomical and physiological systems are coordinated either for the benefit of the Individual itself or for the maintenance of the species. For convenience sake, the individual is divided into a digestive,. respiratory, circulatory, nervous, muscular, and skeletal systems; but there is one system which although of some value to the individual is primarily adapted for the production of other individuals, and this is the reproductive system.
