The scientific name first applied to the thirteen-lined ground squirrel was Scuirus tridecemlineatus by Mitchell in 1821. The same species has also been referred to as Spermophilus tridecemlineatus. At the present time it is recognized as belonging to the genus Cltellus and the species is divided into geographical races. Most of the middle western part of North America is the natural habitat of the thirteen-lined ground squirrel — Cltellus tridecemlineatus tridecemlineatus. Very little, if any, work has been done on the thorax musculature in · the larvae stage of insects. The work that has been done has been confined mostly to the muscles of the abdominal region. From this work it has been found that extraordinary differences in muscle pattern occur often between larvae and adult stages of the same species. Toranosuke Sugiura (1926) published a study on Meiosis in Tropaeolum majus L in which he found the number of chromosomes in the pollen mother cells to be 14. In the post synaptic phase, there were four aired chromosomes forming long rods. The other univalent ones formed shorter rods of irregular form.

Although there has been extensive research carried on with growth variations of rats, there has been comparatively little done on this subject with respect to mice. Stefan Kopec (1938) carried out an experiment in which 24, 000 daily weights were taken of 3 female and 49 male black - and - white - spotted, white, and lilac mice, all sexually mature. He found that males showed non-cyclic weight increase with irregular fluctuations, while the females showed marked cycles of weight change. These

The drought of the last seven years with its disastrous dust storms has damaged vast areas of the native prairie as well as much of the cultivated land. Deficient rainfall has caused crop failures over large areas, leaving the fields without a protective covering. Due to these conditions, wind erosion started the dry, loose soil to drifting. Large amounts of the soil settled on the grassland and destroyed much of the native plant cover. Buffalo grass (Buchloe dactyloides) is a dioecious, stoloniferous perennial which, with Blue Grama grass (Bouteloua gracilis), forms the short grass faciation of the Great Plains. Its range extends from Saskatchewan to Mexico in the plains area. It is exceedingly valuable as forage, both during the growing season and winter, since cured grass is relished by livestock. Its stoloniferous habits make it an aggressive plant, and give it great soil-biding properties. This species of grass has vast possibilities in revegetation practices. Without the aid of a microscope, Bichat in 1800 studied tissues of various parts of the body, and, even though he did not make any cellular sketches, his work laid the foundation for histology. Then after the announcement of the cell theory by Schleiden and Schwann in 1839, a new path opened for histological study. Leydig (1864) applied the histology of that day to the lower animals. Cajal (1906) cleared up the complicated relations of the tissues together with a complete investigation of the nervous system.

The tubers of Nephrolepis cordifolia.- Baker were first reported and studied by Professor Heinricher (1881). His work with the tubers was concerned with what he termed regeneration. Continuing from the stomach, the digestive tract becomes a smaller tube whose internal surface is much increased by means of folds--the plica circularis, the villi, and crypts of Lieberkühn. The plica (formerly known as valvulae conniventes) are really elevations of the submucosa covered on both sides by the entire mucous membrane-villi, glands, and muscularis mucosae. The mucosa membrane, or tunica mucosa, is lined by simple columnar epithelium in which many goblet cells are present, particularly in the deeper folds. The basement membrane, as well as the muscularis mucosa, are identical with those of the stomach.
