A Study Of Saponification Rates As Characteristic Of Esters, Thomas F. Mitchell Jr.

The saponification of esters has been the subject of considerable study, and the technology of manipulation of the reaction well defined. As a result, the reaction has become a quantitative standard for ester analysis. However the comparison of the rates of this reaction with various esters as charaeteristic of them has received little consideration compared to the course of the reaction. The work of Mr. F. E. Adler on the adaptation of fat constants to waxes suggested the problem. The thesis will attempt to ascertain any significant differences in the saponification rates of various esters with regard to their characterization.

In spite of the fact that Pasturella pestis, the the etiological organism of plague, has been reported from fleas and rodents in eleven counties of New Mexico, our knowledge of the fleas of the State has remained very incomplete and extremely meager. Recognizing the marked deficiency regarding our information of the Siphonaptera of New Mexico, I began in the spring of 1948 an investigation that has resulted in adding considerable information to our knowledge of the flea population of our State.

A survey of literature shows that no community or bioecological study has ever been made of the pinyon pine-juniper association as it occurs in the Upper Sonoran Life Zone in New Mexico and southern Colorado. This deficiency of knowledge relative to the pinyon pine-juniper community is in direct contrast to several studies that have been made of the same community in Arizona and Utah by the presence of dominant trees of entirely different species. It is the purpose of this paper to report the results of quantitative investigations of the choline esterase activity in the rat in various states of its life cycle. Some work has been done on the acetylcholine content (Welsh and Hyde, 1944) in rats of various ages, but there is no reference in the literature to complete the quantitative determinations of the choline esterase activity in the whole brain of the rat throughout its life cycle.

Eighty-five percent of human beings have an agglutinogen similar to that in rhesus monkeys, now called the Rh factor. This natural antibody is comparable to those which make human blood divisible into the Landsteiner groups A, B, AB, and O. This Rh factor is so called because it was first discovered in the blood of rhesus monkeys. Its importance is that it provides an explanations for previously baffling reactions to blood transfusions and the loss of babies by apparently healthy women during or shortly after pregnancy.

Saccharomyces cerevisiae has long been a fungus of economic importance in the baking and beverage fields. A large amount of research has been done on this yeast cytologically and biochemically. However, due to its small size and difficulty in staining, the cytology of the yeast cell remains somewhat in question. Chromosomes and division figures have been demonstrated by several workers, but there still remain sharp differences of opinion as to the nature of the nucleus. Schizophyllum commune Fries is a member of the Hymeno­ mycetes. This genus has long intrigued mycologists because of the peculiar "spliit gills'' it characteristically possesses. For a long time, however, not much importance was attached to the fungus until it was reported from many parts or the world and its. pathogenicity as a wood-destroying agaric established.
