Leaf Tissue Production In Relation To Succession In The Spruce-Fir Forests Of Northern New Mexico, Craig F. Eberhart Jul 1977

Leaf Tissue Production In Relation To Succession In The Spruce-Fir Forests Of Northern New Mexico, Craig F. Eberhart

Biology ETDs

Leaf tissue production was studied to determine possible successional trends. The study area was in the spruce-fir zone of the southern Rocky Mountains 15 kilometers northeast of Santa Fe, New Mexico. In this area quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a successional species that is slowly replaced by Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii) and corkbark fir (Abies lasiocarpa var. arizonica) as succession proceeds towards the classical spruce-fir climax. Five study plots were subjectively selected to represent a successional sequence of forest stands with similar physical characteristics. The plots were arranged in a successional series by using the increase in coniferous basal area …

An Evaluation Of Reproductive Isolation And The Possibility Of Hybridization Between The Rattlesnakes Crotalus Atrox And Crotalus Scutulatus, James S. Jacob Jul 1977

An Evaluation Of Reproductive Isolation And The Possibility Of Hybridization Between The Rattlesnakes Crotalus Atrox And Crotalus Scutulatus, James S. Jacob

Biology ETDs

The possibility that Crotalus atrox and C. scutulatus might hybridize in southeastern Arizona-southwestern New Mexico or in the Big Bend region of Texas was analyzed morphometrically and electrophoretically. Interbreeding of captive Crotalus, and intraspecific variation and interspecific overlap in key morphological characters has led to the incorrect assumption that these species hybridize. Even though they are syntopic primarily in an unstable desert-grassland ecotone where habitat differences are not evident, C. atrox and C. scutulatus are morphologically and biochemically distinct. The apparent lack of geographic, mechanical, and ecological premating isolating mechanisms in syntopic populations off C. atrox and C. scutulatus suggests …

Buoyancy Changes As Related To Respiratory Behavior In An Amphibious Snail, Pomacea Urceus (Müller), From Venezuela, Kathleen A. Burky, Albert J. Burky

Biology Faculty Publications

The ampullariid Pomacea urceus uses its ctenidium and lung in respiration. The snails reach the surface with their siphon and ventilate their lung by withdrawing their head-foot in a pumping action. The lung gas also serves to change the buoyancy of the snails. After a ventilation a snail does not necessarily return to the same buoyancy level. They may achieve overall specific gravities of <1 to > 1 after a ventilation. They may remain submerged (s.g. > 1) or float (s.g.

The Effect Of Cv-1 Cell Geometry On The Ultraviolet Radiation Sensitivity Of Mammalian Cells In Vitro, Daniel J. Knauer

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The effect of cell geometry on the radiosensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) light has been studied in the CV-1 host cell-capacity system. In this system the macromolecular damage incurred by monolayers of cells cultures as the result of exposure to UV radiation is monitored by testing the ability of irradiated cells to support the replication of Herpes simplex virus. The target molecule has been shown to be DNA and is centrally located

Mammalian cells have an absolute requirement for Mg++ and Ca++ in order to remain attached to artificial substrata. To test the effect of cell geometry on UV …

The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide Concentration On Calcification In The Red Coralline Alga Bossiella Orbigniana, A. Dwight Smith Jun 1977

The Effect Of Carbon Dioxide Concentration On Calcification In The Red Coralline Alga Bossiella Orbigniana, A. Dwight Smith

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The relationship between various experimental concentrations of CO2 and calcification was studied by measuring Ca-45 incorporation into the crystalline matrix. Air containing CO2 at partial pressures (Pc02) of 0.04% to 5.5% was bubbled through synthetic sea water in incubation vessels. The resultant pH values ranged from 8.7 to 6.5. The relative concentrations ofCO2, HCO3 , and CO2— 3 were calculated from the measured ' pH—PCO2 combinations. Calcification was correlated positively with HCO expressed as percent of total carbon. Maximum calcification of about one—third above normal occurred between 0.1% and 1.0% P CCOO22 At 0.26% P calcification increased as increments of …

An Analysis Of Species Recognition In Sympatric, Allopatric And Reciprocally Cross-Fostered Peromyscus Californicus And Peromyscus Eremicus (Rodentia, Cricetidae), Ronald L. Carter

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Experiments were performed to compare homospecific and heterospecific mate selection in two closely related species, Peromyscus californicus and Peromyscus eremicus. Comparisons were made between allopatric and sympatric populations and between males and females for mate selection performance. Both species made significant choice for the homospecific chambers. Significant homospecific choice was made by mice from sympatric populations, whereas allopatric populations did not demonstrate significant choice. No significant difference in choice performance was demonstrated between males and females even when the estrus stages of the females were controlled.

A comparison of different testing lengths and temporal regimes of data collection was performed …

Optimal Foraging: A Selective Review Of Theory And Tests, G.H. Pyke, H.R. Pulliam, Eric Charnov Jun 1977

Optimal Foraging: A Selective Review Of Theory And Tests, G.H. Pyke, H.R. Pulliam, Eric Charnov

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

Beginning with Emlen (1966) and MacArthur and Pianka (1966) and extending through the last ten years, several authors have sought to predict the foraging behavior of animals by menas of mathematical models. These models are very similar, in that they all assume that the fitness of a foraging animal is a function of the efficiency of foraging measured in terms of some "currency" (Schoener, 1971) - usually energy - and that natural selection has resulted in animals that forage so as to maximize this fitness. As a result of these similarities, the models have become known as "optimal foraging models"; …

A Multivariate Study Of The Family Molossidae (Mammalia, Chiroptera): Morphology, Ecology, Evolution, Patricia Waring Freeman

Biology ETDs

The Molossidae is a worldwide, mostly tropical family of bats. This analysis examines what phenetically similar groups occur within the family; what ecological role species of molossids may have; and, finally, what kind of evolutionary relationships exist among phenetically similar species.

Seventy-six characters were taken on each of eighty species of molossids and analyzed by principal components, distance (size-in and size-out), and correlation analyses from the NT-SYS package of multivariate statistical programs. Phenetically similar bats are grouped and described morphologically. Morphological trends which are revealed by the principal components analysis are used to make ecological predictions about the bats' feeding …

Laboratory Diagnosis Of Genital Infections Associated With Chlamydia Trachomatis: Cell Culture And Serological Methods, Linda L. Cole May 1977

Laboratory Diagnosis Of Genital Infections Associated With Chlamydia Trachomatis: Cell Culture And Serological Methods, Linda L. Cole

Biology ETDs

Recent investigations have revealed the widespread involvement of Chlamydia trachomatis in nongonococcal genital infections in man. In an effort to develop the necessary methodology for isolating this agent, several different cell culture techniques were evaluated.

Additionally, a fluorescent antibody technique and neutralization test were developed for possible diagnostic use.

Quantitation of Chlamydia in cell culture was accomplished using inclusion counts which showed linear dose response curves. Inclusions were stained by the PAS, iodine, and Giemsa methods, and these stains were found to be equal in their sensitivity in detecting chlamydia inclusions. Using inclusion counts as a quantitative assay, a variety …

Fine Structural Aspects Of The Developing Eye Of The Honey Bee, Judith Susan Eisen May 1977

Fine Structural Aspects Of The Developing Eye Of The Honey Bee, Judith Susan Eisen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The post-embryonic development of the compound eye of the worker honey bee was investigated with the light and electron microscopes. The cells of the optic primordium were reorganized into preommatidial cell clusters during the late third and early fourth larval instars. Each cluster contained nine prospective retinula cells, the ninth was centrally located and shorter than the other eight; four prospective cone cells; and an undetennined number of prospective pigment cells.

Rhabdomere development began in the eight peripherally located retinula cells just prior to pupation. Following pupation, each ommatidium elongated. During ommatidial elongation, the short ninth retinula cell moved from …

Community Structure Of Ten Southwestern Rodent Faunas, Terrence Morgan May May 1977

Community Structure Of Ten Southwestern Rodent Faunas, Terrence Morgan May

Biology ETDs

Thirty morphological characters were measured for each of 63 rodent species. All characters were standardized to a mean of zero (O) and standard deviation equal to one (1). From this assemblage, subsets were chosen to represent ten (10) naturally occurring rodent communities of New Mexico and Arizona. Numerical taxonomy techniques of distance, correlation and principal components analysis were used to analyze the data.

Results reveal three distinct community 'types'. The presence or absence of morphologically divergent species is responsible for these differences. The appearance of Castor canadensis (the most morpho-logically divergent species) is dependent upon the addition of a new …
