Annual grasslands characteristically experience a succession of seasonal phases which provide for the coexistence of various species by allowing them to make their major demands upon environmental resources at different times. Thus, an ecosystem furnishing certain resources at a limited rate is enabled to support a larger total biomass.

The grasslands of southern California consist principally of annual grasses coexisting with the few remaining native perennial grasses. Characteristic also is the inclusion of forbs which are distinctly either early spring or late summer plants. Vertical Banding And Associated Behavioral Responses Evoked By Electrical Stimulation Of The Brain In Anesthetized And Free-Swimming Sunfishes, Lepomis Cyanellus And L. Macrochirus, Diana Hoenke Bauer

A pattern of dark vertical bands is a characteristic display by Lepomis cyanellus and L. macrochirus. The rapidity with which this display can appear and disappear indicates that it is neurally controlled. This study was carried out in order to identify regions in the brain involved in the control of this color pattern and to determine other behavior patterns associated with electrical stimulation of these regions. Initially, anesthetized fish which were held in a stereotaxic device were stimulated electrically at various sites in the brain to locate regions where vertical banding could be evoked. Clark's Nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) rely heavily on seeds of pinon pine (Pinus edulis) as a winter food supply in years of good seed production. During late summer and autumn these birds spend considerable time and energy harvesting seeds from green, unopened cones. I tested abilities of three groups of wild-caught birds to discriminate cone quality: (1) adults, (2) experiences juveniles, and (3) naive juveniles. The birds were given choice tests with two cones, three cones, and cones that had been painted. Under controlled conditions nutcrackers discriminated between cones of differing quality. Adults assessed cones more accurately than did juveniles in …

Periodic collections were obtained from Sloan’s Crossing Pond, Mammoth Cave National Park, for one year to analyze, quantitatively and qualitatively, the periphyton community and determine patterns of periodicity. Productivity was measured by dry and ash-free dry weights and chlorophyll a content.

Productivity was lowest during the winter months and highest between July and September. Dry weight showed a range of 3.0-243 mg/m­²/day, the peak occurring in August. Ash-free dry weight also reached its annual peak in August at 92 mg/m²/day. Chlorophyll a followed the pattern of dry weight except its peak was obtained in July at …

Ecotypic Differentiation In Ohio & Mississippi Populations Of Acer Negundo L., Anthony Greco

Laboratory investigations of Acer negundo populations from two widely separated habitats revealed distinct patterns of ecotypic differentiation in budbursting, leaf fall, and chlorophyll levels. Second year seedlings of Mississippi seed origin had complete leaf emergence before any evidence of budbursting in the Ohio progeny of similar age. Leaf fall patterns showed a clear difference between the two populations with Ohio plants dropping their leaves 2.5 weeks prior to complete defoliation in the Mississippi progeny. Significant differences in chlorophyll levels were demonstrated with the more northern (higher latitude) Ohio population showing consistently greater amounts of chlorophyll per gram dry weight than …

An Analysis Of The Heavy Metal Content Of The Scales Of Several Fishes In Southwestern Kentucky, Thomas Dahl

Scales of the stoneroller, Campostoma anomalum (Rafinesque), common shiner, Notropus cornutus (Mitchill), and the bluntnose minnow, Pimephales notatus (Rafinesque) were analyzed by means of atomic absorption spectrophotometry to determine levels of cadmium, calcium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel and zinc. Metal concentrations were determined seasonally and relationship established between scale metal content and environmental water metal levels.

Calcium, iron manganese and zinc were found in all samples analyzed. Cadmium, copper, lead and nickel were not observed in measurable quantities.

Metal concentrations varied interspecifically, but most showed little fluctuation in response to increased metal content of the water. Elemental composition of …

Adult BALB/c mice were immunized with C57BL/6 spleen cells first on day 0 and again on day 8 of the experimental procedure. Serum was collected from these animals on day 0 (before the first immunization), day 4, day 8 (before the second immunization), day 12, and day 16. Two groups of normal BALB/c bone marrow cell suspensions were incubated with the experimental immune sera: and one of the groups of cell suspensions was subsequently incubated with bacterial lipopolysaccharide. Mice undergoing a graft-versus-host reaction (GVHR) exhibit a surppressed immune response. Cells responsible for this suppression have been found to be localized in the spleen. Thus, in this research, a study was made to evaluate the effect of spleen cells from F­₁ mice undergoing a GVHR upon the humoral immune response to sheep erythrocytea (SRBC) in parental mice. An attempt was made to create an experimental model involving the transfer of suppressor cells in vivo. Spider community acceptance of, and segregation by, architectural configuration was investigated for the spiders of Green Canyon in northern Utah. Modular habitat units consisting of 30.48 centimeter (1 foot) cubes of chicken wire supporting internal strands of macrame jute tied in different orthogonal configurations were used. Configurations including all three axes were tested at two strand densities.

The primary null hypothesis tested, that spider species use structures independent of architecture, was rejected in favor of the alternate hypothesis that spider species differentially use structures dependent upon architecture. Previous studies have been shown that IgA paraproteins suppress human neutrophil chemotaxis. This investigation was undertaken to determine the effect of isolated IgA myeloma component (IgA-MC) on eosinophil chemotaxis. The data presented here indicate that IgA myeloma sera inhibit eosinophil chemotaxis, and demonstrate that the IgA-MC is responsible for this chemotactic inhibitory activity (CIA). Chemotactic inhibition was cell directed and was lost following pepsin digestion or dithiothreitol reduction alkylation of the IgA-MC. Polymeric IgA was shown to be the most effective inhibitor of eosinophil chemotaxis as determined by Sephadex G-200 gel filtration chromatography and sucrose density gradient centrifugation. The DNA synthesized during stable DNA replication (i.e., DNA replication in the absence of protein synthesis following a period of thymine starvation) was found to be alkali or RNase sensitive. Experiments were performed using both alkaline and neutral cell lysis and gradient sedimentation. Initial results under alkaline conditions revealed much smaller size DNA material than would normally be expected. This data was interpreted to show a reduced rate of DNA chain growth. However, under neutral conditions the DNA material was found to be nearly normal in size. The presence of an alkali-sensitive componant (RNA) was suspected and tested for with …

Distribution Of Etheostoma Nigrum Rafinesque, Etheostoma Olmstedi Storer, And Their Introgressive Hybrid Populations In The James River Drainage, John Edward Clark

An analysis of proportional measurements and meristic characters of Etheostoma nigrum and E. olmstedi identified five populations within the James River drainage. Etheostoma nigrum inhabited the montane and piedmont areas through the Fall Line; E. o. atromaculatum was distributed throughout the tidal river and its lower tributaries; and E. o. olmstedi was restricted to creeks on the upper coastal plain. Appomattox River and Falling Creek contained introgressive hybrid populations with character frequency distributions intermediate to those of E. nigrum and E. o. olmstedi. It is proposed that E. nigrum probably entered these drainages through stream piracy on piedmont tributaries of …

The eggs of Rana pipiens, the southern leopard frog, were offered in several forms to Lepomis macro­ chirus, the bluegill. The fish were offered random trial discrimination tests while in groups of one or five in 40 1 aquaria. L. macrochirus learned to make distinct discriminations and rejected fertilized and unfertilized egg masses, boiled egg masses, dried frog eggs and gelatin made with homogenated frog eggs. In contrast, Shrimp-el-etts, Shrimp-el-etts dyed black, gelatin made with peptone, and ovarian eggs were accept­ ed readily.
