The effects of increasing hydrogen ion concentration on rate of chloride influx and efflux were studied in the killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus, adapted to fresh water. Because increasing hydrogen ion concentrations have been shown to inhibit sodium influx and because evidence exists to support coupling of chloride transport with sodium transport, the present study was undertaken to determine what effect pH would have on rate of chloride flux. Chloride efflux rates were studied after the addition of sodium bicarbonate to the medium. No significant pH-dependent changes in efflux rate were observed, except at very low pH. A microtiter, solid-phase, indirect radioimmunoassay (RIA) has been developed and evaluated as a method for detecting poliovirus in water samples. Antiserum to poliovirus Type I, LSc2ab, was prepared in rabbits, and high titer, high avidity antiserum to rabbit globulins were radio- actively labeled with 125I by a modification of the Bolton-Hunter and chloramine T methods to increasing specific activities. Asiatic clams (Corbicula manilensis Philippi) were sampled at twelve stations randomly located along a 16-km stretch of the Wekiva River, Florida, every three months fro August 1976 to June 1977. Clams were found at most stations. Their abundance ranged from 4 to 1210 per m2. Mean numbers of Corbicula were highest at stations where the bottom sediments were primarily sand and lowest at stations where the bottom sediments were silt and decomposing organic matter. A linear relationship between water temperature, water depth, current velocity, total alkalinity, and pH, and the abundance and distribution of Corbicula was not evident. Seasonally, the …

Bacteria from dry and wet roadside environments were examined for the ability to degrade hydrocarbons. The kinds and numbers of bacteria observed were similar to those reported in other petroleum contaminated environments. Surface soils (top 2.5 cm) immediately adjacent to the highway pavement and the sediments of shallow drainage ditches contained the highest concentrations of petroleum degrading bacteria (9.8 x 107 CFU/g). Concentration and species diversity of petroleum degrading bacteria decreased with distance from the highway pavement. Chromatographic analysis of highway stormwater runoff and the soil in close proximity to the highway indicated the presence of complex hydrocarbon mixtures of …

Effects Of Thyrotoxicosis On Mitochondrial Enzymes Of Rat Soleus, James B. Courtright, Robert H. Fitts

Cytochrome oxidase, glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and succinate dehydrogenase were measured in mitochondrial fractions obtained from rat soleus muscle of control and 8 week T₃ + T₄ treated animals. Under these conditions of prolonged treatment, there is a five-fold increase in the specific activities of both cytochrome oxidase and glycerols-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. Significant increases in total cellular mitochondrial content and enzyme activities were observed in T₃ + T₄ treated animals as compared to controls. These results indicate that thyrotoxicosis can induce selective changes in mitochondrial enzymes in slow twitch red (Type I) muscle fibers.

Zooplankton populations in the St. Johns River Estuary ranged from 3,000/m3 to 20,000/m3 during monthly collections from September, 1973 to August, 1974. Acartia tonsa Dana was the dominant organism throughout the year, except for spring blooms of Balanus sp. nauplii in the lower estuary and summer occurrences of Eubosmin tubins in the upper estuary. With these two exceptions, species composition, and community structure were similar throughout the estuary, year round. A patchy distribution of the zooplankton caused high replicate sample variation which made it difficult to detect small population variations. Comparison Of Carbon And Nitrogen Content Of Infected And Uninfected Snails, Succinea Ovalis, And The Trematode Leucochloridium Variae, Albert J. Burky, Daniel J. Hornbach

In June, 6.7% of adult Succinea ovalis collected near Urbana, Ohio, were infected with the trematode, Leucochloridium variae. The effects of parasitism were assessed as total organic carbon (equivalent to calorific values) and as total nitrogen. The parasite represents 23.8% of total (parasite + snail tissue) dry tissue weight, 21.4% of total carbon and 19.8% of total nitrogen of infected snails. The higher C:N ratio for parasite tissue indicates a higher proportion of nonproteinaceous compounds (e.g., fats and/or carbohydrates) as compared to host tissue. There is less snail tissue in parasitized S. ovalis. The C:N ratios for parasitized and nonparasitized …

Analysis of historical nutrient data for Lake Mead indicates that the fertility of the reservoir has decreased which may be the cause for a corresponding decline in the largemouth bass population. However, it appears that fertility can be manipulated by altering the operation of the dam. The depletion of nutrients in the euphotic zone by phytoplankton and subsequent accumulation in the hypolimnion during summer and fall provide a natural nutrient gradient from which water of varying fertility can be drawn for discharge. This combined with alterations in the depth or seasonal pattern of discharge can possibly be used to enhance …

Genetic variation at twelve loci which code for enzymes and non-enzymatic protein has been studied by means of starch gel electrophoresis in two apparent species of the pelecypod genus Transennella, Variable allozymes include esterase, leucine aminopeptidase, malate dehydrogenase, phosphoglucose isomerase, tetrazolium oxidase, and nonenzymatic protein, Observed allele frequencies for these systems are in close agreement with Hardy-Weinberg expectations indicating that these protandric hermaphrodites are outbreeding. The genus is characterized by two distinct morphotypes which differ in shell shape and pigmentation. The morphology of the proboscis--particularly the epiproboscis, the feeding behavior, the function(s) of the epiproboscis, and the functional morphology of the epiproboscis, were studied in Mitra idea Melville and fi. catalinae Dall (Gastropoda: Neogastropoda; Mitridae.

In M. idae, the epiproboscis is an extensible muscular J-shaped rod which curves under the odontophore, and lies parallel to the longitudinal axis of the proboscis. A muscular external sheath encloses that portion of the epiproboscis which lies within the proboscis haemacoel; an invaginated muscular-epithelial internal sheath covers the ventral part of the epiproboscis. Acute inflammation is associated with injury to tissues, whether it be from mechanical destruction, or from the introduction of a noxious substance into the tissue. Inflammation is a homeostatic process, adapted to neutralize harmful substances and restore injured tissue. Celsus (c. A.D. 178) provided the first documented characterization of inflammation. He recognized redness, heat, swelling and pain as the cardinal signs of the inflammatory reaction. Loss of function was later added to this list of symptons (Movat. 1971).

The presence of an adenyl cyclase system within the haemocyte of Periplaneta americana has been confirmed by previous investigations, with corresponding experiments using dibutyryl cyclic AMP to show enhancement of 14c-tyrosine uptake into the cuticle linked to stimulation of the sclerotization process.

In the present studies, American cockroaches held at depressed temperatures were treated with bursicon, revealing an increase in haemocyte cyclic AMP concentrations. The levels declined with progression of time, probably resulting from enzymatic hydrolysis.

An investigation of the effects of factorial combinations of race, explant, induction medium and age on chromosomal stability and regenerative ability of Arabidopsis thaliana callus was performed. Regenerative ability of primary and subcultured callus from all treatments was also examined. Somatic counts were performed on a sample of calluses from factorial combinations of two explants (anther and seedling) and two races (WS and HM) induced on three induction media (DBM-1, ACM-1 and PG-1) and subcultured onto maintenance medium (DBM-2-M) after 30, 60 and 90 days. Various physical and biological factors affecting annual productivity in a Red-tailed Hawk population in north-central Oregon were investigated. The percentage of the population successfully fledging one or more young was the most important factor in determining the number of young fledged per pair in a given year. Neither clutch size nor the number of young fledged per successful nest varied significantly. Percent pair success was correlated with several January weather variables. A cold and dry January is positively correlated with Red-tailed Hawk productivity. This is apparently related to the onset of rapid vegetative growth and this in turn is positively …

Between 1 March 1977 and 30 September 1978, a survey was made of the species of decapod crustaceans present in Iowa. During this time period all of Iowa's 99 counties were surveyed. A total of 2390 specimens representing 500 lots were collected from 492 different sites in Iowa. Specimens were collected by seining, dip netting, hand collecting, excavation, and trapping. An additional 1944 specimens were examined from existing collections. The Bat Ray, Myliobatis californica Gill, occurs from Oregon to the Gulf of California and is common in California bays during the spring and summer. MacGinitie (1935) observed that during its feeding activities, the Bat Ray can dig channels up to 1 meter wide, 50 cm deep and 4.5 meters long in benthic substrates. In intertidal sand flats in Tomales Bay, California, circular pits up to 1 meter in diameter and 20 cm in depth are made by Bat Rays in late summer. In some areas over 50% of the sand flat surface is covered with Bat Ray pits. This …
