A study of the flora of Leslie Gulch Malheur County, Oregon was undertaken to elucidate the relationships of the flora and of the endemic species in the flora, and to determine if these endemic species are restricted to their present distribution by chemical factors of their substrate.

A checklist of native plants and a description of the major communities was made and floristic relationships were studied.

Chemical and mineralogical tests such as emission spectrography, x-ray diffraction and cation-exchange capacity as well as physical tests such as particle-size distribution and gravimetric water content were performed.

Pollination Dynamics In Two Subalpine Flower Meadows, Peter Andrew Beedlow Iii

Plant-pollinator interactions were studied in two subalpine meadows to determine the role of pollination in structuring the herbaceous flower communities. The majority of the entomophilous plant species set significantly less seed when caged to prevent visitation than when exposed to flower visitors. Visitation rate was directly related to temperature and radiation. The number of animal species visiting flowers each week was directly related to the number of plant species in bloom. Most visitor species used ≤3 species of plants, while most plant species hosted ≤8 species of flower visitors. Floral niche breadth increased with increasing animal species diversity, but animal …

Natural Selection And Sex Change In Pandalid Shrimp: Test Of A Life History Theory, Eric Charnov

This article presents a graphical approach to the genetical theory of sex change (similar to one recently applied to the evolution of simultaneous hermaphroditism). The graphs will help clarify a set of predictions to be tested against data from Pandalid shrimp. These shrimp are protandrous hermaphrodites (reproduce first as males). The goal is to use the genetical theory to predict the age of sex change. Since these shrimp show much geographic variation in this age, they provide a good opportunity to test the evolutionary model.

Growth Of Phytophthora Infestans Race 1.2.4 And Synthesis Of Steroid Glycoalkaloids By The Fungus In Synthetic Media, Melanie R. Maas

A chemically defined synthetic medium was developed in which Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary race 1.2.4 grew extensively. This medium consisted of: 90.0 grams maltose, 20.0 grams DL-alanine, 20.0 grams L-proline, 1.0 gram KNO₃, 0.5 gram KH₂PO₄, 0.25 gram MgSO_4. 7H₂O, 1.0 milligram thiamin per liter of distilled water. The average level of growth in this medium was 0.5864 gram dry weight mycelium per 50 milliliters medium.

The glycoalkaloids, solanidine and solanine, were synthesized by Phytophthora infestans in the above medium with 62.5 percent of the samples positive and an overall …

Halogeton glomeratus (M. Bieb) C.A. Mey when grown in nutrient solution, caused the solution pH to decrease very rapidly as plants increased in size, especially during the fifth week of growth. This might be attributed to hydrogen ion exchange for cations. Also, the cation uptake, especially K and Na, may exceed that of the major anions. The control of pH is effective in increasing shoot weights markedly.

In general there was no difference between plants grown at the same NaCl concentration at low and high relative humidity. An increase in plant size, shoot weights, leaf length and diameter was detected …

The intent in undertaking this thesis project was to set up a practical, economic, and reliable method of species identification for Mycobacteria. This was directed specifically at the clinical laboratory setting.

I began by testing the commonly published identification

tests for accuracy and reproduceability. For many of the commonly used tests the reliability left much to be desired. Several months after beginning my research I learned of an evaluation method developed by Dr. Eugene Rypka at Lovelace Foundation. The evaluation method developed by Dr. Rypka (1960) is based on a separation of characters by considering positive, negative or variable results. …

Unequal Sex Ratios In An Unhunted Mule Deer Population In New Mexico, Pamela Cotton

The adult sex ratio and the sex ratio at birth was determined for the unhunted mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) population occupying the riverbed area of the Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, Socorro County, New Mexico. The adult sex ratio was computed as the number of yearling and adult males per number of yearling and adult females observed within the effective area of seven linear one-mile transects established on the study area in accordance with the Stake Estimator Technique (Evans 1975). The ratio of 586 males:501 females (117:100) was significantly different from a 50:50 ratio. No evidence was found for …

The ability of female mice to reject tailskin grafts from male mice of the same inbred strain appears to be regulated by genes located in the major histocompatibility complex of the female recipient. Cell-meditated responses of “nonrejector” strain female mice, grafted with male tailskin, were studied to better understand regulation of the immune response to H-Y (male) antigen. Both in vivo and in vitro experimental systems were used. Survival of male skin grafts on splenectomized female recipients was compared with survival of grafts on untreated females and on splenectomized females reconstituted with spleen or thymus cell preparations. Malaria, the number one disease in the world, is caused by intracellular protozoans belonging to the Subphylum, Sporozoa; Suborder, Haemosphoridia; and Family, Plasmodiidae. The four classical organisms producing disease in man are Plasmodium vivax, P. falciparum, P. malariae, and P. ovale. Although malaria has been known to man for centuries, attempts are still being made to control and eliminate its devastating effects in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Motility Of The Microtubular Axostyle In Pyrsonympha, George M. Langford, Shinya Inoué

The rhythmic movement of the microtubular axostyle in the termite flagellate, Pyrsonympha vertens, was analyzed with polarization and electron microscopy. The protozoan axostyle is birefringent as a result of the semi-crystalline alignment of approximately 2,000 microtubules. The birefringence of the organelle permits analysis of the beat pattern in vivo. Modifications of the beat pattern were achieved with visible and UV microbeam irradiation. The beating axostyle is helically twisted and has two principal movements, one resembling ciliary and the other flagellar beating. The development of Missouri's new lead belt within the past decade has provided an excellent opportunity to study the dissemination and effects of heavy metals in a deciduous forest ecosystem. Primary lead smelters, within the new lead belt have been identified as potential sources of cadmium as well as lead, zinc, and copper. Sintering and blast furnace operations tend to produce significant quantities of small particulates highly enriched in cadmium and other heavy metals. At one smelter, samples of stack particulate emissions indicate that as much as 0.21 lb of cadmium may be released to the atmosphere per hour. This …

Clutches of eggs wore collected from nesting loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta caretta) on Merritt Island, Florida, during June - August 1977. Of these, 46 clutches were selected for experimentation to determine the extent to which certain factors affect hatching success. Twelve clutches were divided into subsamples which were incubated in sand maintained at 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% moisture. Another twelve clutches were divided into subsamples and incubated in sand kept moist with the following percentages of seawater: 0 (distilled water), 25, 50, 75, and 100%; subsamples from four other clutches were subjected to the effects of one …

Larvae of the predatory crustacean Squilla empusa were collected from the plankton in Chesapeake Bay and reared in the laboratory to permit description of the pelagic stages before the postlarval stage.

Characters such as rostral length and spinulation, carapace spinulation, relative size of telson, overall body size, and appearance probably are of more value for specific than for generic identification. The presence or absence of teeth on the dactylus of the second maxilliped, the presence or absence of a spine on the basis of the second maxilliped, and the number of epipods may be useful characters in determining generic alliances …

Age, growth, and food habits of the population of Micropterus salmoides (largemouth bass) in Westhampton Lake were studied from September to November, 1978. Two year classes (O and I) were identified by determining numbers of annuli on the scales of the fish. Growth data indicated that the bass attain a size of 254 mm (10 in.) near the end of their second summer. The length-weight relationship was log W = - 4.6829 + 2.9153 log TL. The Fulton condition factor for the population was 1.40. Food habits were described by numerical and frequency of occurrence methods. Young of the year …

The marsh clam, Rangia cuneata has been shown in other laboratories to maintain body fluid osmolality above that of the medium in salinities below 10 o/oo. Since the membrane bound enzyme Na ++ K+ - ATPase has been implicated in the osmoregulatory processes in many aquatic organisms, the levels of Na++K+-ATPase activity and 3H-ouabain binding in homogenized tissue samples from mantle, gill, rectum, ventricle, kidney, and foot (including epithelial and muscle tissue) were measured.
