Zooplankton Abundance And Diversity In Spring Lake, Florida, 1973-1976, Barry D. Billets Apr 1981

Zooplankton Abundance And Diversity In Spring Lake, Florida, 1973-1976, Barry D. Billets

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Seasonal variation in zooplanton abundance and diversity in Spring Lake, Florida was studies between 1973 - 1976. This clear, sand bottom lake is considered among the most oligotrophic in central Florida. Sixty rotifer species, sixteen cladoceran species, and seven copepod species were collected during the three year study. Annual mean zooplanton abundances ranged between 70 individuals/l and 80 individuals/l. Rotifers were more abundant than either cladocerans or adult copepods. Rotifers and immature crustaceans comprised nearly 75% of the annual mean zooplankton abundance. There was no significant difference (P < 0.05) between years for the annual mean abundance of zooplankton. The monthly mean abundance of cladocerans and adult copepods was generally less than 5 individuals/l. The greater abundance of rotifers in comparison to other zooplankton was mainly responsible for the variation in the values of the Shannon and Simpson Indices. The monthly mean Shannon Index was usually between 3.0 and 4.0. Seasonal differences in zooplankton abundance were apparently due to water temperature and specific conductivity for the 1974 - 1975 and 1975 - 1976 study years. Shannon diversity was significantly correlated with dissolved oxygen for the 1973 - 1974 and 1974 - 1975 study years.

Palynological Correlation Of The Kentucky No. 12 Coal, Gerald E. Vyhmeister Apr 1981

Palynological Correlation Of The Kentucky No. 12 Coal, Gerald E. Vyhmeister

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In attempting to analyze the depositional environment for the Kentucky No. 12 Coal three columns were sampled from a 1 km area. The columns yielded 76 miospore species belonging to 33 genera, and representing in decreasing order of abundance, arborescent lycopods, tree ferns, calamites, small ferns, gymnospermous trees, seed ferns, herbaceous lycopods, and others from unknown origin.

The pattern of spore distribution in the columns did not appear to be affected by the presence of several partings, a feature which calls into question several mechanisms proposed for the origin of partings and also creates difficulties for an autochthonous origin for …

Predation By Pellet-Reared Tiger Muskellunge On Minnows And Bluegills In Experimental Systems, Alan L. Gillen, Roy A. Stein, Robert R. Carline Mar 1981

Predation By Pellet-Reared Tiger Muskellunge On Minnows And Bluegills In Experimental Systems, Alan L. Gillen, Roy A. Stein, Robert R. Carline

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Studies in Wisconsin lakes have shown that stocked tiger muskellunge( F1 hybrids of female muskellunge, Esox masquinongy * male northern pike, E.lucius) reared on live food survive better than those reared entirely on dry pellet food. We evaluated the ability of pellet-reared hybrids to convert to a minnow(Notropis spp. and Pimephales promelas) or bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) diet in laboratory aquaria and hatchery ponds. In aquaria, 86-310-mm (total length) tiger muskellunge selected cyprinids that were about 40% of their own length and bluegills that were about 30% of their length, sizes closely predicted by an optimal foraging construct (time from prey …

Comparison Of Dna Synthesis Patterns In Polytene Chromosomes Between Normal And 20-Hydroxyecdysone-Treated Larvae, Eileen Robertson Feb 1981

Comparison Of Dna Synthesis Patterns In Polytene Chromosomes Between Normal And 20-Hydroxyecdysone-Treated Larvae, Eileen Robertson

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to compare the patterns of chromosomal DNA synthesis during normal larval development with those patterns observed by Fresquez (1976) for hormonally-induced DNA synthesis. This will determine whether DNA synthesis responds in the same way in normal development as it does in the hormonally-induced state.

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

A study was undertaken to determine the food habits of two game fishes, the largemouth bass Micropterus salmoides (Lacepede) and the spotted bass M. punctulatus (Rafinesque) in Beech Fork Reservoir shortly after its impoundment. A total of 171 largemouth bass and 95 spotted bass were collected from July 1978, through June 1979, and their stomach contents analyzed.

Largemouth bass fed primarily on fishes, particularly young-of-the-year bluegill. Aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates were also important food items, especially during the spring and fall . The dominant aquatic forms were chironomid larvae and pupae while the dominant terrestrial forms were adult dipterans.

Spotted …

Larval Specialization And Phenotypic Variation In Arctopsyche-Grandis (Trichoptera, Hydropsychidae), F. Richard Hauer, Jack Arthur Stanford

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Life history, trophic dynamics, abundance, and microdistribution of Arctopsyche grandis (Banks) were investigated in the Flathead River Basin, Montana. Two morphologically and ecological distinct larvae (Type I, with a head stripe and Type II, without a head stripe) were found throughout the drainage except in lower order streams. Type II larvae grew more rapidly and attained a larger size in final instar than Type I larvae. In areas where A. grandis biomass was greatest, Type I larvae were >10 times as abundant as Type II larvae. Type II larvae selected microhabitats characterized by larger interstitial spaces; Type I larvae were …

Changes In Myosin And Myosin Light Chain Kinase During Myogenesis, Stylianos P. Scordilis, J. Maurice Miles, Robert S. Adelstein, B. William Uhlendorf, Sigfrido Scarpa, Giulio L. Cantoni

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Myosins and myosin light chain kinases have been isolated from a cloned line of myoblasts (L5/A10) as this cell line undergoes differentiation toward adult muscle. At least three myosin isozymes were obtained during this developmental process. Initially a nonmuscle type of myosin was found in the myoblasts. The molecular weights of the myoblast light chains were 20 000 and 15 000. Myosin isolated from early myotubes had light chains with molecular weights of 20 000 and 19 500. Myosin isolated from myotubes which contained sarcomeres had light chains with molecular weights of 23 000, 18 500, and 16000. This last …

Interpopulation Variation In Calcareous And Proteinaceous Shell Components In The Stream Limpet, Ferrissia Rivularis, Carl M. Way, Daniel J. Hornbach, Albert J. Burky

Biology Faculty Publications

Natural populations of the North American stream limpet, F. rivularis, were studied in upstate New York [USA], in a set of localities whose waters have a 15-fold range of dissolved Ca (4.6-67.6 mg/liter) and also range from oligotrophy to eutrophy. Shell component analyses (CaCO3, total organic C and total N) are reported as component mass-fractions (mg/g or .mu.g/g dry weight) and as values for a standard limpet shell of 35 mm aperture length (AL). More than 2-fold differences occur between populations in all 3 components, with relatively little variation occurring within each population. Expressed per standard limpet, CaCO3 values for …

Seasonal Metabolism Of The Sphaeriid Clam, Musculium Partumeium (Say), From A Permanent And A Temporary Pond, Carl M. Way, Daniel J. Hornbach, Albert J. Burky

Biology Faculty Publications

Seasonal metabolic rates were examined for the sphaeriid clam, Musculium partumeium (Say) from a permanent and a temporary pond. For the fall-born generation from the permanent pond and for the single generation from the temporary pond, metabolic rates peak during periods of greatest growth and reproduction. Metabolic rates were consistently higher for the permanent pond population. These rates for Musculium partumeium extend the available information on the family Sphaeriidae to the genus Musculium.

CCPO Publications

Continuous surface mapping of temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll along a 300-km segment of the Gulf Stream cyclonic front defined the spatial scales of a large diatom patch that persisted throughout a 10-day study. The patch was localized in the upwelled cold core of a Gulf Stream frontal eddy centered over the 200-m isobaths off Jacksonville, Florida, in April 1979. The µ g liter-1 surface chlorophyll isopleth enclosed an area >1,000km2 with an alongshore dimension of 130km. Surface chlorophyll exceeded 5µg liter-1 within the upwelled cold core of the eddy, 10-100X higher than concentrations in Gulf Stream or …

Sex Ratio Evolution In A Variable Environment, Eric Charnov, Hartogh R.L. Los-Den, W.T. Jones, J. Van Den Assem Jan 1981

Sex Ratio Evolution In A Variable Environment, Eric Charnov, Hartogh R.L. Los-Den, W.T. Jones, J. Van Den Assem

Biology Faculty & Staff Publications

We develop a natural selection model for sex ratio control in a spatially variable environment. Predictions of sex ratio alteration as a function of environmental change are tested in laboratory experiments with two parasitic wasps. Field data from a variety of other organisms also support the model. Finally, we discuss possibilities and difficulties for testing this type of evolutionary model.

Analysis Of A Controlling-Element Mutation At The Adh Locus Of Maize, John Osterman, Drew Schwartz

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A Ds-suppressed Adh mutant was isolated by the allyl alcohol pollen selection

technique. The mutant produces a reduced level of an altered thermolabile

enzyme suggesting that the Ds element is inserted in the Adh structural gene.

The mutant protein is enzymatically active and does not differ detectably in

size from the progenitor protein. A number of possible explanations for the data

are presented.

Population Dynamics Of Musculus Senhousia And Protothaca Staminea In Tomales Bay, California, David Mcclain Nelson Jan 1981

Population Dynamics Of Musculus Senhousia And Protothaca Staminea In Tomales Bay, California, David Mcclain Nelson

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The changes in population density, growth and biomass of two infaunal, sympatric, suspension-feeding bivalves, Musculus senhousia (Benson, 1842) and Protothaca staminea (Conrad, 1837), have been investigated over an eighteen month period in Tomales Bay, California. M. senhousia, a mussel, displays two basic spawning times, one of which occurs in late spring, while the second spawning takes place in late summer. M. staminea, a venerid, spawns once during late spring. The population density of the mussel ranged from 9,180 m-2 in early spring to 752 m-2 in the fall of 1976. M. staminea had a maximum density of 1,120 m- 2 …

The Effect Of Dietary Supplements Of W3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids On The Fatty Acid Composition Of Platelets And Plasma Choline Phosphoglycerides, T. Sanders, Katherine Younger Jan 1981

The Effect Of Dietary Supplements Of W3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids On The Fatty Acid Composition Of Platelets And Plasma Choline Phosphoglycerides, T. Sanders, Katherine Younger

Articles

Although it is not known iflinolenic acid (18:3w3) is essential its derivatives are important (Tinoco et a/. 1979). Eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5w3) is the precursor of the triene prostaglandins (Gryglewski et a/. 1979) and when incorporated into platelet lipids may influence bleeding time (Sanders et al. 1980). Docosahexaenoic acid (22:0013) is a major component of human brain and retinal lipids and is found in its highest concentrations in the phosphoglycerides of synaptic membranes and rod outer segments implying that it has a role in neural transmission. Radiotracer experiments in vitro suggest that man can convert 18:3w3 to 20:5w3 and 22:0013 (De …

Eye Movement Related Single-Unit Recording In The Nucleus Reticularis Tegmenti Pontis In The Alert Monkey, William Franklin Crandall Jr. Jan 1981

Eye Movement Related Single-Unit Recording In The Nucleus Reticularis Tegmenti Pontis In The Alert Monkey, William Franklin Crandall Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Nucleus Reticularis Tegmenti Pontis (NRTP) is a structure which lies in the mid-brain ventral to the oculomotor complex. Anatomical studies strongly implicate it in oculomotor function as most of its inputs and outputs are to systems previously shown to be intimately involved in eye movement generation--superior colliculus (SC) and cerebellum. These reports show an integrative structure with inputs and outputs distributed in a way well suited for performing relay and feedback tasks. Physiological data in the alert, trained monkey has been gathered in an attempt to characterize these neurons and to classify them in functional terms. Three monkeys were trained …

Courtship And Reproduction In The Bali Mynah, Leucopsar Rothschildi (Aves : Sturnidae), Ann Patterson Marshall

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Reproductive behavior of captive Bali Mynahs (Leucopsar rothschildi) was studied at the Smithsonian Institution's Conservation and Research Center, Front Royal, Virginia. Courtship and copulation are followed by egg-laying, then incubation, hatching, brooding and feeding, fledging, and feeding. Parents become aggressive toward their young at the start of a new reproductive period, marked by a renewal of courtship.

The female does the majority of the incubation, brooding, and feeding of the young, although the male participates as well. The male performs both the bobbing· display and the crest display more than the female does. During these displays, the crest is prominently …

Plasmid-Mediated Resistance To Arsenite And Arsenate In Escherichia Coli, Thomas Patrick Trezona Jan 1981

Plasmid-Mediated Resistance To Arsenite And Arsenate In Escherichia Coli, Thomas Patrick Trezona

Dissertations and Theses

Bacterial strains resistant to arsenite, arsenate (or both) are readily isolated from nature. The resistance, in many cases, can be shown to be determined by conjugal plasmids. The mechanisms by which these plasmids confer resistance to arsenic compounds are entirely unknown. This study was undertaken to shed light on some of the physiological and genetic aspects of this resistance using plasmid-bearing strains of Escherichia coli which are highly resistant to both arsenite and arsenate. Most studies were carried out using E. coli J53 (R773) or the plasmid-free strain J53.

Plant Protection As A Consequence Of An Ant-Membracid Mutualism: Interactions On Goldenrod (Solidago Sp.), Frank J. Messina

Biology Faculty Publications

In central New York, two chrysomelid beetles, Trirhabda virgata and T. borealis, frequently cause severe defoliation of tall goldenrod, Solidago altissima. This plant is also the primary host of Publilia concava (Membracidae), a sap—feeding treehopper that is tended by ants, especially Formica spp. Staged encounters indicate that Formica ants attack adult Trirhabda beetles on goldenrod stems bearing membracids. Such stems escape defoliation by Trirhabda, and show greater mean height increment and seed production than their nearest neighbors without ants. The degree of plant protection depends on the duration of Formica presence. During Trirhabda outbreaks, only stems bearing Formica ants for …
