Remembrance Of Places Lasts: Proactive Inhibition And Patterns Of Choice In Rat Spatial Memory, William A. Roberts, Robert H.I. Dale
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
A series of experiments was carried out to evaluate the notion that rats given a sequence of massed daily trials on the radial maze reset working memory at the end of each trial by deleting its contents. Although curves presented by D. S. Olton [Scientific American, 1977, 236, 82-98: In S. H. Hulse, H. Fowler, & W. K. Honig (Eds.), Cognitive processes in animal behavior, 1978, Hillsdale, N.J.: Erlbaum] show that rats return to errorless performance at the beginning of each trial after the first, the fact that accuracy falls less rapidly over choices on Trial 1 …
The Spatial Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia, James William Newlin
The Spatial Distribution Of Phytoplankton In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia, James William Newlin
Master's Theses
The hypothesis is that spatial distributions of phytoplankton standing crop and photosynthetic capacity in Westhampton Lake are homogeneous was tested. Distributions were analyzed with respect to horizontal and vertical planes separately and combined. The study was divided into three time period: 1) late summer stratification, 2) early fall mixing, and 3) fall turnover, based on isothermal lines of the lake at the deepest station. Phytoplankton standing crop was measured by spectrophotometric and fluorometric methods. The photosynthetic capacity was measured flurometrically. Combined horizontal and vertical spatial distribution of standing crop was clumped for the entire lake and during each time period. …

Electrophoretic Mobilities Of Topoisomers Of Φx174 Dna, Virginia Mckee Hanson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The analysis of nucleic acid structure by zone electrophoresis in agarose gels has become an increasingly important method in studies requiring the separation and identification of species differing only slightly in molecular weight or conformation. We have demonstrated the existence of several circular DNA forms that appear in cells infected with the bacteriophage ΦX174.
Wt/am3 heteroduplex molecules containing a single base mismatch (relaxed RFI molecules) were constructed in vitro, purified by sedimentation, and analyzed by zone electrophoresis on 1.4% agarose gels. In order to verify that the band of denaturation-resistant heteroduplex was indeed relaxed RFI, we compared …

A Genetic And Physiological Study Of An Arsenite Resistant, Uncoupled Mutant Of Escherichia Coli, Daniel Gordon Smiley
A Genetic And Physiological Study Of An Arsenite Resistant, Uncoupled Mutant Of Escherichia Coli, Daniel Gordon Smiley
Dissertations and Theses
Chromosomally determined arsenate resistance in Escherichia coli is well characterized. Little, however, is known about chromosomally determined arsenite resistance in E. coli. Accordingly, spontaneous arsenite resistant mutants were selected in a plasmid free strain of E. coli. One mutant strain was analyzed in detail, genetically and physiologically. The mutation confering arsenite resistance was shown to be a single gene mutation. Genetic mapping studies using conjugation and transduction showed that the mutation was closely linked to the ilv region of the E. coli map.
Physiological studies of this mutant showed that it shared characteristics common to those of mutants …
Systematics Of Isocarpha (Compositae: Eupatorieae), David J. Keil, Tod F. Stuessy
Systematics Of Isocarpha (Compositae: Eupatorieae), David J. Keil, Tod F. Stuessy
Biological Sciences
Isocarpha comprises five species ranging from southern Texas and the Bahamas to northern Peru and northeastern Brazil. The genus belongs in Eupatorieae rather than Heliantheae, but structure of the head of Isocarpha with its elongate, chaffy receptacle is anomalous within Eupatorieae. An hypothesis is presented suggesting the evolutionary derivation of this type of head through formation of floral buds in the axils of the involucral bracts. Generic ties of Isocarpha within Eupatorieae are unclear, but the closest affinities appear to be with Ayapana and relatives.

Population Structure And Reproduction In The Introduced Florida Population Of The Pike Killifish, Belonesox Belizanus (Pisces: Poeciliidae), James S. Turner
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The pike killifish, Belonesox belizanus Kner, is the largest member of the live-bearing family Poeciliidae. The species is native to Central America, and was introduced into Dade County, Florida in 1957. B. belizanus is primarily piscivorous, and has been identified as a potential ecological "problem" species for Florida due to its heavy predation on small native fishes, especially the mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). The population structure and reproduction of the Florida population were investigated in this study from field samples and aquarium observations. The mean standard length (SL) of mature females was about 103 mm. Most females larger than 75 mm …

A Study Of Seasonal Occurences & Movement Patterns Of Fishes In Barren River, William Kruskamp
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The ichthyofauna of the Barren River tailwater was studied from October 1979 to August 1980 to determine seasonal occurrences and movement patterns in relation to discharges from Barren River Lake. Thirteen families and 38 species were represented in the 15,408 fish captured. The season in which the greatest number of fish was captured was winter (7,731) with the highest monthly total occurring in February (5,159). These large totals resulted mostly from the presence of small gizzard shad. The greatest number of fish per kilometer of river sampled occurred in spring just below the dam at River Kilometer 127. Of the …
The Effects Of Denervation On Caudal Fin Regeneration In The Goldfish, Carassius Auratus (Linnaeus), Janet Rowlett
The Effects Of Denervation On Caudal Fin Regeneration In The Goldfish, Carassius Auratus (Linnaeus), Janet Rowlett
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Goldfish of the wild-strain variety, Carassius auratus, were used in the study of caudal fin regeneration. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of denervation on caudal fin regeneration.
In the experimental groups, it was evident that denervation did not prevent regeneration, although it was significantly reduced. Statistical analysis using the Duncan's Multiple Range Test showed a highly significant difference (0.01 % level) in the mean percentage of regeneration between the denerved group and the other three groups.
Caudal fins having proximal amputations regenerated at a faster rate than those having distal amputations, producing a higher …
The Effects Of Controlled Harvest On Some Biological Characteristics Of Smallmouth Buffalo In Rough River Lake, Kentucky, Dennis Webb
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
In Rough River Lake, Kentucky, effects of controlled harvest of some biological characteristics of smallmouth buffalo were investigated from December 1979 through July 1980. Spawning activity was monitored from 28 March through 24 July with buffalo larvae occurring for one week. A successful spawn was precluded by non-optimum water levels or other conditions operating in the lake. Commercial harvest was monitored from December 1979 through March 1980, and age and growth features were determined from 783 smallmouth buffalo representing a portion of the 3955 buffalo removed from Rough River Lake in 1979-80. A population estimate of the Rough River Lake …

Effect Of Simulated Tidal Patterns On Growth And Growth Line Formation In The Little Neck Clam, Protothaca Staminea, Orlando Irsula
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Growth lines in bivalve mollusks have been thought to reflect solar days, circadian rhythms and/or tides. Tides seem to be the dominating influence in some intertidal species. This study provides laboratory evidence suggesting that tides are a major influence in the number of growth lines in the clam Protothaca staminea.
Clams were grown under 4 different "tidal" regimes, (0, 1, 2 and 3 tides per day) for forty-one days. Acetate peels of shell cross sections were used for growth line counting. Photomicrographs and measurements showed a striking difference in the growth and number of growth lines between the 4 tidal …

Biphenyl Hydroxylation By Vole Hepatic Microsomes, Moheb H. Makary
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Metabolism of biphenyl by meadow voles (Microtus montanus) liver microsomes was studied by gas liquid chromatography. The microsomal biphenyl hydroxylation of Swiss Webster mice (outbred) was also investigated to provide a species comparison. 4-hydroxybiphenyl (major metabolite), 3-hydroxy biphenyl (minor) and smaller amounts of 2-hydroxybiphenyl were identified as metabolites of biphenyl incubated with vole liver microsomes. Liver microsomes from Swiss mice formed 4-hydroxy biphenyl (major metabolite) and almost equal amounts of 2- and 3-hydroxy biphenyl (minor metabolite). The amount of the hydroxy biphenyls formed by vole liver microsomes was considerably less per milligram of microsomal protein than for mice. …

Lake Orienta and Little Lake Fairview received 2,320 and 960 grass carp, respectively, while Clear Lake and Lake Mann did not receive grass carp. Hydrilla was eliminated in Lake Orienta within six months of stocking; the lake was stocked at 19 grass carp/mt hydrilla (45 fish/ha). Hydrilla was not eliminated from Little Lake Fairview which contained 9 grass carp/mt hydrilla (30 fish/ha). The growth of hydrilla was restricted in Little Lake Fairview which produced 0.380 mt hydrilla, …
Seasonal Periodicity Of Periphytic Algae In Relation To Water Quality In Three Florida Experimental Ponds, Michael J. Gilbrook
Seasonal Periodicity Of Periphytic Algae In Relation To Water Quality In Three Florida Experimental Ponds, Michael J. Gilbrook
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Periphytic algae biomass, periphyton taxonomic composition and water quality were monitored from October, 1978 through October, 1979 in three experimental ponds on the University of Central Florida campus, Orlando, Florida. Differences in the abundance and seasonal periodicity of phytoplankton in the ponds presumably arose from intrinsic differences in the nature of the pond sediments. Ceramic tile and pressboard wood artificial substrates were sampled at two-month intervals to provide estimates of periphyton biomass and productivity; there was no significant difference in algal biomass on wood and tile substrates. Algal productivity on continuous-immersion (cumulative) substrates which supported a large accumulation of periphyton …

An Experimental Study Of Dispersal Of The Cotton Rat, Sigmodon Hispidus, Stephen R. Stafford
An Experimental Study Of Dispersal Of The Cotton Rat, Sigmodon Hispidus, Stephen R. Stafford
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Dispersal of cotton rats was examined over an annual cycle of abundance by removal trapping in pine flatwoods. All cotton rats live-trapped at biweekly intervals on two 0.49 ha grids were removed, whereas rats on an adjacent control grid were tagged an released alive on site. The null hypothesis was that dispersing cotton rats would represent a random sample of sex and weight (age) classes from source populations, e.g. the control grid. Likewise, it was assumed that dispersal rates would be proportional to numerical changes in abundance on the control grid. Dispersing animals were clearly most prevalent on the removal …
