The Effect Of Sewage Effluent Removal On The Water Quality Of Lake Howell, Florida, Patricia L. Smith
The Effect Of Sewage Effluent Removal On The Water Quality Of Lake Howell, Florida, Patricia L. Smith
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
In April, 1983, sewage effluent discharge from the Maitland and Winter Park sewage treatment plants was diverted from Lake Howell to the Iron Bridge Regional Sewage Treatment Plant. The sewage treatment plants of the cities of Winter Park and Maitland had been discharging into Lake Howell since 1927 and 1962, respectively. These point sources had contributed 95% of the total phosphorus and 69% of the total nitrogen budgets for Lake Howell. Physico-chemical parameters were monitored monthly for two years chemical parameters were monitored monthly for two years from January, 1983 through December, 1984. Annual mean values fro chlorophylla, …

A Taxonomic Study Of Hawaiian Marchantia, Terri L. Roberts
A Taxonomic Study Of Hawaiian Marchantia, Terri L. Roberts
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The genus Marchantia occurs world-wide. The greatest diversity of described species occurs in the tropical Pacific. Fourteen species of Marchantia have been reported at different times from the Hawaiian Islands but when this study began seven species were recognized. A new technique for clearing thallus material enabled me to see and compare ambiguous characters. From studies of types and numerous additional collections from the islands, I determined that the seven species accepted actually belong to three taxa and one previously undescribed species was discovered. Comparison of Hawaiian plants with specimens, drawings and descriptions of extra-Hawaiian Marchantiae showed clearly that the …

Reproductive Strategies Of Meadow Voles, Hispid Cotton Rats, And Eastern Harvest Mice In Virginia, Robert K. Rose
Reproductive Strategies Of Meadow Voles, Hispid Cotton Rats, And Eastern Harvest Mice In Virginia, Robert K. Rose
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Patterns of reproduction in small mammals in Virginia were examined by autopsying samples of meadow voles (Microtus pennsylvanicus) collected for 23 months near Charlottesville, of hispid cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) collected for 14 months in Portsmouth, and by evaluating live-caught eastern harvest mice (Reithrodontomys humulis) trapped for 15 months in Suffolk and for 12 months in Chesapeake. The meadow vole, a microtine rodent with a north temperate and sub-arctic distribution throughout North America, suspended breeding during the winter of peak density but not of declining density. High metabolic rates and other adaptations for winter …

On The Phylogenetic Relationships Among Paenungulata And Within Elephantidae As Demonstrated By Molecular And Osteological Evidence, Jeheskel Shoshani
Wayne State University Dissertations
Paenungulata (=PAEN). A total of 182 non-dental morphological characters from 100 species (79 extant, 21 extinct; 98 mammals and 2 non-mammals) was analyzed by two maximum parsimony tree building algorithms. Parallel analyses of 2,258 pairwise immunodiffusion (IMDFN) comparisons with 16 chicken antisera on 101 mammalian species (representing 22 taxa) and of amino acid sequence data of alpha and beta hemoglobins and other published protein sequences were also conducted. Morphological and molecular results agree that Eutheria consists of five major clades and that rates of evolution are similar in the two approaches. Following are close relationships based on osteological results: (1) …
The Effect Of Food On Reproduction In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Iatipinna (Poeciliidae, Rebecca B. Smith
The Effect Of Food On Reproduction In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Iatipinna (Poeciliidae, Rebecca B. Smith
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Sailfin molly populations often experience a midsummer slump in reproduction, and it has been suggested that this slump is caused by food shortage. A food supplementation experiment on a natural population of mollies was done in 1983. Excess food did not directly affect the fecundity of females in the field. A laboratory experiment was designed to determine the food level on reproduction in females. Ration had the greatest effect on somatic condition and growth, indirectly influencing fecundity. Two explanations for this strategy are suggested. A significant difference in brood size and size of young was observed between the field and …
A Demographic Study Of An Isolated Population Of The Gopher Tortoise, Gopherus Polyphemus; And An Assessment Of A Relocation Procedure For Tortoises, Terry J. Doonan
A Demographic Study Of An Isolated Population Of The Gopher Tortoise, Gopherus Polyphemus; And An Assessment Of A Relocation Procedure For Tortoises, Terry J. Doonan
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
It is acknowledged that the gopher tortoise is declining in numbers throughout its geographic range primarily from degradation and loss of suitable habitat. This research project is part of a pilot program to study the effectiveness of relocation as a mitigation method for the conservation of gopher tortoises. There was an opportunity to gather information about the tortoise population prior to its relocation, and for that reason this thesis is presented in two sections.
The first section of this work involved the analysis of the tortoise population prior to its removal from the development site. Results of two methods for …
Evolution And Reproductive Biology Of Inflorescences In Lithocarpus, Castanopsis, Castanea, And Quercus (Fagaceae), Robert B. Kaul
Evolution And Reproductive Biology Of Inflorescences In Lithocarpus, Castanopsis, Castanea, And Quercus (Fagaceae), Robert B. Kaul
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Of Lithocarpus, Castanopsis, Castanea, and Quercus, only Lithocarpus frequently bears branched spikes suggestive of the primitive condition in the Fagaceae; the other genera sometimes have them in some individuals. Simple and branched spikes can occur on the same tree. Evolution of the simple spike is interpreted as the loss of branching capacity in the branched spikes. The Fagaceae show various transitional stages from perfect, entomophilous to imperfect, anemophilous flowers and from mixed-sex to unisexual spikes. Complete separation of staminate from pistillate function into separate spikes and catkins occurs only in Quercus, which is also the only …
A Taxonomic Re-Evaluation Of The Allium Sanbornii Complex, Stella Sue Denison
A Taxonomic Re-Evaluation Of The Allium Sanbornii Complex, Stella Sue Denison
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Allium sanbornii is a member of the Sanbornii alliance which is characterized by prominent ovarian crests and a single terete leaf. Because of inadequate material, previous investigators have confused species limits and lumped together taxa that are not conspecific. This investigation included herbarium and field studies and determined that previously ignored characters, such as the relative lengths of the inner and outer perianth segments, general attitude of the perianth segments and texture of the outer bulb coat, were useful in delimiting relationships within the complex. Based on these findings Allium sahbornii consists of two geographic variants: A. sahbornii var. sanbornii …

Physiological And Anatomical Aspects Of Photosynthesis Of Two Agrostis Species At A Sub‐Antarctic Island, Philippa M. Drennan
Biology Faculty Works
Leaf anatomy, rates of photosynthesis, leaf N, chlorophyll, RuBP carboxylase and nitrate reductase were studied on the indigenous Agrostis magellanica Lam. and the invasive alien Agrostis stolonifera L. on Marion Island (46° 54′ S, 37° 45′ E). Leaves of A. magellanica were more deeply ridged, thicker and more sclerophyllus than those of A. stolonifera. Mesophyll cells of A. magellanica were larger but the number of cells per unit leaf area and the total area of chloroplast per unit leaf area were the same for the two species. Maximum CO2 assimilation rates for the two species did not differ (mean maxima …

Quantitation And Identification Of Organic N-Chloramines Formed In Stomach Fluid On Ingestion Of Aqueous Hypochlorite, Frank E. Scully Jr., Katherine Mazina, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Frederick Kopfler
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The chemical reactions that hypochlorite undergoes in the body when chlorinated water is ingested have received very little attention. Because amino nitrogen compounds are important components of the average diet, the reactions of hypochlorite with amino compounds in the stomach were investigated. Stomach fluid was recovered from Sprague-Dawley rats that had been fasted for 48 hr and administered 4 mL deionized water. The chlorine demand of the stomach fluid was determined. An average volume-independent demand of 2.7 mg chlorine was measured. At doses below 40 mg/L chlorine reducing reactions appeared to account for reduction of all oxidizing species within 15 …

Morphological Aspects Of Seedling Establishment In Four Temperate Region Phorandendron Spp., Beverlee M. Ruhland
Morphological Aspects Of Seedling Establishment In Four Temperate Region Phorandendron Spp., Beverlee M. Ruhland
Dissertations and Theses
Four species of Phoradendron were examined for seedling morphology: P. bolleanum subsp. densum (on Juniperus), P. californicum (on Prosopis), P. juniperinum subsp. juniperinum (on Juniperus, P. villosum subsp. villosum (on Quercus). The main species used in the study was P. juniperinum, using the other species for comparison. The initial shoot(s) of P. juniperinum may develop from the epicotyl of the developing seedling, from adventitious buds which arise from a cushion of tissue, termed the haustorial cushion, formed beneath the holdfast, or from both positions. When shoots arise only from adventitious buds the original seedling remains attached in a lateral position, …
The Contribution Of The Lymph Hearts In Compensation For Acute Hypovolemic Stress In The Toad Bufo Marinus, Mark Baustian
The Contribution Of The Lymph Hearts In Compensation For Acute Hypovolemic Stress In The Toad Bufo Marinus, Mark Baustian
Dissertations and Theses
Currently published data on the role of the lymphatic system in amphibians are inadequate and contradictory. Estimates of the rate of formation of lymph and the role of the lymph hearts in returning this fluid to the circulation are not based on actual volume determinations but rather estimates derived from changes in hematocrit using published values of plasma and blood volume. The lymph hearts are known to be vital to the maintenance of normal fluid compartment physiology and to increase their rate of activity during episodes of hypovolemic stress. Yet, significant redistribution of body fluids following hemorrage appears to occur …
Nitrogen Limitation Of Phytoplankton Growth In An Oligotrophic Lake, Michael Patrick Mulvey
Nitrogen Limitation Of Phytoplankton Growth In An Oligotrophic Lake, Michael Patrick Mulvey
Dissertations and Theses
Blue Lake, Jefferson County, Oregon, has high summer surface phosphorus concentrations (ca. 30 ug/l) yet is oligotrophic (summer Secchi depth is 11 to 16 meters). Nutrient enrichment experiments done with 1000 1 polyethylene enclosures indicate nitrate limitation of phytoplankton growth. Basin morphology may be an important factor in nutrient cycling in this lake. The lake has a maximum depth of 95.7 meters with an average depth of 42.7 meters. The lake basin has steep sides with only 4% of the lake bottom less than 3.3 meters deep. of recent volcanic origin.
In contrast, Suttle Lake, which is immediately downstream from …

Propagation Of Two Southern Texas Shrubs By Stem Cuttings, Michael R. Heep, Robin S. Vora
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
We successfully used stem cuttings to propagate two native shrubs, brush holly (Xylosma flexuosa) and devil's claw. (Pisonia aculeata), which are rare in the Rio Grande floodplain of southern Texas. Roots grew on 100 percent of the cuttings that did not receive root-promoting substances. Rooting success decreased when synthetic root promoting substances or a nutrient solution was used. Key words: asexual propagation; native shrubs.

Comparison Of Preparative Techniques For Scanning Electron Microscopy Examination Of Soybean Seed Coats In Sectional View, Daniel M. Baker, Harry C, Minor, Merton F. Brown
Scanning Electron Microscopy
Various scanning electron microscopy preparative techniques have been used by researchers to examine sectional views of dry, mature soybean (Glycine~ CL.) Merr.) seed coats. Such previously employed techniques were utilized In our preliminary investigations of seed coat structure, but often yielded unacceptable preservation. Consequently, eight preparative techniques were evaluated In an effort to define conditions required to obtain consistently high quality preservation of soybean seed coats In sectional view. Of the eight procedures tested with the cultivar Williams 82, razor sections and mechanical fractures of dry seed coats yielded the poorest definition of anatomical features. Samples soaked In water prior …
Biochemical Variation Of The Desert Tortoise, Gopherus Agassizi, Randy Dean Jennings
Biochemical Variation Of The Desert Tortoise, Gopherus Agassizi, Randy Dean Jennings
Biology ETDs
Relationships among populations of the desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizi, were assessed using starch-gel electrophoresis. Concurrently, tortoises obtained for the electrophoretic study were used in a preliminary morphological analysis. Morphologically, males differed from females in the gular shape and anal scutes, front foot width, carapacial doming, and the posterior curvature of the carapace. Only anal notch depth differed among habitats for female tortoises, while differences in gular length, front foot width, anal notch depth and width, and carapacial flatness were detected among males. Differences in foot and gular shape may reflect their importance in male:male agonistic encounters. Shell shape differences between …
Long Term Effects Of Radiation And Combined Modalities On Mouse Lung, David P. Penney, Paul Van Houtte, Dietmar W. Siemann, Wayne A. Rosenkrans Jr., Philip Rubin, Robert A. Cooper Jr.
Long Term Effects Of Radiation And Combined Modalities On Mouse Lung, David P. Penney, Paul Van Houtte, Dietmar W. Siemann, Wayne A. Rosenkrans Jr., Philip Rubin, Robert A. Cooper Jr.
Scanning Electron Microscopy
The lung appears to be the major dose-limiting organ in radiation of the thorax. Early responses (<1 week) involve the type II pneumocyte and increased surfactant biosynthesis and secretion. Later changes, which appear to be related to the surfactant response, lead to classical radiation pneumonitis, which is often fatal. Animals which survive radiation pneumonitis develop progressive fibrosis, a late-appearing response, which reduces compliance and available air space, and is usually fatal. This study centers on the fine structural changes in the lungs of LAF1 mice, 63 weeks following various radiation exposures (5-13 Gy). Doses which are subthreshold in evoking surfactant and pneumonitic responses precipitate fibrosis and atelectasis by 63 weeks, and involve type II pneumocyte sloughing and degeneration. Of the two major deterrents to lung irradiation (pneumonitis and fibrosis), these results suggest that fibrosis always follows pneumonitis, but pneumonitis is not a necessary preliminary step to fibrosis. Bleomycin elicits several morphological alterations characteristic of radiation, and, when combined with the latter, appears to exacerbate radiation effects.
Characterization Of Small Metallic Clusters By Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy, M. Acheche, C. Colliex, P. Trebbia
Characterization Of Small Metallic Clusters By Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy, M. Acheche, C. Colliex, P. Trebbia
Scanning Electron Microscopy
Small spherical tin and gallium clusters (diameters in the range 2 to 80 nm), prepared with a liquid metal ion source, were analysed in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) by electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS). Both volume and surface plasmon excitations were investigated and their dependence on the cluster size interpreted by classical and quantum mechanical models. A blue shift of the volume plasmon energy with decreasing radius R of the cluster was clearly detected. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the peak, related to the damping of the volume plasmon excitation, showed a dependence in 1/R. …

Clonal Selection Of Sugar Cane For Texas And Louisiana From A Common Germplasm Pool, Stephen Kresovich, Richard D. Breaux
Faculty Publications
The sugar cane (a complex hybrid of Saccharum spp.) cultivar improvement program for the irrigated Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, initiated in 1961, has expanded greatly over the past 20 years. Initially, only 8 to 12 cultivars, selected from those previously released from commercial production in Louisiana or Florida, were screened annually for their production potential in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The current introduction and screening program is more comprehensive utilizing 1) all clones advanced from the first to the second line trials at the U. S. Sugarcane Laboratory at Houma, Louisiana; 2) the advanced "CP" assignments from …
