Effects Of Variation In Food Quality On The Breeding Territoriality Of The Male Anna's Hummindbird, Donald R. Powers Jan 1987

Effects Of Variation In Food Quality On The Breeding Territoriality Of The Male Anna's Hummindbird, Donald R. Powers

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Thirteen territorial male Anna’s Hummingbirds, Calypte anna, were observed during the 1981 and 1982 breeding seasons. Breeding territories were large, but size was not determined by energy availability. When a food source (sucrose solution in feeders) was present, the degree to which it was defended was a function of food quality. If a high-quality food source was absent, males did not exhibit the behaviors associated with defending a food source, but breeding territoriality remained intact. Territories were maintained for the entire breeding season even when food quality was varied. The lack of a relationship between the number of chases involving …

What Controls Tropical Reef Fish Populations: Recruitment Or Benthic Mortality? An Example In The Caribbean Reef Fish Haemulon Flavolineatum, M. J. Shulman, John C. Ogden Jan 1987

What Controls Tropical Reef Fish Populations: Recruitment Or Benthic Mortality? An Example In The Caribbean Reef Fish Haemulon Flavolineatum, M. J. Shulman, John C. Ogden

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Recruitment from a planktonic larval stage has been proposed to be an important factor in limiting populations of marine organisms, particularly tropical reef fishes. We monitored recruitment and population densities of juvenile size classes In French grunt Haemulon flavolineatum (Haemulidae) from October 1978 through December 1980 In a portion of Tague Bay, St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands. Within our study area, 95 % of new recruits settled onto the sand and seagrass lagoon floor and within a few weeks migrated to nearby reefs; the remaining 5'10 settled directly onto reef structures. Mean annual recruitment rate was 1.8 recruits per …

Influence Of Rufuging Consumers (Pikas: Ochotona Princeps) On Subalpine Meadow Vegetation, Nancy J. Huntly Jan 1987

Influence Of Rufuging Consumers (Pikas: Ochotona Princeps) On Subalpine Meadow Vegetation, Nancy J. Huntly

Biology Faculty Publications

Talus slopes in western North America frequently are bordered by vegetation that differs in biomass, cover, height, and species composition from vegetation located farther from talus. These areas are grazed by pikas (Ochotona princess, which nest in that talus. Foraging theory predicts that pikas will produce a gradient of grazing pressure, which could produce the observed vegetational zonation. In a subalpine meadow in west-central Colorado, pikas produced the predicted gradient of grazing pressure, along which plant groups varied clinally in abundance. The effects of pikas on talus-border vegetation were tested by excluding pikas from small plots at several distances from …

Arachnid Fauna In Three Central Florida Plant Communities, David T. Corey Jan 1987

Arachnid Fauna In Three Central Florida Plant Communities, David T. Corey

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Arachnids were collected in three plant communities on the University of Central Florida campus, beginning in May of 1983 and ending in March 1984. These sites were undisturbed communities: pond pine, sand pine scrub, and flatwoods. Pitfall traps and sweep nets were used to catch arachnids every other month.

A total of 2,657 arachnids were collected in pitfall traps and 4,022 in sweep nets. Spiders were the most numerous group, consisting of 87.5% of the individuals in pitfall traps and 100.0% in sweep nets. Forty-two scorpions, 41 pseudoscorpions, and 248 opilionids were captured on the ground surface.

Symbiosis Between Social Spiders And Yeast: The Role In Prey Attraction, William James Tietjen, L. Rao Ayyagari, George W. Uetz Jan 1987

Symbiosis Between Social Spiders And Yeast: The Role In Prey Attraction, William James Tietjen, L. Rao Ayyagari, George W. Uetz

Faculty Scholarship

A number of predatory animals use deception, including odors, signals, and bait-like body appendages or objects to lure prey (Alcock, 1984). Several spider species are known to emit chemical odors that mimic the sex attractants of certain noctuid or saturniid moths as a means of luring males to be captured (Tietjen and Rovner, 1982). Here we provide evidence that the social spider species, Mallos gregalis, uses a scented "bait" to attract prey. Our results indicate that this odor is produced by yeasts growing on the carcasses of previously fed-upon flies which these spiders incorporated into their webs.

Physiological Changes In Portulacaria Afra (L.) Jacq. During A Summer Drought And Rewatering, Lonnie J. Guralnick, Irwin P. Ting

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

The changes of titratable acidity, enzyme activity, water status, and pigment composition were studied in Portulacaria afra (L.) Jacq. during a normal summer drought and rewatering. Two groups of plants were grown outside under a clear plastic canopy with water stress initiated at 2-week intervals in May 1986. Drought resulted in a linear decrease of fresh weight for 80 days and there was no further fresh weight change for the next 65 days. Nocturnal CO(2) uptake remained measurable for 83 days. Cessation of exogenous CO(2) uptake corresponded to the point where the pressure potential (Psi(p)) became zero. Ribulose-1, 5-bisphosphate (RuBP) …

New And Corrected Records Of The Flora Of Nebraska, Steven B. Rolfsmeier, Robert B. Kaul, David M. Sutherland

Biology Faculty Publications

New distributional data are provided for 27 species of vascular plants in Nebraska, eight newly recorded as growing wild in the State. The record of one species previously attributed to the State is shown to be based upon misidentified specimens, the range of another is shown to be much more restricted in Nebraska than previously reported, and nomenclature is corrected for two species.

Seasonal Variation In Serum Testosterone Of Immature Sea Turtles In Central Florida, Lawrence K. Luepschen Jan 1987

Seasonal Variation In Serum Testosterone Of Immature Sea Turtles In Central Florida, Lawrence K. Luepschen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A yearlong hormonal study of immature populations of loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) and green turtles (Chelonia mydas) inhabiting the Indian River in Central Florida, USA, provided information about the relationship between serum testosterone levels and life history habits. By use of a specific radioimmunoassay, testosterone levels of both species were found to remain constant throughout the year with only a slight increase in the warmer months. Adrenal production of steroids in response to stress does not contribute significantly to overall testosterone levels may be reduced for turtles held in captivity. Testosterone levels indicate that the sex ratios of both species …

The Identification Of The Threatened Southeastern Shrew Using Multivariate Statistical Techniques, Thomas M. Padgett, Roger K. Everton, Robert K. Rose Jan 1987

The Identification Of The Threatened Southeastern Shrew Using Multivariate Statistical Techniques, Thomas M. Padgett, Roger K. Everton, Robert K. Rose

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The threatened subspecies of the southeastern shrew, Sorex longirostris fisheri, is endemic to the Great Dismal Swamp of southeastern Virginia. Previous studies based on discriminant analysis of external measurements determined that intergrades with the upland form, Sorex l. longirostris, exist along the periphery of the Swamp. To better discriminate among these populations, a study of cranial morphology was initiated. Fifteen cranial measurements were taken, using 59 specimens of Sorex collected previously form southeastern Virginia, including the Dismal Swamp. Both Principal Component and Cluster Analyses revealed no significant cranial variation or morphometric patterns within the specimens examined, but a …

The Relationship Of Upwelling To Mussel Production In The Rias On The Western Coast Of Spain, Jack O. Blanton, Kenneth R. Tenore, F. Castillejo, Larry P. Atkinson, Franklin B. Schwing, Amy Lavin Jan 1987

The Relationship Of Upwelling To Mussel Production In The Rias On The Western Coast Of Spain, Jack O. Blanton, Kenneth R. Tenore, F. Castillejo, Larry P. Atkinson, Franklin B. Schwing, Amy Lavin

CCPO Publications

We have calculated an upwelling index for each month over a 17-year period (1969-1985) for a point off the western coast of Spain. We interpret April through September values of the index to indicate the flux of nitrate-rich water in the Spanish Rias. The index representing the 6-month upwelling series has been correlated with an index representing the conditions of mussels grown during that season on rafts in Ria de Arosa. Two seasons represent extreme upwelling conditions over the 17-year sampling period: 1977 when the upwelling index was the highest, and 1983 when it was the lowest. A comparison of …

Distribution And Current Status Of The Threatened Dismal Swamp Southeastern Shrew, Sorex Longirostris Fisheri, Robert K. Rose, Roger K. Everton, Thomas M. Padgett Jan 1987

Distribution And Current Status Of The Threatened Dismal Swamp Southeastern Shrew, Sorex Longirostris Fisheri, Robert K. Rose, Roger K. Everton, Thomas M. Padgett

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The Dismal Swamp southeastern shrew, Sorex longirostris fisheri, was given "Threatened" status by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in 1986 because of its limited distribution and the potential threat of interbreeding with the nearby upland subspecies, Sorex l. longirostris. Known from about 20 specimens collected before 1980 and a few dozen taken since then, "fisheri" seems to have morphologically diverged from the smaller upland "longirostris" in association with the development of the Dismal Swamp. The detection of southeastern shrews that are intermediate in size between the two subspecies, coupled with the location of these collection sites on …

Reproductive Structure Of Lithocarpus Sensu Lato (Fagaceae): Cymules And Fruits, Robert B. Kaul Jan 1987

Reproductive Structure Of Lithocarpus Sensu Lato (Fagaceae): Cymules And Fruits, Robert B. Kaul

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Seventy-three species were examined for structural and developmental details of the cymules and fruits. The cymules bear one to seven or more flowers and are subtended by one to nine or more bracteoles. Generally, the number of flowers and bracteoles in the pistillate cymules is the same or less than in the staminate ones. Some of the latter have an inner set of bracteoles that could be homologous to the pistillate cupule. Scales are present at anthesis on the cupules of all species examined, but in some species they fail to enlarge, are torn or disintegrate, or fall away as …

Microsurgical Fertilization Of Mammalian Eggs: An Assessment Of Clinical Utilization, Susan E. Lanzendorf Jan 1987

Microsurgical Fertilization Of Mammalian Eggs: An Assessment Of Clinical Utilization, Susan E. Lanzendorf

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Microsurgical fertilization is the technique in which a spermatozoon or sperm nucleus is injected into the cytoplasm of an egg. To establish a foundation for the use of microsurgical fertilization as a means of treating infertility, this study evaluated the procedure in hamster and human eggs. Hamster sperm nuclei were microinjected into hamster eggs to determine the rate of abnormal fertilization and to ultrastructurally assess cellular damage by transmission electron microscopy. Hamster eggs were also injected with human spermatozoa obtained from fertile and infertile men to evaluate the fertilizing potential of the sperm cells. In addition, human eggs donated by …

Behavioral Responses Of Drosophila Robusta And Drosophila Tripunctata In Response To A Temperature And Humidity Gradient, Ellen E. Hostert Jan 1987

Behavioral Responses Of Drosophila Robusta And Drosophila Tripunctata In Response To A Temperature And Humidity Gradient, Ellen E. Hostert

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Temperature may be a major factor limiting distribution and abundance of species in the wild. It may be the main influence determining the seasonal abundances of two native species, Drosophila robusta and D. tripunctata, both of which have been collected from a lowland forest . Survival studies indicate that D. tripunctata does not survive as well at high temperatures (27 and 30°c) as does D. robusta (Seager, unpublished data). This suggests that the responses of these two species when placed in a temperature and humidity gradient may be responsible for the difference i n seasonal abundances noted by Jennings et …

Changes In The Protein Composition Of The Female Inflorescence Of Zea Mays L. During Early Development, Catherine Thompson Howard Jan 1987

Changes In The Protein Composition Of The Female Inflorescence Of Zea Mays L. During Early Development, Catherine Thompson Howard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Many features of plant development illustrate the plasticity of plant systems. Committment [sic] to one developmental state need not be permanent; many cells can exhibit totipotency in culture, and the normal course of differentiation can be altered at many points by environmental influences. Developmental controls in plant systems can be regarded as largely exogenous to the cell, and continuously maintained. One of the more difficult problems of developmental botany has been the switch from vegetative to reproductive growth of an apical meristem, and the control of morphogenesis of the inflorescence. Postlethwait and Nelson (1964) suggested that the development of the …

Vegetation and soils were sampled in 22 old fields ranging in age from 1 to 56 yr since abandonment. Soil nitrogen concentration increased significantly with field age. Vegetation cover, total aboveground plant biomass, and litter cover increased significantly with soil nitrogen. Light penetration to the soil surface was negatively correlated with total plant biomass. Field age and soil nitrogen concentration were used as independent variables in simple regression and partial correlation analyses to determine the relative importance of such time—dependent processes as dispersals vs. the availability of a limiting resource (nitrogen) as predictors of patterns in species richness or the …
