Iodine and Cl are enriched in soils in the vicinity of the Magmont and Buick lead mines near Bixby, southeastern Missouri. The enrichments, up to 5.6 ppm I and 305 ppm Cl, are against regional background of 1.26 ppm I and 41 ppm Cl. The area of highest I and Cl is thought to reflect a zone of base metal sulphide mineralization occurring about 400 m below the surface. Iodine and Cl are also enriched in soils immediately adjacent to a tailings pond, hence these elements would appear to be leached from this source. A zone of enhanced I values …

Photoperiod Effects On 2n Pollen Production, Response To Anther Culture, And Net Photosynthesis Of A Diplandrous Clone Of Solanum Phureja, Henry R. Owen, R. E. Veilleux, F. L. Haynes, K. G. Haynes Jan 1988

Photoperiod Effects On 2n Pollen Production, Response To Anther Culture, And Net Photosynthesis Of A Diplandrous Clone Of Solanum Phureja, Henry R. Owen, R. E. Veilleux, F. L. Haynes, K. G. Haynes

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Flow-cytometric analysis of pollen samples obtained from Solanum phureja, clone PP5, grown under 10, 14, and 18 hour photoperiods at the Southeastern Plant Environment Laboratories of North Carolina State University yielded two populations of pollen based on size parameters. These populations corresponded to pollen separation based on propidium iodide staining of DNA. Anther culture response from plants grown under 14 and 18 hour photo periods for 8, I 0, 12, and 14 weeks was greatest from 8 week old plants grown under a 14 hour photoperiod. Net photosynthesis was significantly higher for plants grown under a 10 hour photoperiod than …

Variability For Critical Photoperiod For Tuberization And Tuber Yield Among Monoploid, Anther-Derived Genotypes Of Solanum Phureja, Henry R. Owen, R. E. Veilleux, F. L. Haynes, K. G. Haynes Jan 1988

Variability For Critical Photoperiod For Tuberization And Tuber Yield Among Monoploid, Anther-Derived Genotypes Of Solanum Phureja, Henry R. Owen, R. E. Veilleux, F. L. Haynes, K. G. Haynes

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Monoploid genotypes (2n = x = 12), derived by anther culture of a diplandrous (2n pollen-producing) clone of Solanum phureja Juz. & Buk., a South American diploid potato species, were examined for their use in germplasm development. Nine monoploid genotypes and the anther-donor genotype were grown in three chambers (10-, 14-, and 18-hr daylengths) to examine the effect of photoperiod on tuber yield and to determine the variability for critical photoperiod for tuberization. Significant differences were found among the monoploid genotypes for tuber weight and tuber number. Longer photoperiod treatments decreased and delayed tuberization. Axillary tuber formation from single-node cuttings …

Biological Sciences

Fossil bones collected in the latest Miocene (= either late Clarendonian or early Hemphillian North American Land IvIammal Age), San Mateo Formation, near Oceanside, San Diego County, California, C. S.A., belong to a single specimen of the genus Makaira, species undetermined, and is part of the San Luis Rey River Local Fauna. For the genus, this represents the fifth discovery in fossil deposits bordering or within the Pacific Ocean region, and the third discovery in southern California, The specimen is within the known geochronological distribution of the genus (Late Miocene to Recent), provides further evidence that the coastal palaeoclimate of …

A New Method Of Calculating The Wing Area Of Bats, B.R. Blood, Donald A. Mcfarlane Jan 1988

A New Method Of Calculating The Wing Area Of Bats, B.R. Blood, Donald A. Mcfarlane

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Wing area is a parameter important to any study of chiropteran flight behaviour (Struthsaker 1961 ; Findley et al. 1972 ; Lawlor 1973), because it is a necessary component for the calculation of aspect ratio and wing loading. Bats possessing high aspect ratio wings usually display swift and steady flight, often at high altitudes. Bats that possess low aspect ratio wings usually display slower, more manouverable flight and often fly at lower altitudes (Findley 1972 ; Findley et al. 1972 ; Mortensen 1977 ; Vaughan 1970). However, despite the importance of wing area, no-one has published a simple, yet accurate, …

Field Metabolic Rate And Food Consumption By Free-Living Anna's Hummingbirds (Calypte Anna), Donald R. Powers, Kenneth A. Nagy Jan 1988

Field Metabolic Rate And Food Consumption By Free-Living Anna's Hummingbirds (Calypte Anna), Donald R. Powers, Kenneth A. Nagy

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

We measured C02 production and water flux using doubly labeled water in wild Anna's hummingbirds living in the Santa Ana Mountains of Southern California during autumn (September) of 1981. The estimated field metabolic rate (FMR) of a hummingbird maintaining a constant body mass (mean 4.48 g) is about 32 kl/day, which is 5.2 times basal metabolic rate (BMR). Metabolic rates during daylight hours were about 6.8 X BMR, less than one-half that expected for an Anna's hummingbird in continuous hovering flight. We estimated nighttime metabolism to be near 2.1 X BMR, which is about what would be expected for a …

Variation In Female Somatic Condition And Its Relationship To Reproduction In The Sailfin Molly, Poecilia Latipinna (Pisces: Poeciliidae), Richard Eugene Smith

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Seasonal and gestational variation in the somatic and reproductive condition of females was determined for two east-central Florida populations of the livebearing fish Poecilia latipinna. Females were sampled monthly between January 1985 and January 1986 at Badge Station (BDGST) and Titusville Ditch (TDTCH) study sites. In addition, collections were made at approximately 8 day intervals in April and August. Somatic condition was determined by calculating index values for dry weight (somatic tissue minus water), lipid, and protein from overall regression equations relating these components to female body size. Significant seasonal variation in somatic condition existed within the two study sites. …

New distributional data are given for 54 species of vascular plants in Nebraska. Twenty are newly recorded for the State. 23 are shown to be more widespread than was previously known, seven are shown to have more restricted ranges than previously reported. the records of one species attributed to the State are shown to be based on misidentifications. and the presence in the State of three species collected long ago is confirmed by recent collections.

Historical Notes On Collections And Taxonomy Of Penstemon Haydenii S. Wats. (Blowout Penstemon), Nebraska's Only Endemic Plant Species, David M. Sutherland Jan 1988

Historical Notes On Collections And Taxonomy Of Penstemon Haydenii S. Wats. (Blowout Penstemon), Nebraska's Only Endemic Plant Species, David M. Sutherland

Biology Faculty Publications

Penstemon haydenii was originally described in 1891 by Sereno Watson and was named for its first collector, the geologist and explorer Ferdinand V. Hayden, who probably collected it in the late summer of 1857 in the" Sand Hills of Loup Fork," Nebraska. The Hayden specimen which Watson saw in the Gray Herbarium at Harvard University had evidently been labeled with an incorrect location. Watson did not base his description on that early specimen but upon a more complete specimen, also in the Gray Herbarium, taken by Herbert J. Webber in Thomas County in 1891; so the Webber specimen, not the …

Age, Growth, And Movement Patterns Of The Atlantic Stingray, Dasyatis Sabina, In A Florida Coastal Lagoon System, Thomas Henry Schmid

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Age, growth rates, and patterns of movement were studied in the Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina, in the Indian River lagoon system in east central Florida. Age was estimated using the growth rings on the vertebral centrum and tretacycline marking. Tetracycline injections produced clear readable rings in all pups, but failed to be incorporated into the centra of adults. Females possess more centrum rings than males, but annual periodicity could not be verified. Growth rates were determined from aquarium held pups and adults and from tagged and recaptured animals. Males appeared to reach maturity in about two years, females in slightly …

Effect Of Biotin Limitation On The Conversion Of Xylose To Ethanol And Xylitol By Pachysolen Tannophilus And Candida Guilliermondii, Hung Lee, Audrey L. Atkin, Maria F.S. Barbosa, Delbert R. Dorscheid, Henry Schneider Jan 1988

Effect Of Biotin Limitation On The Conversion Of Xylose To Ethanol And Xylitol By Pachysolen Tannophilus And Candida Guilliermondii, Hung Lee, Audrey L. Atkin, Maria F.S. Barbosa, Delbert R. Dorscheid, Henry Schneider

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The relative amount of ethanol and xylitol accumulated in aerobic batch cultures of Pachysolen tannophilus and Candida guilliermondii on D-xylose depended on the extent of limitation by biotin. In high biotin media P. tannophilus favored ethanol production over that of xylitol while C. guilliermondii favored xylitol formation. However, as the extent of biotin limitation increased, the ratio of ethanol to xylitol produced by both organisms increased. The results are of interest in efforts to control such ratios.

Cupular Structure In Paleotropical Castanopsis (Fagaceae), Robert B. Kaul Jan 1988

Cupular Structure In Paleotropical Castanopsis (Fagaceae), Robert B. Kaul

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

The structure and some developmental aspects of the cupules of 22 species of paleotropical Castanopsis are discussed and illustrated. Some species have cupules massively invested with strong, sharp spines, but others are less spiny, and some are nearly smooth. Most cupular armament results from spines produced axillary to the valvular scales and basally adnate to them. Columns of scales straddling the sutures between the cupular valves do not become spines, but the numerous scales elsewhere on the valves become somewhat spiny with age. Dehiscence in the spiny-valved species is mostly along the sutures. The smooth cupules of some species have …

Dna Sequencing, Lyle R. Middendorf, John A. Brumbaugh Jan 1988

Dna Sequencing, Lyle R. Middendorf, John A. Brumbaugh

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

To sequence long strands of DNA, cloned strands having lengths longer than 100 bases are, in one embodiment, marked on one end with biotin. These strands are divided into 4 aliquots and each aliquot: (1) is uniquely chemically treated to randomly terminate the strands at the non-biotinylated end at a selected type of base; and (2) is moved continuously by electrophoresis through a different one of four identical channels. In the one embodiment, the strands are randomly terminated at a selected base type and they are moved into avidin, which due to high affinity, combines with the biotin marked ends …

Fish Aid: The Lake Mead Fertilization Project, Richard Axler, Larry Paulson, Peter Vaux, Patrick Sollberger, Donald H. Baepler

Publications (WR)

Sport fishing at Lake Mead in Nevada and Arizona is a resource valued at nearly $100 million per year to southern Nevada. During the past two decades, salmonids, mostly trout, have disappeared entirely, the largemouth bass catch has drastically declined despite greater fishing pressure, and the condition factors for striped bass have steadily deteriorated. It appears that a major reduction in phosphorus loading caused by the upstream impoundment of the Colorado River to form Lake Powell in 1963 and advanced wastewater treatment removal of phosphorus from domestic wastewater inflows in 1981 are the principal factors responsible for decreased production at …

Changes In The Morphometry Of Las Vegas Wash And The Impact On Water Quality, Richard A. Roline, James J. Sartoris, U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation Jan 1988

Changes In The Morphometry Of Las Vegas Wash And The Impact On Water Quality, Richard A. Roline, James J. Sartoris, U.S. Bureau Of Reclamation

Publications (WR)

Las Vegas Wash, a natural wash east of Las Vegas, Nevada, carries stormwater, groundwater drainage, and sewage effluent from two sewage treatment plants to Lake Mead. Over 80 percent of the normal discharge of approximately 3.4 m3/s (120 ft3/s) consists of effluent from the City of Las Vegas and Clark County sewage treatment plants. Beginning in the 1950s, a large wetland area developed along the wash that supported waterfowl populations and contributed to some water quality transformations. Heavy rains and subsequent flooding in the area in 1983 and 1984 resulted in erosion and channelization that greatly …

Phenotypic Assortment In Tetrahymena Thermophila: Assortment Kinetics Of Antibiotic-Resistance Markers, Tsa, Death, And The Highly Amplified Rdna Locus., E. Virginia Merriam, P.J. Bruns

Biology Faculty Works

Phenotypic assortment in Tetrahymena thermophila results from random distribution of alleles during amitotic division of the macronucleus. The rate of assortment is dependent on input ratio and the number of assorting units. The assortment of the antibiotic resistance markers Chx, Mpr and gal was determined and is consistent for each with the model of 45 assorting chromosomes. The gene tsA (previously ts-1) shows normal assortment, in contrast to previous reports. A mutation in the highly amplified ribosomal locus (rdnA2) assorts as if present at only 45 copies. Death of clones occurred at a rate consistent with assortment for a single …
