P. ro-queforti were determined as dominant species in all samples.

Composition And Change Of Maritime Hammock Flora In East-Central Florida After 20 Years, Donald John Spence Jan 1998

Composition And Change Of Maritime Hammock Flora In East-Central Florida After 20 Years, Donald John Spence

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The vegetation of eight east-central Florida maritime hammocks studied in 1997 were compared to similar data collected over 20 years ago. Study sites are located in the northern half of the Indian River Lagoon system mostly within Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The upland hammock vegetation throughout the state generally has an oak-palm association, but here these species dominate. Results show that sabal palm, live oak, laurel oak, and pignut hickory, the four dominant tree species in 1976-77, are still dominant in 1997; however, there has been a loss in tree species richness. Most shrub species …

Chondrocranial Morphology Of Leptodactylus Larvae (Leptodactylidae: Leptodactylinae): Its Utility In Phylogenetic Reconstruction, Peter M. Larson, Rafael O. De Sá Jan 1998

Chondrocranial Morphology Of Leptodactylus Larvae (Leptodactylidae: Leptodactylinae): Its Utility In Phylogenetic Reconstruction, Peter M. Larson, Rafael O. De Sá

Biology Faculty Publications

Chondrocranial morphology of leptodactylid frogs is scarcely known and has not been completely described for any species of Leptodactylus. We describe the diversity of chondrocranial morphology in the genus Leptodactylus based on the analysis of 22 species, representing the four species groups: the fuscus Group, ocellatus Group, melanonotus Group, and pentadactylus Group. Furthermore, 26 characters are identified and used in a phylogenetic analysis. The phylogenetic analysis using Physalaemus, Crossodactylus, and Hylodes as outgroups suggests two monophyletic clades within Leptodactylus: the melanonotus-ocellatus clade and the pentadactylusfuscus clade. However, it does not support the monophyly of the species groups as currently recognized …

Genetic Variation Within And Among Populations Of Florida Burrowing Owls (Athene Cunicularia Floridana), Wendy T. Denton Jan 1998

Genetic Variation Within And Among Populations Of Florida Burrowing Owls (Athene Cunicularia Floridana), Wendy T. Denton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

This study employed DNA Polymerase Chain Reaction (PGR) and Single-Stranded Conformation Polymorphisms (SSCP) on a mitochondrial control region target to assess population structure and possible gene flow in the Florida Burrowing Owl (Athene cunicularia floridana), a Florida Species of Special Concern. Although widespread in Florida, Burrowing Owls occur at low densities in semi-isolated populations that are susceptible to extirpation from human development and the demographic consequences of small population size. To better manage these populations, there is a need for data on the population genetic structure of the Florida Burrowing Owl. Therefore, I acquired DNA from Burrowing Owls …

Evaluation Of Coverboards For Sampling Salamanders In South Georgia, Charles Michael Houze Jr. Jan 1998

Evaluation Of Coverboards For Sampling Salamanders In South Georgia, Charles Michael Houze Jr.

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Salamanders are important components of many forested communities. However, their fossorial habits and seasonality often make them difficult to sample. The use of artificial coverboards (coverboards) is a relatively new and little-studied technique for monitoring the terrestrial activity of salamanders Coverboards are designed to simulate fallen tree limbs and logs, and to provide a moist refuge for forest salamanders. Despite several studies, questions remain concerning the value of coverboards. Therefore, I conducted an experiment in 1996-1997 to determine whether coverboards are as effective for sampling salamanders as searching natural cover objects such as logs and branches. Using a paired design, …

Use Of Baculovirus As Expression Vector In Biotechnology, Zihni Demi̇rbağ, A. Osman Beldüz, İsmail Demi̇r

Turkish Journal of Biology

Variuos viral, bacterial, plant and animal proteins which are important for medicinal, industrial and agricultural aspects, have been synhesized via expression vector systems have great importance in biotechnology. Baculoviruses, used as a good model system in molecular biology studies, a biological control agent in agriculture and an expression vector for synthesis of important proteins, opened up a significant period for recombinant DNA technology and protein production. Desired foreign genes, code for various products such as drug, toxin and nutrient substances, can be replaced with viral genes which are not essasial for replication of baculovirus in cell culture. Priority and advantages …

Recent Developments In Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, Mahmut Tör Jan 1998

Recent Developments In Molecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, Mahmut Tör

Turkish Journal of Biology

Generally, plants are affected by biotic and abiotic elicitors in nature. These elicitors are recognized by receptors on the plasma membrane and the information is passed to the responsible part of the cell via a signal transduction pathway. In terms of plant-pathogen interaction, the products of avr genes of the pathogens are recognized by the products of R genes of the host plant. Following recognition, the other genes, including kinases, in the cascade are phosphorylated and the defence mechanisms of the plant are activated. As a result, the plant cell commits suicide and the growth of the pathogen is restricted. …

A Comparision Of The Right And Left Hippocampus In Therabbit Brain In Terms Of Cell Density, Hayri Genç

Turkish Journal of Biology

The aim of this study was to investigate the structural asymmetry between the hemispheres by comparing the number of pyramidal cells in the right dorsal hippocampus with left dorsal hippocampus in the rabbit brain. Six adult domestic New Zeland rabbits were used in experiments. All animals were perfused intracardially with neutral formaline (10 %) under deep aneasthesia. The serial frontal sections were stained with thionin. The rostro-caudal level of these sections were determined by using a stereotaxic atlas of the rabbit brain. The number of pyramidal neurons was determined by counting identifiable neurons which had distict nucleus and nucleolus. The …

Effects Of Salt And Exogenous Putrescine On Seed Germination And Earlyseedling Growth Of Helianthus Annuusl. Var. Santafe, Fatma Teki̇n, Suna Bozcuk

Turkish Journal of Biology

Effects of salt (NaCl) and putrescine (Put.) and various combinations of these (salt+Put.) on germination and some early growth parameters of sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L. var. Santafe) plants, grown under the controlled conditions, were investigated. Salt was used in 3 different con-centrations (50, 100, 200mM) and also, Put. was applied in 3 levels (0.01, 1, 2 mM). The salt treat-ment alone inhibited or delayed the seed germination, depending on concentration. Furthermore, some growth parameters (length of radicle, fresh and dry weights) studied in germination period were adversely affected by salt. In the treatment alone of Put., regardless of the …

Biology Faculty Articles

We examined the density, size and species distribution of groupers in three habitats on an inshore-to-offshore transect across Elbow Reef, Florida Keys: high-relief spur-and-groove (4–9 m depth), relict spur-and-groove (10–20 m), and deep fore reef slope (21–30 m). Physical relief was greatest in the high-relief spur-and-groove (up to 3 m), lowest in the relict spur-and-groove habitat (30%). There were significant differences in the density, size, and species distribution of groupers among the three habitats. Graysby, Epinephelus cruentatus, was numerically dominant, constituting 82–91% of individual observed. Black grouper, Mycteroperca bonaci, and Nassau grouper, E. striatus, were more abundant in high to …

Comparison Of Grouper Assemblages In Northern Areas Of The Wider Caribbean: A Preliminary Assessment, Emily F. Schmitt Lavin, Robert D. Sluka, Kathleen M. Sullivan-Sealey

Biology Faculty Articles

Groupers (Pisces: Serranidae) are important top-level predators in wider Caribbean, but have experienced significant exploitation, resulting in declines in abundance, size, spawning aggregations, and changes in species composition. Larger groupers are particularly vulnerable to intense fishing because of their longevity, slow growth, delayed reproduction, and aggregate spawning. Marine fishery reserves (MFR), areas permanently closed to consumptive use, offer a viable means to protect grouper resources. This study reports on fishery-independent surveys of groupers in four regions of the tropical western Atlantic during 1995 - 1997: Florida Keys, central Bahamas, southeastern Cuba, and Dominican Republic. The regions surveyed included two national …

Parque National del Este is the second largest protected area in the Dominican Republic, comprising 110 km2 of terrestrial habitats located in the southeastern Dominican Republic. Established in 1975, the park delineation did not include the adjacent marine area, despite its long history of commercial fisheries. Since 1994, several U.S. and Dominican partner organizations have conducted scientific investigations of the marine resources of the area. This paper provides data on the status of snapper and groupers reef assemblages and finfish fisheriescollected during 1995 1997. Methods used in the study included: 1) visual transects (20 m x 5 m) of predatory …

A Developmental Study Of The Nmda Receptor, Katherine M. Flynn Jan 1998

A Developmental Study Of The Nmda Receptor, Katherine M. Flynn

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The N-methyl-D-aspartate type of glutamate receptor (NMDAR) is involved in the regulation of many neural functions, including neuroendocrine modulation of the vertebrate brain-pituitary-gonad axis. We have used a freshwater teleost, the platyfish (Xiphophorus maculatus), to document age- and gender-specific variations in NMDAR properties. We first localized immunoreactive (ir-) NMDAR in male and female platyfish brain at four stages of the lifespan. Distribution was limited to cells of the nucleus olfactoretinalis (NOR), a gonadotropin releasing hormone-containing nucleus. The number of ir-NMDAR cells was increased in pubescent and mature females when compared to immature and senescent animals. In …

Nodule Organogenesis And Symbiotic Mutants Of The Model Legume Lotus Japonicus, Krzysztof Szczyglowski, Robert S. Shaw, Judith Wopereis, Sue Copeland, Dirk Hamburger, Beth Kasiborski, Frank B. Dazzo, Frans J. De Bruijn

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

A detailed microscopical analysis of the morphological features that distinguish different developmental stages of nodule organogenesis in wild-type Lotus japonicus ecotype Gifu B-129-S9 plants was performed, to provide the necessary framework for the evaluation of altered phenotypes of L. japonicus symbiotic mutants. Subsequently, chemical ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutagenesis of L. japonicus was carried out. The analysis of approximately 3,000 M1 plants and their progeny yielded 20 stable L. japonicus symbiotic variants, consisting of at least 14 different symbiosis- associated loci or complementation groups. Moreover, a mutation affecting L. japonicus root development was identified that also conferred a hypernodulation response when …

A Novel Thin Film Transistor Using Double Amorphous Silicon Active Layer, Jong Hyuni Choi, Chang-Soo Kim, Byung Cheon Lim, Jin Jang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have fabricated a novel low off-state leakage current thin-film transistor (TFT) using a chlorine incorporated amorphous silicon [a-Si:H(:Cl)] and amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) stacked active layer, in which conduction channel is formed in a-Si:H and a-Si:H(:Cl) is photo-insensitive material. The off-state photo-leakage current of the a-Si:H(:Cl)/a-Si:H TFT is much lower than that a conventional a-Si:H TFT.

Root Growth Dependence On Soil Temperature For Opuntia Ficus-Indica: Influences Of Air Temperature And A Doubled Co2 Concentration, Philippa M. Drennan

Biology Faculty Works

1. Root elongation as a function of soil temperature was determined for the CAM succulent Opuntia ficus-indica, under three different day/night air temperatures (15 °C/5 °C, 25 °C/15 °C and 35 °C/25 °C) and an ambient (360 μmol mol-1) vs a doubled CO2 concentration (720 μmol mol-1) at 25 °C/15 °C, the optimum temperature for net CO2 uptake. 2. Root elongation occurred at soil temperatures from 12 °C (at 15 °C/5 °C) to 43 °C (at 35 °C/25 °C) with optimum temperatures of 27-30 °C, similar to other CAM succulents and consistent with the distribution of this shallow-rooted species in …

Trophic Ecology Of Native And Introduced Catfishes In The Tidal James River, Virginia, Louis Fairfax Chandler Jan 1998

Trophic Ecology Of Native And Introduced Catfishes In The Tidal James River, Virginia, Louis Fairfax Chandler

Theses and Dissertations

Species introductions have been linked to the decline of native taxa, and in many cases have resulted in the elimination of native species in both terrestrial and aquatic systems throughout the United States. In aquatic systems, a particular threat is the introduction of large piscivorous fish that may alter the native fish community structure. For example, introductions of large ictalurids such as blue catfish, (lctalurus furcatus), and flathead catfish, (Pylodictus olivaris), into coastal Virginia rivers, including the James River twenty years ago have resulted in the establishment of these large, predatory fishes.

This study described the trophic ecology of four …

Locating A Mate In 3d: The Case Of Temora Longicornis, Michael H. Doall, Sean Colin, J. Rudi Strickler, Jeannette Yen

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Using laser optics to illuminate high–resolution video–recordings, we revealed behavioural mechanisms through which males of the calanoid copepod species Temora longicornis locate females. Males of T. longicornis swam at significantly faster speeds than females along more sinuous routes, possibly reflecting adaptations to increase encounter with females. Upon approaching within 2 mm (i.e. two bodylengths) of a female's swimming path, males accelerated to significantly higher pursuit speeds. Pursuit trajectories closely traced the trajectories of females, suggesting that males were following detectable trails created by swimming females. Males of T. longicornis detected female trails up to at least 10 s old, and …

Roles Of Dnak And Rpos In Starvation-Induced Thermotolerance Of Escherichia Coli, David Rockabrand, Kevin Livers, Tess Austin, Robyn Kaiser, Debra Jensen, Richard Burgess, Paul H. Blum Jan 1998

Roles Of Dnak And Rpos In Starvation-Induced Thermotolerance Of Escherichia Coli, David Rockabrand, Kevin Livers, Tess Austin, Robyn Kaiser, Debra Jensen, Richard Burgess, Paul H. Blum

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

DnaK is essential for starvation-induced resistance to heat, oxidation, and reductive division in Escherichia coli. Studies reported here indicate that DnaK is also required for starvation-induced osmotolerance, catalase activity, and the production of the RpoS-controlled Dps (PexB) protein. Because these dnaK mutant phenotypes closely resemble those of rpoS (o38) mutants, the relationship between DnaK and RpoS was evaluated directly during growth and starvation at 30°C in strains with genetically altered DnaK content. A starvation-specific effect of DnaK on RpoS abundance was observed. During carbon starvation, DnaK deficiency reduced RpoS levels threefold, while DnaK excess increased RpoS levels …

Molecular Characterization Of The Α-Glucosidase Gene (Mala) From The Hyperthermophilic Archaeon Sulfolobus Solfataricus, Michael Rolfsmeier, Cynthia Haseltine, Elisabetta Bini, Amy Clark, Paul H. Blum Jan 1998

Molecular Characterization Of The Α-Glucosidase Gene (Mala) From The Hyperthermophilic Archaeon Sulfolobus Solfataricus, Michael Rolfsmeier, Cynthia Haseltine, Elisabetta Bini, Amy Clark, Paul H. Blum

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Acidic hot springs are colonized by a diversity of hyperthermophilic organisms requiring extremes of temperature and pH for growth. To clarify how carbohydrates are consumed in such locations, the structural gene (malA) encoding the major soluble α-glucosidase (maltase) and flanking sequences from Sulfolobus solfataricus were cloned and characterized. This is the first report of an α-glucosidase gene from the archaeal domain. malA is 2,083 bp and encodes a protein of 693 amino acids with a calculated mass of 80.5 kDa. It is flanked on the 5’ side by an unusual 1-kb intergenic region. Northern blot analysis of the …

Chondrocranial Anatomy And Skeletogenesis In Dendrobates Auratus, Rafael O. De Sá, Shannon Hill

Biology Faculty Publications

The larval chondrocranium and visceral skeleton of Dendrobates auratus ls described and compared with those of other dendrobatids. Four characters, i.e. lack of fusion between orbital cartilages and otic capsules, wide processus muscularis palatoquadrati, lack of processus pseudopterygoideus, and lack of processus anterolateralis hyalis, represent derived conditions for Dendrobates within Dendrobatidae. Cranial and postcranial ossification sequences are reported for D. auratus and Epipedobates tricolor. Skeletogenesis is earlier in E. tricolor, but the overall pattern of ossification is similar in the two species.

Host Plant Alters The Shape Of The Functional Response Of An Aphid Predator (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Frank J. Messina, J. B. Hanks

Biology Faculty Publications

The response of the lady beetle Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (L.) to the density of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), was measured in petri dish arenas as well as on plants with divergent leaf architectures. Logistic regression was used to distinguish the shape of the functional response (type II or III), and nonlinear least-squares regression was used to estimate attack coefficients (a) and handling times (Th). In dishes, the behavior of both beetle larvae and adults closely conformed to a type II response. Estimates of a and Th on whole plants were considerably different from those obtained from dishes, and …

Determination Of Rates And Patterns Of Recombination At The Maize Red Color (R1) Locus, William R. Dietrich Jan 1998

Determination Of Rates And Patterns Of Recombination At The Maize Red Color (R1) Locus, William R. Dietrich

Theses and Dissertations

Homologous recombination has been studied in many plant and animal systems. In maize, most recombination occurs intragenically. The current study assessed the frequency and location of meiotic recombination at the maize red color (r1) gene. Three independent mutant (colorless seed) alleles derived from the colored seed allele, R-sc:124, were made heterozygous with the colored plant allele, r-r:n142. Each mutant resulted from the insertion of a Dissociation (Ds) transposable element into the 3' end of R-sc:124. In the presence of Activator (Ac), each Ds insertion allele (r-sc:mutables) produced spotted seeds and germinal reversion to fully colored seeds due to the vi …
