Cytotoxic Potential Of Fungi In The Genus Ganoderma, Abril Chao, Omobolanle A. Ayangade, Braham Dhillon, Navi Gill

Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal

Ganoderma lucidum is a mushroom forming fungus that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. G. lucidum, also known as lingzhi or reishi, is consumed in several Asian cultures to promote health and longevity. Bioactive molecules with anticancer properties have been isolated and characterized primarily from the species Ganoderma lucidum, and the cytotoxic potential of other species in the genus Ganoderma remains relatively unclear. Bioactive molecules isolated from mushroom fruiting bodies are demonstrated to have cytotoxicity against different cancer cell lines. Triterpenes and polysaccharides are the two major groups of compounds that exhibit antitumor and anti-inflammatory …

Mechanisms Of Uropathogenic E. Coli Reservoir Formation In The Gastrointestinal Tract, Philippe Nimma Azimzadeh Sep 2024

Mechanisms Of Uropathogenic E. Coli Reservoir Formation In The Gastrointestinal Tract, Philippe Nimma Azimzadeh

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Urinary tract infections (UTI) are an extremely common affliction affecting 150 million people worldwide each year. UTIs are a leading cause of antibiotic therapy among otherwise healthy adult women, accounting for 15% of all outpatient antibiotic prescriptions. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) cause over 80% of community-acquired UTIs. Even when infection is cleared from the urine by clinical antibiotic regimens, 27% of women will experience recurrent UTI (rUTI) within months. Greater than 60% of rUTIs are caused by the same strain of E. coli that caused the initial infection, suggesting that one or more host-associated reservoirs of UPEC can re-inoculate the …

Vglut2-Based Glutamatergic Signaling In Central Noradrenergic Neurons Is Dispensable For Normal Breathing And Chemosensory Reflexes, Yuan Chang, Savannah Lusk, Andersen Chang, Christopher S Ward, Russell S Ray

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Central noradrenergic (NA) neurons are key constituents of the respiratory homeostatic network. NA dysfunction is implicated in several developmental respiratory disorders including Congenital Central Hyperventilation Syndrome (CCHS), Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and Rett Syndrome. The current unchallenged paradigm in the field, supported by multiple studies, is that glutamate co-transmission in subsets of central NA neurons plays a role in breathing control. If true, NA-glutamate co-transmission may also be mechanistically important in respiratory disorders. However, the requirement of NA-derived glutamate in breathing has not been directly tested and the extent of glutamate co-transmission in the central NA system remains uncharacterized. …

Utilizing Lentinula Edodes And Pleurotus Ostreatus To Decrease Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Growth With Oxidative Stress Present As A Model For Cancer, Abdullah Amir

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, and its effects can be worsened when high levels of oxidative stress are present. Lentinula edodes and Pleurotus ostreatus are two edible mushroom species that have been shown to contain many anticancer agents. However, the effects of these mushrooms have not been tested on cancer in the presence of oxidative stress. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to test the effectiveness of L. edodes and P. ostreatus in reducing Saccharomyces cerevisiae growth when oxidative stress was present. It was hypothesized that these two mushroom species would …

Investigating The Synergistic Antibacterial Effects Of Ulva Lactuca And Fucus Vesiculosus Extracts On The Growth Of Staphylococcus Epidermidis, Bryan Lee

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

This study investigates the antibacterial properties of extracts from marine macroalgae, Ulva lactuca (green algae) and Fucus vesiculosus (brown algae), individually and in combination, with a focus on combating antibiotic-resistant pathogens. The escalating challenge of antibiotic resistance requires the exploration of alternative antimicrobial agents derived from natural sources. Utilizing the agar well diffusion method, the study evaluates the inhibitory effects of the algae extracts on Staphylococcus epidermidis. Chloramphenicol serves as the positive control, while 5% dimethyl sulfoxide acts as the negative control. The combination of Ulva lactuca and Fucus vesiculosus extracts did not exhibit a significantly greater antibacterial effect than …

The Effect Of Different Vegetable Oils (Macadamia Nut Oil And Walnut Oil) On The Coefficient Of Friction As A Finish For Oak Wood, Lee Dillon Sep 2024

The Effect Of Different Vegetable Oils (Macadamia Nut Oil And Walnut Oil) On The Coefficient Of Friction As A Finish For Oak Wood, Lee Dillon

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Slipping due to insufficient friction with flooring can cause fatal injuries in workplaces and homes. Oak wood flooring is commonly used in construction to build these environments. In the manufacturing process, wood finishing is conducted at the end of the process to strengthen the properties and longevity of the wood, although it could impact the coefficient of friction (COF) causing slip falls. Vegetable oils, such as macadamia nut and walnut oils, used as wood finishes have gained prominence due to their beneficial aspects to the environment. However, little is known about their effectiveness as a safe coating for wood floors. …

A Comparative Study To Predict Ovarian Cancer, Binadie Wickramasinghe, Gloria Regisford Sep 2024

A Comparative Study To Predict Ovarian Cancer, Binadie Wickramasinghe, Gloria Regisford

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Ovarian cancer is considered the fifth most common cancer type among females in the United States. Furthermore, ovarian cancer accounts for 25% of all gynecologic cancers, and usually, this cancer is diagnosed at a late stage. A patient can live at least five years longer if ovarian cancer is diagnosed early. Therefore, the early diagnosis of ovarian cancer is essential. This study aims to classify ovarian cancer using biomarkers such as ovarian cancer antigen (CA125), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), human epididymis protein 4 (HE4), and anti-TP53 antibodies. Rising or persistent CA125 blood levels provide a highly …

Cortisol And Alpha-Synuclein Stability In Saliva Under Varying Storage And Handling Conditions, Mo Zheng, Sujata Srikanth, Jeremiah Carpenter, Delphine Dean

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor impairments and non-motor symptoms, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Currently, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is the primary biofluid used for PD biomarker studies, notably α-synuclein, despite the invasive nature of lumbar puncture procedures. Recent work has shown that some of these PD biomarkers have been measured in saliva. As an alternative to CSF, saliva can be non-invasively self-collected by patients repeatedly over time to monitor biomarker levels. However, the stability of these biomarkers in saliva needs to be evaluated before saliva can be considered for patient self-collection studies. Therefore, …

Grunwald, Cecilia Montauban, Julian C. Kerbis Peterhans, Molly M. Mcdonough, Carl W. Dick, Michael Bartonjo, M. Corrie Schoeman, Multiple Additional Authors

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Roughly a third of all horseshoe bat species (Rhinolophidae: Rhinolophus) are found in Africa, where a recent continent-wide genetic survey suggested the presence of both undescribed and apparently invalid species. Here, we focus on the R. landeri species complex and the recent elevation of R. lobatus Peters, 1852, to species rank. That action created ambiguity in the taxonomy of East African members of the group—are both R. landeri Martin, 1838, and R. lobatus sympatric in East Africa or is another, unnamed species present there? Here, we refine genetic, morphological, and behavioral characterizations of R. landeri and its erstwhile synonyms with …

Assessing Two Methodologies To Protect Stored Rice From Insect Infestation, Md Naim Uddin Sep 2024

Assessing Two Methodologies To Protect Stored Rice From Insect Infestation, Md Naim Uddin

Student Theses and Dissertations

Rice can be infested with various insects during storage. Long-lasting insecticide netting (LLIN) can be a good barrier for insects if LLIN can be employed to air vents in rice mills. However, accumulated dust from milling practices could impact LLIN efficacy. Two experiments were conducted, in one experiment, lesser grain borer (LGB), Rhyzopertha dominca (F.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) exposed to LLIN for 1 and 10 min and assessed mortality after 1 h and 1 week. In another experiment, maize weevil (MW), Sitophilus zeamais [Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)] exposed to the same LLIN and examined knockdown after 24 h. LLIN demonstrated higher mortality …

Montane Molluscs: Factors Affecting Snails And Their Trematodes Throughout The Mountain Regions Of Arkansas, Taylor Michelle Fiedor Sep 2024

Montane Molluscs: Factors Affecting Snails And Their Trematodes Throughout The Mountain Regions Of Arkansas, Taylor Michelle Fiedor

Student Theses and Dissertations

Spatial processes across both broad and fine scales are important for understanding ecosystem function. Broad-scale spatial processes can be defined as elevational, latitudinal, or longitudinal processes whereas fine-scale spatial processes represent movement and dispersal among habitat patches. Historically, studies on freshwater snail distributions have focused on fine-scale processes with secondary consideration given to spatial sampling. Species inventories for freshwater snails are outdated because historically snail species descriptions were based on shell morphology, which is highly plastic. In Arkansas, it is estimated that there are 36 freshwater snail species, but this estimate does not account for shell plasticity and does not …

Elevating Microrna Levels By Targeting Biogenesis With Steric-Blocking Antisense Oligonucleotides, Mallory A. Havens, Anthony J. Hinrich, Frank Rigo, Michelle L. Hastings

Biology Department Faculty Articles

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are regulators of gene expression, and their dysregulation is linked to cancer and other diseases, making them important therapeutic targets. Several strategies for targeting and modulating miRNA activity are being explored. For example, steric-blocking antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) can reduce miRNA activity by either blocking binding sites on specific mRNAs or base-pairing to the miRNA itself to prevent its interaction with the target mRNAs. ASOs have been less explored as a tool to elevate miRNA levels, which could also be beneficial for treating disease. In this study, using the PKD1/miR-1225 gene locus as an example, where miR-1225 is located …

Genotypic And Phenotypic Characterisation Of Asymptomatic Bacteriuria (Abu) Isolates Displaying Bacterial Interference Against Multi-Drug Resistant Uropathogenic E. Coli, Ciara Kenneally, Craig P. Murphy, Roy D. Sleator, Eamonn P. Culligan

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

Escherichia coli can colonise the urogenital tract of individuals without causing symptoms of infection, in a condition referred to as asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU). ABU isolates can protect the host against symptomatic urinary tract infections (UTIs) by bacterial interference against uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC). The aim of this study was to investigate the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics of five ABU isolates from midstream urine samples of adults. Comparative genomic and phenotypic analysis was conducted including an antibiotic resistance profile, pangenome analysis, and a putative virulence profile. Based on the genome analysis, the isolates consisted of one from phylogroup A, three from …
