Can Host Traits And Environmental Conditions Predict Helminth Fecundity And Length?, Finley Melnikoff Jan 2023

Can Host Traits And Environmental Conditions Predict Helminth Fecundity And Length?, Finley Melnikoff

Pitzer Senior Theses

Helminths are some of the most common parasites in the world, infecting anything from humans to plants to mice. These parasites can play a massive role in determining a host's fitness and ultimately can have consequences on their body condition, reproductive ability, and infection transmission potential. Many factors influence the potential burden helminths have on their hosts–from host traits to environmental conditions–yet helminth fecundity and length have been studied very little in relation to these factors. Helminth fecundity–or how many eggs each female worm has in its ovaries–determines the transmission of the parasite, and helminth length is correlated with fecundity, …

Determining Species-Specific False-Positive Rates Using Visual And Auditory Cues: A Case Study With Sagebrush Steppe Songbirds, Amelia K. Evavold Jan 2023

Determining Species-Specific False-Positive Rates Using Visual And Auditory Cues: A Case Study With Sagebrush Steppe Songbirds, Amelia K. Evavold

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Errors in wildlife field data threaten to bias resulting abundance and occupancy estimates if not properly accounted for or minimized. Methods to account for false-positive errors in wildlife data have not been as thoroughly developed as those for false-negative errors despite false-positives being present across diverse wildlife taxa and study systems. The calibration method to account for false-positives involves assessing the field detection method to determine how often false-positive errors occur in the field data. Rates can then be incorporated into estimations based on the field data to improve estimation accuracy. This study presents an application of the calibration approach …

Vitamin D Receptor Mediates Liver Ischemia And Reperfusion Injury By Autophagy-Regulated M2 Macrophage Polarization, Mingming Fang, Chen Zhong Jan 2023

Vitamin D Receptor Mediates Liver Ischemia And Reperfusion Injury By Autophagy-Regulated M2 Macrophage Polarization, Mingming Fang, Chen Zhong

Turkish Journal of Biology

Liver ischemia and reperfusion (IR) injury is the major complication of liver-related operations. Macrophage polarization has an essential effect on the mechanism of liver IR injury. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) has been found to regulate macrophage polarization and alleviate IR injury. Nevertheless, the correlation between VDR and macrophage polarization in liver IR injury has not been clearly elucidated. VDR knockout mice and wild-type littermates underwent partial liver ischemia for 90 min and reperfusion for 6 h. RAW264.7 cells were also used to verify the influence of VDR on macrophage polarization in vitro. VDR activation could promote M2 macrophage polarization and …

Assessing The Relationship Between Binding Kinetics And Subcellular Protection Of Ribosomes By Single-Domain Antibodies, Mara Bureau Jan 2023

Assessing The Relationship Between Binding Kinetics And Subcellular Protection Of Ribosomes By Single-Domain Antibodies, Mara Bureau

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Assessing the ability of VHHs to protect ribosomes from the depurination activity of Ricin toxin’s(RT) enzymatic subunit, RTA, can provide insights regarding binding placement, epitopes of interest and role of affinity in neutralization is critical for the development of anti-toxin countermeasures. Determining the level of correlation between binding strength, binding location and elicited protection can be useful for future and ongoing research. Ricin is easily manufactured and considered one of the most toxic biological agents known. Without an approved vaccine, continued research to design and optimize therapeutic countermeasures is essential. Over the past decade single-domain antibodies (VHHs) have been recognized …

Olfaction And Puberty : The Study Of The Development And Migration Of The Gnrh-1ns And Their Migratory Partners The Olfactory Unsheathing Cells, Ed Zandro Moina Taroc Jan 2023

Olfaction And Puberty : The Study Of The Development And Migration Of The Gnrh-1ns And Their Migratory Partners The Olfactory Unsheathing Cells, Ed Zandro Moina Taroc

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Sexual development and puberty are two key developmental processes that are crucial for the propagation and evolution of species. The hormone Gonadotropin releasing hormone-1 (GnRH-1) is a key hormone in regulating both processes by controlling the hormonal Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal axis in the release of sex hormones (Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone) at the correct developmental time points initiate puberty and progress sexual development. A subset of hypothalamic neurons known as the GnRH-1 neurons (GnRH-1ns) release GnRH-1 in a pulsatile fashion during embryonic and post-natal development to specifically regulate these processes. The GnRH-1ns are an interesting group of neurons because they are formed in …

Endothelial And Stromal Cell Contributions To Salivary Gland Injury And Repair, Amber Altrieth Jan 2023

Endothelial And Stromal Cell Contributions To Salivary Gland Injury And Repair, Amber Altrieth

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Injury and disease can contribute to excess accumulation of extracellular matrix, which if persistent, results in fibrosis, impeding proper organ function. The salivary gland can develop fibrosis following irradiation treatment for cancer therapy, Sjögren’s Disease, and other causes; however, it is unclear which stromal cells and signals participate in injury responses and disease progression and which cells may be important for restoring proper organ function. Two stromal populations that are implicated in injury and repair are the endothelial cells, lining the inner surface of blood vessels, and pericytes, that wrap around the vessels. One stromal pericyte population, expressing the transcription …

Regulatory Mechanisms In The Drosophila Germline, Shane Breznak Jan 2023

Regulatory Mechanisms In The Drosophila Germline, Shane Breznak

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

To launch the next generation, all sexually reproducing animals must undergo the process of producing mature eggs and sperm. This process is known as gametogenesis. During gametogenesis key developmental checkpoints are met to ensure proper egg and sperm production. Model organisms, such as Drosophila melanogaster, have been used to study gametogenesis to gain insight into the conserved mechanisms that can be attributed to human infertility and disease due to the availability of genetic tools, quick life cycle and the conservation of regulatory mechanisms. During Drosophila oogenesis there are many key developmental transitions that must be completed to produce a fully …

Distribution Patterns And Factors Influencing Relative Abundance Of The Alligator Snapping Turtle (Macrochelys Temminckii) In Mississippi, Luke Pearson, Lucas Haralson, Gabrielle Berry, Grover J. Brown, Carl Qualls

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Macrochelys temminckii (Alligator Snapping Turtle) was recently proposed as a threatened species under the US Endangered Species Act due to current and projected future declining populations range wide. Despite a presumed statewide distribution in Mississippi, the Alligator Snapping Turtle had been documented in only 32 of 82 counties between 1857 and 2012, thus leaving a substantial gap in our knowledge of this species’ distribution. Therefore, we collected credible records from museums, literature, and the general public, as well as directly assessed the current distribution and relative abundance of the Alligator Snapping Turtle in all major river systems (i.e., Pascagoula, Pearl, …

Sustainability Practices In Aquaculture: Using Algae Turf Scrubber Biomass To Raise Black Soldier Flies As An Alternative Feed In Blue Tilapia, Oreochromis Aureus, Culture, Michelle C. Lowery

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Since the 1980s, non-algal aquaculture has grown to encompass 49% of all seafood production in response to a growing human population and increased seafood demand (FAO, 2022). Hurdles exist to aquaculture sustainability, including dependence on wild sourced fishmeal (FM) and the impacts wastewater discharge. It takes 4-5 tons of wild forage fish to produce one ton of dry FM (Miles and Chapman, 2006) and as aquaculture is primarily conducted in earthen ponds and public open water bodies (FAO, 2022), finfish culture can have a high impact on the surrounding environment by discharging excess nutrients. This study used algae turf scrubber …

Diversity Of Antimicrobial Peptides In Silkworm, Pooja Makwana, Kamidi Rahul, Katsuhiko Ito, Bindu Subhadra

Faculty Publications - Biological Sciences

Antimicrobial resistance is a phenomenon that the present-day world is witnessing that poses a serious threat to global health. The decline in the development of novel therapeutics over the last couple of decades has exacerbated the situation further. In this scenario, the pursuit of new alternative therapeutics to commonly used antibiotics has gained predominance amongst researchers across the world. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from natural sources have drawn significant interest in the recent years as promising pharmacological substitutes over the conventional antibiotics. The most notable advantage of AMPs is that microorganisms cannot develop resistance to them. Insects represent one of the …

Microdebris Abundance, Distribution, And Ingestion By Sargassum-Associated Juvenile Fishes In The Gulf Of Mexico, Olivia L. Lestrade, Frank Hernandez Jan 2023

Microdebris Abundance, Distribution, And Ingestion By Sargassum-Associated Juvenile Fishes In The Gulf Of Mexico, Olivia L. Lestrade, Frank Hernandez

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Holopelagic Sargassum is a critical nursery habitat for the early life stages of many marine fishes, including several federally managed species in the United States and Caribbean. Sargassum is often aggregated along surface convergence features where microdebris (synthetic, semi—synthetic, and naturally—derived particles size) have also been found in relatively high concentrations. In this study, we collected microdebris from Sargassum and adjacent open water habitats (in 2018), and juvenile fishes from Sargassum (in 2017 and 2018) in the northern Gulf of Mexico to quantify habitat—specific microdebris concentrations and the degree to which Sargassum—associated juvenile fishes ingest microdebris. Microdebris concentrations within …

Warm Land Surface Temperatures And Eastern Asian Homo, Robert Patalano, Hong Yang Jan 2023

Warm Land Surface Temperatures And Eastern Asian Homo, Robert Patalano, Hong Yang

Biological and Biomedical Sciences Department Faculty Journal Articles

Climate change and hominin evolution are inextricably linked. Pleistocene climate variability, for example, is thought to have had major influences on hominin morphology, brain size, and diversity. However, clear cause-and-effect relationships between specific climatic events and major evolutionary occurrences are difficult to establish due to temporal and spatial gaps in paleoclimatic, paleoenvironmental, and archaeological records. A new branched GDGT paleotemperature record from the Lantian Basin of Central China (Lu et al., 2022), a location known for the earliest hominin presence in East Asia, illustrates warm land surface temperatures over a two-million-year period between 2.6 and 0.6 Ma, a critical time …

Mycorrhizal Feedbacks Influence Global Forest Structure And Diversity, Camille S. Delavaux, Joseph A. Lamanna, Jonathan A. Myers, Richard P. Phillips Jan 2023

Mycorrhizal Feedbacks Influence Global Forest Structure And Diversity, Camille S. Delavaux, Joseph A. Lamanna, Jonathan A. Myers, Richard P. Phillips

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

One mechanism proposed to explain high species diversity in tropical systems is strong negative conspecific density dependence (CDD), which reduces recruitment of juveniles in proximity to conspecific adult plants. Although evidence shows that plant-specific soil pathogens can drive negative CDD, trees also form key mutualisms with mycorrhizal fungi, which may counteract these effects. Across 43 large-scale forest plots worldwide, we tested whether ectomycorrhizal tree species exhibit weaker negative CDD than arbuscular mycorrhizal tree species. We further tested for conmycorrhizal density dependence (CMDD) to test for benefit from shared mutualists. We found that the strength of CDD varies systematically with mycorrhizal …

The Role Of Herbal Medicines In Central American Indigenous Communities; Improving Accessibility To Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Treatment, Sarai Ortega Jan 2023

The Role Of Herbal Medicines In Central American Indigenous Communities; Improving Accessibility To Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Treatment, Sarai Ortega

CMC Senior Theses

Indigenous communities in Central America have used various plant medications to treat illnesses and diseases for centuries. Clinicians must consider improving traditional healthcare methods that are intrinsic to indigenous communities in order to increase access to effective treatments, particularly for diseases that these communities are more at risk for. This work aims to propose a method to identify whether traditional preparations of five plants (Anacardium occidentale L., Hamelia patens Jacq., Momordica charantia L, Neurolaena lobota L. R. Br. Ex Cass., and Tecoma stans L. juss. ex Kunth) can reduce blood glucose levels in rats with type two diabetes. Additionally, …

Effects Of Male Attractiveness On Prostaglandin E2 Production Levels, Kyra Cousins Jan 2023

Effects Of Male Attractiveness On Prostaglandin E2 Production Levels, Kyra Cousins

CMC Senior Theses

Sexual conflict or sexual antagonism can encourage co-evolution between males and females of a given species. In house crickets (Acheta domesticus), unattractive (smaller) and attractive (larger) males seem to use differential allocation of prostaglandin E2 in their spermatophore to pursue different propagation strategies in influencing female oviposition. This study aims to determine the means by which attractive and less attractive males press their reproductive advantage by focusing on prostaglandin E2. To test the hypothesis that the difference in prostaglandin E2 concentration is essential for female reproductive manipulation, spermatophores were retrieved from 21 pairs of mated …

Evolutionary History And Adaptation To Salinity In American Alligators, John Konvalina Jan 2023

Evolutionary History And Adaptation To Salinity In American Alligators, John Konvalina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Stressful environments can commonly be found at the edge of a species range and may be a driver for adaption in suboptimal environments. Furthermore, the edge of a species' range can expand and contract over time, resulting in multiple independent invasions of the same stressful habitat. Elucidating population genetic structure and demographic history can aid in determining the which geologic factors impact range distributions and when climatic changes occurred driving genetic patterns observed in contemporary populations. Moreover, populations at the edge of the species range may adapt to the stressful environments that occur at the range edge and exhibit genetic …

Peripheral Clock Disruption And Metabolic Disease: Moving Beyond The Anatomy To A Functional Approach, Gabriella M. Marino, Deanna M. Arble Jan 2023

Peripheral Clock Disruption And Metabolic Disease: Moving Beyond The Anatomy To A Functional Approach, Gabriella M. Marino, Deanna M. Arble

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Sleep and circadian disruption are associated with an increased risk of metabolic disease, including obesity and diabetes. Mounting evidence indicates that misaligned and/or non-functional clock proteins in peripheral tissues critically contribute to the presentation of metabolic disease. Many of the foundational studies which led to this conclusion have focused on specific tissues such as the adipose, pancreas, muscle, and liver. While these studies have greatly advanced the field, the use of anatomical markers to manipulate tissue-specific molecular clocks may not be representative of the circadian disruption that occurs within the clinical population. In this manuscript, we argue that investigators can …

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Animals must learn to ignore stimuli that are irrelevant to survival and attend to ones that enhance survival. When a stimulus regularly fails to be associated with an important consequence, subsequent excitatory learning about that stimulus can be delayed, which is a form of nonassociative conditioning called ‘latent inhibition’. Honey bees show latent inhibition toward an odor they have experienced without association with food reinforcement. Moreover, individual honey bees from the same colony differ in the degree to which they show latent inhibition, and these individual differences have a genetic basis. To investigate the mechanisms that underly individual differences in …

Lin-35 Is Necessary In Both The Soma And Germline For Preserving Fertility In Caenorhabditis Elegans Under Moderate Temperature Stress, Brian P. Mikeworth, Frances V. Compere, Lisa N. Petrella Jan 2023

Lin-35 Is Necessary In Both The Soma And Germline For Preserving Fertility In Caenorhabditis Elegans Under Moderate Temperature Stress, Brian P. Mikeworth, Frances V. Compere, Lisa N. Petrella

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Maintenance of germline function under stress conditions is crucial for species survival. The germ line in many species is especially sensitive to elevated temperature. We have investigated the role of the pocket protein LIN-35 in preserving fertility in Caenorhabditis elegans under moderate temperature stress. We show that lin-35 mutants display several temperature sensitive germline defects, and more severe reductions in brood size at elevated temperatures compared to wild type. This loss of fertility under temperature stress is primarily due to loss of zygotic, but not maternal, LIN-35. Additionally, we have found that expression of LIN-35 is necessary in both the …

Mechanical Devices For Census And Detection Of Off-Host Larval Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae), Donald B. Thomas, Holly D. Gaff, Brenda Leal-Galvan Jan 2023

Mechanical Devices For Census And Detection Of Off-Host Larval Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae), Donald B. Thomas, Holly D. Gaff, Brenda Leal-Galvan

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Standard off-host tick census techniques are generally inefficient for larval stages. Also, such techniques expose the investigator to environmental hazards including tick bites. Mechanical devices are an option which were tested under field conditions for proof of concept and in side-by-side comparison to the standard techniques. The tick-vac collected more ticks than the legging technique, but with lower frequency of positive detections. It may have utility for sampling small areas, such as weedy corrals suspected of harboring ticks. Different configurations of tick-bots, robotic vehicles with flags, depended on intensive operator control to avoid obstacles, limiting operation to line of sight. …

The Effects Of Nausea And Vomiting On Mother And Child, Mayane Bensoussan Jan 2023

The Effects Of Nausea And Vomiting On Mother And Child, Mayane Bensoussan

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Nausea and vomiting are common side effects that can occur during pregnancy. On one hand, it can lead to its severe form called hyperemesis gravidarum, which can lead to hospitalization for electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, muscle weakness, or arrhythmias. On the other hand, nausea and vomiting may be an indication of a statistically healthier fetus. Benefits of maternal nausea and emesis to the developing fetus include improved neural development, decreased risk for congenital heart defects, and decreased incidence of miscarriages. Additionally, benefits to the mother include decreased risk for lung, cervical, and rectal cancer. The mothers also had an overall decreased …

Effects Of Microdosing With Psilocybin Mushrooms, Chavivah Davis

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Microdosing with psilocybin, a psychoactive compound found in certain species of mushrooms, has gained popularity in recent years as a means of enhancing mood, cognition, and creativity without inducing the full-blown psychedelic experience. There are many potential benefits associated with microdosing with psilocybin. Although studies do show many positive effects of microdosing with psilocybin, long-term research is required to make a conclusive statement regarding this topic. Furthermore, there are risks and concerns involved that need to be considered, including the illegality of psilocybin and the lack of research. This paper will review the available literature on microdosing with psilocybin. It …

Epinephrine And Cardiac Arrest: The Catch-22, Shaina Friedman Jan 2023

Epinephrine And Cardiac Arrest: The Catch-22, Shaina Friedman

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Epinephrine has been a standard of care treatment for cardiac arrest for the last century; however, the use of epinephrine began without a significant amount of research. In recent years, many have started to question whether epinephrine is an appropriate treatment for cardiac arrest. While epinephrine causes vasoconstriction of the blood vessels and directs much-needed blood flow to the heart, it has also been shown to harm the microvessels of the brain, causing ischemia and neurological damage. Many trials, studies, and surveys were conducted to determine the correct course of action involving the use of epinephrine during cardiac arrest. Additional …

The Impact Of Maternal Health On Breastfeeding Duration, Yael Weinberg Jan 2023

The Impact Of Maternal Health On Breastfeeding Duration, Yael Weinberg

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The mechanism of breastfeeding is a complex biological process beginning with hormone production from the pituitary gland and ending with the ejection of milk from the breasts. Mothers are recommended to breastfeed exclusively for six months and then continue for another six with the addition of solid food. However, despite the countless health benefits associated with lengthened breastfeeding for both mother and infant, many women dismiss this recommendation. This paper aims to research the aspects of maternal health that can derail the recommended duration of breastfeeding, focusing on emotional health, nutritional intake, and various diseases or surgeries. It is found …

Do The Benefits Of Growth Hormone Outweigh The Risks?, Michael D. Goodstein Jan 2023

Do The Benefits Of Growth Hormone Outweigh The Risks?, Michael D. Goodstein

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Growth hormone treatment was introduced in the 1950s to confront growth hormone deficiency and metabolic irregularities. In 2003, however, the FDA approved growth hormone treatment for patients with abnormal growth rates unlinked to growth hormone deficiency. The treatment has become largely available to the general public, making the safety of growth hormone treatment an extremely important subject. This paper clarifies the benefits and efficacy of growth hormone treatment and analyzes the potential associated risks, including cancer and diabetes.

Pharmaceuticals From Natural Products: The Utility Of The Phylogeny, Shaimaa Magdy Saad

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

About 60% of approved drugs during the last 30 years are either directly or indirectly from natural products. Previous studies have shown that the phylogeny has predictive utility in drug discovery. In this study the pharmacological applications of various naturally-derived drugs were mapped on the phylogeny reconstructed from DNA sequences of the source organisms to decipher phylogenetic patterns that may facilitate drug discovery. A multi-step approach was employed starting with a literature search to compile a comprehensive list of pharmaceutical drugs derived from natural sources. A phylogeny was reconstructed from the source organisms and their pharmacological uses mapped on the …
