Growth And Food Habits Of Micropterus Salmoides In Westhampton Lake, Richmond, Virginia, Charles H. Rawls

Master's Theses

Age, growth, and food habits of the population of Micropterus salmoides (largemouth bass) in Westhampton Lake were studied from September to November, 1978. Two year classes (O and I) were identified by determining numbers of annuli on the scales of the fish. Growth data indicated that the bass attain a size of 254 mm (10 in.) near the end of their second summer. The length-weight relationship was log W = - 4.6829 + 2.9153 log TL. The Fulton condition factor for the population was 1.40. Food habits were described by numerical and frequency of occurrence methods. Young of the year …

The Role Of Na+ + K+ -Activated Adenosine Triphosphatase In The Osmoregulating Marsh Clam, Rangia Cuneata, David Goodwin Sainting

Master's Theses

The marsh clam, Rangia cuneata has been shown in other laboratories to maintain body fluid osmolality above that of the medium in salinities below 10 o/oo. Since the membrane bound enzyme Na ++ K+ - ATPase has been implicated in the osmoregulatory processes in many aquatic organisms, the levels of Na++K+-ATPase activity and 3H-ouabain binding in homogenized tissue samples from mantle, gill, rectum, ventricle, kidney, and foot (including epithelial and muscle tissue) were measured. Mantle, kidney, and gill contained substantial concentrations o f Na + +K+ -AT Pase acti. vi. ty an d 3H- ouab ai. n bin d"i ng …

The Effects Of Ph On Chloride Flux In Fundulus Heteroclitus, Timothy Alton Washburn Jan 1979

The Effects Of Ph On Chloride Flux In Fundulus Heteroclitus, Timothy Alton Washburn

Master's Theses

The effects of increasing hydrogen ion concentration on rate of chloride influx and efflux were studied in the killifish, Fundulus heteroclitus, adapted to fresh water. Because increasing hydrogen ion concentrations have been shown to inhibit sodium influx and because evidence exists to support coupling of chloride transport with sodium transport, the present study was undertaken to determine what effect pH would have on rate of chloride flux. Chloride efflux rates were studied after the addition of sodium bicarbonate to the medium. No significant pH-dependent changes in efflux rate were observed, except at very low pH. Influx rates were significantly changed, …

Effects Of Thyrotoxicosis On Mitochondrial Enzymes Of Rat Soleus, James B. Courtright, Robert H. Fitts Jan 1979

Effects Of Thyrotoxicosis On Mitochondrial Enzymes Of Rat Soleus, James B. Courtright, Robert H. Fitts

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Cytochrome oxidase, glycerol-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and succinate dehydrogenase were measured in mitochondrial fractions obtained from rat soleus muscle of control and 8 week T3 + T4 treated animals. Under these conditions of prolonged treatment, there is a five-fold increase in the specific activities of both cytochrome oxidase and glycerols-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. Significant increases in total cellular mitochondrial content and enzyme activities were observed in T3 + T4 treated animals as compared to controls. These results indicate that thyrotoxicosis can induce selective changes in mitochondrial enzymes in slow twitch red (Type I) muscle fibers.

Development Of Pelagic Larvae And Postlarva Of Squilla Empusa (Crustacea, Stomatopoda), With An Assessment Of Larval Characters Within The Squillidae, Steven G. Morgan, Anthony J. Provenzano Jr.

OES Faculty Publications

Larvae of the predatory crustacean Squilla empusa were collected from the plankton in Chesapeake Bay and reared in the laboratory to permit description of the pelagic stages before the postlarval stage.

Characters such as rostral length and spinulation, carapace spinulation, relative size of telson, overall body size, and appearance probably are of more value for specific than for generic identification. The presence or absence of teeth on the dactylus of the second maxilliped, the presence or absence of a spine on the basis of the second maxilliped, and the number of epipods may be useful characters in determining generic alliances …

The Feasibility Of Detecting Poliovirus I In Water By Radioimmunoassay, Sheril K. Charba

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

A microtiter, solid-phase, indirect radioimmunoassay (RIA) has been developed and evaluated as a method for detecting poliovirus in water samples. Antiserum to poliovirus Type I, LSc2ab, was prepared in rabbits, and high titer, high avidity antiserum to rabbit globulins were radio- actively labeled with 125I by a modification of the Bolton-Hunter and chloramine T methods to increasing specific activities. The immunoreactivity of the labeled antibodies was assessed. After the preparation and standardization of all components of the assay. The optimum assay conditions were determined. These conditions included the method of coating the microtiter wells with antigen, the time and temperature …

Comparison Of Carbon And Nitrogen Content Of Infected And Uninfected Snails, Succinea Ovalis, And The Trematode Leucochloridium Variae, Albert J. Burky, Daniel J. Hornbach Jan 1979

Comparison Of Carbon And Nitrogen Content Of Infected And Uninfected Snails, Succinea Ovalis, And The Trematode Leucochloridium Variae, Albert J. Burky, Daniel J. Hornbach

Biology Faculty Publications

In June, 6.7% of adult Succinea ovalis collected near Urbana, Ohio, were infected with the trematode, Leucochloridium variae. The effects of parasitism were assessed as total organic carbon (equivalent to calorific values) and as total nitrogen. The parasite represents 23.8% of total (parasite + snail tissue) dry tissue weight, 21.4% of total carbon and 19.8% of total nitrogen of infected snails. The higher C:N ratio for parasite tissue indicates a higher proportion of nonproteinaceous compounds (e.g., fats and/or carbohydrates) as compared to host tissue. There is less snail tissue in parasitized S. ovalis. The C:N ratios for parasitized and nonparasitized …

Potential Use Of Hydroelectric Facilities For Manipulating The Fertility Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, James E. Deacon Jan 1979

Potential Use Of Hydroelectric Facilities For Manipulating The Fertility Of Lake Mead, Larry J. Paulson, John R. Baker, James E. Deacon

Publications (WR)

Analysis of historical nutrient data for Lake Mead indicates that the fertility of the reservoir has decreased which may be the cause for a corresponding decline in the largemouth bass population. However, it appears that fertility can be manipulated by altering the operation of the dam. The depletion of nutrients in the euphotic zone by phytoplankton and subsequent accumulation in the hypolimnion during summer and fall provide a natural nutrient gradient from which water of varying fertility can be drawn for discharge. This combined with alterations in the depth or seasonal pattern of discharge can possibly be used to enhance …

The morphology of the proboscis--particularly the epiproboscis, the feeding behavior, the function(s) of the epiproboscis, and the functional morphology of the epiproboscis, were studied in Mitra idea Melville and fi. catalinae Dall (Gastropoda: Neogastropoda; Mitridae.

In M. idae, the epiproboscis is an extensible muscular J-shaped rod which curves under the odontophore, and lies parallel to the longitudinal axis of the proboscis. A muscular external sheath encloses that portion of the epiproboscis which lies within the proboscis haemacoel; an invaginated muscular-epithelial internal sheath covers the ventral part of the epiproboscis. The dorsal part of the epiproboscis consists principally of longitudinal muscle; …

Phasic Response Of Peripheral Nerves To Inflammation, Ralph Lee Myers Jan 1979

Phasic Response Of Peripheral Nerves To Inflammation, Ralph Lee Myers

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Acute inflammation is associated with injury to tissues, whether it be from mechanical destruction, or from the introduction of a noxious substance into the tissue. Inflammation is a homeostatic process, adapted to neutralize harmful substances and restore injured tissue. Celsus (c. A.D. 178) provided the first documented characterization of inflammation. He recognized redness, heat, swelling and pain as the cardinal signs of the inflammatory reaction. Loss of function was later added to this list of symptons (Movat. 1971).

Characterization Of The Bursicon-Mediated Pathway For Membrane Permeability Enhancement In The American Cockroach, Periplaneta Americana, David Alan Compton Jan 1979

Characterization Of The Bursicon-Mediated Pathway For Membrane Permeability Enhancement In The American Cockroach, Periplaneta Americana, David Alan Compton

Theses and Dissertations

The presence of an adenyl cyclase system within the haemocyte of Periplaneta americana has been confirmed by previous investigations, with corresponding experiments using dibutyryl cyclic AMP to show enhancement of 14c-tyrosine uptake into the cuticle linked to stimulation of the sclerotization process.

In the present studies, American cockroaches held at depressed temperatures were treated with bursicon, revealing an increase in haemocyte cyclic AMP concentrations. The levels declined with progression of time, probably resulting from enzymatic hydrolysis.

When animals which had been held at room temperature were treated with bursicon, the levels of haemocyte cyclic AMP were lowered, with a declination …

The Influence Of Food On Induction Of Males In Daphnia Pulex, Paul Henry Schreuder Dec 1978

The Influence Of Food On Induction Of Males In Daphnia Pulex, Paul Henry Schreuder

Masters Theses

Introduction

Daphnia pulex Leydig (Crustacea, Cladocera) is a common component of the zooplankton of freshwater lakes and ponds. Its importance in the aquatic trophic structure as food for small fish has long been recognized.

Typical populations of daphnia consist almost exclusively of females. Under favorable conditions this situation is perpetuated by parthenogenetic reproduction. Eggs produced in this manner are referred to as parthenogenetic or summer eggs. When stressed by falling temperatures, drought, overpopulation, or starvation, populations shift to sexual.reproduction. Parthenogenetic eggs are produced which develop into males. Other eggs known as ephippial or winter eggs are also produced, which after …

Long-Evans rats were raised from birth to eight weeks of age at 5°C, 20°C and 30°C. Blood was taken from animals two to eight weeks of age and assayed for growth hormone and thyroid stimulating hormone. The 30°C reared rats were found to have the longest ear, tail and hind limbs, followed by the 20°C reared rats. The 5°C rats were found to have the shortest ear, tail and hind limb. The 30°C and 5°C reared rats were found to have similar masses at the termination of the experiment. The 20°C reared rats had the smallest mass. Differences in size …

A Study Of Lymphocyte Subpopulations In Allergic And Asthmatic Patients, Cleora W. Barnwell Oct 1978

A Study Of Lymphocyte Subpopulations In Allergic And Asthmatic Patients, Cleora W. Barnwell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The role of T and B lymphocytes in the human immune response has been studied in allergic and asthmatic patients by many investigators. Theories of suppressed cellular immunity have been reported showing decreased levels of T cells in peripheral blood. Elevated levels of IgE, an antibody, have been reported in these conditions, but not shown to be significant in distinguishing the different types of asthma. A double blind study of 19 allergic and 42 asthmatic individuals was conducted measuring T and B cell levels and IgE levels. The asthmatic group was subdivided into three types, intrinsic, extrinsic and mixed. The …

The Effect Of Parental Bone Marrow & Spleen Cells In The Induction Of The Graft-Versus-Host Reaction, Ronald Grane Aug 1978

The Effect Of Parental Bone Marrow & Spleen Cells In The Induction Of The Graft-Versus-Host Reaction, Ronald Grane

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Variously aged (C57BL X C3H)F1 hybrid mice were used as recipients in experiments to determine if spleen or bone marrow cells from normal C57BL or C3H donors, spleen or bone marrow cells from C57BL donors previously treated with cortisone, or C57BL bone marrow cells previously incubated with serum from X-irradiated C57BL mice could induce a graft-versus-host reaction (GVHR).

The mice were assayed for GVHR by mortality or splenomegaly as detected by the discriminant spleen assay developed by Simonsen. Results show that spleen cells from normal C57BL, normal C3H, or cortisone-treated C57BL mice are capable of inducing a GVHR in …
