Can We Prevent Genocide By Preventing Incitement?, Elihu D. Richter, Yael Stein, Alex Barnea, Marc Sherman
Can We Prevent Genocide By Preventing Incitement?, Elihu D. Richter, Yael Stein, Alex Barnea, Marc Sherman
The Islamic Republic of Iran: Multidisciplinary Analyses of its Theocracy, Nationalism, and Assertion of Power
Genocide and its prevention both result from human choice and bystander indifference. Since the Armenian genocide, and the Holocaust, perpetrators have used dehumanizing metaphors to prepare their followers to overcome normative inhibitions that stand in the way of their becoming killers, rapists, and plunderers of members of potential victim populations. Today, one lesson from the Holocaust is that there are existential dangers associated with ignoring state sanctioned dehumanizing hate language. Not all hate language and incitement leads to genocide, and genocide can occur without hate language and incitement. There can be hate language with and without explicit incitement, propagated by …
From China To Cuba: Guerilla Warfare As A Mechanism For Mobilizing Resources, Jorge Barrera
From China To Cuba: Guerilla Warfare As A Mechanism For Mobilizing Resources, Jorge Barrera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Guerilla Warfare is a weapon of the weak; it is decisive only where the actor in power fails to commit adequate resources to the conflict. The Chinese and Cuban revolutions are examples of guerilla warfare success, albeit under different conditions and employment techniques; while Mao Tse-tung utilized decentralized guerilla warfare to indoctrinate and mobilize the masses of peasants for revolutionary struggle against a stronger enemy; Fidel Castro employed a more centralized approach to create the conditions necessary for popular support of the revolution. However, in both cases guerilla warfare was simply part of a pragmatic grand strategy to build nationalism …

The Enmeshment Of Five Worlds, 1710-1713: The Making Of New Bern In Southern Iroquoia, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Review
On September 29, 1710, a hundred and three people - among them their leader Christoph von Graffenried and his son Christoph jr. - arrived at a river the Tuscarora called Gow-ta-no, meaning "pine water." 1 When in 15 84 reconnoitering the coast between what his people named Cape Fear and Cape Lookout, the English captain Arthur Barlowe (?-?) called it Neus River, possibly derived from the name of the Neusiok people living at its mouth,.2 The newcomers were from Canton Bern, a leading member state of the Swiss Confederacy, and they intended to settle in a region located on the …

The Calling Of Nursing, Christoffer H. Grundmann
The Calling Of Nursing, Christoffer H. Grundmann
Theology Faculty Presentations
(excerpt) "Baffled by the broad variety and diversity of nursing and unable to discover one single common thread of thought and discussion in the literature, I got desperate and finally turned to Dean Brown for help, hoping to get some viable direction. And, indeed, I did, yet of course not the way I expected. When I asked her if she would be so kind as to name me the standard instruction textbook used for nursing education and practice, she unhesitatingly replied: 'There isn’t one. Because there are so many content areas in nursing, there is no one text that is …

Death Ante Ora Parentum In Virgil’S Aeneid, Timothy M. O'Sullivan
Death Ante Ora Parentum In Virgil’S Aeneid, Timothy M. O'Sullivan
Classical Studies Faculty Research
Virgil's Aeneid includes a number of scenes in which children die in front of their parents. While the motif has a Homeric precedent, Virgil's invention of a formula (ante ora parentum: "before the faces of one's parents") suggests a particular interest in the theme. An analysis of scenes where the formula recurs (such as Aeneas's shipwreck, the fall of Troy, and the lusus Troiae) reveals a metapoetic resonance behind the motif, with the parent-child relationship acting as a metaphor for authorial influence and artistic creation. Thus the threat that Aeneas might die as Anchises looks on, for …
He Is Our Friend: Thomas L. Kane And The Mormons In Exodus, 1846–1850, Richard E. Bennett
He Is Our Friend: Thomas L. Kane And The Mormons In Exodus, 1846–1850, Richard E. Bennett
BYU Studies
This article, originally a lecture given at Brigham Young University in 2009, was published as part of a special issue of BYU Studies featuring Thomas L. Kane. Although Kane was not a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was an advocate for the Mormon cause and a trusted friend of Mormon leaders for almost forty years. Bennett shows how documents from the Kane collection at Brigham Young University enhance, correct, or confirm our knowledge of the following: first, the attitudes of President James K. Polk and his cabinet and others close to him toward the …

Mal-Adjusted: Integration Of Selves In Joss Whedon's Firefly, Rose Buscemi
Mal-Adjusted: Integration Of Selves In Joss Whedon's Firefly, Rose Buscemi
Honors College Theses
Joss Whedon’s Firefly and Serenity offer a brand new take on the well established science fiction film genre, one that many authors and viewers believe needed Whedon’s fresh new ideas to prevent further stagnating of the genre. Whedon’s Firefly focuses on the lives of Malcolm Reynolds (Mal) and his crew aboard the Firefly-class space ship named Serenity. Mal is the most compelling of the characters on the show because he is, in a way, the most fragile one. In the series premiere, “Serenity,” Mal is a complete man, fighting as a volunteer in a civil war. After his army …

Touring Polygamous Utah With Elizabeth W. Kane, Winter 1872–1873, Lowell C. Bennion, Thomas R. Carter
Bennion and Carter consider the ideas presented by Elizabeth Kane, Thomas's wife, who expressed her dismay with plural marriage in her writings about her visit to Utah in 1872–73. The authors combine Elizabeth's views with their interest in Mormon …

Development Of Three Dimensional Fluid-Structure Interaction Models For The Design Of Surface Acoustic Wave Devices: Application To Biosensing And Microfluidic Actuation, Reetu Singh
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices find uses in a plethora of applications including
but not limited to chemical, biological sensing, and microfluidic actuation. The primary aim of
this dissertation is to develop a SAW biosensor, capable of simultaneous detection of target
biomarkers in fluid media at concentrations of picogram/ml to nanogram/ml levels and removal
of non-specific proteins from sensor surface using the process of acoustic streaming, for potential
chemical sensing, medical, and clinical diagnostic applications. The focus is on the development
of three dimensional finite element structural and fluid-structure interaction models to study wave
propagation and acoustic actuation of fluids …
The Mutual Existence Of Nascent And Senescent World Orders, Burak Akcaper
The Mutual Existence Of Nascent And Senescent World Orders, Burak Akcaper
Center for Turkish Studies Occasional Paper Series
In this essay I will address the issue of change in the international system which the scholars of International Relations have grappled with however inadequately. Accordingly, I will argue that this deficiency stems in no small part from the frequent mutual distance between scholars and practitioners of international affairs. I will, therefore, try to bridge this gap. Ultimately this essay will:
a) Suggest a model (mutual existence of nascent and senescent orders) equipped with a number of hypotheses (laws) of systemic change in the international ―order;
b) Provide a baseline for bringing scholarly and practitioners‘ perspectives closer together, including by …
Neoliberalism And Dependence: A Case Study Of The Orphan Care Crisis In Sub-Saharan Africa, Christine Concetta Gibson
Neoliberalism And Dependence: A Case Study Of The Orphan Care Crisis In Sub-Saharan Africa, Christine Concetta Gibson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Scholars have examined the impacts of neoliberal policies on women, children, small farmers and more, but little attention has been paid to the impact of these policies on orphans. The issue of orphan care is crucial now, and will become increasingly more urgent in the future. Even as HIV/AIDS rates are on the decline, more and more children are being orphaned by the disease. This paper examines the policies, positions and language of the World Bank and I.M.F. regarding orphans in order to understand the biases and assumptions within neoliberalism about orphans, and who is responsible for providing care for …
Density Functional Theory Studies Of Energetic Materials, Michael W. Conroy
Density Functional Theory Studies Of Energetic Materials, Michael W. Conroy
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
First-principles calculations employing density functional theory (DFT) were
performed on the energetic materials PETN, HMX, RDX, nitromethane, and a recently
discovered material, nitrate ester 1 (NEST-1). The aims of the study were to accurately
predict the isothermal equation of state for each material, improve the description of these
molecular crystals in DFT by introducing a correction for dispersion interactions, and
perform uniaxial compressions to investigate physical properties that might contribute to
anisotropic sensitivity.
For each system, hydrostatic-compression simulations were performed. Important
properties calculated from the simulations such as the equilibrium structure, isothermal
equation of state, and bulk moduli were compared …
End The Nfl Blackout!, Richard C. Crepeau
End The Nfl Blackout!, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Over the past week there has been some comment on the NFL television blackout policy that prohibits the televising of home games in the home market unless there has been a sellout 72 hours in advance of kickoff. Some, including Richard Sandomir of the New York Times, have suggested that in this time of economic crisis, when it appears that the number of sellouts of NFL games will be dropping, that Commissioner Goodell should end or suspend the blackout policy. This is a reasonable sentiment, although one might question if offering more blood and circuses offers a viable solution to …

Review: Digital Culture, Play And Identity: A World Of Warcraft Reader, Jordan Lieser
Collected Faculty Scholarship
Both the digital and real societies produced by Blizzard's Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG), World of Warcraft, have received a lot of attention in the relatively new field of game studies. Due to its phenomenal size and cultural significance, the interest World of Warcraft draws is justifiable. The book, Digital Culture, Play, and Identity: A World of Warcraft Reader attempts to dissect the gaming industry's largest MMORPG through a compilation of work consisting of thirteen separate analyses, representing a wide variety of scholars trained with different analytical toolsets. This format was deliberately chosen by the editors, Hilde G. …

Rhetoric And Context In Saramago's Levantado Do Chão, David Frier
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Rhetoric and Context in Saramago's Levantado do Chão" David Frier analyses the 1980 novel by Nobel in Literature 1998 José Saramago. The novel, as-of-yet not translated to English, Risen from the Ground, achieves its success as a key text of the Portuguese post-Revolutionary period in part through its resourceful rhetorical development of textual conventions and echoes derived from a wide range of high- and popular cultural contexts, ranging from the epic poetry of Camões's Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads) of 1578, through glamorized medieval battle-scenes to popular stories and beliefs and to the Fado music of Amália Rodrigues. …

The Paratexts Of Jacob Marcaria: Addressing The (Imagined) Reader In Mid-Sixteenth-Century Italy, Adam Shear
The Paratexts Of Jacob Marcaria: Addressing The (Imagined) Reader In Mid-Sixteenth-Century Italy, Adam Shear
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
For a few years in the middle of the sixteenth century (1557-1564), a Hebrew press was active in Riva del Garda (Riva di Trento) under the management of Jacob Marcaria, a physician. The business arrangements of the press seem complicated and difficult to reconstruct (having only the evidence of the printed editions): Marcaria was printer for most of the books and may be considered the publisher of some; for others, he was in partnership with Rabbi Joseph Ottolenghi of nearby Cremona. The activities of Marcaria and Ottolenghi were undertaken with the permission of the Prince-Bishop of Trent, Cardinal Cristoforo Madruzzo …
