Origin Stories: Critical Race Theory Encounters The War On Terror, Natsu Taylor Saito
Origin Stories: Critical Race Theory Encounters The War On Terror, Natsu Taylor Saito
Michigan Journal of Race and Law
Stories matter. They matter to those intent on maintaining structures of power and privilege, and to those being crushed by those structures. In the United States, the space to tell, and to hear, our stories has been expanding. This means that the histories and lived realities of those who have been excluded, particularly people of color, are seeping into mainstream discourse, into the books our children read, the movies and television shows they watch, and the many websites comprising social media. Critical race theory has played a role in this expansion. It insists that we recognize the legitimacy of the …
The Museum As A Mirror: Reinterpreting And Delinking American Landscape Art From Colonial Narratives, Blythe C. Romano
The Museum As A Mirror: Reinterpreting And Delinking American Landscape Art From Colonial Narratives, Blythe C. Romano
Honors Theses
Art museums have recently been looking at their existing collections with heightened scrutiny, revisiting their decision to display colonial works uncritically in their gallery spaces, and reconsidering the idea that there is such a thing as a unified art historical canon. These conversations regarding reinterpretation are necessary for all museums that choose to display art with problematic histories, as this information is owed to visitors -- especially within the settler colonial context. The Colby College Museum of Art in Waterville, Maine is one site where such collection and gallery “reinterpretation” has begun to be implemented and discussed. For example, in …

Book Review: Christopher I. Beckwith. The Tibetan Empire In Central Asia, Constance Wilkinson
Book Review: Christopher I. Beckwith. The Tibetan Empire In Central Asia, Constance Wilkinson
Comparative Civilizations Review
The Tibetan Empire in Central Asia was brought into being by polyglot polymath philologist MacArthur Fellowship recipient and stupefyingly wide-ranging medieval Central Asian civilizations-ist scholar Christopher I. Beckwith as the "first detailed narrative history of the Tibetan Empire in Central Asia written in any language" (vii). By 1993, Princeton University Press had released a 4th printing/1st paperback edition (with a new afterword by Beckwith), suggesting a widening readership for what some might regard as a rarified subject.

Comparative Civilizations Review
The legacy of the colonial period continues to weigh on France. Recently, President Emmanuel Macron called for the creation of a “Memories and Truth Commission” to lay to rest the lingering questions, bitterness, and controversies surrounding the French occupation of Algeria, the independence war, and the country’s accession to independence. Questions regarding the brutality of French colonial conquests and colonial rule in tropical Africa are also being raised. Immigration from Algeria and other formerly French territories is provoking controversy as is also the fact that France has the largest Muslim population of any European country. Many French citizens, particularly those …
Signs Of The Times: Racism, Tribalism, And Disinformation Before The Comings Of Christ, Luke Drake
Signs Of The Times: Racism, Tribalism, And Disinformation Before The Comings Of Christ, Luke Drake
BYU Studies
Each of the major narrators/compilers of the Book of Mormon evince varying degrees of understanding that their work is destined for modern readers who would face a set of modern concerns.2 This essay suggests that Mormon’s editorial hand—on display both in the redaction of the words of Samuel the Lamanite and in the narration of the events surrounding Samuel’s ministry—can be understood to address pressing issues faced by latter-day readers: specifically, the perils posed by racism, “tribalism,” and disinformation.
Perceived Effectiveness Of A Mentoring Program For Training Adventist Chinese Evangelists, Terry Man-Yuen Tsui
Perceived Effectiveness Of A Mentoring Program For Training Adventist Chinese Evangelists, Terry Man-Yuen Tsui
Dissertations
Problem
The fact that evangelism in the Unorganized Territories of the Chinese Union Mission was done mainly as personal evangelism and that public evangelism was limited to a one-day seed sowing meeting had led to a serious need for equipping pastors in effective public evangelism methods. It required a model of public evangelism, which is adaptable to the local Chinese culture, and a mentoring program that accompanies evangelists, who were still developing their skills in public evangelism.
Method
This study used a parallel mixed methods design to measure the perceived effectiveness of selected methods in the mentoring program. This design …
Twentieth-Century Feminine Visionary Poetics : Vulnerable Visions Of Survival And Healing:, Lucyna Prostko
Twentieth-Century Feminine Visionary Poetics : Vulnerable Visions Of Survival And Healing:, Lucyna Prostko
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
H.D. and Denise Levertov, two visionary poets of the twentieth century, represent both female poets’ awakening of political and historical consciousness and their engagement with the poetics of vulnerability and survival. H.D. and Levertov offer lyrical visions that dismantle the binaries of real and unreal, earthly and transcendent, and individual and communal. The subject of this project is visionary imagination and its various reverberations, limitations, and potentialities. What is at stake in feminine visionary twentieth-century poetics is the creation of imaginative worlds, the space of possibility, and the shaping of a lyrical form that encompasses the voices of survival, vulnerability, …
Meeting Places : The Entanglements Of Poetry And Science In The Modern American Imagination, James H. Searle
Meeting Places : The Entanglements Of Poetry And Science In The Modern American Imagination, James H. Searle
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
“Meeting Places: The Entanglements of Poetry and Science in the Modern American Imagination” explores how Ralph Waldo Emerson, W.E.B. Du Bois, William Carlos Williams, and Muriel Rukeyser responded to the rise of modern science and industrial technology by reflecting on the similarities and differences between the poetic and scientific imaginations. Across four chapters, I show how the growth of the natural and social sciences from the mid-nineteenth to mid-twentieth century spurred these writers to rethink the social and cultural functions of literature in a democratic society. Unlike many of their peers, these figures refused to treat science either as a …
The Materiality Of Metaphor In Mayan Hieroglyphic Texts: Metaphor In Changing Political Climates, Dinkel A. Rebecca
The Materiality Of Metaphor In Mayan Hieroglyphic Texts: Metaphor In Changing Political Climates, Dinkel A. Rebecca
Anthropology Theses & Dissertations
Recent research on the discursive and rhetorical forms of Mayan hieroglyphic texts has demonstrated how language and writing were used to frame, not just represent, Pre-Columbian Mayan history. Research on the role of metaphor in this framing has only just begun, and despite the well-known multimodal character of Mayan hieroglyphic texts, research on the role of metaphors in pictorial images has been even more limited. Previous research has not fully documented metaphor variation, particularly as it materializes across different modalities, media, places, and times. Doing so will allow for more subtle and elaborate interpretations of metaphor use and meaning in …
To Burn Or Bury? That Is The Question : The Late Bronze Age And Iron Age In Northern Europe, Petra N. Peretin
To Burn Or Bury? That Is The Question : The Late Bronze Age And Iron Age In Northern Europe, Petra N. Peretin
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
Changes in social organization can be studied through several different avenues one ofwhich is through mortuary patterns. Here we will be looking at changes in social organization during the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age in Northern Europe using mortuary and osteological data. If we study how each community interacts, mourns, stores, transports, and buries their dead then we can learn about the underlying mechanisms that transform and maintain a society, and gain insight into the societal and economical shifts of the Late Bronze Age and Iron Age in this region. These changes will be determined by analyzing the distribution …

Technology, Business, And Music Culture From The T.A.M.I. Show To The Rock Festival (1964-1969), Xavier Michael Frascogna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The social and cultural impact of the first concert movie - The T.A.M.I. Show - manifested in innovations, disruptions, and transformations, not only in the music and movie industries, but society at large, some of which remain today. By recasting live and lively presentations of race, social class, and gender to a broad, predominately white audience on the most prestigious of entertainment platforms, the big screen of movie theaters around the world, The T.A.M.I. Show created sounds and images that complicated traditional white interpretation of Black music and culture, especially in the midst of the social and racial conflict of …
“[T]Hat Monstrous Machine Of His” : The Machine Metaphor In John Cleland’S Memoir Of A Woman Of Pleasure, Choedphong Uttama
“[T]Hat Monstrous Machine Of His” : The Machine Metaphor In John Cleland’S Memoir Of A Woman Of Pleasure, Choedphong Uttama
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
John Cleland’s Memoir of a Woman of Pleasure (1748–49), commonly known as Fanny Hill, is regarded as the first pornographic novel in English literature. Its description of sexual activities is explicit but its language is not coarse. It employs a wide range of metaphors to refer to both sexual acts and genitalia and the metaphor used most frequently to refer to the penis is “the machine.” The machine metaphor will be the focus of this paper, which aims to argue that the machine metaphor carries two meanings. The first is the machine as one of military metaphors common in …
Survival And Sovereignty : Forces On The Rise In Aurelio Tolentino’S Novels, Loida L. Garcia
Survival And Sovereignty : Forces On The Rise In Aurelio Tolentino’S Novels, Loida L. Garcia
Manusya, Journal of Humanities
Aurelio Tolentino (1869–1915) is best remembered as the first nationalist dramatist who was in and out of prison because of his mutinous writings. His five extant novels manifest the sociopolitical struggle of early 20th-century Filipinos from the worldview of a versatile author. Tolentino’s fiction from 1909 to 1914 unveils how the colonized adapted ingrained, rigid, and conventional Spanish influences to the liberal and materialistic scheme imposed by the United States. A sociohistorical approach was used to investigate Tolentino’s narratives, revealing a people with a pliant but firm character brought about by their four centuries of subjugation. The literary method used …
The Aesthetics Of Repair: The Way Of Zen And Appreciation, Tyler Ellis Dobbs
The Aesthetics Of Repair: The Way Of Zen And Appreciation, Tyler Ellis Dobbs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The nature objects and how beings interact with them has long been a debate in the philosophic tradition. One aspect of this I have taken a look at is the aesthetic qualities entailed in this with particular attention paid to repair. In particular I explore the blurring of the subject-object distinction and the role of narrative in human engagement. I based my research and arguments primarily from Buddhist and Japanese Zen theories and ideas. Special attention was paid to the philosopher Kitaro Nishida and the Kyoto School philosophy tradition and ideas from Mahayana Buddhism.
Blood Money: 12th Century Trade Wars And The Fourth Crusade, Alexander Evgeniy Stalowski
Blood Money: 12th Century Trade Wars And The Fourth Crusade, Alexander Evgeniy Stalowski
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The historiography of the Fourth Crusade has neglected long-term macroeconomic developments and its influence on the Fourth Crusade within the Byzantine Empire and the Italian states of Venice, Pisa, and Genoa. It is well-established that the Venetians rerouted the crusading forces to Constantinople which caused political, religious, and economic challenges that altered the Mediterranean world. Yet, the trend of writing on political events and short-term microeconomics and macroeconomics from 1180 to 1204, has done great disservice to the larger trans-regional disputes that engulfed the Mediterranean during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. This thesis will attempt to fill the void of …
"Good Neighbourhood": Canada And The United States' Contentious Relationship During The Civil War, Michael R. D. Connolly
"Good Neighbourhood": Canada And The United States' Contentious Relationship During The Civil War, Michael R. D. Connolly
The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era
For the majority of the Civil War, Canadians were divided in their loyalties to the Union and to the South. However, in 1864, after years of sending agents and conspirators into Canada, the South became bolder in their affairs north of the border. These efforts culminated into two attacks, planned and executed from Canada by the South: The seizing of the Philo Parsons on Lake Erie on September 19, 1864; and the raid on St. Albans, Vermont, a month later, on October 19, 1864. These two attacks forced Canada and Great Britain to reassess their neutrality and, under pressure from …
Heaven Hung In Black: Grant’S Reputation And The Mistakes At Cold Harbor, Samantha J. Kramer
Heaven Hung In Black: Grant’S Reputation And The Mistakes At Cold Harbor, Samantha J. Kramer
The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era
This article examines Ulysses S. Grant’s command of the Union army after receiving his commission as Lieutenant-General through analyzing his decisions both before and during the bloody battle of Cold Harbor. By examining the various factors leading to his tactical decisions, including the ever-looming threat of the upcoming presidential election, the article questions whether or not his reputation as a butcher of his own men is truly deserved. That he made mistakes is undeniable, but the mess of Cold Harbor was not solely his fault. Through the use of a variety of biographies and personal journals and memoirs, the article …
Feminine Intervention: The Bosnian War And Women’S Roles In Instigating Peace, Ashly Helfrich
Feminine Intervention: The Bosnian War And Women’S Roles In Instigating Peace, Ashly Helfrich
Undergraduate Research Journal
Women played a significant role both during and after the Bosnian conflicts throughout the 1990s, as they prioritized their continuation of traditional roles in their homes and families, while also promoting gender equality and women’s roles in peacekeeping processes. Women who were directly involved in the aftermath of the Bosnian war often reinforced traditional gender stereotypes through their connections to their roles as mothers and wives, and their emphasis on the relationship and care of individuals who had been physically and mentally traumatized by the war. In response to the brutal rapes and human rights violations that occurred during the …
The Ogaden War: An Intersection Of Local And Global Powers In The Horn Of Africa, Luis Garcia
The Ogaden War: An Intersection Of Local And Global Powers In The Horn Of Africa, Luis Garcia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis examines the internationalization of the Ogaden War of 1977 to 1978 between Ethiopia and Somalia. It argues that the involvement of the superpowers--the United States and the Soviet Union-- exacerbated the regional conflict. Somalia, a country that was fractured because of the Scramble for Africa, was driven by the concept of Greater Somalia, the unification of all ethnic Somali lands. Ethiopia, a country that fought fiercely to resist colonization, resisted by any means necessary to secure their sovereignty over the Ogaden. The conflict was complicated due to the overwhelming amount of military aid Ethiopia received from the Soviet …
Toward An Arabic Modernism: Politics, Poetics, And The Postcolonial, Alaa Taha
Toward An Arabic Modernism: Politics, Poetics, And The Postcolonial, Alaa Taha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis explores modernism's temporality and location through the examination of Arabic modernism's occurrence. In this thesis, I question whether the authenticity of modernism derives from its temporality period or its literary content while concurrently investigating several poems by Lebanese authors Kahlil Gibran and Nadia Tuéni and Syrian poet Adonis. Additionally, I trace Arabic modernism's influence to the early 1900s-1910s to the conception of the Mahjar movement and the Pen League, an Arabic literary society consisting of Arabic immigrant writers. As I discern the political impact within Arabic writings, I explore political events, such as World War I and its …
"Ten Tongues And One Lie: Turco-Roman Relations C. 552-650'', Jackson Melvin
"Ten Tongues And One Lie: Turco-Roman Relations C. 552-650'', Jackson Melvin
Undergraduate Honors Theses
In 62 7 CE, a nomadic army exploded through the Caspian Gates and into the northernmost lands of the Sasanian Empire (in present day Dagestan and Azerbaijan). Our principal historian, Movses Dasxuranc'i (also called Movses Kagankatvac'i) calls them Khazars, and he may well be correct. 1 But they were certainly a part of the Western Turkic KJ1aganate, invading at the behest of the great TongYabghu Khagan. According to Movses, the attack was exceedingly brutal, with the Turks, in their "universal wrath," slaughtering men. women, and children "like shameless and ravenous wolves."2 This was no random attack. It was the opening …
Ostracism And Democracy, Alex Zhang
Ostracism And Democracy, Alex Zhang
Faculty Articles
The 2020 Presidential Election featured an unprecedented attempt to undermine our democratic institutions: allegations of voter fraud and litigation about mail-in ballots culminated in a mob storming of the Capitol as Congress certified President Biden’s victory. Former President Trump now faces social-media bans and potential disqualification from future federal office, but his allies have criticized those efforts as the witch-hunt of a cancel culture that is symptomatic of the unique ills of contemporary liberal politics.
This Article defends recent efforts to remove Trump from the public eye, with reference to an ancient Greek electoral mechanism: ostracism. In the world’s first …
Remembering The Experience Of War: A Sensory Study Of The Vietnam War And Collective Memory, Jacob Randolph
Remembering The Experience Of War: A Sensory Study Of The Vietnam War And Collective Memory, Jacob Randolph
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The Vietnam War is remembered in a variety of ways. It is remembered as a war against communism, yet one that was also against American ideals of freedom. It is remembered as a war of patriotism, yet one that was also against the numerous military members who fought in it. It is remembered as a war for integration and unity among black and white, yet many African-Americans remember the time period as a war being fought abroad and at home. Memory of the war is obviously contradicting, but then again the 1960s and 1970s oftentimes were.
This thesis examines how …
Caratacus, The Remembered Warrior: The Legacies Of Caratcaus In Roman Histories And The British Victorian Era, Isabella Kearney
Caratacus, The Remembered Warrior: The Legacies Of Caratcaus In Roman Histories And The British Victorian Era, Isabella Kearney
Pomona Senior Theses
This study will explore the origins of the historical figure of Caratacus and analyze its reception in Victorian and Edwardian Britain. This work will begin by providing an overview of Caratacus’ context in the first century in Britannia. Then, looking at the reception of Caratacus, the study will chronologically analyze the portrayal of Caratacus in the ancient sources of Tacitus and Cassius Dio. As the first textual evidence of Caratacus, this will provide insights into Caratacus’ history and the origins of Caratacus’ transformation into an icon of Roman and British history. This work will then analyze the receptions of Caratacus …

Internet Memes: Leaflet Propaganda Of The Digital Age, Joshua Troy Nieubuurt

Internet memes are one of the latest evolutions of “leaflet” propaganda and an effective tool in the arsenal of digital persuasion. In the past such items were dropped from planes, now they find their way into social media across multiple platforms and their territory is global. Internet memes can be used to target specific groups to help build and solidify tribal bonds. Due to the ease of creation, and their ability to constantly reaffirm axiomatic tribal ideas, they have become an adroit tool allowing for mass influence across international borders. This text explores the link between internet memes and their …

Making And Breaking Kings: Generational Kingship And The Masculinities Of The Last Plantagenet Kings Of England,1308–1399, Richard Merrell
History Undergraduate Honors Theses
In this project, I apply ideas on hegemonic and chivalric masculinity to four generations of Plantagenet kings of England during the fourteenth century—Edward II, Edward III, Edward the Black Prince, Richard II. My aim is to decenter men from their default position at the normative gender. I specifically recontextualize kingship form the canonical frameworks of patriarchal power and privilege and reconfigure it in terms of new research on masculinity studies to understand how masculine identities interact with ideas on the generational component of kingship. This project has implications for other fields of study such as chivalry and medieval masculinity. I …
Interpretresses: Native American Women Translators In Colonial America, Faith Clarkson
Interpretresses: Native American Women Translators In Colonial America, Faith Clarkson
Undergraduate Research Awards
Underlying all the disputes and treaties between native Americans and Europeans was the need for an understanding of what the groups were saying to each other. Translation was the common denominator throughout the numerous interactions between native tribes in America and colonists coming over from Europe. In colonial America, translators were crucial to establishing relationships between native Americans and the Europeans that came to North America to create colonies. These interpreters operated in the in-between of two different cultures and they needed to be knowledgeable enough about both of them to correctly convey meaning to either side. It was also …
