Formal Retraction Or Literary Repentance In The Elizabethan Age., Irene B. Rhoads
Formal Retraction Or Literary Repentance In The Elizabethan Age., Irene B. Rhoads
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Before entering upon a discussion of those writers of the Elizabethan Age whose works present specific instances of Personal Retractation, let us turn our attention to the problem in general and try to find out why writers of this age and of earlier times felt it necessary to repent of their literary efforts. Some critics may say that retractation was merely a literary convention; and why bother about its beginnings, sources, et cetera? Others may have the opinion that it was a personal trait, only a means of satisfying some peculiar whim or fancy of the author. Some may go …

Philadelphia University Yearbooks
Many events have occurred during our years at Philadelphia Textile School. Some of them are important, others trivial. Of these it is possible for only a few to be here recorded. In the years to come, some chronicle, however, incomplete, may help to freshen the memories of the class of 1929.
With this purpose in mind, the ANALYSlS staff have labored to produce this volume.

Bachelors’ Theses
In every decade and in every century there are certain men who stand out, so to speak, above all others. Some men are famous for literature, some for art: some are before the public because of their philanthropic work, while others are famous because of political standing.
The world has always been set, and in each decade or century different actors appeared. In our time we have men such as Governor Smith, Senator Reed constantly before the public. In the last century we had Lincoln and before Lincoln we had Washington, Jefferson, etcetera.

Horace's Aid To Augustus In Reorganizing The National Religion, George E. Mistele
Bachelors’ Theses
The change from the democratic form of government of the Romans to the monarchy of the Caesars also brought with it a loosening of the religious bonds which had bound the people to the carrying out of their civic duties. Augustus, on ascending to the supreme power, saw at once the need of returning to the old religion which had been so powerful a factor in bringing about the rise of the republic. He determined to reorganize the Roman religion and selected Horace to aid him by presenting to the people in the pleasant guise of poetry, the virtues and …

Tertullian's Influence As A Man And A Writer On The Church, Mary Dominica Mullen
Bachelors’ Theses
Tertullian was born about the middle of the second century A. D., at Carthage, a great city with a great history* ’’Tyre in Africa,” is one of his favorite phrases for Carthage and her ’’sister cities,” and he quotes Virgil’s description of Dido’s town ’’studiis asperrima belli.”* But his Carthage was not that of Dido and Hannibal. It was the refounded city of Julius Caesar, now itself two hundred years old - a place with a character of its own, familiar to the reader of St. Augustine’s Confessions - a character confirmed by the references of Tertullian to its amusements …

Bachelors’ Theses
It is the happy voices and sweet faces of children that gladden life, for they give a spirit of youth to everything and their wistful joy and sense of wonder, their simplicity and trustfulness, their winning ways and innocent mirth, help to make others in the world hopeful and happy too.

Rebirth Of Turkish Nationalism, Douglas Counsell Moir
Bachelors’ Theses
The Turkish Nationalist movement which triumphed at Lausanne in 1922, like other historical events, had its roots extending back into the past. New conditions offered better prospects to Mustafa Kemal, than had lain before Enver, Tal’at and Javid, or before Midhat, or before Mahmud II and Selim III.

A Social And Intellectual Interpretation Of European History From The Thirteenth Century Through The Age Of Napolean, Laurence Joseph Younce
Bachelors’ Theses
One of ·the most outstanding features of this century, called by Walsh "the greatest of centuries'', is the steady decline it exhibits of the power of the Holy Roman Empire. The causes for this decline were as numerous as inexorable: there was (1) a well-nigh insuperable combination of physical difficulties in the way of effective unity, (2) a disintegrating rise of differing national consciousnesses among the component parts of the Empire, (3) the anarchic tendencies of feudalism, (4) the influence of the contemporaneous Commercial Revolution through the rise of the city states, (5) the rise of the nation states of …
