Narrative-Rhetorical Structures In Revelation: Developing A Thematic Model, J. Webb Mealy Oct 1981

Narrative-Rhetorical Structures In Revelation: Developing A Thematic Model, J. Webb Mealy

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The rhetoric of narration employed by John in the composition of Revelation was analyzed as a key to interpretation. This analysis was carried out in the context of two test passages, 20:11-21:10 and 6:1-8:5. in the first passage, the single vision-scenes of the Last Judgment (20: 11-15) and the descent of the New Jerusalem (21:1-10) were examined for internal structure and mode of narration, and each was found to be structured in a relatively static, pictorial and descriptive mode rather than a temporal, event-oriented mode. Certain commonly alleged anomalies in the order of the text and other exegetical problems were …

Pandora, Vol. 1, No. 1, Concerned Philosophers For Peace

Concerned Philosophers for Peace

We organized at the Pacific Division meeting of the American Philosophical Association this year in Portland, having found that we share several convictions. A general one is that as the nuclear arms race continues to accelerate and international tensions increase our chances of survival diminish. Yet we do not want to hide from the facts, nor do we want to stand by and watch as though nuclear war were some new kind of public spectacle. We feel furthermore that as philosophers and as educators we own a precious responsibility for the condition of our society and indeed for the whole …

Climbing Learners' Hill: Benedictines At White Earth, 1878-1945, Carol J. Berg Osb

Saint Benedict’s Monastery Publications

Benedictine sisters and monks administered and staffed a boarding school on the White Earth Reservation in Minnesota from 1882-1945, responding to a request from the local bishop and to the Peace Policy of President Grant. Church denominations were asked to cooperate with the government in Christianizing and “civilizing” the Indians—on and off-reservations. With significant aid from federal funds, various denominations, primarily Catholic and Protestant, built churches and schools to educate and “convert” Indians. This was done in the cause of assimilation, with most of the missionaries, lay or religious, deliberately undermining the traditional cultures. Benedictines came late to the Indian …

The Evolution Of The Fleet Submarine In The United States Navy, Robert P. Kendall Apr 1981

The Evolution Of The Fleet Submarine In The United States Navy, Robert P. Kendall

History Theses & Dissertations

This thesis examines the evolution of the United States Navy fleet submarine from the T-class of 1916 through the Tench-class of 1943. The fleet submarine played a major role in the defeat of Japan in World War II by attacking enemy lines of communication and supply, vital to an island empire. The author reviews the trials and errors of submarine construction in the United States Navy. Each succeeding class of submarines is discussed in order to show the progress made, leading to the excellent weapon provided for submarine officers and men with which they destroyed Japanese merchantmen and warships. Japanese- …
