Germans In Brazil: A Comparative History Of Cultural Conflict During World War I, Frederick C. Luebke Jan 1987

Germans In Brazil: A Comparative History Of Cultural Conflict During World War I, Frederick C. Luebke

Department of History: Faculty Publications

The first three chapters establish the historical context for understanding what happened to the Germans in Brazil during the period of the war in Europe and its immediate aftermath, 1914 to 1920. The large pattern of German settlement in Brazil, offered in Chapter I, is followed by a study of German ethnic institutions--churches, schools, societies--and the German-language press to reveal literacy levels, religious and linguistic characteristics, and the measure of assimilation (or lack thereof) into Brazilian society. Ethnic group relations, perceptions, and images, along with attendant concerns and fears, are analyzed next to show how and why the Brazilian majority …

Archaeology Of The Brasada: A Cultural Resources Assessment Of The Chevron Resources Company Properties In Northeastern Duval County, Texas, A. Joachim Mcgraw, Beverly J. Van Note, Courtenay J. Jones

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

Within the past decade, cultural resource management has become an increasingly significant aspect of archaeological investigations in southern Texas. Twenty-five new sites were identified, recorded, and assessed as the result of a 4000-acre cultural resources survey in northeastern Duval County, southern Texas, by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, from October to December 1981. The investigations were carried out under the requirements and guidelines of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, the Vernon Texas Civil Statute 4590f, as amended, and the Guidelines for Archeological Investigations of Mining Areas in Texas (Texas …

Lex Orandi, Lex Operandi: The Relationship Of Worship And Work In The Early Church, Carl A. Volz Jan 1987

Lex Orandi, Lex Operandi: The Relationship Of Worship And Work In The Early Church, Carl A. Volz

Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers

(Excerpt)

We are all familiar with the famous dictum of Prosper of Aquitaine, who in the fifth century coined the axiom, lex orandi, lex credendi. I propose a variation on this principle by suggesting lex orandi, lex operandi, the law of prayer gives birth to the law of works, and my test case will be the early church before Gregory the Great. To take each of these themes separately would be a simple task. We are all familiar with early Christian treatises on worship and the histories of worship. We also possess numerous commentaries on early Christian attitudes toward society …

Spoils Of Statehood: Montana Communities In Conflict, 1888-1894, William L. Lang Jan 1987

Spoils Of Statehood: Montana Communities In Conflict, 1888-1894, William L. Lang

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

Montana's political life in the 1890's was characterized by stalemate, uncompromising parochial demands, personal animosity, and corruption as local communities fought over the prizes of statehood. The major prize, the state capital, was won by Helena after a campaign featuring class and community antagonism, racist rhetoric, personal attacks, and vote buying. In the interests of local power brokers, the legislature created several units of higher education instead of establishing a consolidated university. The battles over the spoils of statehood created a pattern of cynicism and parochialism that continues to influence the state's political life.

Petrarch's "Trionfo Dell'eternità": Aesthetics Of Conversion, John S. Smurthwaite Jan 1987

Petrarch's "Trionfo Dell'eternità": Aesthetics Of Conversion, John S. Smurthwaite

Quidditas

As the first of Petrarch's six Triumphs, the "Trionfo del Tempo," comes to an end, the poet affirms time's apparent victory over all things in the sublunar world. Not even fame is able to endure time's unrelenting and ultimately disintegrating onslought:

che è questo però che sì s'apprezza?

Tutto vince e ritoglie il Tempo avaro;

chiamasi Fama, ed è morir secondo,

ne più che contra 'l primo è alcun riparo;

così il Tempo trionfa i nomi e 'l mondo!

("Trionfo del Tempo," vvs. 141-45_

What is this that is so highly valued? Greedy Time overcomes and steals all away. …

The Wilton Diptych And The Absolutism Of Richard Ii, Sumner Ferris Jan 1987

The Wilton Diptych And The Absolutism Of Richard Ii, Sumner Ferris

Quidditas

The Wilton Diptych (in The National Gallery, London) may now, after some years of hesitation on the matter, be considered to be very probably the work of an English artist. Consequently, we may take the painting to be not simply a masterpiece of the International Style but a specifically English masterpiece of the age of Richard II, the kind whom it chiefly honors and depicts, and we may expect to find in it a specifically English meaning.

Lesser Gods Of The Ancient Near East And Some Comparisons With Heavenly Beings Of The Old Testament, K. Merling Alomia Jan 1987

Lesser Gods Of The Ancient Near East And Some Comparisons With Heavenly Beings Of The Old Testament, K. Merling Alomia

Dissertations

This study examines the concept and imagery of heavenly beings as they appear described and depicted in the texts and iconography of the Ancient Near East, and compares the variegated concept and imagery with the angelic realm in the Old Testament.

Utilizing motifs commonly repeated in the mytho-epic literature of the Fertile Crescent--such as the divine assembly and its diverse constituency, the protector gods, the messenger gods, the sons of the gods, the warrior gods, the demonic gods, etc.--the study exposes the diversity among heavenly beings and their place within the divine realm or the hierarchical pantheon. The study abounds …

Division Of Labor Between The Sexes: An Historical Review Of Anthropological Literature And Presentation Of An Hypothesis For Analysis, Barry Kevin Douglas Jan 1987

Division Of Labor Between The Sexes: An Historical Review Of Anthropological Literature And Presentation Of An Hypothesis For Analysis, Barry Kevin Douglas

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The sexual division of labor, or activity differentiation between males and females, is one of the most distinctive features of culture. The importance of the sexual division of labor to anthropology is basic to the discipline and of widespread impact; for this reason anthropological interest in it stems from many perspectives. Rooted in human evolution, the division is considered a key to the success of the human species (Lancaster 1978). Regarded as the original and most basic form of economic specialization and exchange (Murdock and Provost 1973) the sexual division of labor is grounded in the mutual dependence of males …
