Gun Running In Arabia: The Introduction Of Modern Arms To The Peninsula, 1880-1914, James W. Fiscus
Gun Running In Arabia: The Introduction Of Modern Arms To The Peninsula, 1880-1914, James W. Fiscus
Dissertations and Theses
Modern breech-loading rifles flooded into Arabia and the region around the Persian Gulf between 1880 and World War I. This work examines in detail, and analyzes, the introduction of modern arms to Arabia, the origin of those arms, the trade patterns by which they were moved, and the international and local political factors that affected the trade. The international arms trade was driven by three major factors. First, the rapid technological development of small arms in the nineteenth century fed the market, resulting in the availability of hundreds of thousands of obsolete military rifles for resale. Each time new rifles …

In Search Of Lost Cultures: Books 1987, Shaun O'Connell
In Search Of Lost Cultures: Books 1987, Shaun O'Connell
New England Journal of Public Policy
Shaun O'Connell reviews a number of books whose focus is the "loss and tenuous preservation" of cultural values. He detects signs of a cultural crisis in which "literature and American life are increasingly detached" and disturbing indications of a loss of "national consensus," of trust, and perhaps of polity itself. Two hundred years after the signing of the Constitution, he writes, in this year of celebration, we learned in minute detail of the Iran-Contra deceits and duplicities, of government by secret White House junta having replaced the rule of law. Most dismaying of all, we did not appear to be …
New England Pilots In The Lafayette Flying Corps, William F. Hanna
New England Pilots In The Lafayette Flying Corps, William F. Hanna
Bridgewater Review
The Lafayette Flying Corps was the name given to a group of American pilots who flew with the French Air Service during World War 1. More than 200 Americans became expatriates, for a time at least, in order to try to qualify to fly the latest French fighter planes against the Germans. By war's end the 180 who succeeded were serving in 93 French squadrons. Although most later transferred to the U.S. Air Service, it was their days in the Lafayette Flying Corps and its most elite squadron, the Lafayette Escadrille which recalled the fondest memories among survivors. Of the …
The Evolution Of The Literary Fish, Sharon R. Wachter
The Evolution Of The Literary Fish, Sharon R. Wachter
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Fish symbolism, which is mythologically linked with fertility gods in many instances, changes with man's changing concept of himself and his relationship to the universe. Christians, who perceive their God as asexual, have divided fish symbolism into two mutually exclusive categories: religious symbolism, which deals solely with things divine, and secular symbolism, which deals solely with things sexual. This division survives until well into the twentieth century. An examination of various poets from the last hundred years shows a trend to focus on images traditionally associated with God in order to show divine and religious failure in dealing with the …
