Archaeological Monitoring For The Tri-Party Improvements Project, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, I. Waynne Cox

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In 1987, the Center for Archaeological Research entered into a contract with the San Antonio Metropolitan Transit Authority to provide consultant services for the downtown San Antonio Tri-Party Improvements project. Preliminary research was provided prior to initiation of construction, and monitoring was conducted during the three years of modifications to the downtown area. The archaeological resources exposed during the project were researched and documented, and recommendations were made throughout the construction period.

Archaeological Investigations In Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, 1988 And 1989, Anne A. Fox

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

In June of 1988 and 1989, The University of Texas at San Antonio conducted an archaeological field school at the northern end of the plaza in front of the Alamo in downtown San Antonio. The Center for Archaeological Research cooperated with the university in organizing and staffing this field school. Excavations were limited to specific areas related to the fortifications around the main entrance to the Alamo constructed in 1835 and demolished and backfilled less than a year afterward. These fortifications consisted of a lunette and related defensive trench around the main gate, a secondary trench parallel to the south …

Books

Genocide is a modern term whereby groups of people are killed on the basis of their religion, race, ethnicity, or nationality. This book suggest that modernity and the tremendous social differentiation that is a part of our modern world may, in part, be to blame. The authors examine textbook 20th century horrors: from the massacre of the Armenians, to the planned famine in the Ukraine, to the Holocaust, and links of modern warfare to genocide. By studying cases of genocide, the authors hope to inform and connect to all other efforts to understand and to prevent the mass destruction …

A Brief History Of Providence College, Donna T. Mccaffrey

History & Classics Faculty Publications

A New York City native drawn to Providence College by the love and example of her uncle, Rev. Cornelius P. Forster, O.P., Dr. Donna T. McCaffrey ’73G, ’83 Ph.D., and ’87G was a seminal figure in the history of the College — the same history she chronicled so fondly and scrupulously. Her 522-page doctoral dissertation, “The Origins and Early History of Providence College Through 1947,” described in vivid detail the people and the events that aligned a century ago to realize the bold vision of the Right Rev. Matthew Harkins, D.D., bishop of Providence, to build a Catholic college in …

The Prophet Disarmed: Milton And The Quakers, Steven Marx Jan 1992

The Prophet Disarmed: Milton And The Quakers, Steven Marx

English

The question of war or peace troubled sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe as much as it troubles our own time. Organized violence-the systematic infliction of irrevocable harm upon one group of human beings by another-was the activity by which the modern nation-state originated, defined itself, rose and fell. During those centuries, most Europeans affirmed, or at least accepted war as the final arbiter of what happened in history. But a significant minority, whether because of inner illumination, abstract reasoning, or the outcome of experience, disputed the primacy of war, maintaining that organized violence was intrinsically evil and that its purposed …

The Book of Mormon invites exploration and reexploration. After more than 150 years of careful reading, we are still learning to appreciate its fullness, understand its origins, and comprehend its messages. Reexploring the Book of Mormon yields a wealth of new insights. More than ever before, patient and skillful research during the past decade has led from one discovery to another. Since 1981, the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (F.A.R.M.S.) has issued articles and updates—brief, readable reports on current discoveries about the origins and contents of the Book of Mormon. Eighty-five of these findings published through 1991 have …

The Politics Of Language In Byron's The Island, James C. Mckusick Jan 1992

The Politics Of Language In Byron's The Island, James C. Mckusick

English Faculty Publications

Byron's late poem The Island: or, Christian and His Comrades (1823) has not proven especially congenial to modern sensibility; relatively little has been written about it, and most critics have tended to dismiss it as a regrettable episode in the Romantic idealization of the Noble Savage .

The Midwest Quarterly: A Journal of Contemporary Thought

Nicely blending his training in the visual arts with his verbal skills, as MALCOLM O. MAGAW shows, John Updike in Marry Me produces a fuller understanding of his characters and a richer tapestry for his readers. Professor of English at the University of New Orleans, Magaw has published essays on Hawthorne, Melville, Thoreau, Yeats, Keats, Warren, Bellow, Walker Percy, Hemingway, and Cheever. He has had two previous publications in The Midwest Quarterly and is working currently on Malamud.

Dance As A Cultural Element In Spain And Spanish America, Amy Lynn Wall Jan 1992

Dance As A Cultural Element In Spain And Spanish America, Amy Lynn Wall

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

Two years ago I had the opportunity to live and travel in Spain. Because I participate in and enjoy international dance, I sought to identify the Spanish culture through dance. Throughout my literature review I continued this identification process by looking at the history of Spain, the functions of dance in the society, the regional variations in dance and traditional costume, the dance of the Roman Catholic Church of Spain, and finally the influence Spain has had on dance in Spanish America.

Stephen Crane's Maggie: A Girl Of The Streets And Kate Chopin's The Awakening: A Study In Literary Naturalism, J. Katherin Huffman

Theses & Honors Papers

During the 1890’s, two American novels, Maggie: A Girl of the Streets (A Story of New York) written by Stephen Crane and The Awakening written by Kate Choplin, deal with the lives and death of two surprisingly similar young women living in different social standing and regions. Even though the novels are written by opposite sexes with opposite setting and have quite culturally different protagonists, they share the Naturalistic themes of biological determinism, which is expressed through the use of animal imagery and animal symbolism. Crane does not allow Maggie to have positive aspirations, making her appear less human and …

'Peace: A Gift Of God, A Human Task': Toward A Liberation Theology For Northern Ireland, David Miles Moore Jan 1992

'Peace: A Gift Of God, A Human Task': Toward A Liberation Theology For Northern Ireland, David Miles Moore

Honors Theses

PREFACE: I would have to cite the five months I spent in Cork, Ireland as the biggest motivating factor behind this paper. I knew next to nothing about Northern Ireland before this period. Soon after my arrival in Cork, however, I became fascinated with the socio-religious anomaly to the north of me. Since I became a religion major at Colby, I have always been interested in liberation theology. As I read about the poverty, injustice and violence that pervades Northern Ireland, I was reminded of the context in which Gustavo Gutierrez, Tissa Balasuriya, and Elsa Tamez write and live. The …

John Quincy Adams As Minister To Russia, 1809-1814: The Ideals And Realities Confronting His Mission, Mary Elizabeth Willwerth Jan 1992

John Quincy Adams As Minister To Russia, 1809-1814: The Ideals And Realities Confronting His Mission, Mary Elizabeth Willwerth

Masters Theses

To John Quincy Adams, the early nineteenth century proved itself to be not only a struggle for American independence from Europe, but a struggle for the eighteenth century ideal of the recently formed American philosophy of government. This unique philosophy inspired by key figures of the American Enlightenment, such as Thomas Paine, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, incorporated the vision of America leading the way of enlightened world governments.

Son of the proud American revolutionary, John Adams, John Quincy Adams continued to follow the basic axioms of his father's generation and implement their basic ideals within his own various careers …

Tied To Tradition: The Silenced Rage Of The African Woman In Selected Novels Of Buchi Emechata, Marie Giselle Martine Raphael Jan 1992

Tied To Tradition: The Silenced Rage Of The African Woman In Selected Novels Of Buchi Emechata, Marie Giselle Martine Raphael

Theses : Honours

In addressing the myths of past and present social and familial structures and hierarchies. Post-Colonial Literatures are forced to confront complex assertions of identity, evolved through an inheritance shaped by both traditional and foreign influence. In a study of Buchi Emecheta' s novels, The Slave Girl, The Joys of Motherhood and Second Class Citizen, a tension is thus seen to emerge within the African heroine, between “her communally bred sense of herself as an African, and her feminist aspirations for autonomy and self-realization as a woman" (Frank, 1987, 45). Though the female protagonists of these narratives are placed within different …

On "Hindutva" And A "Hindu-Catholic," With A Moral For Our Times, Julius Lipner Jan 1992

On "Hindutva" And A "Hindu-Catholic," With A Moral For Our Times, Julius Lipner

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The purpose of this article is to comment on the term hindutva, viz. "Hinduness," with special reference to a 19th century Bengali thinker who sought to indigenise his Christian faith, and to draw some topical conclusions. The thinker is Brahmabandhab Upadhyay (1861-1907) whom his sometime friend, Rabindranath Tagore, Bengal's greatest luminary, described as "a Roman Catholic ascetic, yet a Vedantin -- spirited, fearless, self-denying, erudite and uncommonly influential." No doubt Upadhyay was influential then; he had a powerful impact on Tagore himself especially when they were jointly establishing what would later develop as Tagore's brainchild of Santiniketan. For years previously …
