Soldiers In War: A Brief History Of The United States' Participation In World War I With Special Emphasis On The Kentucky National Guard, Rhonda Smith

Using mainly primary sources, the activities of the Kentucky National Guard in World War I are chronicled. The major contribution of these Kentuckians was the 149th Infantry, which served on the front line in France. After extensive research, it is concluded that the Kentucky Guard did not play a major role in the war effort.

For much of America's history, a certain fascination has existed in American culture with the lifestyle of the woodsman who made the hardwood wilderness his home. Over time this fascination has given birth to a collection of romantic traits firmly identified with such a frontiersman.

The requirements for survival in a deep wilderness forced the pre-American Revolution era woodsman turned long hunter, to be "Indian," to demonstrate a high level of marksmanship, and ultimately to draw most of his needs from the bounty of the forest. Such requirements tended to promote the popular conceptions surrounding the eastern frontiersman. Looking beyond …

The works of twenty women whom participated in the westward expansion at some time between 1820 and 1920 are represented. The women have participated by immigration, emigration, homesteading, or simply living a trans-Mississippi community during the aforementioned time period. The work as a whole provides a variety of examples of the lifestyle and challenges of the period, which may highlight the uniqueness of each woman, while at the same time showing some common experience. The Courier

"Every American schoolboy knows the story of the historic battle between the Merrimac and the Monitor", wrote historian Bernard Brodie in his 1941 classic Sea Power in the Machine Age. General Adam Badeau played a significant part in telling American children about the battle by means ofhis article "The Story ofthe Merrimac and the Monitor", published in the April 1887 issue of St. Nicholas magazine, the outstanding American juvenile periodical ofits day. The original manuscript ofthis article, reprinted here, is preserved in the George Arents Research Library at Syracuse University.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the later works of Williams. Burroughs, focusing on them as they articulate his theories of the individual. Following a brief look at each work (The Wild Boys, Exterminator!, Port of Saints, Cities of the Red Night, The Place of Dead Roads, The Western Lands) is a discussion of Burroughs' concerns about the individual, as expressed in his theories of government, religion, the body, and language. Burroughs instructs individuals, attempting to educate them to all the restraints imposed by society. The overall narrative structure of these six works is also discussed and then …

As the Senior Consultant for the Mozambique Government, Prexy Nesbitt, a Chicago-based anti-apartheid activist and educator, delivered this address in 1992 at the Africa in the 90's Conference sponsored by the Center for Urban Education at DePaul Univeristy. This address analyzes inaccuracies in the portrayal of Africa as a continent and includes commentary on how international countries, such as the United States, have developed policies related to the continent.
