Historical Perspectives On Violence Against Women, Vivian C. Fox
Historical Perspectives On Violence Against Women, Vivian C. Fox
Journal of International Women's Studies
Three great bodies of thought have influenced western society’s views and treatment of women: Judeo-Christian religious ideas, Greek philosophy and the Common Law legal code. All three traditions have, by and large, assumed patriarchy as natural – that is male domination stemming from the view of male superiority. As part of the culture perpetuated by these ideologies, violence towards women was seen as a natural expression of male dominance. This paper contains three main themes. The first establishes patriarchy as an early pattern of military societies and the subsequent emergence of the Judeo-Christian, Greek and legal cultural paradigm as ideological …

Conspiracy Rhetoric In Cyberspace: Jim Condit And The 9/11 Attacks On America, An Analysis Of The Voice And Appeals Used In Condit's Rhetoric, Kreg Allan Kinney
English Theses & Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the voices and appeals used in conspiracy rhetoric which is distributed via the internet. The voices, one measure of the argument's authority, are analyzed and described in depth, with eleven voices identified. These voices and their significance to Condit's text as a whole are discussed. Following the voice analysis, an Aristotelian analysis of the text's appeals to ethos, logos, and pathos is performed to examine the persuasive force of Condit's argument. Finally, the correlation between the voices and the appeals is examined to determine the strength of the correlation between the two constructs and to determine whether …

Postcolonial Politics And Colonial Media Representations In New Caledonia, Alaine Chanter
Postcolonial Politics And Colonial Media Representations In New Caledonia, Alaine Chanter
Pacific Studies
The signing in 1998 of the Noumea Agreement on the political future of New Caledonia was of great significance in conferring a limited form of nationhood on New Caledonia prior to a vote on independence in fifteen to twenty years' time. The agreement itself argues that the emergence of a " new sovereignty" requires affirmation of the formative place of Kanak identity and culture in the society. This requirement is particularly apparent within the European community, which has based its opposition to independence on a denigration of Kanak claims to an affirmative identity and peoplehood. This article interrogates whether there …

Omaha Beach : A Tragedy Of Errors, David P. Stanley
Omaha Beach : A Tragedy Of Errors, David P. Stanley
Theses
The American assault on the small strip of sand code-named Omaha Beach, has become one of the most longstanding examples of American military triumph. Yet, at the same time, it is an event synonymous with death and destruction. There, in the early morning hours of June 6, 1944, over 3000 American soldiers either lost their lives or were wounded in an attempt to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds and an enemy force that was ready for their arrival.
The assault on Omaha was not one that had been briefly or incompletely planned. In fact, it was over a year in the …
The Roles Of Patrician And Plebeian Women In Their Religion In The Republic Of Rome., Lesa A. Young
The Roles Of Patrician And Plebeian Women In Their Religion In The Republic Of Rome., Lesa A. Young
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper looks at the roles of patrician and plebeian Roman women in their religion. It investigates the topic during the period of the Republic (509-30 BCE) and pulls the information together in a concise manner.
The primary sources used were narrative histories and literature from the late Republic, as well as from the Imperial period up through the second century, that reflect the opinions of the Imperial period. The secondary sources precipitated further research into primary sources and comparisons of these studies.
It was found that women played private and secondary roles in their religion. Due to changes in …

For Patriot Dream: America Freedom Endures, Don P. Diffine Ph.D.
Belden Center Books
This book describes what in the world is at stake for America's war on terrorism. How shall we gauge the future of our land so recently visited with terrorism against our pillars of capitalism? For over 200 years, our country, through freedom and hard work, has changed the world. Our religious freedoms, civil freedoms, human rights, and the importance we place on the dignity of the individual--all these set us apart. Among all the world's nations, America still stands out in front. We should never forget that we are Americans, first, last, and always.

Prevailing Winds: Radical Activism And The American Indian Movement., David Kent Calfee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 1968 a number of Chippewa Indians met in Minneapolis, Minnesota to discuss some of the problems they faced in their communities. This meeting gave birth to the American Indian Movement. From 1968 to 1974, the American Indian Movement embarked on a series of radical protests designed to draw attention to the concerns of American Indians and force the Federal government into acting on their behalf. Unfortunately, these protests brought about a backlash from Federal law enforcement agencies that destroyed the American Indian Movement's national power structure.

Creating A New Genre: Mary Rowlandson And Hher Narrative Of Indian Captivity., Rachel Bailey De Luise
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the aftermath of King Philip's War, Puritan Mary Rowlandson recorded her experiences as an Indian captive. In a vivid story that recollects the details of these events, Rowlandson attempts to impart a message to her community through the use of a variety of literary techniques. The genre of the Indian captivity narrative is a literary construct that she develops out of the following literary forms that existed at the time of her writing. These are the spiritual autobiography, a documentary method meant to archive spiritual and emotional growth through a record of daily activities; the conversion narrative, which made …
