Clash Of Totalitarian Titans: Nazi Germany, The Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, And The Racial And Ideological War Of Annihilation On The Eastern Front, John M. Zak
Student Publications
The eastern front in the Second World War was one of unparalleled ferocity and brutality unseen on any other front during civilization’s largest and most destructive war. This work contends that in order to understand how the eastern front was such can only be understood through the lens of Nazi ideology and its long-terms goals for Lebensraum and the Greater Germany it sought to secure. The role of Nazi racial ideology and its belief in the inherent racial inferiority of the Slavic peoples of Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, along with totalitarian ideology viewing Soviet Communism as Nazism’s chief …

A review of Richard Flanagan's novel, The Narrow Road to the Deep North. This paper looks at the background, the themes, the story, and the contribution of this novel to the conversations on the Burma Railway, war, legacy, and love. The usage of the novel form by Flanagan contributes greatly to the power of his novel which becomes a major analytical point of this paper.
Compromising Trust, Lynn Mie Itagaki
Compromising Trust, Lynn Mie Itagaki
Missouri Law Review
Public distrust erodes the efficiency and productivity of our economy, government, and society. It accelerates and amplifies weaknesses in our democratic political infrastructure alongside business relationships and social interactions in mutually reinforcing ways. Determining how to cultivate public trust depends on definitions of “the public”: to whom the government and its officials are accountable. Given the history of the United States as a White settler colonial state, its dependence on African chattel slavery, and its continuing racist xenophobia, “the public” is a frustratingly elastic term. For marginalized populations, public trust might vary in intensity over the past centuries since the …
Some Linear Thoughts On A Cyclical Vision, Frank O. Bowman Iii
Some Linear Thoughts On A Cyclical Vision, Frank O. Bowman Iii
Missouri Law Review
I am honored to have been included in this Symposium on Jack Balkin’s new book, The Cycles of Constitutional Time. Professor Balkin is a giant in the legal academy and a public intellectual of the first rank. Here, as elsewhere, he has written a book that combines careful study of American history and constitutionalism with lucid, propulsive prose. The other contributors to this Symposium are themselves a Who’s Who in constitutional law, history, and political science. I am not sure I quite belong in this exalted company. Even though I have written about some specialized – if sometimes topical – …

Aerial Terror: The Shift In American Daylight Bombing Over Europe During World War Ii, Joseph Sullivan
Aerial Terror: The Shift In American Daylight Bombing Over Europe During World War Ii, Joseph Sullivan
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
In the final two years of the Second World War, the United States abandoned daylight precision bombing for terror bombing. During the interwar years, the United States cited international norms and laws to speak out against unjust air attacks by Germany and Japan. Even during the United States’ period of neutrality, President Franklin Roosevelt criticized Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union for their tactics. But, as the war dragged on, the ferocity and persistence of the Nazis forced the United States to change their approach to strategic bombing. With fewer military industrial targets remaining and Allied casualties rising, the US …
Re-Thinking Pandemics: State, Society, And Disease In British History, 1830-1960, Meghan Walsh
Re-Thinking Pandemics: State, Society, And Disease In British History, 1830-1960, Meghan Walsh
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Written during the COVID-19 pandemic, this paper began in an attempt to understand why, after 100 years since the most devasting pandemic in modern history, the world was faced with yet another, but more importantly how people responded to this new normal. In order to understand better how society today responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, we need to know the past and see what has emerged with each new pandemic. For the purpose of this thesis, I examine the cholera epidemics of 1831-1866, the 1918 influenza pandemic, and the polio epidemics of the mid-twentieth century in British history. The thesis …
Spymaster Of Setauket: The Impact Of Benjamin Tallmadge And The Culper Spy Ring On The American Revolution, Kyle Burgess
Spymaster Of Setauket: The Impact Of Benjamin Tallmadge And The Culper Spy Ring On The American Revolution, Kyle Burgess
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Despite the staunch support that British occupiers enjoyed in New York and Long Island amongst Anglicans, there still remained plenty of citizens whose disdain for their new overseers provided Tallmadge with a large pool to recruit agents. In Patriot super spy Benjamin Tallmadge’s home of Suffolk County, Presbyterians endured an oppressive occupation at the hands of the British Army as many became wartime refugees following the destruction of their farms. This made many of them eager participants in Tallmadge’s schemes and some would even accompany Tallmadge on his whaleboat raids. Although none of these skirmishes proved decisive in tipping the …

Warhorses Amongst War Machines: The German Army's Use Of Horses And Cavalry During World War Ii, Katherine V. Mcfarland
Warhorses Amongst War Machines: The German Army's Use Of Horses And Cavalry During World War Ii, Katherine V. Mcfarland
Senior Theses
This thesis explores the role of the horse as used by the German Army throughout the Second World War. Contrary to the propagandic image of a mechanized Germany and of the blitzkrieg, the reality of warfare at the time remained primarily dependent on the horse, as man and beast continued to engage in conflict side by side. Horses served a variety of uses within the German forces, from mounted cavalry to hauling artillery, with disasters and successes throughout the war. Employing vast numbers of horses, the Germans allocated extensive resources, and often found themselves relying on the animal when vehicles …
The Evolution Of Cyber Risk And The Cyber Insurance Market, Abigail Chase
The Evolution Of Cyber Risk And The Cyber Insurance Market, Abigail Chase
Senior Theses
Insurance and hedging instruments can help corporations manage many of the operational and financial risks they face. Yet, additional complexities are introduced now that many risks are increasingly interdependent and thus strongly correlated, making them more challenging to manage. Few risks illustrate this challenge better than cyber risk.
This thesis will focus on the increasing attention that the management of cyber risks receives in corporations, institutions and industries, and the role that insurance and risk management strategies play in mitigating this risk. The decision to focus on cyber risks—and the financing and management of those risks—is directly related to the …

The (Un)Holy Bible: Slavery, Female Objectification, And Harm, Natalia A. D. Martins
Senior Theses
This project further elucidates the ability that the Biblical text has of being used as a justification for immoral actions. By using a textualist approach, we find that analyzing the effects that the literal text could have if used to justify action, allows us to see what Scriptural-based morality is subject to at all times. We approach this matter by classifying Scriptural interpretations under a spectrum that varies by degree. This is useful to see that the lowest bar for an action to be theologically justifiable, is whether it is in accordance with a literal reading of the Biblical text. …

Psychological Casualties As A Source Of Friction During War And A Mediator Of Coerced Peace Efforts, Karl Umbrasas
Psychological Casualties As A Source Of Friction During War And A Mediator Of Coerced Peace Efforts, Karl Umbrasas
Journal of Strategic Security
The United States homeland does not enjoy sanctuary in the twenty-first century geopolitical environment. Near-peer rivals, such as China and Russia, have capabilities that can impact the United States homeland during a high-end war. Adversaries’ aerospace capabilities have the potential to cause large volumes of psychological casualties among the United States population. Psychological casualties during a high-end war could serve as the basis for a mass call to end a war due to the altered information processing seen among traumatized people. Such a call to end a war could result in unfavorable peace settlements. The United States homeland must improve …
A Failure Masked As A Succeeding War Effort: The Vietnam War, Willow Hasson
A Failure Masked As A Succeeding War Effort: The Vietnam War, Willow Hasson
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This paper investigates how and why the U.S. government hid the reality of the failures of the Vietnam War from the public. In reviewing historical newspapers published during the spring and summer of 1965 alongside formerly classified government documents written at the same time, a clear picture of deception is painted. Even after the press discovered the reality of the failures of the war and shared it with the public, the government continued its war effort because of the entrenched post-World War II belief in American exceptionalism. Overall, the government hid proof that American soldiers were not wanted, that the …
Terrorists Or Freedom Fighters : An Analysis Of The Irish Republican Army In Northern Ireland With Respect To The Idea Of Just War, Allison Jean Fritz
Terrorists Or Freedom Fighters : An Analysis Of The Irish Republican Army In Northern Ireland With Respect To The Idea Of Just War, Allison Jean Fritz
Honors Theses
For more than two decades, Northern Ireland has suffered the high social cost of a violent political conflict. Debates over the nature of this conflict have been wide-ranging, but the dominant view is that the conflict is criminal rather than political in nature. This view holds that the violence is widespread terrorism, with the Irish Republican Army (IRA) seen as the chief protagonist. But while this view is dominant, it is not ubiquitous. It is held neither by those who challenge the foundations of the Northern Irish state nor by those communities which are tolerant if not supportive of those …
The Aboriginal Land And Water Rights Of The Jemez Pueblo, John W. Ragsdale Jr
The Aboriginal Land And Water Rights Of The Jemez Pueblo, John W. Ragsdale Jr
Faculty Works
Since time immemorial, the indigenous people of what became the Southwest United States have maintained sustainable, vibrant communities in the harshest of environments; one with generally arid climate, inconsistent precipitation, heat, wind, thin soil and erosion. These communities, on the razor’s edge, survived for eons because resilience and community, within and with the land, were at the center of their life, economy and order. Balance was not always perfect, but it was the target. The possibility of economic surplus and growth is perhaps a latent human instinct, but it until the fluorescence of Chaco Canyon in the eleventh century it …
Give Peace A Chance: Responses To The Vietnam War On Catholic College Campuses, Elizabeth Gleason
Give Peace A Chance: Responses To The Vietnam War On Catholic College Campuses, Elizabeth Gleason
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, colleges and universities were at the center of the anti-Vietnam War movement in the United States. While there were certainly moments of tense, violent protest at American institutions such as Columbia University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, there were many more moments of nonviolent, peaceful protest at other institutions, particularly Catholic colleges and universities such as Providence College, Notre Dame University, and its sister school St. Mary’s College. While Catholic college students were not the only American students to employ peaceful methods of protest in conveying their opposition to the war, they comprised a …
A Flying Threat Coming To Sahel And East Africa? A Brief Review, Håvard Haugstvedt
A Flying Threat Coming To Sahel And East Africa? A Brief Review, Håvard Haugstvedt
Journal of Strategic Security
Non-state actors have been experimenting with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for two decades. This has become widely known over the 5 years, as both ISIS and the Houthis have adapted weaponized UAVs into their repertoires. As the Sahel and East Africa regions experience a rise in violence from non-state actors, and given that groups here are affiliated with groups in the Middle East, this paper seeks to explore the possibility and likelihood of weaponized UAVs being used on the battlefield in these regions. By utilizing both scholarly work and other reporting from these regions, this paper finds that there is …
The Benefits Of Racial Representation In The Middle School Science Classroom, Samantha Karnes
The Benefits Of Racial Representation In The Middle School Science Classroom, Samantha Karnes
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects
Research has made evident the importance of representation within the classroom, not only for students of color but also for white students. For the means of this project, representation refers to racial representation. There are many methods of increasing representation, such as ensuring staff reflect school demographics and planning more inclusive lessons. An effective method to bring representation into the classroom is by modifying the curriculum that is taught. The curriculum designed for this project is a three-week-long unit developed for the middle school science classroom. This unit is designed to challenge students’ preconceived notions of the scientific community. This …

Reclaiming The Radical Politics Of Self-Care: A Crip-Of-Color Critique, Jina B. Kim, Sami Schalk
Reclaiming The Radical Politics Of Self-Care: A Crip-Of-Color Critique, Jina B. Kim, Sami Schalk
English Language and Literature: Faculty Publications
Since 2016, searches for and discussions of self-care in the United States have increased significantly. While authors who identify as people of color and/or queer critique the capitalist co-optation of this term by linking it conceptually to the work of Audre Lorde, engagement with disability remains conspicuously absent all around, given that Lorde’s use of this concept comes from her 1988 essay on cancer, “A Burst of Light.” This article proposes a reclamation of the radical crip, feminist, queer, and racialized roots of self-care offered by Lorde. Using crip-of-color critique, this article argues that a radical politics of self-care is …

A Closer Look Into American Humanitarian Intervention: How Understanding Humanity Tells Who And When We Help, Katie Noble 21
A Closer Look Into American Humanitarian Intervention: How Understanding Humanity Tells Who And When We Help, Katie Noble 21
Honor Scholar Theses
I will focus on the United States and their motivation to aid humanitarian crises through three case studies. To realize how the United States is motivated to help, humanity’s predispositions must be well-defined, alongside their established geopolitical interests. It is easy to feel empathy for loved ones or family members, but how does empathy translate with someone in a foreign country? At our core, humans seek interaction and cooperation among others. Who and how they decide to cooperate with defines the intervention strategies. If we can understand how the individual selects their in-group, these tendencies will reflect at the state …
Re-Spatializing Gangs In The United States: An Analysis Of Macro- And Micro-Level Network Structures, Ryan J. Roberts
Re-Spatializing Gangs In The United States: An Analysis Of Macro- And Micro-Level Network Structures, Ryan J. Roberts
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
Despite the significant contributions from location-based gang studies, the network structure of gangs beyond localized settings remains a neglected but important area of research to better understand the national security implications of gang interconnectivity. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine the network structure of gangs at the macro- and micro-level using social network analysis. At the macro-level, some gangs have formed national alliances in perpetuity with their goals and objectives. In order to study gangs at the macro-level, this research uses open-source data to construct an adjacency matrix of gang alliances and rivalries to map the relationships between …
Understanding And Avoiding Ai Failures: A Practical Guide., Robert Max C Williams
Understanding And Avoiding Ai Failures: A Practical Guide., Robert Max C Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
As AI technologies increase in capability and ubiquity, AI accidents are becoming more common. Based on normal accident theory, high reliability theory, and open systems theory, we create a framework for understanding the risks associated with AI applications. In addition, we also use AI safety principles to quantify the unique risks of increased intelligence and human-like qualities in AI. Together, these two fields give a more complete picture of the risks of contemporary AI. By focusing on system properties near accidents instead of seeking a root cause of accidents, we identify where attention should be paid to safety for current …
Quarantine, Isolation, And Metaphorical Takings: Balancing Individual Rights And Public Health Responses To Disease Outbreaks, Thomas Williams
Quarantine, Isolation, And Metaphorical Takings: Balancing Individual Rights And Public Health Responses To Disease Outbreaks, Thomas Williams
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
Quarantine and isolation are methods employed by public health officials to control the spread of dangerous disease pathogens through physical isolation of those exposed or symptomatic. While use of these methods has declined in the last century through advances in medical knowledge and treatment, emerging disease threats will likely require increased reliance on them. Despite this, quarantine statutes and related regulations fail to provide compensation to those subject to them, and little recourse exists to make those individuals whole for losses incurred, though the pandemic has highlighted a need for work in this area. One means of shifting the burden …
The Impact Of Uas On The Passenger Airline Industry, Matthew Whitten
The Impact Of Uas On The Passenger Airline Industry, Matthew Whitten
Senior Honors Theses
This study seeks to cover the state of modern autonomous unmanned aerial systems (UAS) integration into commercial aviation, the future applications of the technology in the airline industry, and the roadblocks currently hindering its integration into passenger operations. Although great advancements are being made in the field, technological developments, economic impact, legal restrictions, airline cost, and public perception stand in the way of the full adaptation of autonomous technology into everyday passenger operations. However, technology is rapidly developing, perhaps allowing for the possibility of autonomous air travel even today, but there are likely years of refinement before regulators, executives, and …
A Comparative Study Between 6 Degree-Of-Freedom Trajectory Model And Modified Point Mass Trajectory Model Of Spinning Projectiles, Ange Du
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
For spinning projectiles, the 6 Degree-of-Freedom model can closely capture their trajectories with high accuracy and details. However, it comes with the drawbacks of long computation time and needing many aerodynamic coefficients which can be hard to obtain. The Modified Point Mass Trajectory Model was introduced as a simplified solution. This work compares them with each other, and with some more conventional methods. A program is developed to simulate and visualize trajectories. With some augmentations, the Modified Point Mass model is able to generate comparable results in most cases, but not including special cases such as when the projectile is …
