Accountability As A Key Virtue In Mental Health And Human Flourishing, John R. Peteet, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, C. Stephen Evans Mar 2022

Accountability As A Key Virtue In Mental Health And Human Flourishing, John R. Peteet, Charlotte Vanoyen-Witvliet, C. Stephen Evans

Faculty Publications

We propose that accountability plays an implicit, important, and relatively unexamined role in psychiatry. People generally think of accountability as a relation in which one party is held accountable by another. In this paper, we examine accountability as a virtue, drawing on philosophy, psychiatry, and psychology to examine what it means to welcome being accountable in an excellent way that promotes flourishing. When people manifest accountability as a virtue, they are both responsive to others they owe a response, and they are responsible for their attitudes and actions in light of these relationships. Psychiatric treatment often aims to correct disordered …

Women In Stem: Gender Biases And Employment, Reem Mohamed Mahmoud Mar 2022

Women In Stem: Gender Biases And Employment, Reem Mohamed Mahmoud

The Undergraduate Research Journal

This main focus of this paper is to reduce the gap between women engagement in undergraduate and career level trends in STEM fields. The literature explored points to the major influence of sociocultural factors in the gender gap at the employment level. Therefore, this study examined possible success factors for solutions to this disparity specifically at the workplace. The findings showed that the implicit gender biases programs became more effective when they enforced experiential learning and occurred at appropriate durations. It was also found that the hiring phases could be more gender balanced using language and application screening tools along …

The Unfinished Hope Of Gower's Transgender Children, Gabrielle M.W. Bychowski Mar 2022

The Unfinished Hope Of Gower's Transgender Children, Gabrielle M.W. Bychowski

Accessus

This article examines two of Gower's tales from the Confessio Amantis that deal with trans youths: Iphis and Narcissus. Considering these two tales together, I ask the question: why does one story end with hopeful futurity for the trans masculine youth and the other end with death and the absence of futurity for the trans feminine youth. Connecting these medieval texts to premodern contexts and then with modern contexts, I map the trajectory of centuries long problems facing trans youths. In the end, I conclude that trans youth possess a healthier and more stable future when they receive trans affirming …

Wittgenstein And Hume On Miracles, Samuel Wheeler Mar 2022

Wittgenstein And Hume On Miracles, Samuel Wheeler

Undergraduate Research Symposium

In this paper, I intend to contrast the positions of Ludwig Wittgenstein and David Hume on miracles. While Hume holds that miracles are violations of laws of nature which can never be probable, Wittgenstein would reject this definition. Instead, he takes a broader stance on miracles and holds that many events which are not transgressions of laws of nature can be seen as miraculous. And the point of this is to highlight the vastly different events we call miracles. Contra Hume, Wittgenstein thinks that even some of our greatest certainties can call up in us a sense of absolute wonder …

Dignity Norfolk: How One Tidewater Group Enabled Gay And Lesbian Catholics To Form Long Lasting Friendships And Chosen Families, Chelsea Lembert

Undergraduate Research Symposium

In the past decade, research has been conducted to look into the history of the Queer Community of the Tidewater Region. Students and community volunteers have conducted interviews and gathered documents connected to the queer community to grow the study and breadth of available information for future researchers. However, more in-depth knowledge of community connections and familial ties within the queer community in the Tidewater Region was needed. Through research into Our Own Newspaper, local historical background information, and in-person interviews, I pieced together first-hand accounts of life through the eyes of a gay man or lesbian woman living in …

An Exercise In Exceptions: Personhood, Divergency, And Ableism In The Star Trek Franchise, Jessica A. Blackman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In 1987, more than two decades after Star Trek: The Original Series aired on television for the first time, the Enterprise returned to delight audiences with an all-new crew in Star Trek: The Next Generation. With the new generation came new issues and adventures for the crew and the audience to explore, and the popularity of the show lead to the production of three successful spin-offs. These four new shows in the Star Trek franchise dealt with more complex plots and commentaries than the original series before them; three characters in particular – Lt. Commander Data, Dr. Julian Bashir, and …

Interpreting 9/11: Religious Or Political Event?, Fadime Apaydin Mar 2022

Interpreting 9/11: Religious Or Political Event?, Fadime Apaydin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Terrorism or violence can be triggered by a variety of circumstances, including the religious, cultural, political, or economic conditions of the social environment, as well as the perpetrator’s personal characteristics. However, studies conducted in the aftermath of 9/11 have largely described the attacks as religious events, arguing that religion inherently causes violence or that religion is the main motivation for violence. The primary argument for the approach adopted by such studies is that secular institutions are inclined to be less violent than religious ones. A second approach, on the other hand, fundamentally opposes the arguments that led to describing the …

Aid Societies Were Not Alike: Northern Teachers In Post-Civil War Florida, John T. Foster, Jr.

Florida Historical Quarterly

Northern teachers in the South during the Civil War and Reconstruction have been the subject of various studies.1 This literature emphasizes the origins and development of the aid societies that sponsored the teachers, and it focuses upon major figures who shaped educational policy. At the same time, little attention details the activities of early northern teachers in Florida within the context of developments in other places. Florida’s experience varies from other parts of the South, and it offers, by contrast, a fresh perspective on the regional experience. Ansel Eddy Kinne’s career provides an opportunity for understanding aid societies. From early …

تقدير نظام التدفق البيئي لتحديد الحد الأدنى من التدفق للحد من التلوث: وادي زومر - فلسطين كدراسة حالة, Saed Khayat

Palestine Technical University Research Journal

Possible factors that play a role in restoring a flow regime that supports a healthy environment were identified for Wadi Zomar, Palestine. The hydrograph shows that threshold discharges for bed drying are less than 0.14 m3/s, bar formation is less than 0.4 ms/s and floodplain inundation events are over 3 m3/s. The HEC-RAS model suggests a continuous discharge throughout the year that maintains the base flow in the range of 0.5 m3/s. The model suggests that the restoration process is controlled by two main factors: role of sufficient flow and flood inundation frequency.

المكافحة الحيوية لمرض عين لطاووس المتسبب عن فطر Spilocaea Oleagina على الزيتون باستخدام البكتيريا, Mazen Salman

Palestine Technical University Research Journal

The olive leaf spot disease caused by the fungus Spilocaea oleagina(Cast.) Hughes (syn. Cycloconium oleagina) is one of the most destructive diseases on olive trees causing losses that may reach 20% of the yield. The disease is controlled by the application of chemical fungicides which is not always feasible in providing proper protection against the pathogen. In this work we report the efficacy of Pseudomonas fluorescencisolate ORS3 and Bascillus atrophaeusisolate BATin controlling the disease under field conditions. An Olive field in, Tulkarm governorate, Palestine was selected. The olive trees were 5-10 years old and were highly infected with the olive …

Condensation reaction of naphthalene -2-Sulfonylhydrazide, as starting material with 2,5-dimethoxy benzaldehydewas used to produce (E)-N’-(2,5-dimethoxybenzalidene) naphthalene-2-sulfonohydrazide. The Schiff base product was isolated, purified and then spectrally characterized via UV-Vis, GC/MS, FT-IR, 1H and 13C NMR analysis, where strong evidences confirmed the formation of the desired product. Antimicrobial activity of Schiff base product was evaluated in vitro against several types of bacteria such as: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and MRSA by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) test using tetracycline (TE) as a standard antibiotic. The tests showed a promising bacteriostatic effect of this compound against gram negative bacteria …
