Developing New Church Leaders In A Digital Age, Roy Gruber
Developing New Church Leaders In A Digital Age, Roy Gruber
Doctor of Leadership
Massive cultural and technological shifts usher in a new digital age, creating a leadership crisis in the American church. In a time of decline, how can the church thrive in the future? The answer to that question resides in future leadership in the church. The NPO for the Project states: The church needs to develop digital learners into new leaders for the next generation. The Project was developed to offer one tool to onboard new Christians toward future leadership. A few essential insights emerged from the research for the Project. First, in addition to significant cultural changes, there is emerging …
Cultural Factors Associated With Human Trafficking Of Girls And Women In Northern Tanzania: The Case Of Arusha Region, Rehema John Magesa
Cultural Factors Associated With Human Trafficking Of Girls And Women In Northern Tanzania: The Case Of Arusha Region, Rehema John Magesa
Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence
Human trafficking is persistent in many regions of Tanzania despite different efforts to reduce the practice by the Government and other stakeholders. Girls and young women are more affected by this practice in violation of their human rights than men and boys. This study explored the cultural factors attributing to the trafficking of girls and women in Northern Tanzania. The study involved 400 girls and young women for a quantitative and qualitative study on cultural determinants of human trafficking. The study found the following cultural practices pushed girls and women towards situations in which they could be trafficked: female genital …
Inner Work Community: Shadow Work As Spiritual Formation, Michael Simmons
Inner Work Community: Shadow Work As Spiritual Formation, Michael Simmons
Doctor of Leadership
The NPO statement surrounding this doctoral project is that A theological, practical, and community-centered framework for shadow work is disconnected from Christian spiritual formation. This doctoral project is the culmination of a three-fold process: discovering the need for shadow work in the context of spiritual formation, designing multi-faceted virtually-based opportunities to address this need among individuals and groups, and delivering those opportunities via online courses, one-on-one shadow work, and digital content such as essays, articles, and podcasts. My vocational context is my unofficial organization, and MVP, Inner Work Community, which provides these opportunities. Inner Work Community is extended through partnerships …
Salty: A Diffractive Inquiry Of Visceral Knowing And Embodied Aesthetics, Mei Ling Chua
Salty: A Diffractive Inquiry Of Visceral Knowing And Embodied Aesthetics, Mei Ling Chua
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation takes a diffractive, onto-epistemological approach to everyday practices with salt in order to articulate an expanded understanding of meaning making and knowledge production. This research reckons with and challenges dominant modes of knowing that engage a Cartesian perspective to situate knowing as the exclusive domain of the mind in both form and topic of inquiry. This research acts simultaneously as both a direct practice of and metacognition about knowledge production by examining 1. the embodied (including sensory and emotional aspects) and 2. the relational (including interpersonal and socio-cultural) dimensions of experience as visceral knowing. This articulation of …
Coloniality, Western Science, And Critical Ethnic Studies In Stem Education, Latoya M. Strong
Coloniality, Western Science, And Critical Ethnic Studies In Stem Education, Latoya M. Strong
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In this dissertation, I use a critical transdisciplinary approach to examine how the coloniality of Western Science impacts science education teaching, learning, and research. Weaving together Black geographies, settler colonialism, and decolonial theory, I illustrate how the historical, symbiotic relationship between colonization and Western Science created a culture that continues to shape modern science practices and science education. The coloniality of Western Science was codified into science education, resulting in three approaches to teaching, learning and research—the assimilationist model, the capitalist model, and the imperialist model. Moving from theory to research, I collaborated with STEM educators over six weeks to …
Type Of Glossing Affects Cognitive Load And Retrieval Of Meaning During L2 Reading, Camilo Andrés Bonilla Carvajal
Type Of Glossing Affects Cognitive Load And Retrieval Of Meaning During L2 Reading, Camilo Andrés Bonilla Carvajal
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The use of translation in language teaching has been a source of controversial debate, nevertheless, glossing—and, specifically, interlinear glossing—remains an understudied type of materials, despite having been used by learners and teachers of foreign languages since at least 1000 C.E. (Bata, Gwara & Porter, 1997). In the absence of a comprehensive literature review tracing the history of interlinear glossing, as well as the absence of enough empirical studies addressing the effect of glossing on cognitive effort in language learning, the present work aims at exploring the role of first language glossing in facilitating reading by describing the results of an …
Deconstructing Biopolitical And Performative Modes Of Gender In Spanish Science Fiction, Emma Navarro
Deconstructing Biopolitical And Performative Modes Of Gender In Spanish Science Fiction, Emma Navarro
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis investigates the distinctly Spanish works of science fiction created by Pedro Almodóvar and Elia Barceló through biopolitical and feminist frameworks. Utilizing the theories of feminist philosopher Judith Butler and sociologist Jemima Repo, we uncover associations between the fictional and theoretical that have seldom been studied in conjunction. The paper aims to demonstrate Almodóvar and Barceló’s unique narratives free from the confines of an unwavering gender stratum while simultaneously revealing the deteriorative effects of gender as a control apparatus. Deeply influenced by the post-Franco Madrid Movida movement, these creators exemplify the feminist ideals emerging from that progressive time, rejecting …
Chromatic Dissensus: An Otherwise Archive Of Natural Dyes, 1700–1856, Luke Church
Chromatic Dissensus: An Otherwise Archive Of Natural Dyes, 1700–1856, Luke Church
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Chromatic Dissensus: An Otherwise Archive of Natural Dyes, 1750-1856 works from the premise that the absences regarding subaltern life structuring the colonial archive are an epistemological problem—that is, navigating the colonial archive requires an interrogation of the parameters and practices of knowledge formation. Building from recent scholarship in early American studies which details how eighteenth-century colonial knowledge developed out of an epistemic entanglement between British colonists, diasporic Africans, and indigenous Americans, my dissertation queries the overdetermination of colonial knowledge and subsequent occlusion of alternative parameters for knowing. Enlisting aesthetics, in its broad definition as the theorization of sense making, my …
Belonging: The Heart Of Our Family Calling, Janice M. Brewer-Stevens
Belonging: The Heart Of Our Family Calling, Janice M. Brewer-Stevens
Doctor of Ministry
Transracial families are part of our society whether people like it or not. There are not enough adoptive families of any kind, and children need support, love, and acceptance. Last August the Census Bureau reported that the number of non-Hispanic Americans who identify as multiracial jumped by 127 percent over the last decade, and for people who identified as Hispanic, the increase was even higher. Also, from 2017 to 2019, half of all U.S. adoptions were of non-white children, and half of these adoptions were transracial. The result? An increase in transracial adoptions in the United States and the subsequent …
Race Matters: The Gospel, Racial Reconciliation, And The Church, Terry Crist
Race Matters: The Gospel, Racial Reconciliation, And The Church, Terry Crist
Doctor of Ministry
The modern Pentecostal movement has been marred by racial incongruence and division. Defying the segregationist laws of the day, the earliest revivals of the twentieth century were racially integrated, reflecting a biblical vision for the oneness of a new humanity in Christ empowered by the Holy Spirit. And yet, the unity born from these early revivals proved insufficient to sustain racial equity within the movements. A century later, Pentecostal (and Charismatic) churches fail to reflect racial diversity at the highest levels of authority, direction setting, and power-sharing. The lack of clarity surrounding key theological concepts such as the imago Dei, …
David Versus Goliath: The Power Of Weakness In Asymmetric Warfare—Lessons From History, Nicholas K. Petaludis
David Versus Goliath: The Power Of Weakness In Asymmetric Warfare—Lessons From History, Nicholas K. Petaludis
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Under what conditions do violent nonstate actors (VNA) succeed against states? Why does David sometimes beat Goliath? Since at least the time of Thucydides and the Peloponnesian Wars, the realist narrative in international relations measures power primarily in relative, coercive, and deterrent terms. Strong states should accordingly face fewer constraints and enjoy more options while pursuing their national interests. Unconventional warfare, and its subsets of terrorism and insurgency, should—given these circumstances, end in VNA failure. Sometimes, however, VNAs find success. By comparing the literature on historical and current case studies, I propose that a set of preconditions and two mechanisms …
Examination Of Korean Feminism From The Intersections Of Colonialism, Modernity, And Nationalism In Colonial Korea (1910–1945), Yae Hee Choi
Examination Of Korean Feminism From The Intersections Of Colonialism, Modernity, And Nationalism In Colonial Korea (1910–1945), Yae Hee Choi
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis aims to investigate the politics of Korean feminism during the time of Japanese colonization (1910-1945) from the perspectives of colonialism, modernity, and nationalism. The study illustrates how Korean women perceived themselves in terms of individuals, colonial subjects, and Korean nationals during a period of significant societal changes. It also intends to broaden the boundaries of gender inquiries in colonial Korea, which often focus on binary constructions of Japanese repression versus national resistance. This study argues that a nationalist paradigm oversimplifies the intricate dynamics and varied experiences of colonized subjects, specifically women. The logic of nationalism places all forms …
An Analytical And Comparative Study: Design Of Outdoor Shading Device Based On Fractal Geometry Strategies To Increase Thermal Comfort, Dalia Mohamed Ezzat
An Analytical And Comparative Study: Design Of Outdoor Shading Device Based On Fractal Geometry Strategies To Increase Thermal Comfort, Dalia Mohamed Ezzat
Journal of Art, Design and Music
Despite growing design demand, there has been little research on the design of shading devices for the outdoor environment. Heat-related illnesses are becoming a more pressing issue as temperatures rise due to climate change. Seeking shade is one effective way for humans to protect themselves. Blocking sun radiation is the main goal of shading. One of the most effective cooling strategies, found in nature, is the tree fractal strategy used to optimize shading. Similarly, Girih patterns are fractal in geometry. The purpose of this paper is to design a shading device based on the Girih fractal geometry inspired by tree …
Students’ And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Using Memes In Esl Classrooms, Fadwa Youssef
Students’ And Teachers’ Perceptions Of Using Memes In Esl Classrooms, Fadwa Youssef
Theses and Dissertations
Using humor in the language classroom has proven to be an effective pedagogical teaching tool that builds rapport between students and teachers. It also reduces anxiety and affective filter as well as increases students’ performance and willingness to communicate in class using their L2 (Azizinezhad & Hashemi, 2011; Banks, 2014; Soares, 2015). Previous studies used humor broadly starting from humorous comments in class to funny TV shows, movies, or songs. Some studies went further using funny memes in class and fewer studies went all the way making students create memes as part of their class requirements (Purnama, 2017). Results of …
Long-Standing Narrative Of Indonesian Islamic Women In Four Novels By Habiburrahman El Shirazy, Dian Rizky Azhari, M. Yoesoef, Turita Indah Setyani
Long-Standing Narrative Of Indonesian Islamic Women In Four Novels By Habiburrahman El Shirazy, Dian Rizky Azhari, M. Yoesoef, Turita Indah Setyani
International Review of Humanities Studies
Discussions about Islamic women have been buzzing in Indonesia after the collapse of the New Order. Its presence directly contradicts the narratives of women that were influenced by western thought, such as liberalism and secularism, as well as by global islamization movement from the Middle East. The conflicts that arose were about the role of women in the public sphere, women's independence, women's bodies and sexuality. This study aims to find similarities between ideas about Islamic women and the practice of Islamic women's discourse in Indonesian society. This study uses an intrinsic study method and a sociology of literature approach …

The Threat Of Covid-19 Pandemic In Social Network-Thinking, Poppy Setiawati Nurisnaeny, Rendy Ananta Prasetya, Suwedi Suwedi
International Review of Humanities Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic creates various dynamics of uncertainty that impact morbidity, mortality, and economic damage. The dynamics of these threats are expanding in the globalization era through networks and national security into a multidimensional sphere that tends to be unpredictable (Starvridis, 2015). Social transformation is always marked with certainties. Therefore, scientific regulations are needed to guide various operations, which functions as a principle in adapting to the quick-changing socio-cultural dynamics. This study aims to analyze the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic and strategic thinking steps in the ethnographic framework of social network thinking. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method …
Gendered Nollywood: The Crisis Of Femininity In Contemporary Nigerian Films, Abiodun Olayiwola
Gendered Nollywood: The Crisis Of Femininity In Contemporary Nigerian Films, Abiodun Olayiwola
International Review of Humanities Studies
Studies on the construction of women in Nollywood films have majorly focused on the subjugation of women by the phallocentric African men and the need for socio-economic liberation. Most of these films perceive women as a socially constituted homogenous group on the basis of shared oppression. However, this study intends to interrogate gender relations in terms of the way cultural and development policies are currently regulating the balance of power between men and women in a rapidly mutating African society. Through a reading of select Nigerian films, the paper examines how Nollywood films construct the heterogeneous roles performed by men …

Ecological Imperialism In Yvonne Owuor Dust Ngũgĩ Wa Thiong'o’S Petals Of Blood, Eguvwebere Adanma Anthonia
International Review of Humanities Studies
Modern African Literature grew out of the need for re-identification and reevaluation of the African cultural heritage. Despite that, colonialism and its legacies continue to have a powerful and lasting impact in Africa. Using two literary texts from East Africa, Kenya, reflecting post-colonial and neo-colonial eras, this study examines the validity of the continuation of Ecological Imperialism in Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's Petals of Blood (1977) and Owuor Yvonne Adhiambo's Dust (2013). An analytical appraisal of the texts reveals that the post/neocolonial nation-state, far from embodying the new hope of the masses, is a replica of the colonial master's political system …

The Essential Of Semar Power In The Play Of Bathara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari By Ki Manteb Sudarsono, Dewi Dian Lestari, Darmoko Darmoko
International Review of Humanities Studies
This paper discusses the essential of Semar Power in the puppet play entitled Bathara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari. The play Bathara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari was taken into consideration in conducting this research because it is a unique play, namely the Ruwat play and the Mahabharata story play which were united through the experience of the presence of Semar characters in a puppet play by Ki Manteb Sudarsono. The main problem in this research is how the essence of Semar Power is formulated in Batara Kala Tundhung-Surya Ndadari. This study aims to formalize Semar's power as the holder of the superiority of …
Diaspora In Indonesia-China Relationship At The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Era, R. Tuty Nur Mutia Enoch Muas
Diaspora In Indonesia-China Relationship At The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Era, R. Tuty Nur Mutia Enoch Muas
International Review of Humanities Studies
Diaspora is a potential non-state actor as a driver of people-to-people connections between the country of origin and the country of residence. People-to-people connections are part of public diplomacy, increasing in importance with information and communication technology. Indonesia-China relations have existed for more than seven decades, experiencing dynamic ups and downs. Since the inauguration of the Strategic Partnership between Indonesia and China in 2005 and then in 2013, it has increased to become a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and bilateral and multilateral relations have tended to increase. Bilateral and multilateral relations have managed to grow. However, from the Indonesian side, there …
A Captive’S Subjectivity, Rebeca J. Blemur
A Captive’S Subjectivity, Rebeca J. Blemur
Theses and Dissertations
The project discusses the effects of Haiti’s colonization as the space transitions from Hispaniola to Saint-Domingue and later to the free state of Haiti. This is done by studying the concept of the right to conquest and the absurdities that exist around the first appearances of international law. The project focuses on the pre-revolutionary period starting around the 1750s, the revolutionary period that began in the 1790s, the French oligarchical class’s attempt for social equality, and the war for ultimate colonial conquest between the French, Spanish, and British. The project will display how legally objectifying a human being manifests subjects …
“For The Moment, I Am Not F*Cking,” I Am Tweeting: Platforms Of / As Sexuality, Jacob Johanssen
“For The Moment, I Am Not F*Cking,” I Am Tweeting: Platforms Of / As Sexuality, Jacob Johanssen
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This article develops the argument that digital platforms are significantly infused with originary (and unconscious) residues of the sexual. Drawing on Laplancheian conceptualizations of sexuality, I argue that the digital has always been sexual(ised) in itself – a process that precedes and exceeds the erotic or pornographic. For Laplanche, sexuality is constitutive of the human subject as such. Infantile sexuality is shaped and transformed in an enigmatic relation with the caregiver. Drawing on this model as an analogy, I claim that users are drawn to platforms because they (unconsciously) desire to return to infantile sexuality and a holding environment but …
Amazon Web Services, The Lacanian Unconscious, And Digital Life, Marshall N. Armintor
Amazon Web Services, The Lacanian Unconscious, And Digital Life, Marshall N. Armintor
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In late 2011, ex-Amazon developer Steve Yegge’s rant about his former company described Amazon’s rapid transformation from an online bookstore to a web-services entity with a ruthlessly unified platform, all guided by the idea that the company’s effort to streamline its internal efficiency could be monetized, and the resultant software products sold through Amazon Web Services. The media consumerism that fed Amazon’s early years funded a surveilling behemoth, one that everyone feared Microsoft would become. As such, AWS has become a manifestation of the internet’s Lacanian unconscious (even providing the services and hosting for Reddit), structured around the optimization of …
Purloined Significance: How Recidivism Algorithms Capture, Transform, And Automate Our Intersubjective Unconscious As Data, Macy Mcdonald
Purloined Significance: How Recidivism Algorithms Capture, Transform, And Automate Our Intersubjective Unconscious As Data, Macy Mcdonald
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Ever since ProPublica published their groundbreaking analysis of Northpointe’s Correctional Offender Management Profiling for Alternative Sanctions Core Risk and Needs Assessment software (COMPAS) in 2016, this web-based decision support system (DSS) has spawned a wide range of critiques and charges of racial bias. COMPAS provides a full suite of decision support applications to the US prison-industrial complex, including algorithmically derived recidivism predictions that increasingly guide parole decisions. The larger conversation surrounding COMPAS raises the question of how we analyze powerful, and yet opaque, data assemblages. In this article, I model an allegorical analysis of data assemblages. I argue the skills …
“There Is No Pandemic”: On Memes, Algorithms And Other Interpassive Forms Of Right-Wing Disbelief, Scott Krzych
“There Is No Pandemic”: On Memes, Algorithms And Other Interpassive Forms Of Right-Wing Disbelief, Scott Krzych
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This essay examines several prominent memes that have circulated on Right-wing social media during the Covid-19 pandemic. The memes coordinate what I describe as a mode of interpassive humor, which positions those who “believe” in the crisis as naïve dupes, infantilizing those subjects who have fallen prey to the idea that they should take the pandemic seriously, and thereby delegating fearfulness to the other so that reactionary Covid-19 denialists may continue with their lives unaffected. The essay thereby seeks to draw suggestive lines of affiliation between studies of digital memes, evolutionary mimetics, and psychoanalytic theory, pointing to the algorithmic …
Stalking Oneself: The Fantasmatic Intersubjectivity Of Google, Alois Sieben
Stalking Oneself: The Fantasmatic Intersubjectivity Of Google, Alois Sieben
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
This essay reads fictional and non-fictional accounts of digital stalking as signals of larger changes in intersubjectivity itself caused by Google. Most social media platforms trap users in imaginary relations, in which the other is encountered as a complete profile, but Google allows the searcher to locate an absence in the other in the form of a missing search result. As will be shown in an analysis of two contemporary novels whose first-person narrations center around Google-stalking, Caroline Kepnes’s You (2014) and Olivia Sudjic’s Sympathy (2017), Google’s mode of intersubjectivity amounts to an endless tunnel with no light at its …
Lacan And The Algorithm, Clint Burnham
Lacan And The Algorithm, Clint Burnham
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
Exploring the development of algorithms in Lacanian theory, specifically the "R schema" in the 1950s, I argue that psychoanalysis, read through contemporary debates about the "algorithmic cult" of Netflix and other avatars of popular culture, can be said to reveal the inhuman, machinic essence of subjectivity. The etiology of algorithms, mathemes, and other formulae and diagrams in Lacan’s oeuvre has been under-studied, in part because for some readers they are not as attractive as his more bravura flourishes of word play as exegetical excess, and in part because they derive largely from the ‘hard’ structuralist moment of his work in …
