Character Motivation And Definition Through Dialog In The Memory Plays Of Harold Pinter, Douglas E. Grohne Jan 1981

Character Motivation And Definition Through Dialog In The Memory Plays Of Harold Pinter, Douglas E. Grohne

Masters Theses

Several critics have suggested that the plays of Harold Pinter are incomprehensible because the characters do not explicitly explain their actions and motivations. These comments come because the critics and audiences are conditioned to expect a playwright to in some way explain the motivations and personalities of his characters with a standard explanation given through explicit dialog, copious stage directions, or other means. But Pinter believes that it is dangerous for a playwright to design a play with one overall purpose in mind because the chances are that the purpose will be mistaken.

Interview With Bessie Louise Garison - Oh 104, Bessie Louise Garison

Winthrop University Oral History Program

In December 1980, Anne Ledford interviewed Winthrop alumna and former faculty member Bessie Louise Garison (1892–1985). Born in Ridgeway, SC, Garison moved with her family to Rock Hill in 1895, the same year Winthrop relocated there from Columbia. In the interview, she recalls her childhood in Rock Hill, witnessing the construction of the Winthrop campus, and attending Winthrop’s kindergarten and Model School (later the Winthrop Training School housed in the Withers/W.T.S. Building). Garison enrolled at Winthrop College in 1908 at age sixteen and graduated in 1912. She later returned as an Instructor of Fine Arts, serving from 1937 to 1958. …

A Lutheran Confessional Critique Of The Understanding And Function Of The Believer’S Union With Christ In The Theolcgy Of Watchman Nee, Dennis Paul Schiefelbein

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to construct systematically Nee's understanding of the believer's union with Christ, and then outline the function he ascribes to this union in Christian sanctification. Then after identifying specific focal points on which Nee's theological system depends, I will bring an extensive study of the Lutheran Confessions to bear on these issues. In terms of a question, has Nee developed a theology which may be acceptable to Confessional Lutheranism? Our study will begin with a brief historical section on Nee.

Attitudes Of Mid-Life Mothers Toward Their Daughters' Adolescence, Terri Sweig Dec 1980

Attitudes Of Mid-Life Mothers Toward Their Daughters' Adolescence, Terri Sweig

Theses

This paper discusses the ways in which mid-life mothers reflected their attitudes toward the emerging womanhood of their adolescent daughters through art work. It concerns natural and normal developmental stresses which occur as mothers and daughters pass through difficult life stages somewhat simultaneously. A non-clinical group of four mothers between 38 and 44-years old with daughters between 14 and 17-years old responded to five specifically designed drawing tasks derived from literature on mid-life and mothers and daughters. Information was elicited regarding each mother's relationship to her own mother, the negotiation of her own adolescence, and her present self-concept. Discussion of …
