A Synthesis Of Theme And Style: "Prelude" As A Turning Point In The Fiction Of Katherine Mansfield, Peggy Orenstein
A Synthesis Of Theme And Style: "Prelude" As A Turning Point In The Fiction Of Katherine Mansfield, Peggy Orenstein
Honors Papers
Katherine Mansfield's contribution to modern British fiction has been virtually ignored in recent years; the two major periods of critical attention to her work were in the 1920's (right after her death) and the early 1950's. Critics of both groups have given extensive consideration to Mansfield's experimentation--independent of Virginia Woolf and James Joyce--with interior monologue, shifting narrative perspective and moments of revelation However, analyses of Mansfield have predominantly ignored her concerns as a woman writer. Mansfield examines women's roles and women's sexuality in nearly all of her stories; she probes women's circumstances from their own perspective and shows the effect …
Christopher Caudwell And His Critics: A Study Of Caudwell's Philosophy Of Art And The Critical Response, Thomas Riggins
Christopher Caudwell And His Critics: A Study Of Caudwell's Philosophy Of Art And The Critical Response, Thomas Riggins
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis deals with the philosophy of art of the British Marxist, Christopher Caudwell. It begins with a general discussion of the intellectual environment of Caudwell's day–i.e., the 1920s and 30s in Europe and especially in England. It then procedes to a presentation of Caudwell's basic philosophical position with major emphasis on his work Illusion and Reality. This is followed by a review of the critical assessment Caudwell's ideas evoked and a number of detractors and supporters are discussed. Special attention is then placed on a review of the aesthetic theory of Socialist Realism and Caudwell's relation to it. …

Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler
Belle S. Spafford: Leader Of Women, Gayle Morby Chandler
Theses and Dissertations
This historical/descriptive study analyzes the speaking career of Belle S. Spafford and attempts to document the relationship between her speaking and her influence with her peers. For over fifty years, the dedicated woman served as a spokesman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the National Council of Women, briding the gap between the secular and religious world of women. A rhetorical analysis of four speeches indicates the following findings: Mrs. Spafford appealed to her audiences through a focus on shared values; she had credibility because of her positions of authority and used it wisely; she effectively …
A Statistical Model For Seventh-Day Adventist White English-Speaking Church Growth In The United States, Des Cummings
A Statistical Model For Seventh-Day Adventist White English-Speaking Church Growth In The United States, Des Cummings
Dissertations
Problem. Until 1983 there was no statistical model for projecting church growth among white English-speaking Seventh-day Adventist churches in the United States. The purpose of this study was to identify a forecasting model based on the variables that were gathered from pastor and local church reports. Thegeneral hypothesis was that a significant predictive relationship existed between some combination of report variable/factors and the rate of church growth or decline. This hypothesis was subdivided into four specific hypotheses.
Method. One hundred forty-five churches were randomly selected from the white English-speaking churches in the United States. The financial, membership, pastor, and Sabbath …
The Implications Of The Piagetian Stages To Readiness For Baptism, Daniel Gutekunst
The Implications Of The Piagetian Stages To Readiness For Baptism, Daniel Gutekunst
Dissertations
The Problem. This study was designed to discover how children from Seventh-day Adventist families react to their baptism after the event. Do they feel that they were "ready" at the time of baptism? Do they think they understood the Bible doctrines when they were baptized? Which people and factors influenced them in their decision? Have these children reached cognitive maturity according to the Formal Operations stage in Piagetian terms, the stage at which children are accountable for their decisions.
Method. A questionnaire of thirty-three questions was given to children in selected Adventist schools who had been baptized between June 1972 …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Career Appraisal And Status Of Burnout Among Religious Educators: Within The Education System Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, Keith W. Allred
Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to determine the predictive power of items regarding career appraisal in correctly classifying the status of burnout among Church Education System educators with six to ten years of service. Also, the factors considered most effective as deterrents to burnout were determined.
It was found that those who (1) did not feel they were progressing in their careers and (2) would change careers if possible were most likely to report burnout. Feeling needed in one's assignment and being recognized and appreciated for one's accomplishments, besides having a happy marriage, enjoying life, and living Gospel …

Big Bang Theology: The Reconciliation Of Science And Religion, Milton L. Boyle Jr.
Big Bang Theology: The Reconciliation Of Science And Religion, Milton L. Boyle Jr.
Bridgewater Review
A struggle began in 1633 which is not yet resolved. It is a contest for the highest possible stakes - the mind of man, and it pits two most formidable opponents against each other: science and religion. The event that initiated this battle was the trial of Galileo and the dominant issue was much more than a man's challenge of his church’s teachings and authority. Rather it was science versus religion, a new manifestation of an age-old struggle between faith and reason, the way man comes to know reality.

Review: 'The Rise Of The American Electrochemicals Industry, 1880-1910: Studies In The American Technological Environment', John Alfred Heitmann
History Faculty Publications
Historians of science and technology have recently recognized that the spectacular advances made during the 1920s in the manufacture of synthetic chemicals can best be understood within the context of industrial and educational developments prior to World War I. In The Rise of the American Electrochemicals Industry, 1880-1910, Martha Moore Trescott contends that the electrochemical industry provided the essential bridge between mechanical and metallurgical knowledge of the nineteenth century and chemical technology of the twentieth century.
